00:00Ten years and $21 billion later, the newest addition to Sydney's rail network is ready
00:07to roll.
00:08This is a big change to the way our city moves.
00:11Our city has not seen a change this big since the opening of the harbour bridge.
00:16The city metro was initially set to open two weeks ago, but was delayed after failing to
00:21meet safety regulations.
00:22Now the government has announced the service will be open to passengers from Monday morning.
00:27We're at the end of over 15 months of testing.
00:30We've done over 13,000 test runs of trains.
00:33The system is working.
00:35The system is working exactly as it should.
00:37The new M1 is an extension of the existing metro line and runs from Chatswood in Sydney's
00:41north through the CBD to Sydenham in the inner west.
00:45Once open, commuters will be able to travel from Victoria Cross Station to Barangaroo
00:49in three minutes, Sydenham to Chatswood in 22 minutes and Barangaroo to Talawong in 46.
00:56From 4.38 on Monday morning, trains will run between Sydenham and Talawong once every
01:01four minutes.
01:02Now the government says the new service is capable of carrying more passengers between
01:06the Sydney CBD and North Sydney during peak hour than the harbour tunnel and the Sydney
01:11Harbour Bridge combined.
01:13The opening of the city metro means testing for the south west metro is imminent.
01:18Existing train services between Sydenham and Bankstown will soon be replaced by buses for
01:22about a year.
01:24Which will of course be a difficult and inconvenient period for people in the inner west and Canterbury
01:30Bankstown.
01:31I know people have been waiting but come Monday we'll turn the page on a new chapter for transporting
01:37the city.
01:38Just three days to go.
