Giant panda enclosure opened in California with international ceremony

There was a show of unity between the US and China on Aug. 8, 2024 as San Diego Zoo officially opened its new panda enclosure to the public, where people can finally see Yun Chuan and Xin Bao, a pair of Chinese giant pandas that were the first to enter the United States in 21 years. Yun Chuan, a five-year-old male is easily recognized by his long, slightly pointed nose, while Xin Bao is a four-year-old female with big fluffy ears whose name means a 'precious treasure of prosperity and abundance.' The zoo is working closely with Chinese experts to aid in the adaptation period and understanding of the needs of the two pandas.

00:15On behalf of San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance, thank you for joining us for this historic day.
00:21Actually, this was a good one.
00:23Yesterday, when we had a chance to get a sneak peek, it was a sneak peek.
00:28For the most part, Ned and I are our panda pair here.
00:33They're kept separate for now.
00:35That, of course, could potentially change.
00:37We'll have to check in with the zoo representative to see if that is something that they may be.
00:41There was also some time where we did not have any pandas here during over the pandemic years, 2019 on.

01:30The arrival of Yunchuan and Xinbao as we celebrate the 45th anniversary of our diplomatic ties has sent a clear and important message.
01:41China-U.S. cooperation on panda conservation will not cease.
01:47Our people-to-people exchanges and subnational cooperation will not stop.
01:53And once opened, the door of China-U.S. friendship will not be shut again.

02:31It's about celebrating our common humanity.
02:34It's about celebrating the things that bind us together.
02:37We're living in a world the last number of years full of stress and anxiety, full of division,
02:43where people are exploiting our differences and not focusing on the things that bind us together.
02:49And so for me, this spirit, the pride that is associated with this opening today,
02:57with the experience that so many will have that we just had at Panda Ridge, is about a deeper meaning.
