00:00Hi Vogue, I'm Selena Gomez.
00:06And I'm Steve Martin.
00:08And I'm Martin Short.
00:09And this is Off the Cuff.
00:12What a delivery.
00:13Thanks.
00:14Wow.
00:15Alright, round one.
00:16Icebreakers.
00:17What was your first impression of me?
00:20My first impression of you?
00:22Before we met.
00:23I just thought that you were this phenomenally talented, ridiculously beautiful, very gifted
00:32artist.
00:34But, I've said this before, on my way to the first day of shooting, I thought, but she
00:39could be a nightmare, because she's a pop princess, and she's been a star since she
00:45was a kid, and then I met you, and my heart burst.
00:49I knew right away.
00:50You are a poet.
00:52You really are.
00:53I'm not a good poet.
00:54No, no, not a good poet.
00:55Yeah.
00:56I had heard of Selena Gomez, and appreciated, but I didn't really know, so I thought, I'm
01:01gonna Google her, and then I say, but first, I'm gonna look up my credits.
01:06So I look up my credits, and they're like this long, and then I look up Selena's, and
01:10it's like page after page after page, and I realize she's more of a professional than
01:14both of us.
01:15Oh.
01:16I have a question for Selena.
01:18What was the first concert you attended?
01:21That would be Britney Spears.
01:22Wow.
01:23Ooh.
01:24How old were you?
01:25I think I was 11.
01:27How about you, Steve?
01:28What was the first concert you ever went to?
01:30Greek Theater to see Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Brass, and my girlfriend, Nina, was a dancer
01:38in the show.
01:39I'm whispering to the people next to me, going, my girlfriend's a dancer.
01:42Oh, that's so cute.
01:44Now I have a question.
01:46What's your first stop when you arrive in New York City?
01:49I know the bathroom for you.
01:51And what else?
01:55I just love being on set.
01:57When I'm in New York, I love getting cozy in my apartment and then being on set.
02:03I don't know.
02:04I mean, the first thing I do is, my tradition is to take a full sponge bath.
02:10Oh.
02:11A what?
02:12Sponge bath.
02:13Sponge bath.
02:14Yeah.
02:15With Lume.
02:16Does someone administer it to you, or you meet someone?
02:17I meet someone, and I say, are you into sponge baths the way I am?
02:22Round two.
02:23Okay.
02:24Personal questions.
02:25Oh, round two.
02:26All right, guys.
02:27Favorite character you've ever played, aside from All-Name Martyrs?
02:32I'll raise my hand, go, you're thinking.
02:34Roxanne.
02:35C.V.
02:36Bale.
02:37Oh.
02:38It was like a fun character to play.
02:39It was alive and kicking, had a lot of energy.
02:41Had a big nose.
02:42It wasn't cheaper by the dozen.
02:43Listen, I've played so many characters, and I suppose they're all my children.
02:48So I love them all.
02:50That's not a good answer.
02:51Oh.
02:52I would have to say that your favorite character is the most extreme, and the one that, to
02:57me, is the most extreme is the parody of Wizard of Oz, Guy Bouncing Off the Fence.
03:03Dale O'Day.
03:04I've never seen that.
03:05What is this?
03:06Dale O'Day.
03:07Dale O'Day.
03:08Oh, now I feel left out.
03:10Worst or most memorable audition experience?
03:15Well, I was auditioning for a commercial for Tang, the orange drink.
03:21And I walked into, and there were eight guys there, and they all looked exactly like me.
03:27So I had an 8x10, and as a joke, I took a Sharpie and drew a mustache and a goatee on
03:33my 8x10.
03:34And then I went into the bathroom and drew a mustache and goatee on my own face.
03:40And I walked in, and they just went, looked at me and went,
03:43Yeah, have you read the copy?
03:45Completely bummed.
03:46I had to go, no, not really.
03:47Oh, you were like, about that.
03:48Oh yeah, it was a failure.
03:49Didn't get it.
03:50For me, it was probably, I don't remember what I was auditioning for at the time, but
03:55I had turned beet red because I was so nervous, and I was sweating.
04:01How old?
04:02Probably 21.
04:04Oh, oh my god.
04:05It was like a big deal.
04:08Did you get it?
04:09Well, no.
04:10Hey, fellow castmates.
04:11Hi.
04:12Was there a role you wish you got to play?
04:15Selena?
04:18No, I think there are genres and movies that I love, but I think a part of why I love them
04:24is that they do have the right cast for it.
04:28Well, no, no, there are roles that you would be right for.
04:30Like, for example, throw mom up from the train, the role of Ann Ramsey, the mother.
04:36Edward.
04:37You know, and she's upside down.
04:38I don't know.
04:39I think you have range.
04:40Selena has no idea what you're talking about.
04:42It's the movie before her time.
04:44By the way, nor does America.
04:45Yeah, yeah.
04:46You ought to update your references by 15 years, say.
04:49Oh, I have a good one for you guys.
04:51What's the greatest misconception about being a comedic actor?
04:55Well, it's changed.
04:56That, you know, when you're first, you start out being a comedian, you're expected to be
05:01funny all the time.
05:03When you go into a room, you're expected to be funny.
05:05But my act was so extreme that I couldn't be.
05:09People would have hated me if I was like that.
05:11They hated you anyway.
05:13Yeah, they hated me anyway.
05:14But also, I mean, now, you know, I feel like we are funny on and off screen.
05:19I think the greatest misconception is when people say, you'll just come out and do five
05:23minutes.
05:24Right.
05:25Five minutes?
05:26Yeah.
05:27It's like two months and experience and trying it out and writing and throwing stuff out.
05:34Just do the five minutes.
05:35It'll be fine.
05:36It's easy.
05:37Well, I think comedic actors are interesting combinations because they, to make it interesting,
05:42it has to be real.
05:43But then you have to find out what's funny about it.
05:45Right.
05:46So I think the main core is making it real.
05:49Round three.
05:51Oh.
05:52Selena.
05:53Oh, dear.
05:54Do you have a favorite Mabel look from any season of Omit B?
05:58You know, this one is probably not what people would expect, but I wore this orange jumpsuit
06:07in season one when you were using the locks to get in.
06:13And I thought that was such a cool look.
06:15It felt very effortless.
06:18To me, your entrance on episode one, walking down the street, is an iconic moment.
06:25I mean, you're going to see that in your histories.
06:29That's going to be the first thing.
06:31Do a leap of song.
06:32And I love that one guy says, where are you going, girl?
06:35He said, where are you going looking so tough?
06:37That's it.
06:38That's it.
06:39I have a question for Steve.
06:42What was the most challenging scene to film this season?
06:46This season?
06:47It's a trick question, because you never pulled one off.
06:50Yeah.
06:51But if you had to decide, what would you say was the most challenging scene to film this season for?
06:56Well, there is a shot that you're in, too, and that made it doubly hard, where we're
07:03climbing on ledges.
07:06That's right.
07:07Ledges.
07:08That's like acting with dinosaurs in green screen, so you have to pretend that you're
07:13200 feet up in the air.
07:15And I'd call it that, if I go with that.
07:19Great.
07:20What do you enjoy the most about playing Oliver?
07:23I love playing Oliver's narcissism.
07:27I love his attempts at being hip when he calls Steve bruh or dude.
07:34Nothing is funnier than a 74-year-old trying to be hip.
07:37All right.
07:38It is the lightning round.
07:40Oh, I love lightning round.
07:41I love the lightning round.
07:42Oh, that's so much fun.
07:43Okay.
07:44Oh, dear.
07:45Yeah.
07:46Brat Summer or Demure Autumn?
07:48Demure Autumn.
07:50I'd have to go with Demure Autumn.
07:52Yeah.
07:53I have one.
07:54Y'all don't know what any of these means.
07:55I don't really know what either of them means.
07:56Yeah, it's okay.
07:57I'll teach you later.
07:58Okay.
07:59I'm going with Demure.
08:00Selena?
08:01Go.
08:02Left or right?
08:03Ask me that.
08:04We'll get to it when Selena answers.
08:05Okay, go ahead.
08:06Needy.
08:07Right.
08:08Left or right?
08:09Right.
08:10Left or right?
08:11Wow.
08:12That was interesting.
08:13Overdressed or underdressed?
08:14Underdressed.
08:15Underdressed.
08:16Voice note or text message?
08:17Voice note.
08:18Well, yeah, but you all...
08:19Yeah, you...
08:20No, I do both, but I like hearing someone's voice.
08:23Morning or night?
08:24Morning.
08:25Morning.
08:26Night.
08:27Podcasts or audiobooks?
08:30Podcasts.
08:31Podcasts.
08:32New York or LA?
08:34Ooh.
08:35That's hard.
08:36That's a tough one.
08:37That's really tough.
08:38New York because, you know, it's where my family and my child goes to school.
08:42I've lived here for too long.
08:44You have your sponge baths there.
08:45I have my family.
08:46That's true.
08:47Yeah.
08:48I have my family here, so I...
08:49Yeah, yeah.
08:50All right.
08:51Favorite song to listen to?
08:52As of now, probably...
08:55Can we include our own?
08:57I've recently been listening to the song Fish Heads.
09:02Do you know the song Fish Heads?
09:04Fish heads, fish heads, roly poly fish heads.
09:08Fish heads, fish heads, eat them up, yum.
09:14Did you have...
09:15No, the reason I've been listening to...
09:16No, no, no, but let me ask you something, because I think it answers a question we all have.
09:20Did you have a head injury this morning?
09:24Favorite age time in your life?
09:27Now, for me.
09:28I'd say now.
09:29Now.
09:30For me, the whole journey.
09:31Favorite time of the year?
09:33Fall.
09:35Christmas.
09:36I'd call it...
09:38We're out of time.
09:39Thank you so much.
09:40Sorry, Vogue.
09:41We love you.
09:43I don't care what time of the year it is, as long as it's 73 degrees.
09:47I feel like I learn something new about you guys every day.
09:52And it's not always the best.
09:56No, it is.
09:57It is.
09:58I have learned stuff about Steve that I have gone to a hypnotist later to try to forget
10:03and take out of my system.
10:04I try not to learn from anybody.
10:06Oh, I know.
10:07Yeah.
10:08Well, thank you guys for watching.
10:09This has been Off the Cuff.
10:11And we'll see you next time.
10:27Bye.
10:28Bye.
10:29Bye.
10:30Bye.
10:31Bye.
10:32Bye.
10:33Bye.
10:34Bye.
10:35Bye.
10:36Bye.
10:37Bye.
10:38Bye.
10:39Bye.
10:40Bye.
10:41Bye.
10:42Bye.
10:43Bye.
10:44Bye.
