The community of Cowra in central west New South Wales has been left reeling following the death of a local man after a tree fell on his car during a powerful storm.

00:00An elderly man has died after a tree hit his vehicle in the New South Wales Central West
00:07yesterday afternoon.
00:09Emergency services were called to Lachlan Valley Way near Cowra just before 4pm where
00:14they found a man had died at the scene.
00:17He is yet to be formally identified, however New South Wales Police believe he is aged
00:22in his 80s.
00:24An investigation has been launched into the circumstances surrounding the incident that
00:28has left the Cowra community shocked.
00:31The consequences for the town are not just the death of somebody but also the damage
00:35that's been done.
00:36There are still villages around our shire that haven't got power as yet and that impacts
00:41our ability to supply water.
00:42We need power to pump the water.
00:43Elsewhere in the Central West a house has burnt to the ground in Mudgee after a power pole
00:49hit the property.
00:50Crews were able to extinguish the blaze by around midnight and thankfully no one was
00:55home at the time of the fire and no injuries have been reported.
00:59This all occurred as a storm front that battered New South Wales moved through the state's
01:03west before hitting the coast.
01:06It saw the state emergency service respond to more than 2,200 call outs and left more
01:11than 140,000 people without power at some point over the past 24 hours.
