I visited one of Edinburgh's oldest businesses to find out about their longevity

“People come back to us because they know us. They’ve known me since I was eight years old. They’ve known Kayleigh since she was a bump,” Liane Philips is explaining why her hardware store has been such a success in the Marchmont area of Edinburgh.

I paid a visit to Marchmont Hardware and Hill & Co Pet Shop to hear the story behind the two businesses that have succeeded for almost a century each.

00:18Customer bases so customers in common. They would shop with us. They also shopped with Brian when he had the business
00:27So, you know, there's there's change but there's not too much change that people can deal with
00:32Because a lot of our customers, you know, like seeing them grow seeing us grow, you know, they know us first name terms
00:42They come to us for that, you know, they come to us with all sorts, you know, we're not just the hardware and pet shop
00:49You know, if they're having a bad day, some of them will just pop in to say hi
00:53Especially a lot of the older customers that are on their own
00:56The hardware shops a place to go and we're finding that with pet as well
01:02You know, a lot of them have become really firm friends over the years, you know
01:07To the point if they have a bad time in their life, you know
01:11We'll be there for them as they have over the years for us
