Notre Dame Swimming Team's Gambling Scandal Uncovered

00:00We've got another crazy sports betting story.
00:05This one, uh, you know, really is, by the way, I should say, great job investigating
00:10by Sports Illustrated to have this kind of detail revealed, albeit again, allegations
00:16at this point before truth.
00:18Want to mention that, but let's bring in Matthew Waters to talk about this Notre Dame sports
00:24book for swimming stories.
00:26Now, Matt, I did this in the open and discussed it a little bit, just how crazy it seems that
00:34the swimming team at Notre Dame could concoct this idea to open up a sports book for their
00:39own swimmers, I'm guessing, for their own team, I'm guessing.
00:43And it also remains to be seen if anybody on the outside was really betting on this
00:48stuff too.
00:49I mean, the layers of this story, I think we've only scratched the surface on.
00:52Yeah, Craig, like you said, great reporting.
00:55It was such an interesting read because we have had, obviously, gambling issues at the
01:00amateur professional level, but this one is different, right?
01:04I mean, this is just, um, you could frame it a couple of different ways.
01:08You could frame it the way that it's being framed, that it's a gambling violation and
01:13you can't be doing this.
01:14You can also frame it as, hey, there's a bunch of guys in the locker room having some fun.
01:18And maybe you could even say that we're trying to motivate each other with the lines they
01:21were trying to set with the races, right?
01:24But, yeah, still goes against those rules, doesn't it, Craig?
01:28And that's what the release from Notre Dame said.
01:31It said, you know, we looked into this and it was deeper than we even thought it could
01:35be.
01:36And yeah, it goes against the rules and we're going to suspend them for at least a year.
01:40And, you know, it is good to see that teams are taking this kind of thing seriously.
01:46Obviously, we have seen what can happen when they don't.
01:49We've had, in a couple of states, some pretty big issues opening up where it seems like
01:54maybe if somebody was paying attention, it would have stopped a little earlier.
01:59But this is a really interesting one.
02:01And you wonder, you know, well, if the Notre Dame men's swimming team had an internal pool,
02:08let's call it that way, an internal pool going with bets, who else might have that, right?
02:13Is this something that happens in every locker room?
02:17I mean, obviously, there's a difference between, you know, two buddies sitting in the dugout,
02:22comes up for him to hit the on-deck circle and looking at him saying, you know, 10 bucks,
02:26you won't smack it out, compared to actually setting betting lines and taking over-unders
02:31and all that kind of stuff.
02:35Really wild story.
02:37Interested to see what more can come out of it.
02:39And like you said, the different way that the details fall on this, Craig, can lead
02:43us in a couple of different directions.
02:45But what we do know right now is that the team will be suspended at least a year.
02:50And you have to figure that Notre Dame is going to be taking things a little more seriously
02:56on campus when it comes to watching out for gambling.
