00:00Hi, welcome back to my channel, in this video, I will explain the Daphne Abdilla and Christopher

00:05Vasquez story, so let's begin.

00:08When a real estate agent named Michael McMorrow was found dead in the lake of New York's

00:12Central Park in 1997, the world-famous park grabbed the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

00:19In the episode titled Central Park Slaying of Netflix's Homicide New York, we are given

00:24a detailed account of the entire case, including the motive of the perpetrators and the investigation

00:29that followed.

00:30Moreover, interviews with Michael's loved ones and the officials involved in the case

00:34are included in the episode as well.

00:37On May 30, 1952, Charles and Margaret McMorrow gave birth to Michael McMorrow in New York.

00:44When he was in his pre-teens, the family moved from the Upper West Side in Manhattan to the

00:48Bronx in Bronx County.

00:51While growing up in University Heights in the western part of the borough, Michael was

00:54surrounded by the love and care of his parents and the support of his brother, Charles McMorrow,

00:59and sisters, Anne and Joan McMorrow.

01:02Anne passed away in 2016.

01:06He was a warm-hearted person whose outgoing and amiable personality made everyone around

01:10him comfortable.

01:12The good-humored and joyful nature of the Bronx Community College graduate is why his

01:15friends and loved ones enjoyed his pleasant company.

01:19He was lovingly referred to as Mike, Mikey, and Irish.

01:23The 44-year-old was an educated and responsible individual who had done well for himself in

01:28life.

01:30He was a skilled communicator and had been working as a real estate agent for a company

01:34in the Upper West Side neighborhood of Manhattan for years.

01:37Prior to that, he had also spent some time in Santa Monica, California for work.

01:43His employer and friend, Glenn Golub, described him as a talented individual who had just

01:48one weakness—alcohol.

01:50As per Michael's brother, Charles, the former even attended a rehab program for the same

01:55in the mid-1980s.

01:57While he was thriving professionally, Michael's purported alcohol issues served as a hindrance

02:01to his personal growth.

02:04Around the time of his death, Michael was single and had been residing with his ailing

02:07mother in the East Side of Manhattan, executing the responsibility of a caring son.

02:13Charles stated that when Michael wasn't working or tending to their mother, he enjoyed his

02:16late-night strolls in Central Park, situated between his place of work and home.

02:21While there, the 44-year-old would reportedly meet up with friends or attend the parties

02:25that were held in the park.

02:28One such visit to the park on the night of May 23, 1997, turned out to be his final one.

02:34On the fateful night, Michael was seemingly having a good time sharing drinks with a few

02:38people in the park.

02:40Sadly, that was the last time he was spotted by his loved ones.

02:45A few hours after midnight, the police received a call from a person who reported that their

02:49friend vanished after jumping into the lake.

02:52Upon reaching the location and extracting the badly slashed body that was floating on

02:56the lake, the authorities pulled the business card they found on the man and confirmed it

03:00was Michael McMorrow.

03:02As per the medical reports, the 44-year-old was stabbed over 30 times across the body,

03:07mutilated, and later dumped into the lake in Central Park.

03:12He was also stabbed six times in the heart, and his abdomen was gutted.

03:16An investigation into the murder of the real estate broker was immediately launched.

03:22After gathering the evidence from Michael McMorrow's lifeless body and the crime scene,

03:26the authorities immediately began interrogating key witnesses and potential suspects.

03:31Soon, they found out that Michael had crossed paths with Daphne Abdilla in an alcohol rehabilitation

03:36program.

03:37So, when he spotted her on the night of May 22, 1997, he approached her and her partner,

03:44Christopher Vasquez, to share a few beers with them.

03:47However, at the time, the teenagers were already quite drunk, and Daphne had been picking up

03:52fights with random adults on the same night.

03:55Soon, things escalated and turned serious when Michael allegedly began kissing Daphne

04:00and tried to undress her in the gazebo on the lake of Central Park, as Christopher,

04:04who was seemingly interested in Daphne in a romantic way, looked on.

04:08In a fit of rage, the jealous Christopher pulled out a knife and started to attack Michael

04:12with it.

04:14Reports suggested that Daphne joined her friend by kicking the 44-year-old man from behind

04:18on his leg with her rollerblades, making him lose his balance and lose his footing.

04:23The stabbing was so brutal that the realtor's head and hands were nearly severed from the

04:27body.

04:29In the early morning hours of May 23, 1997, after the stabbing, Daphne reportedly ordered

04:34Christopher to gut Michael's body and stuff it with rocks before dumping it into the lake

04:39to make it easier to sink him to the bottom of the lake.

04:42After committing the gruesome murder, the two 15-year-olds headed to Daphne's Central

04:46Park West apartment to wash away the traces of blood.

04:50Once Christopher left her place, Daphne called 911 and gave a detailed account of what had

04:54transpired in Central Park earlier, putting all the blame on him and taking no accountability

04:59for her actions.

05:01During the investigation, the detectives put both Daphne and Christopher at the very top

05:05of their list of suspects.

05:07Their suspicion turned into confirmation when they found Michael McMorrow's wallet in Daphne's

05:12room and a knife with his DNA in Christopher's room.

05:15Following the revelation of these crucial pieces of evidence, the police charged both

05:19the teens with murder and arrested them on May 23, 1997.

05:24In June 1997, Daphne Abdillah and Christopher Vasquez were indicted for murder and robbery.

05:30Then, in March 1998, Daphne admitted that she had participated in the killing of Michael

05:36McMorrow and pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the first degree.

05:40During her hearing, she read a statement in front of the court with tears in her eyes,

05:45In April 1998, she was sentenced to 39 months to 10 years in prison for her role in the

06:00murder of the real estate agent in May 1997.

06:04As for Christopher Vasquez, his trial began in November 1998, and in less than a month,

06:09he was convicted of first-degree manslaughter.

06:12As he managed to evade the more serious charge of second-degree murder, Michael McMorrow's

06:16family members were enraged as his nephew Matthew McMorrow stated,

06:20''How can anyone confuse 35 stab wounds with manslaughter?

06:24It's beyond comprehension.''

06:27In late January 1999, nearly two years after the murder, Christopher received the maximum

06:32term of three and one-third to 10 years in prison as it was recommended that he should

06:36not be paroled until after he served his 10-year sentence.

06:40After serving just six years out of the 10-year sentences, both Daphne and Christopher were

06:44released from prison in January 2004.

06:47However, the former got into trouble with the law again while still on parole in October

06:522004.

06:54She was arrested for making death threats over phone calls to a Brooklyn-based female

06:58ex-con.

07:00Under the new curfew restrictions, she was ordered to report home two hours earlier.

07:06Several years later, in April 2009, she resided on the Upper East Side and got involved in

07:10a crash with Karen Coniglio and Thomas Scappoli on First Avenue near 125th Street.

07:17She sustained a serious injury during the accident and was advised to stay in bed.

07:22Later, Daphne filed a lawsuit against Karen and Thomas for her pain and suffering.

07:28As of now, Daphne and Christopher seemingly lead a life away from the media and have managed

07:32to stay away from any run-ins with the law.
