00:00So we're here at the Bricklayers Arms in Shrewsbury and a Jewels pub, it's just
00:05had a quite a bit of money spent on it hasn't it guys? You're at the
00:10helm of the ship, how you doing? Scott and Caroline, nice to meet you.
00:14Nice to meet you too. So we were just having a little chat off camera, this is your first
00:19venture into the pub life isn't it? What were you up to before doing this
00:23then Caroline, let's start with you. I've been in kids publishing for around about 12 to 15 years but then I've had various jobs in between as well.
00:33So you were publishing and what about yourself sir? So I'm in software
00:39currently. So what was it, you just wanted something that was a bit more
00:42out there in amongst the community or that kind of you know what was it that
00:47drew you to it? So we moved back to Shrewsbury about three years ago and we've been living in Wem for 15
00:55years and knew that we wanted the best way to get into the communities to join
00:58clubs and social events and when the opportunity came up to to get involved
01:03at the Bricklayers we jumped at it. Had you been here before as a punter? Yeah we'd
01:08walk our dogs here and often sat in this very bare garden after the dog walk and
01:13then we'd also had some roast dinners here. So if someone would have come and tapped you on the shoulder then and said one day you'll be running this, what would you have thought?
01:24Especially as this has all happened really fast, within six weeks we never thought we'd end the process at the 11th hour, not half expecting to even be selected.
01:34So it's all moved so quickly, but really exciting. Yeah well they've spent a bit of money on it, just fill us in if we're people who haven't been to the
01:42Bricklayers then, if you were going to kind of, if somebody meets you on holiday and says oh what kind of pub is it then, go on talk us through, because there's been a bit of money spent on the
01:50conservatory set terraced area but fill us in on, describe the pub. It's been a big
01:56investment all the way through the pub really, so the new extension is amazing
02:00that the Jools team have built, but yeah the whole pub's been transformed in the
02:06bar and the snug area as well, in the kitchen and yeah it's going to be a
02:11traditional pub with real ales and early October we'll start doing food and again the menu will follow with traditional pub food and with a bit of a twist.
02:23Who will be in charge of the kitchen, is that any of you or has that come to someone else that one?
02:27We've got a head chef. Have you? Very wise. I think the main appeal will be the fact that it will reach every demographic now though, you've got the trial and tap area which will be
02:38for those that are younger or young at heart definitely and then you've got the
02:43snug and bar area for those that really appreciate a good ale and then through to
02:48fine dining but the dining area as well which will be a great roast dinner at a fair price.
02:54And any entertainment, any music, any of that kind of stuff going on?
02:59Yeah we've already got several bands and singers lined up so there'll be lots of
03:06entertainment so Friday nights mostly and then there'll be specials on the menus
03:13throughout the week. Yeah we're really going to engage the community and have
03:19lots of different events and social gatherings really. And we've also got something that nobody else in Shrewsbury's got and that's a shuffleboard.
03:26Shuffleboard? What's a shuffleboard? We're going to have shuffleboard Sundays.
03:30You need to come and take a look. Yeah we might get it. What's a shuffleboard, is that like a traditional game then?
03:34Yeah, where you get your puck and slide your puck along.
03:40Wow okay well that'll keep them occupied for a bit wouldn't it? Sounds like good fun.
03:45So I guess at this stage nerves, bit of nerves, bit of excitement or you're just too busy to even?
03:51Yeah I mean we have been busy so really nerves go to the side don't they?
03:56Yeah they just want to get stuck in now. I think it's just it's the fear of the unknown whereas
04:00when you're just doing it those nerves will go and just being around people they just already feel
04:05a million times energized. Yeah yeah and the kind of people you get here I guess it's a lot of
04:10a lot of locals, a lot of regulars, that kind of vibe? It's a local pub. It's a proper community pub.
04:14Yeah yeah well it's a lovely looking pub, people will be able to see that on the video and it's on
04:19Cockthorn Road, that's right isn't it? So come and get yourselves down and thank you guys and
04:23good luck, all the best with it. Thanks very much, look forward to seeing you all. Thank you.
04:28What's your name sir? Phil. Phil, how you doing Phil? I'm good, my daughter and son-in-law are the new
04:34managers of this year's establishment, Retire's Intro. Great stuff, great stuff and this is
04:40fantastic, shuffleboard yeah? Shuffleboard yes. So what what do you have to do? Go on. Okay well I'm
04:48very new to this, I've only just seen it for the first time, I've never seen it in a pub before
04:52because you need a really good sized pub to be able to put a board like this in
04:57and basically you and your opponent at the other, standing opposite ends of the board,
05:03yeah you have four of these counters like mini curling stones. Curling, that's what it reminds
05:10me of isn't it? Yes and basically you've got a score of one, two and three. Yeah.
05:18And you take it in turns, you can knock your opponent. So how have you been faring,
05:25have you just discovered a new talent? Yeah yeah yeah, since retirement this could be
05:30my new big thing. This could be it, I will link you to it then, cheers.
