Cabot sent us another round of Macs, including their 4 cheese Italian, American, Buffalo, and Guinness caramelized onion. We also discuss the downfall of fast food.

00:00Frankie Cabot's back, today on Box Mac!
00:02♪♪
00:14The fine folks at Cabot have once again...
00:16You should wear a Cabot hat, by the way.
00:18That seems like a thing you should do.
00:19There you go.
00:20Now you're looking like a real farmer, Frankie.
00:22We've never been sponsored by any Macs before.
00:25No.
00:26But Cabot keeps sending us Macs?
00:27Yes.
00:28Does that mean it's sponsored?
00:29No.
00:30I wouldn't sponsor anybody.
00:31Ah, I wouldn't sponsor it.
00:33I would buy the cheapest cheese on sale.
00:35It's not like we're paid to say it's good.
00:38We have had Cabot Macs that we were not impressed with.
00:40That's a fairly common thing on YouTube.
00:41They send you something for free in hopes that you'll review it in a positive light,
00:46but they don't require it.
00:47So, but we've got four new Macs from Cabot.
00:49First off, we've got this.
00:50Do you remember that Guinness Mac, which we really enjoyed?
00:53Now they've upped the ante with caramelized onion and macaroni and cheese, so that's pretty
00:57exciting.
00:58I love caramelized onions.
00:59Yeah.
01:00What is beeping?
01:01The microwave is full of ghosts.
01:02I'm sorry.
01:03That's what you have to do to it.
01:04Come on.
01:05There.
01:06It's good now.
01:07Power cycle?
01:08It won't beep anymore.
01:09And we've got this one, which I'm really excited about.
01:12This is a buffalo cheddar mac and cheese.
01:15Now their basic form of the deluxe wasn't all that hot.
01:18And then we've got another one that I'm kind of excited about, which is American.
01:21Does that imply it's American cheese?
01:23Yeah, I think so.
01:24Well, they've got on the back a picture of their brand of American cheese, which I have
01:27had.
01:28And let me tell you, it tastes exactly like every other American cheese I've ever had.
01:32So I can't say anything special about it.
01:33It's fine.
01:34It's good American cheese.
01:35I guess in terms of branding and marketing, that's a little bit smarter than just saying
01:38sharp cheddar, original, standard.
01:40It definitely drew my attention.
01:42Whereas this, for cheese Italian, I'm interested, but it's not new and exciting.
01:46Well, keep your mind open.
01:47Any one of these could be great.
01:48Any one of these could be crap.
01:49You're right, Frankie.
01:50When are they going to invite us up to the farm?
01:52Oh, I would love to.
01:53And kind of let us see how the cheese is made.
01:56Yeah.
01:57We'll drive up and say hello.
01:58Did I say I went to Vermont a few months ago?
02:00Did you?
02:01Nina and I ran a 10 miler up there.
02:02Oh, wow.
02:03It was gorgeous.
02:04I love that area.
02:05Frankie, the tour of Vermont someday.
02:06Yeah.
02:07Someday.
02:08I mean, if Jump Horse happened, radiatory, non-alcoholic, how do you improve the ultimate
02:11comfort food?
02:12Add the distinctly smooth flavor of Guinness.
02:14I think this is exactly what they said about the last one, except caramelized onions now.
02:17You want to know where I fell in love with caramelized onions?
02:20Where?
02:21Not Your Average Joe's bread.
02:22Oh, yeah.
02:23Not Your Average Joe's is a casual family restaurant with over a dozen locations throughout
02:27Massachusetts, so you don't have to commute for cuisine.
02:30And it's affordable, too.
02:32But the most affordable and fulfilling food at Joe's is the complimentary cone-shaped
02:37basket of Tuscan-style bread, along with a spicy olive oil dip infused with Parmesan
02:42and garlic.
02:43Let me tell you, the locations where you're branded as Not Your Average Joe's are no
02:47good now.
02:48Joe's Original?
02:49Joe's Original.
02:50Because it's still run by the guy.
02:51What happened there?
02:52It's like the Papa John situation, where they ousted Papa John, and then he had to
02:56do his own...
02:57I would just say, stay tuned, the day of reckoning will come, the record will be straight.
03:04Why not set the record straight now?
03:05I mean, what is it about the record that's not straight?
03:09Stay tuned.
03:10The guy, I don't remember his name, unfortunately.
03:12Joe!
03:13He's...
03:14Interestingly, there was a chain of stores in New Bedford called Silverstein's, which
03:18was a children's clothing shop, and it's his son who runs Not Your Average Joe's.
03:23He made that chain, had like 14 locations, sold it off, but kept the one, Dartmouth,
03:28his first.
03:29And it's a different menu?
03:30What happened happens to all chain restaurants.
03:32They get bought, it starts off fine, then cheapening of the menu, reducing the quality
03:38of the ingredients.
03:39Yeah, but what's the root cause of that?
03:40Is it the larger company is monitoring profit more closely?
03:44Yes.
03:45Anything that's held by one of those holding companies, it's always going to be pushed
03:47towards the bottom line.
03:48They're not going to want to spend weeks to hire a chef for a location.
03:50They're going to want to make the food in such a way that you can hire basically a prep
03:54cook to do the meal.
03:55And like, TGI Friday's used to be a good place to eat, and now it's all food in a bag.
03:59Applebee's, even like Pub 99, it used to be pretty good, it used to be great, actually.
04:03But despite that, don't you think that smart, rich people should know what makes a place
04:07special?
04:08When you get to that corporate level, they don't care.
04:10Well, so yeah, this is a fascinating topic that I can't get enough of.
04:13Yeah, I actually love this topic too.
04:15Which is, when does the consumer stop?
04:17Because that would be when that corporation would have to adjust.
04:19Yeah.
04:20Well, this is what's going on with McDonald's right now, actually.
04:22They just did their earnings call that McDonald's is not growing anymore because they've raised
04:26their prices too high.
04:27McDonald's costs about as much as going to a low-end sit-down restaurant.
04:32It's getting into Texas Roadhouse territory, which is one of the last low-end good restaurants.
04:36So they had to tell their investors they're going to lower the prices, and the stock went
04:39way, way down.
04:40$17 for three filet-o-fishes at McDonald's?
04:43Are you kidding me?
04:45Every time I drive by a Dunkin' Donuts drive-thru line, I'm like, I don't get it, guys.
04:49Yeah, that place used to be great.
04:50They had great drinks, and the donuts were fabulous, they had great bagels.
04:54It's all pretty lousy now.
04:55I think it's lower than cafeteria.
04:56Yeah.
04:57I mean, it's really bad.
04:58It's awful.
04:59I think.
05:00And I see lines that are like a mile long, people waiting a half hour for trash.
05:05How can it be this inexpensive and good?
05:08We're out of coffee.
05:09Oh, you're out of coffee?
05:10Yeah, we got no coffee and no donuts.
05:13What do you got?
05:14Water.
05:15And let me tell you, the only businesses which this hasn't happened to, really, are the ones
05:18that are backed by someone who has really strong, usually hits people with really strong
05:23religious belief.
05:24Texas Roadhouse is one of them.
05:25Because they're values led.
05:26Yeah, it's values.
05:27Think about the people you're serving.
05:28But I need to return to this core issue, which is, isn't it the people's fault?
05:31Because they just keep going.
05:33What is going on?
05:34I don't know.
05:35Do they not realize?
05:36It's supermarkets, too.
05:37Somebody was doing, there's this great TikTok video, I love TikTok, even though it's terrible.
05:41They had a package of Pop-Tarts from 2011, and they took out one today, and it is pathetic.
05:45The frosting is tiny, it's way thinner, there's hardly any filling, there's like a millimeter
05:50filling whereas there was like three millimeters of filling before.
05:53But Pop-Tarts is still a big selling national brand.
05:55You can slide a hand all this stuff all day long.
05:58Yeah, eventually though, consumers who are a little younger than us, people who are about
06:0130 and younger now, are very savvy to this.
06:05And they're not going to take it.
06:06They'll just kill those brands.
06:07I feel like they're not savvy, too.
06:09Well, I just feel like all I see are masses of people of all ages taking it.
06:13Can I get a Boston cream and a large regular, please?
06:16Is there just no alternative?
06:17Is that the problem?
06:18I don't get it.
06:19I don't get society.
06:20I'm feeling it all bad.
06:21I mean, I think sometimes, like with Dunkin' Donuts, to use that example, they've got some
06:24sugary drinks that are probably, some people are maybe a little addicted to.
06:27Sugar and caffeine, that's all they need.
06:29Yeah.
06:30I guess I have one Christmas donut for the Texas round snake, and that's the bottom line.
06:36These Macs are low prep Macs, reduced butter Macs.
06:39They're butter optional Macs.
06:41And you know, that's a big no-no for me.
06:42Sends a signal that you're not committed to your Mac.
06:44I mean, well, maybe.
06:46In this case, I get more of the impression, based on the branding, that they're trying
06:49to say, like, if you're trying to cut out butter, if you don't like butter, if we're
06:53confident in our cheese, we are a cheese brand.
06:56They also happen to be a butter brand.
06:59You got to accept that boxed macaroni and cheese is not a health food, and don't try
07:03to optional butter me.
07:04There's probably market research that's like, it's helpful to say that butter is optional.
07:08I was tempted to just make it my way, but we shouldn't do that because of the show,
07:12right?
07:13Burger King slogan?
07:14Speaking of places that are slightly on the rebound, Burger King, a little bit?
07:17Well, let me say this.
07:18I'm not here to simp for any fast food.
07:20Sure.
07:21But Burger King's food, from my estimation, is significantly better than, let's start
07:26with McDonald's.
07:27Burger for burger.
07:28But what I find, and maybe this is just our area, the Burger King service is quite low.
07:33They lured me in recently with their $2 double cheeseburger offer.
07:36I got really good service.
07:37Somebody was following the script to like saying, you know, have a great day and you
07:40know.
07:41I've gone to the drive-thru in that Fall River one at South Coast Marketplace.
07:44Yeah.
07:45That one is terrible.
07:46Don't drive through.
07:47They will pretty much guaranteed get your order wrong.
07:48It's like people on parole.
07:49What's your order?
07:50Do you have a BK order?
07:52Maybe like Whopper Junior Meal or like, I like the original chicken.
07:55A lot of people say it's garbage.
07:57$2 double cheeseburger?
07:59Yeah.
08:00If you get like two burgers and a shake at Five Guys, it's like $25.
08:03I know.
08:04But it's good.
08:05It's real good.
08:07I think Five Guys fries are kind of lousy.
08:08Yeah, no, no.
08:09I have no truck with their fries.
08:11I know there's people out there who have my back on this and there are some people who
08:14disagree tremendously.
08:16French fries that are not crispy and are instead like plumpy and potato-y, I do not like.
08:21I do not want it.
08:22Generally, these are referred to as steak fries.
08:24Yeah.
08:25I do not like steak fries.
08:26They're too hot in the middle, seasoned unpredictably.
08:28They require a sauce that's not ketchup.
08:31Is Taco Bell any good?
08:32I never...
08:33Taco Bell's delicious.
08:34It's still good?
08:35It's not good, but it's delicious.
08:36Also staffed by criminals.
08:38Yeah.
08:39I mean, I get that those people need a place to work.
08:41That's fine.
08:42Yeah, I'm not saying don't go there because they work there.
08:44I'm just saying you get their service.
08:46Well, you know what?
08:48Here's what I'll say about Taco Bell.
08:49If you go in an order, you're going to be waiting a long time.
08:52If you do drive-thru, you're going to fly right through.
08:54Well, they get penalized on drive-thru if it's slow.
08:57Really?
08:58They get penalized on scoundrel.
08:59How's that looking, Frankie?
09:00Ah, pretty mediocre.
09:02That's the American cheese.
09:03But you know who's going to love this?
09:04Who?
09:05Gloria, were you looking forward to a nice normal, like, kids macaroni and cheese?
09:09Because that's what I got right here.
09:10I mean, there's some new ideas here.
09:11I appreciate that.
09:12The Guinness is, like, legitimately very good.
09:14So Nina has taken up a new supermarket shopping strategy.
09:18She gets all of our dry food online from a place called Thrive Market.
09:22Okay.
09:23And then we just buy produce on the weekends.
09:25This does not sound like it would save you any money.
09:27It ain't about money.
09:28Maybe that's not the point.
09:29No, it's to save time.
09:30It's a millennial trap.
09:31Oh, save time.
09:32I see.
09:33Okay.
09:34You know, I used to not identify with millennials.
09:35But as we get older as a generation, I'm starting to think maybe the millennials are starting
09:40to come into their own.
09:41You open up that Thrive Market, it has, like, Annie's brands up front, you got that Bob
09:46Red Mill guy.
09:47Sure.
09:48She did buy some Annie's.
09:49Nina Sholesky, ladies and gentlemen.
09:50Nina Sholesky!
09:51It's about saving time and not having to make these a big, like, grocery haul and then forgetting
09:54certain things and then having to run out three times a week.
09:57We're not good about having a list when we go to our supermarket.
09:58I can order all of my dry goods and staples, and they will deliver them on a recurring
10:02schedule.
10:03And I can just run into the grocery store quickly for, like, ten minutes to get a package.
10:07Which, when you have a child, you know, the supermarket shop, there's a little more urgency
10:10to that.
10:11It eats into your weekend.
10:12Because if you can't go out grocery shopping at 1pm on Friday.
10:14It could have been so bad.
10:15It could have been a disaster.
10:16I definitely understand the idea of paying a little money to get some of your time back.
10:21I have been seriously considering, Frankie, trying to find a house cleaner.
10:25Like a biannual deep clean?
10:26No.
10:27Like, probably a weekly or bi-weekly.
10:29To like, do the bathroom, do the shower.
10:31Don't even think about it.
10:32No, Matt wouldn't want to do it.
10:34My sister does, and I was like, why the hell am I not doing this?
10:36I have money.
10:37I could, I hate deep scrubbing the toilet every week, you know?
10:40You want to talk about wasting money?
10:42This guy gets massages.
10:43Look, I would like-
10:44Hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey, hey.
10:46I never spent one dime on a massage.
10:48Is there a story to tell here?
10:50You want to stop spreading misinformation?
10:52Nina's mom and stepdad were nice enough to be like, we'd like to gift you guys some
10:56home massages.
10:57They had been getting it for like, PT purposes.
10:59They were like, this is great.
11:00They come to your house with the thing, and you know, we'll order one hour for Nina, one
11:05hour for Frankie.
11:06Everybody's very concerned.
11:07She'll take Gloria for the night, and we'll like, we'll just hang out at home and get
11:12massages.
11:13And it freaked Frankie out.
11:14The first time it happened, I was a little, I was like, this is going to be weird.
11:16We're going to have like, somebody we don't know in the house, and then the other person
11:19has to like, go be scarce.
11:20Like, they're not going to like, hang out in the living room while it's going on.
11:22But then we did it.
11:23And you know what?
11:24She popped on the Eastern calming music, and I did it for an hour.
11:28And then I was like, completely sleepy and happy.
11:32Then Nina goes to do it.
11:33Now, Nina is very sensitive to the touch, you'll find.
11:36Yes, yes.
11:37Ticklish.
11:38And so for her, it's something to endure.
11:39So then the third time, Nina was like, why don't you just have my hour?
11:41So she did me for two hours, and I was like, this is going to be great.
11:44I got two hours.
11:45It's too long.
11:46Yeah.
11:47Let's start with the Guinness.
11:48Do I do Guinness?
11:49Yeah.
11:50Yeah.
11:51Is mine mixed up with buffalo a little bit?
11:52No.
11:53It is buffalo.
11:54This is buffalo.
11:55I'm eating buffalo accidentally?
11:56This is buffalo.
11:57Okay.
11:58The buffalo is very interesting.
11:59I wouldn't say it's amazing, but it's all right.
12:00The buffalo?
12:01Yeah.
12:02It's pretty good for a box mac.
12:03Yeah.
12:04I'm not sure you're going to do much better than that.
12:05I mean, sure, if you did a big homemade thing, but.
12:06The cheese comes through nicely, which I'll say is better than a lot of buffalo flavored
12:09stuff I've had.
12:10No, no.
12:11You're going to, that's a pretty good box mac.
12:12It's good.
12:13The pasta is great.
12:14All you'd have to do is cut up some chicken in that, and you would just.
12:15You would.
12:16You're absolutely right.
12:17You'd be there.
12:18Yep.
12:19All right.
12:20It's delicious.
12:21Yeah.
12:22Caramelized onion flavor in there.
12:23Really?
12:24And the Guinness is still there.
12:25Who knew that I'd like this Guinness stuff?
12:26Just really nicely balanced flavor profile.
12:27Wow, wow, wow.
12:28That Guinness is delicious, actually.
12:29It's like one heck of a mac.
12:30He's saying it's winning awards.
12:32It is really good.
12:33I can recommend that one.
12:34As far as box macs go, do you think it's a top 15 of all time?
12:37Yeah, I do.
12:38Can I ask you, if nobody told you that was Guinness, would you think it was Guinness?
12:40I don't think I would have a clue.
12:41No.
12:42I think I'd be like, wow, it's a really awesome cheese.
12:44The interesting thing is they've toned down the Guinness flavor a little to make room
12:47for the caramelized onion.
12:48It's so good.
12:49And that makes it really nice.
12:50Because I did like the other one, but it was a little strong.
12:52This one's better than the last Guinness.
12:54Yeah, it is.
12:55It's excellent.
12:56All right, let's try the white.
12:57This is the Italian.
12:58Strong cheese bite.
12:59Yeah, it's okay.
13:00It's good.
13:01Kind of like store brandy.
13:02I think it's a little above the basic store brand.
13:05Yeah.
13:07It's all right.
13:08I just had two really good macs.
13:09Yeah.
13:10Let's try the final one, which is the American cheese.
13:12I think this is going to be pretty basic.
13:13Oh, yeah.
13:14It's weak.
13:15Extremely weak.
13:17Let's try one of the premiums and knock your socks off.
13:19Now the buffalo's even better.
13:21Right.
13:22Would anybody like to try it?
13:23Come get some, Glo.
13:24John, would you get her a little teeny tiny?
13:25I like the basic American.
13:26Do you?
13:27It kind of reminds me of like a very classic box mac and cheese.
13:31What do you think?
13:32The taste is really good, except it's still kind of hot.
13:36Oh, yeah.
13:37A little too hot.
13:38Yeah.
13:39You can take it back to mom if you'd like.
13:40Trying the Italian.
13:41Known for their restraint.
13:42It's nice.
13:43Basic.
13:44There is some good cheese flavor in there.
13:46Those two basic ones are not worth anybody's time.
13:48I like them.
13:49Cat.
13:50The buffalo, I like it.
13:51It's nice and cheesy.
13:52The caramelized onion is very good.
13:53Yeah.
13:54I'm not going to waste my time with the other ones.
13:55I'm just going to get the-
13:56Go ahead.
13:57Guinness and the buffalo, I recommend.
13:58A lot of boys in the kitchen today.
13:59This is like a Christmas episode.
14:00We're all excited to be here.
14:01Yeah.
14:02Oh, yeah.
14:03That's the Guinness.
14:04Oh, yeah.
14:05Really nice flavor.
14:06It's just like, it keeps unfolding.
14:07Yeah.
14:08It's like a natural unfold.
14:09It's not like chemically or anything.
14:10Yeah.
14:11That was really good.
14:12That was really good.
14:13It's like a natural unfold.
14:14It's not like chemically or anything.
14:15Yeah.
14:16That was very satisfying.
14:17Three of those macs I really liked, and two were pretty excellent, and one was fabulous.
14:21According to Gloria, I like the taste.
14:23It's just kind of hot.
14:24Yeah.
14:25Would you go and buy one of those radiatory ones?
14:27I would buy the Guinness one.
14:28Maybe the buffalo on an occasion, but I have a feeling this mac's going to be expensive.
14:32That one's worth it.
14:33To have with a breast of chicken or something on the side, delicious.
14:36You're trying to save for that cleaner.
14:37Yeah.
14:38That cleaning lady.
14:39You're like, I'm going to have a cheap mac, but I'm going to have a clean house.
14:42Exactly.
14:43I'm going to have a clean house.
14:44Can I help you with your order, please?
14:45Medium or a large coffee, get a donut for an incremental dollar.
14:48You can have whatever you want for free.
14:50I can't make it function.
14:52Malfunction.
14:53It's not as easy as it looks operating this app, bro.
14:55I'm trying to compensate with comedy for my ineptitude.
