The mother of a 10-year-old girl has been charged with her daughter's murder on the Gold Coast. 46-year-old Ying Ying Xu was arrested shortly after the girl's father called triple-zero from the family's Carrara home. The event has shocked the community, with senior police and seasoned first responders describing the scene as ‘incredibly confronting’. A police investigation is ongoing.

00:43It was such a sweet little girl too, never ever heard a boo out of her, just always laughing
00:48and playing and running up and down the street and you'd see her walk home with her little
00:52backpack and just think that she's not around anymore, it's just heartbreaking.
00:58Her school, Emanuel College, says she had previously been awarded a medal for reading
01:03and her death was devastating and distressing.
01:07Our prayers are with the family, friends, all affected by the loss of this beloved child

01:14Yingying Xu wasn't in court when the matter was mentioned.
01:18A police prosecutor had applied to have her name and the details of the case suppressed
01:23but that was later withdrawn.
01:26Detectives are piecing together what happened in the moments prior to the young girl's death.
