00:00Alright Gator, with Gator being back today, I want to get your thoughts on the Lions final
00:0753-man roster and surprises with the practice squad.
00:11So the surprises on the 53-man roster were the Strickland kid, the safety making it,
00:18was Parker Hess making it over Zylstra and Mitchell, was Hendon Hooker making it over
00:25Nate Sudfeld after what was said last week, and then Jake Fromm making the practice squad
00:30over Nate Sudfeld.
00:31What do you make of the final roster?
00:35I like it because everybody you were kind of disappointed about, they didn't make the
00:41team, they made the practice squad.
00:44Somehow Draft Ninja, Brad Holmes, became Roster Ninja and Roster Jedi, because convinced you
00:53don't need any of our players.
00:56And I'm totally surprised by that.
00:58So I think it's going to be a fluid situation with players that are on the practice squad,
01:04they might have an opportunity to make the big, they're going to be injuries anyway.
01:09So I'm not going to lie though, I'm surprised at some of those moves where the players got
01:15in over other players.
01:17How about them having four wide receivers on the practice squad?
01:21And Brad Holmes said, we weren't going to give out a fifth spot just to have a fifth
01:24wide receiver.
01:26But it feels to me like they're still kind of searching for another wide receiver.
01:32When you bring in Alan Robinson, you bring in Tim Patrick, you bring back Donovan Peoples-Jones,
01:39and you bring back Tom Kennedy as one does every year.
01:45What do you make of that four wide receivers on the practice squad?
01:48I think it's internal competition again.
01:52We didn't really resolve things with the preseason and training camp.
01:56So we need you guys to come out there and show what you can.
02:02The practice squad guys are going to be scout team guys, they're going to get reps against
02:05some pretty good players, and they're going to have opportunities each and every day to
02:10prove themselves.
02:11So if I were one of those wide receivers, I would take it as such, hey, all right, you
02:16got to go out there and prove it.
02:18Because I don't think they're married to the final guys that made the roster.
02:23No, no, the bottom three, four spots on that roster are going to be rotating.
02:28And then there's always injuries.
02:29You just never know how that's going to play itself out.
02:32The Jake Fromm thing is interesting.
02:35Yeah.
02:37I said this yesterday, and then Kang had found a soundbite from Brad Holmes that kind of
02:41confirmed it.
02:43Brad Holmes talked about how much he liked him out of Georgia.
02:46And I'm like, this is a guy he was eyeing to draft.
02:49It's one of those, I finally got my hands on this guy.
02:51He really wanted to draft him.
02:53And when you heard him talk, he had a lot of praise for him.
03:00Pretty complimentary, if you will, on him coming out of Georgia.
03:05But has your faith been shaken a little bit, Doug?
03:08And Kang.
03:09I mean, this was the guy.
03:11We all believe what they have to say, right?
03:14Upper hand.
03:15Yeah.
03:16Nate Sutfeld has the upper hand, and yet Nate Sutfeld's not on the roster and not on the
03:21practice squad.
03:24Was there some hoodwinking going on?
03:25This is in reference to something that I have said and Kang has also come on board with,
03:30which is, I believe absolutely everything that Brad Holmes and Dan Campbell have said.
03:33I've spent my entire professional career being skeptical of everything that came out of the
03:38Detroit Lions.
03:39And when you heard hype, I'm like, I'll believe it when I see it, too.
03:42There was always that undercurrent of, I'll believe it when I see it.
03:48And now I'm like, I just believe it.
03:51So last week, yes, Dan Campbell said Nate Sutfeld has the upper hand.
03:57A week later, he not only didn't have the upper hand, two quarterbacks passed him and
04:01he got straight up released.
04:04And so Gator is asking, is our faith rattled, Kang, in Dan Campbell?
04:10Gator, Dan Campbell lied to us.
04:13Oh boy.
04:14He lied to us, Doug.
04:15Just accept it.
04:17I'm back on board with Gator.
04:19Campbell was talking all this jive, you know, this camp talk, you know, that they all do.
04:23It was just coach speak.
04:24That's all.
04:25Coach speak.
04:26Yup.
04:27It's okay.
04:28Dude, how do you go from upper hand till you got fired on your day off?
04:30They sat him the final preseason game thinking, you're good, bro.
04:33Don't worry.
04:34You ain't got nothing else to prove.
04:35We've seen what you have to offer.
04:38From comes in for four snaps.
04:40All right.
04:41Well, you know, things have changed, my friend.
04:43I'm sorry.
04:44And not only did he get passed over by Hendon Hooker, but from?
04:50Let's be clear here.
04:53Dan Campbell didn't cut Nate Sudfeld.
04:57Brad Holmes cut Nate Sudfeld.
04:58Oh, you saying they're fighting?
04:59No.
05:00It's NBD.
05:01No big deal.
05:02No big deal.
05:03NBD.
05:04They share the same brain, Doug.
05:08Yeah.
05:09I mean.
05:10Not on everything.
05:11I think Dan Campbell has a big say in who gets cut.
05:14I think he does have a big say.
05:15No, but I mean, all honesty, anybody surprised really in the end that Nate Sudfeld isn't
05:22here?
05:23I mean, we were surprised he had the upper hand.
05:24Yeah, exactly.
05:25That's what we were surprised about.
05:26Yeah.
05:27That was like, upper hand, huh?
05:30Okay.
05:31Maybe you're seeing something I haven't seen.
05:32Okay.
05:33He's going against tougher competition.
05:34He's in the beginning of games as opposed to later on, like when, when we see Hendon
05:38Hooker.
05:39Okay.
05:40And then he had the last preseason game and Hendon Hooker.
05:41He was okay.
05:42He was better.
05:43It may be better than okay.
05:44He obviously makes plays with his feet and pretty heady player.
05:47Really like Hendon Hooker.
05:48Did he pass Nate Sudfeld?
05:50Apparently so.
05:52Nate Sudfeld, the reason he was still even in contention, I feel is that maybe this coaching
06:00staff just, they like him for a calming influence he might have with Jared Goff or, or because
06:05he can see plays and what, what is supposed to happen.
06:08The problem with Nate Sudfeld is that he doesn't have the talent to make them happen.
06:13You know, it's like the old adage, those who can do those who can't teach.
06:17And some people take that as an insult and I wouldn't take that as an insult at all.
06:21Right.
06:22What it is, and one of the most important life lessons that you can have is knowing
06:27what your limitations are.
06:29Like if you know the playbook, you know what they're supposed to happen.
06:31We'll just go out and do it.
06:32I physically can't.
06:33I'm not fast enough to move to the outside or maneuver through the pocket to buy myself
06:37time.
06:38I can't do that, but I know that that's the route to do it.
06:41Or maybe I just don't have the arm strength to make that play, but that play is there
06:45and I'm telling you, you can do it.
06:47I mean, I feel like that's what Nate Sudfeld is.
06:49He's like an extra coach and don't be surprised if you hear that he's added to a coaching
06:54staff in years down the line.
