00:00Welcome to our first episode of, hopefully, lots of episodes and lots of series of Current
00:25TV with Latest TV's look at electric vehicle ownership. And that's not just EVs, that's
00:31kind of, we're looking at bikes, transport, solar, charging, the whole lot. Harrison Hughes
00:38and myself, Bill Murray, are going to be taking you through a myriad of options that we have
00:44available at the moment. And thanks to our partners, Latest TV, we'll be looking at the
00:50very best and some of the more questionable options that are available for EV owners at
00:54the moment. Well, as you can see, we are in Jaguar Harwoods. I mean, you can't be in a better
00:58place. I'm waiting for my champagne to come out now, along with, just had my first coffee, now
01:03waiting for a champagne. This is a lovely dealership. So we're going to be basing ourselves around
01:07dealerships and looking at other dealerships around. We're based in Brighton today, but we're
01:10looking at a whole nation of eager people to jump into EVs. Today, we find ourselves at the Jaguar
01:18dealership just because we're looking at the Jaguar I-Pace, which is here, beautiful as it is. We've
01:24chosen the Jaguar I-Pace because I actually drive a Jaguar I-Pace. We're going to have a battle of
01:28the EVs and each week we're going to be looking at kind of pros and cons of owning and maintaining
01:34and servicing your EV. Now, I come from a place of wonder. I come from, if you imagine Nigel Havers
01:43and Jason Statham having a child, this is what the child would look like. It's a sexy child.
01:49The Jaguar I-Pace EV, this is pretty much what Tesla conversion therapy looks like.
01:57It has everything an EV could possibly offer you in terms of, well, it's a world of leather and
02:07Alcantara. It's got a wonderful drivetrain. It's all-wheel drive and it feels like it should be
02:14serving you afternoon tea when you get into the actual vehicle. However, it does have issues.
02:22I love it. I mean, I do love the I-Pace. When I drive yours for the rally, I mean,
02:26I stick it in dynamic mode and I've never driven an electric car like it.
02:29It's the whole car, it's vibrating as you're accelerating, the speakers are going because
02:34obviously there's no engine and it makes a great noise and it's the only EV driving experience
02:38that I remember. That is amazing, but I think it's dying. I don't think this is what people
02:46want anymore. How many Teslas do you see on the road? They're the best-selling car, full stop.
02:51Model Y, Model 3, another one just going past. They're everywhere and all they have is a screen.
02:57Just be honest, crap interior, but it's what people want now. They're used to using a screen
03:02all day. They're used to texting on their phone. They're used to working on a laptop. It's a similar
03:06experience. When I get into this, I don't know how to switch the heating on. I've driven a lot
03:11of different cars, but it's so confusing. There's so many dials, so many buttons and I don't know
03:16how long that's going to be able to last for because I don't think people want it anymore.
03:20Well, look, what Jaguar did and the wonderful people in Coventry have created something,
03:25like I say, of wonder. What they did is they created a car fit for old farts like myself.
03:33They didn't accommodate for young... Well, it makes sense. It's an 80 grand car.
03:39Exactly. It is an 80,000 pound car, but they looked at their current market. So they didn't stray too
03:43far from their market. What they wanted to do was keep the Jaguar faithful close, and so they made
03:49it full of leather. They gave it the weight of a small mining town. I mean, it drives beautifully
03:56and fast. However, two tons of fridge on the M40 can sometimes get a little bit hairy,
04:02but you forgive it all because it's solid. It has purpose. It isn't going anywhere.
04:08When you get into this car, you suddenly feel like a pools winner, not a lottery winner,
04:14a pools winner. That's for viewers that realize that, you know, old enough to do the pools.
04:20If you won the pools, you buy an I-Pace. This is absolutely a thing of beauty that
04:26I'm hoping Jaguar can learn from, and I'm really hoping that we get the next generation of
04:34electric vehicles from Jaguar because I believe Jaguar Land Rover have aspirations to electrify
04:41and blow the market apart. And these are British made vehicles. This is made in Coventry.
04:46Because it would be such a shame, you know. They make such nice cars, so different compared
04:50to Tesla, as I was saying. But I don't think the next generation of car drivers want this.
04:59You could go for a Tesla Model 3 or Tesla Model Y, for example. You can compare it to this. It
05:05starts brand new at around 50 grand. It has more range. It charges faster. It has a better battery.
05:11The performance is probably faster. It is faster, the performance, you know.
05:15I think that's what they want. I don't know how they're going to survive anymore with this
05:19interior. And at the moment, it's brilliant because people like yourselves. You like a
05:23classic-y car. I do. I mean, this is an E-type for my generation. And you understand the generation,
05:28the history of Jaguar. I don't really. I know my nan used to work there. My granddad used to work
05:33there. But that's fading away. And I don't think anybody in my age knows the history of Jaguar,
05:39really. But everyone knows the history of Tesla. Everybody knows Elon Musk. And I think that's
05:43where a lot of the automotive makers will flutter away because they're not appealing to the younger
05:51market anymore. Does the Jaguar play Netflix? Does it fart? Does it play games? Does it have
05:57decent self-driving? It doesn't fart, but you can break wind. And I can assure you, my 54 years,
06:04I've broken wind. I don't need a machine to do that. However, we have something that no one else
06:10has and nothing else provides. And that is a sense of purpose and history. I'm hoping that we can
06:16show you what this car does on the road. Today is akin to probably one of the worst-looking days
06:23in January you've ever seen. And we're nearing Blue Monday, which apparently is the most depressing day
06:28of the year, unfortunately. However, this should brighten up your January. This should brighten
06:34up most of your year. Will I see you sitting in the car on Blue January? Will I drive past and
06:38you're just sat there with your laptop? Absolutely. Your music blasting on your beautiful speakers.
06:43What speakers is this? This is a Meridian system. It's yours, Meridian? Yeah. So it is phenomenal
06:49sound. You feel like you're at a concert, albeit Phil Collins. Too old for me. Too old for me.
06:55So here is where the magic happens.
07:02Normally, you'd expect to see in a Jaguar, you'd expect to see a V8 sat there purring away.
07:07That is what gets you 260 miles on a sunny day and about 230 on a day like today in January.
07:17So that's it. You've got to keep that topped up. Screen washer goes through that like something
07:22through a goose. And also the coolants, it has two different coolers. So making sure those are
07:32topped up is probably the most essential thing for this ownership. And I found out to my cost,
07:36having delivered mine in the height of summer two years ago. Keep it cool and it keep you cool.
07:42So at home on a home charger, to charge my car, it's 5p a kilowatt in a four hour window overnight.
07:48So it's pennies to charge the car. So you've got to work out. So this car has a 78 kilowatt hour
07:53battery pack. It does. Give or take. Yeah. Five times 78. So it's about 350. So yeah, you're
08:02looking at, to get this to 80% is about 40, 45 minutes. To get it to 380, you're looking at
08:1040, 45 minutes. To get it to full charge at a service station may cost you at the moment,
08:17depending where you go, but it may cost you £25 to get it up to a full charge.
08:22But that's the, I often see in like the Sun newspaper or a newspaper, oh, it's costing £45
08:27to charge a car. Yes. If you're going to these expensive service stations to charge a car all
08:32the time, if you can charge at home, like if you have an I-Pace, it's very likely you're going to
08:37charge at home, I would say. I charge mine at home. That's it. You get your home charger
08:41installed. You plug it in. When you go to sleep, you wake up, it's fully charged and it costs a
08:45couple of quid. You know, you get put onto an energy tariff that specialises in electric vehicles
08:51overnight to keep your energy prices down. And then maybe once a month, when you go that, when
08:56you go on that really long journey and you have to charge whilst you're out on the road, yeah,
09:00you might pay a lot more because it's convenient. It's faster. And you know, there's no price cap at
09:05the moment on public charging. So you will pay that 20 quid, you will pay that 30 quid,
09:10but that's rarely in most cases. So we've covered my car. This is a personal passion of mine.
09:17Obviously episodes to come, we'll be looking at a wide variety of cars, but I'm personally
09:22invested in this vehicle. It has delivered something very special and unique for me,
09:27but I can see you have opposing opinions Harrison. I think the car that we're about to review next,
09:32check out the next video, is the most exciting car in the electric, at the moment on the roads,
09:38the most exciting electric car on the roads today. It's 25 grand. It has a long range.
09:44It's available for the masses and you can get them today, delivered today. And that's the biggest
09:49thing at the moment with electric cars. I love the eye pace. I love how it drives.
09:55I don't see the future for it. There's no future for me. So taxi for Murray.
10:02Thank you very much.
10:17And this to me is excitement on four wheels. I love the fact that they've taken the
10:24Volkswagen policy of a car for the masses and transported it via China into something which
10:31is palatable, fast, enjoyable. It hugs the road. I'm trying to find a bad thing about it.
10:38When I first got in it, because it's kind of a squarish wheel,
10:42I was, I do a lot of this when I'm driving, spinning it out of a car park, thinking I'm in Formula One.
