00:00Assalam-o-Alaikum, I am Maryam Aiman and you are watching Top Stories.
00:14What will be the meaning of politics in sports ahead of Arshad Nadeem's journey in Pakistan's
00:18athletics?
00:19We will talk about this in the first segment of the program.
00:22After that, the final option is to follow the Supreme Court's decision.
00:26Today, Justice Mansoor Ali Shah spoke in the second segment of the program.
00:29In the end, we will talk about the Supreme Court's decision.
00:33Since the news is very good, Pakistan gets very little good news.
00:37That's why in the beginning of the program, we will talk about Arshad Nadeem again.
00:4140 years later, Pakistan's national anthem is played in the Olympic Stadium.
00:46Tomorrow, all Pakistanis will be overjoyed to see this moment and will have forgotten
00:51their sorrows for a while.
00:53Arshad Nadeem is a great player.
00:56When he was asked who he thought was his competition, he said that he only competes
01:01with himself.
01:27Arshad Nadeem has competed with himself.
01:31But today, a very great column has been written by Usman Sami Uddin.
01:35And I would like to read one excerpt from it.
01:37He has written that when Arshad Nadeem is running, he only competes with himself.
01:42But at the same time, he is also fighting against many other factors.
01:46He is fighting against the indifference of this nation.
01:49He is fighting against the history of a country with less activity in sports.
01:53Arshad Nadeem is fighting against the deteriorating tradition of sports.
01:57He is fighting against the lack of facilities.
02:00He is fighting against the lack of funds and the poorly functioning sports organizations.
02:05Arshad Nadeem is fighting against a legacy that is not yet present in this field.
02:10Along with this, he is fighting against all those forces that are hindering the creation
02:15of such a legacy.
02:18All the sports associations in Pakistan are a very lucrative business.
02:23If there is a retired person, a government official, or if someone wants to be politically
02:27privileged, they can fit him into a sports association.
02:30Let me quickly show you who is running various sports associations in Pakistan.
02:34President of Pakistan Hockey Federation, Shehla Raza Sahiba, who is a politician.
02:39Abid Qadri Gilani is a former government official.
02:42He was made President of the Pakistan Olympic Association.
02:45President of Pakistan Basketball Federation, he is a former government official.
02:48President of Pakistan Squash Federation, he is an Air Chief.
02:52President of Pakistan Football Federation, he is a former rugby player.
02:56Issam-ul-Haq Qureshi is a former tennis player.
02:58Thank God he has made him President of Pakistan Tennis Federation.
03:01Wajid Ali Chaudhry is a former athlete.
03:03He has been made President of Pakistan Badminton Federation.
03:06He is a former bureaucrat.
03:08He has been made President of Pakistan Volleyball Federation.
03:10President of Pakistan Bodybuilding Federation, he is a former National Coordinator, NECTA.
03:15So, we have seen that very few qualified athletes have been made President of Pakistan.
03:20Most of the time, they are in a political position.
03:23The PMLN and all the politicians themselves confirm that they are in a political position.
03:30Let me show you who are the leaders of the sports federations all over the world.
03:35PT Usha is a former Olympian of the Indian Olympic Association.
03:40Dilip Turki is a former hockey player of the Hockey Federation.
03:45President of the Chinese Olympic Association, he is a former sports officer.
03:49Apart from this, he is also a sports graduate.
03:51President of the Korean Olympic Committee, he is a former sports administrator.
03:54President of the Australian Olympic Committee, he is also a sports administrator.
03:57In Japan, he is a former Olympian athlete.
03:59Apart from this, we have seen that he is a former sports administrator in America.
04:03So, there are professionals there who understand their work, unlike Pakistan.
04:08And these are the government institutions of Pakistan.
04:11What are the universities and educational institutions of Pakistan doing?
04:15Because if you look at the stats, how many students study in universities all over the world,
04:21they come and compete in the Olympics.
04:24Take the example of America.
04:25In the universities of America, in the Paris Olympics in 2024,
04:29592 athletes from all over America participated.
04:32Out of which, every third athlete is representing a college or university.
04:3737 students from Stanford, 33 students from California University, 28 students from Washington University.
04:45So, these universities are playing their role.
04:48If 13 students were coming from Harvard University,
04:51then there is a possibility of students and Olympians coming from universities in Pakistan.
04:57In the first segment of the program, we have Usman Samiuddin and Vikrant Gupta with us.
05:02Both of them are renowned journalists who have knowledge about sports and sports.
05:08Today, we will take advantage of this in the first segment of the program.
05:11Usman has also written a great article on Arshad Nadeem.
05:16And in his article, Usman said that this is possibly the greatest sporting achievement of Pakistan.
05:24I ask him, why do people think that Arshad Nadeem's performance,
05:30what do you think, is possibly one of the greatest sporting achievements of our nation in the last 75 years?
05:36Thank you, Maria, first for the kind words.
05:39Some people will always say that you are saying this after a day.
05:45Obviously, at that moment, when everyone is euphoric and in a celebratory mood,
05:52such things are said.
05:54But if you really think about this achievement,
05:56I know that Jahangir Khan, you leave cricket aside,
05:59Jahangir Khan has been a sporting personality of Pakistan.
06:03He played 555 matches undefeated for 5-5.5 years.
06:08But my argument is that when Jahangir Khan came in 1980,
06:13when the breakthrough happened,
06:15he was coming in a sport in which Pakistan's legacy was already established.
06:19He had a lot of infrastructure, coaching advice, people around him who could help him.
06:32And there was a history of Pakistan.
06:34He had seen that Pakistan's players had won before the British Open, World Open.
06:39Arshad Nadeem has come in a blank space.
06:43Athletes have been there before Pakistan, obviously.
06:47He has also competed.
06:48But at this level, the level at which Arshad Nadeem has taken his performance,
06:52Pakistan has never had anyone at that level in athletics.
06:55He is literally the starting point of what we are talking about.
06:59If we want to create the legacy of athletics in Pakistan, he is the starting point.
07:03So before this, no one had come.
07:05And then apart from that, the hurdles that he has overcome just to get to the Olympics,
07:12just to get to a level that he can qualify for the Olympics,
07:15and then give such a performance in the Olympics,
07:17those obstacles come on cricketers, on hockey players, on squash players,
07:23but they always have an infrastructure and a community that helps them.
07:28He has come through a non-existent community.
07:31No one, no one, Javelin, very few people in Pakistan participate in Javelin.
07:36So where he has come from and the hurdles he has overcome,
07:40I think in that context, and then the actual performance,
07:44he has bettered the Olympic record twice in two of his attempts.
07:47That is a very rare achievement anywhere.
07:50Whether he is a Pakistani athlete or a U.S. athlete,
07:53to better the Olympic record twice in your six throws is a phenomenal achievement.
07:58So if you look at all these things together, Maria,
08:01I just feel like I will say the same next week,
08:04I will say the same two years later and ten years later,
08:06that there has been no greater achievement of Pakistan in sports than this.
08:09Right. Let's also include Vikrant in the conversation.
08:11Vikrant, thank you for taking the time.
08:13Wherever we talk about Arshad Adeem in Pakistan,
08:15we also talk about Neeraj Chopra and his friendship,
08:18his camaraderie and a healthy competition.
08:21I think in the sporting history, a separate chapter should be written on this.
08:26Why is this rivalry different, Vikrant?
08:29Because in cricket, we see that the passion and body language changes.
08:34The attitude of the most intelligent people changes.
08:39But when we saw Neeraj and Arshad performing together,
08:43the level of healthy competition we are seeing,
08:46why does this rivalry seem different to us?
08:50Thank you very much, Maria and brother Usman.
08:53See, we see this rivalry because it is healthy and competitive.
08:58Because this rivalry has now started.
09:01Even in cricket, off the field, everyone is friends.
09:04Usman has covered a lot of tournaments.
09:06He would also know that in the evening,
09:08he used to eat with Indian and Pakistani players.
09:12But what happened is that the audience is passionate in the field.
09:15The way your crowd shouts, you don't want to lose.
09:19So in javelin, I think that thing will come.
09:22Even that day when this final was going on,
09:25I was seeing that Arshad Nadeem's attention was on Neeraj.
09:29And Neeraj's attention was on Arshad.
09:32But at that time, both of them would not want
09:34that the other is better than them.
09:36So there is friendship.
09:38But I think that there is a sign of a sporting country
09:41that that friendship, I will not say rivalry,
09:45but it should be taken in that competitive spirit.
09:48And as you have talked about Arshad,
09:50that he came without a system.
09:52I was listening to his stories, reading them.
09:54I am still shocked.
09:56Look at his background.
09:58What is sport?
10:00Sport is typically played in India, Pakistan, Asia,
10:03by the middle class or the poor.
10:05Because the rich can't go to Mercedes
10:08and play cricket or any other sport.
10:10Those kids go, they like it, and then they leave it.
10:13So in the poor, there is a different hunger.
10:15In the middle class, there is a different hunger.
10:17Then they also compromise on studies.
10:19They say, play all my life.
10:21But I am surprised that Arshad Nadeem,
10:23I am not saying that he came from somewhere at night and won.
10:26But he scored 92.97 on that night.
10:29That was the difference between the earth and the sky.
10:32That is, in the gold medal,
10:34the distance of 3-4 meters was that of the earth and the sky.
10:39So I was a little surprised to read that
10:41in Pakistan, the system is still not supporting him in that way.
10:45In the coming time, you will see that his rivalry will be cut through.
10:48Arshad Nadeem will win one day.
10:50Maybe the next day, Neeraj Chopra will win one day.
10:53But happiness, I think, happened in Pakistan
10:57when Neeraj Chopra got gold.
10:59And genuinely, I saw, people were very happy.
11:01Neeraj Chopra also got that respect.
11:04And today, if Arshad Nadeem wins,
11:06then there will be a little sadness in India.
11:08That happens when the second time comes, that gold is out of hand.
11:10But the silver medal,
11:12and I think, who are you, Maria, who are you talking about, Usman?
11:15These are the parents of both of them, who said the best.
11:18They said, Nadeem's father said,
11:23he is also my son.
11:25The silver is also of my son.
11:27Here, Neeraj Chopra's mother also said,
11:30the one who won gold is also my son.
11:32I don't think there can be a bigger thing than this.
11:34We talk a lot.
11:35This game unites.
11:37There is diplomacy.
11:38But, Maria, let me tell you, all that is hypocrisy.
11:40We do all that for the sake of talking.
11:42The real thing, the real thing,
11:44was said by their parents.
11:46Yes, absolutely.
11:47What you are saying,
11:48one more thing,
11:49because it is common in Pakistan and India,
11:50that we are a cricketing nation.
11:52And, Usman, we have seen for cricket,
11:54people wake up at 3 in the morning,
11:55they can sit at 1.30 in the night.
11:57This is the first time,
11:58that people were sitting in an area of 1 billion, 1.25 billion,
12:01and watching a javelin match,
12:03till late at night.
12:05Obviously, this is also a healthy indicator,
12:08but the money we invest in cricket,
12:11we don't invest that much money in other games,
12:13because there is no return.
12:15You have to invest a lot of money in it,
12:17its return has to come after a long time.
12:19Now, do you think,
12:21we are going in that direction,
12:23that maybe other sports too,
12:25will start getting a little lift, Usman?
12:29I hope,
12:30this will remain,
12:31the world is based on hope,
12:32you know this, Maria.
12:33The hope will remain,
12:34that now people,
12:35you know, we say,
12:36that we invest a lot of money,
12:38and when we compare it with cricket,
12:40cricket is not giving anyone the right to take money.
12:43The money that comes in cricket,
12:44comes from cricket itself.
12:45That means,
12:46the PCB,
12:47doesn't run on government money,
12:49it doesn't run on taxpayer money,
12:51cricket PCB makes its own money,
12:53and invests that money in cricket.
12:55So, it is not giving anyone the right.
12:57What we say,
12:58that money,
12:59doesn't come in other sports,
13:00that,
13:01is a problem of federations,
13:03the institutions in Pakistan,
13:04the way they run,
13:05you also know,
13:06how many problems there are,
13:08in how many institutions in Pakistan,
13:10whether it is the Olympics Federation,
13:11Football Federation,
13:12Athletics Federation,
13:13there are fights going on in all of them,
13:14there is a separate body.
13:16The money comes from the corporate sector.
13:18In this,
13:19I will specifically point out,
13:21that the corporate sector,
13:22for the last,
13:23I will say,
13:2440 years,
13:25at least since the 70s,
13:26they have only seen their money,
13:28that we will invest in cricket.
13:29In cricket,
13:30obviously,
13:31there are eyeballs,
13:32you have been successful,
13:33you have been stars,
13:34but,
13:35if someone wants to take the lead,
13:36if someone wants to invest,
13:38then that money should also come from the corporate sector,
13:40and,
13:41and,
13:42obviously,
13:43today,
13:44yesterday,
13:45day before yesterday,
13:46everyone has come out,
13:47that we also gave this money,
13:48we also gave that money,
13:49I have seen a few documents today,
13:51that the government,
13:52is providing so much money to Arshad Nadeem,
13:54the government has given Arshad Nadeem,
13:56in this day and age,
13:57in the last 5 years,
13:58almost every year,
13:5940 lakh rupees,
14:00that's including his medical expenses,
14:03he has undergone 2-3 surgeries,
14:0440 lakh is nothing,
14:06as you and I know,
14:07to make a world-class athlete,
14:0940 lakh,
14:10doesn't go anywhere,
14:11it doesn't go anywhere,
14:12because,
14:13and on top of that,
14:14the pandemic of 2 years,
14:15because of the Covid pandemic,
14:16he didn't get any money,
14:17so, now,
14:18I know,
14:19a lot of people want to claim credit,
14:20yesterday,
14:21the Prime Minister's video came out,
14:22that,
14:23you know,
14:24your vision,
14:25no,
14:26only and only,
14:27Arshad Nadeem,
14:28his coach,
14:29his family's vision,
14:30no one else's vision,
14:31the hard work,
14:32is only and only his,
14:33the little money you have given,
14:34celebrate it,
14:35bro,
14:36this is your duty,
14:37as a federation,
14:38it is your duty,
14:39to give money to your athletes,
14:40and give them financial security,
14:41you haven't done anything big,
14:42by giving them money,
14:43so,
14:44corporate sector,
14:45federations,
14:46it is their responsibility,
14:47that now,
14:48you start investing money,
14:49and invest properly,
14:50don't invest in fights,
14:51don't lose your money,
14:52in corruption,
14:53invest properly,
14:54and from there,
14:55your athletes will be created,
14:56Vikrant,
14:57is the situation in India,
14:58better than this,
14:59because,
15:00we have seen,
15:01Neeraj Chopra's video,
