00:00:00The things that happen to me, it's not normal life that, did that happen?
00:00:20Did it really happen?
00:00:21We're looking at a superstar!
00:00:23We're looking at a superstar!
00:00:25The last word from our hero.
00:00:27Manchester, England!
00:00:30He is the champion of the world!
00:00:35I come from the council estate.
00:00:38That's end of the rainbow fairytale stuff.
00:00:44You wish it could last forever.
00:00:47But, sooner or later it fucking bursts.
00:00:53Tomorrow night, Ricky Hatton,
00:00:55going to be crowned the greatest fighter walking the planet.
00:01:00A lot of people don't view Ricky as a person.
00:01:04They view him as an asset.
00:01:10The hero and the villain in Richard's story is Richard.
00:01:17He could put the mask on and be this character
00:01:20because he thought that's what people wanted.
00:01:27His dad says defeats in the ring have driven his son into depression.
00:01:36He was destined to have an happy ending.
00:01:40But, it didn't turn out that way.
00:01:44Wake up!
00:01:50RICKY HATTON
00:01:52RICKY HATTON
00:01:54RICKY HATTON
00:02:21They always say to me, how would you like to be remembered?
00:02:26It's hard to answer that, really.
00:02:33I was a world champion four times over.
00:02:40But, I consider myself a failure.
00:02:45It wasn't supposed to end this way.
00:02:51Ladies and gentlemen, Ricky Behemoth Hatton!
00:03:05Thank you.
00:03:06Fantastic, wonderful reception.
00:03:11I don't do many dinners this local, obviously.
00:03:15I'm a local lad.
00:03:16It's great I'm here to tell you about my life and my boxing career.
00:03:21I was born on a beautiful local council estate called Hattersley.
00:03:27Don't worry, lads, I'll put my foot down.
00:03:30I'll try and hurry up because I know you've all got your fucking tags on.
00:03:47How old would he have been on there? That's his school photograph.
00:03:51He looked like Bart Simpson.
00:03:53Don't you think? Look at his hair.
00:03:55His hair was all spiked, all spiked.
00:03:57You couldn't get it to lie down, could you?
00:03:59I don't know what that is.
00:04:01That's the card that we sent him the first time he ever fought for England.
00:04:05Dear Richard and all good wishes, hope you do the business.
00:04:09Love, Mum and Dad and Matthew.
00:04:17When Richard was actually born,
00:04:20he was nine pound eight,
00:04:24first child and forceps delivery,
00:04:29which consequently gave him two little bruises there.
00:04:34And they said, you've given birth to a right bruiser.
00:04:39He looked as if he could be a boxer.
00:04:41And how weird is that?
00:04:43And he had very hairy arms, just like that.
00:04:46I thought she'd give birth to a orangutan when I saw him the first time.
00:04:53He was good as a youngster on the estate.
00:04:56Everyone was mates, everyone knew everybody.
00:05:02I mean, I still live five minutes from where I was born, honestly.
00:05:07Everybody loved the Attons, how they lived their life and stuff.
00:05:10He was a good footballer as well, you know.
00:05:13We used to organise football tournaments, yeah?
00:05:16And if you didn't have Rick on your side,
00:05:18your ankles would be black and blue.
00:05:20Yeah, yeah.
00:05:22I'm fucking telling you.
00:05:24You'd tackle a 60-year-old kid and he'd fucking knock him six foot in the air.
00:05:27Like a somersault job.
00:05:29Because he was strong as an ox for his age.
00:05:31You didn't pick him on your team, you fucked.
00:05:35It's madness to think, one day, me dad, you know, just said,
00:05:38Rick, why don't you go over to the boxing club?
00:05:42Give it a go, see how it is.
00:05:46So I got in the ring and had a bit of a spar with this kid.
00:05:49I can't remember who it was, but he was a lot more experienced than me.
00:05:52And he went, dink, and he hit me.
00:05:54And I thought, ooh, you dickhead.
00:05:57Oh, you know, he wound me up.
00:06:00And then I'd come, like, it took me two, three, four times to come.
00:06:03And then I started getting the better of him.
00:06:05And when I got the better of him, it's like I felt ten feet taller.
00:06:08I thought, oh, my God.
00:06:10About three weeks ago, he was knocking lumps out of me.
00:06:13Look at it now.
00:06:15I was hooked then.
00:06:17I was hooked on the sport.
00:06:19Contestant number eight, in the blue corner, Richard Patton.
00:06:24Contestant number eight, in the blue corner, Richard Patton.
00:06:37I was worried.
00:06:42I can't imagine a mum having a young baby and a toddler,
00:06:45thinking, oh, well, I want him to be a boxer.
00:06:48Let's hear it for the Scotland contest.
00:06:50The winner, Patton, in the blue corner.
00:06:56Chris, we thought, well, just a bit of a...
00:06:59What's the word? Fast.
00:07:00It's a bit of a phase.
00:07:05But I could see he was...
00:07:08He was good.
00:07:13We supported him down in the pub we used to own.
00:07:19We even had a little gym with a bag and a speedball
00:07:22put down in the cellar.
00:07:26You'd be upstairs in a pub and you'd just hear,
00:07:28bang, bang, and what's that noise?
00:07:30Ricky downstairs banging the bags.
00:07:34Come on, Rick.
00:07:37The thing about boxing, ultimately, your job is, you know,
00:07:41is to knock your opponent out, is to hurt your opponent.
00:07:45But, I mean, it's very addictive.
00:07:53And I don't know whether I was always trying to use the boxing
00:07:56to try and disguise the weaknesses I had in my head.
00:08:05It gave me such confidence.
00:08:14When I was at school, I used to say to the teachers,
00:08:16no, I'm going to be a world champion, me.
00:08:18You know what I mean? I don't...
00:08:20Well, you're all really, all right, no problem,
00:08:22we're a nursery, you're in detention, you little shit.
00:08:26But when I left school, I knew that, what, it's a gold professional.
00:08:31I think it's because Manchester was at a stage
00:08:34where it was the capital of British boxing.
00:08:39Hey, you, up in the sky...
00:08:43At the heart of a rejuvenation in boxing in the city of Manchester.
00:08:51Boxing's all about romance.
00:08:54Because every single week, there's a fairytale.
00:08:58The kid with no chance gets somewhere against the odds.
00:09:02In the 90s, some really good fighters were coming up from the Phoenix gym,
00:09:06just on the outskirts of Manchester.
00:09:09The best around here by far.
00:09:11We've got world-class fighters in this gym.
00:09:13Champions, you know what I mean? Champions to beat.
00:09:17That was set up by a man called Billy Graham.
00:09:20Decided to try and start a gym on my own.
00:09:22Obviously, I got no money.
00:09:24I just went for it and just got myself in a load of debt and got a gym.
00:09:27I knew Billy before I knew Ricky.
00:09:29I used to go round his house on a Saturday night for a booze-up.
00:09:34Is he on drugs?
00:09:35I could do with some.
00:09:38With his snakes and all that, he was a one-off, a complete one-off.
00:09:44No-one knew then, but eventually, Billy would become crucial to Ricky Hatton.
00:09:50Billy and Ricky might just be one of the greatest success stories
00:09:55between trainer and boxer.
00:09:58Bill and Ricky might just be one of the greatest success stories between trainer and boxer.
00:10:28But years ago, Billy instantly vanished.
00:10:34I heard all sorts of things.
00:10:35Billy was involved with a religious cult and he was talking to snakes somewhere in Georgia.
00:10:46This is what we kept hearing about Billy.
00:10:49You know, he was speaking in tongues.
00:11:18Yeah, that's my monkey.
00:11:20That was when he lived in Sulphur on the top floor of a high-rise block.
00:11:25He was absolutely fantastic.
00:11:27I gave him to a zoo, but he was living with me for quite a long time.
00:11:35Do you like animals?
00:11:38I prefer animals to people.
00:11:43It's the first time I've had to think about this for a long time.
00:11:52It's like somebody want to push out my mind.
00:11:55You know what I mean?
00:11:56And I pushed it out of my mind for years because for a few years it destroyed me.
00:12:02You understand?
00:12:06I wasn't looking for fighters, that's for sure.
00:12:09But anyway, the phone went.
00:12:11Then Ricky Hatton come down to the gym and have a workout, take a look at him like, oh,
00:12:19of course.
00:12:23First shot was how young he looked, do you know what I mean, like a little boy.
00:12:33I took him on the pads.
00:12:39I couldn't believe how strong he was.
00:12:43He was fucking stronger than what he looked, I tell you, wasn't he?
00:12:48And I thought, wow, and the hair on the back of the neck stood up, you know what I mean?
00:12:54Because that happens to me when I see something that's great, you know what I mean?
00:13:05I was nervous at first, but we sat on the step outside that Phoenix gym, and I'd have
00:13:12a cup of tea and Billy'd have a fag.
00:13:16And everything we spoke about just click, click, click, click, you know, and this, and
00:13:21what do you think about that fight, click, click, click, you know, I must have had about
00:13:24six brews and he must have had about 20 fags.
00:13:35He was loads of fun, he was dead funny.
00:13:40I was always laughing at him, he was always laughing at me.
00:13:44We was always taking the piss out of each other.
00:13:56I remember going home to my own and my missus, I said, he's the best kid I have ever seen.
00:14:05I said, he's going to be absolutely fucking fantastic.
00:14:21Billy was blown away with him.
00:14:23And Richard really, really wanted to turn pro.
00:14:27With the boxing, with Richard, it goes round about certain kids.
00:14:35And then when you get all the promoters wanting to sit down and talk to you, then you realise
00:14:43that at that moment it is becoming real.
00:14:46Karl?
00:14:47Hey Frank.
00:14:48Hello mate, sorry, I'm just in the middle of filming something.
00:14:52Yeah, what do you need?
00:14:56It's Liam Gallagher's 50th birthday tomorrow and I'd like to get the President to wish
00:15:03him happy birthday.
00:15:06Frank Warren is Britain's top boxing promoter in a big money business.
00:15:10Quite simply, promoters hire a venue, sell the tickets, pay the fighters and if there's
00:15:15anything left they make a profit.
00:15:18I think boxing is absolute entertainment and it's all down to money, it's always down
00:15:23to money.
00:15:25In order to be a professional boxer, you've got to be able to sell yourself.
00:15:33And Frank, you know, was the biggest promoter in the country.
00:15:36I'd heard about him, he was a young lad and I heard he was quite an exceptional amateur
00:15:44and I wanted to sign him.
00:15:48I was delighted because I'd gone from working for my dad in a carpet shop for like 150 quid
00:15:52a week and then there was fighting, getting a cheque for three grand, so I thought it's
00:15:56a bit more like it.
00:16:02Now a chance to show you one of the brightest young prospects in British boxing, Richard
00:16:06Hatton is his name.
00:16:08Watch out for this fellow, Richard Hatton, I think he really is one of the most exciting
00:16:13prospects we've had over the last decade.
00:16:20Ricky was made to be a professional.
00:16:22He was exciting, he let his hands go.
00:16:26He was a whirlwind.
00:16:27It's mixing up head and body, doesn't he look a business?
00:16:30Pendle him here with his body punches early, it's tremendously impressive.
00:16:34And he goes down under the onslaught.
00:16:38Ricky was amazing and a fantastic body puncher, one of the best body punchers I've ever seen.
00:16:44Just under a minute and a quarter left for him to survive in the roundup.
00:16:49And down the body punch gets down him.
00:16:53And Billy Graham, as a coach, the perfect match.
00:16:57They knew each other, they could read each other like a book.
00:17:01Billy Graham taught me, it doesn't matter whether you've ticked all the boxes, you've
00:17:04got all the abilities, there's someone out there better than you.
00:17:08So that means you've got to work harder.
00:17:11I'm improving with every training session with Billy.
00:17:13Believe me when I tell you, the best is yet to come.
00:17:16Right from day one, we was talking about undisputed and all that.
00:17:20We wasn't going to be happy with anything else.
00:17:42Very soon, he starts to create a fan base.
00:17:45Manchester, God bless, I love you.
00:17:48I think they really plug him to the fact that he's like them.
00:17:55Ricky, the hitman of Heffern.
00:18:01He's man-city through and through.
00:18:03He can drink most people under the table.
00:18:06And he can fight like fury.
00:18:08How can he fail to be a superstar?
00:18:10It's all done now.
00:18:12Nothing coming back once a round of it's done.
00:18:16It was destined to have an happy ending, to be honest with you.
00:18:21Patton does it again.
00:18:23Still unbeaten, still going places.
00:18:26A few days later.
00:18:38Hi, Isara. Where I get away parking there?
00:18:42With my disabled sticker?
00:18:44I don't know you.
00:18:46Oh, you've got a nice new car.
00:18:52I've never just done one thing.
00:18:55We were always running our own business, the pubs, and selling carpets.
00:19:02And if you wanted to succeed in business, you had to do it well.
00:19:07We were very lucky with hard work and we were quite successful at whatever we went into.
00:19:17Very, very early, I recognised the value my son was.
00:19:26Everything went through Ray Hatton.
00:19:30He was the manager.
00:19:34Everybody liked him, people were suspicious about him,
00:19:38because in boxing you're suspicious of newcomers.
00:19:43That particular time, I was new to the boxing,
00:19:47but in my eyes, I had to look at it as business.
00:19:52That he got as much as he could do to secure the future for him
00:19:58and any future family that he was having.
00:20:02Look at the camera. Campbell.
00:20:05Campbell.
00:20:06Who's that?
00:20:08Give him a smile.
00:20:10Because he had a son, Campbell.
00:20:13Campbell.
00:20:20It was a bit of a shock, to be honest, because it wasn't planned.
00:20:25And I was still only 20, 21.
00:20:29I thought, oh my God, I'm going to be a dad.
00:20:36Campbell coming into Richard's life altered his life to a certain extent,
00:20:41but it wasn't a dramatic change, because he didn't live together,
00:20:46he didn't get married, he lived with his mum.
00:20:51He was still there for him, but I think if you were to ask Richard now,
00:20:56he could have been there a little bit more.
00:21:01And I was the most on his case.
00:21:05Because if he wasn't fighting, he'd be going out drinking too much.
00:21:19The more successful it became,
00:21:22the more people were coming to see it,
00:21:26the more successful it became,
00:21:30I was always a little bit concerned that he didn't get carried away with it all.
00:21:45I got given such confidence in my ability, but it's like...
00:21:51I was so weak in other areas,
00:21:54with the lifestyle away from the gym that I had.
00:21:59I don't know whether you're putting a spotlight a little bit more
00:22:02or you're earning a few more pennies, it adds a little bit more pressure.
00:22:07The first day, training camps, we used to dread what we were going to see.
00:22:14He walked in and he's bursting out of his clothes, do you know what I mean,
00:22:19I said, you know what, you look like a fucking stand-up comedian from the beginning.
00:22:23And he said, I don't know, I don't know.
00:22:25And he said, I don't know, I don't know.
00:22:27And I said, I don't know, I don't know.
00:22:29And he said, I don't know, I don't know.
00:22:31And he said, I don't know, I don't know.
00:22:33And I said, you look like a fucking stand-up comedian from the 70s.
00:22:40Ricky Hatton was often 14 stone.
00:22:44And he fought at 10 stone.
00:22:47I said, let's get on the scale and see what we've got to do.
00:22:49He refused to get on the scales.
00:22:51So I knew that if he refused to get on the scales,
00:22:54you'd know full well what's going on there.
00:22:57Even though he'd have X amount of weeks off,
00:23:00he still never started his training on a Monday,
00:23:03because Sunday was an all-dayer.
00:23:06And he used to say to Billy,
00:23:08tell him if he's not in Monday, don't bother coming in fucking next week.
00:23:17His dad said when he comes in like that, you should murder him.
00:23:21You know, punish him, give him a really hard word.
00:23:24Punish him, give him a really hard workout and punish him and all that.
00:23:28I said, what the fuck is that going to do?
00:23:30That's just going to make him ill.
00:23:34He said strange things.
00:23:35He said, he was my best mate, he was my little brother.
00:23:40I was fucking worrying more about the massive fight to come.
00:23:55I won the British title, but since the day I started,
00:23:59I wanted to be the best in the world.
00:24:03I believed that I was going to be a world champion.
00:24:07At the time, the undisputed champion was a boxer called Costa Zou.
00:24:17Costa Zou had been a brilliant Russian champion.
00:24:20He was a mainstream star.
00:24:22He was one of the finest boxers in the world.
00:24:35He had dominated the lightweight division.
00:24:39He was the man.
00:24:50Do you fancy your chances now against the likes of Zou,
00:24:53or do you want to wait a little longer?
00:24:55I truly believe I can beat him now, yeah.
00:24:58Now?
00:24:59Yeah, I think I can beat him now, without a doubt.
00:25:05I went to Frank Warren.
00:25:08So he said, what have you got in your mind, Ricky?
00:25:11I said, what if I fight Costa Zou?
00:25:13Can you believe me, Frank, the minute you give me the nod,
00:25:15them belts are coming back to England.
00:25:17I'm telling you, I'd fight him tomorrow if I had the choice.
00:25:23Costa Zou at that time was the best in the world.
00:25:28And I didn't feel it was the right time.
00:25:33I think by that time I'd had about 38 fights.
00:25:36It's a risk.
00:25:37How many fights do you want me to have before we take these risks?
00:25:43In the end, that's a fight the fans wanted to see.
00:25:47And I'm looking him in the eye, I said,
00:25:48do you really want this fight now?
00:25:50Do you want it?
00:25:51Well, yeah, I want it, I want it, and that was it.
00:25:54Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to the press conference
00:25:57for the IBF world title that takes place in the NBN Arena in Manchester.
00:26:05I couldn't believe it.
00:26:07It was like, you know, your heart stopped a beat just for a little bit.
00:26:11Because you think, oh, shit,
00:26:14this was Costa Zou.
00:26:17Come on, Ricky!
00:26:23This is what Costa Zou's going to face.
00:26:25It's going to be some night.
00:26:29The whole of Manchester were behind me.
00:26:32Ricky! Ricky! Ricky!
00:26:34But I think there was a tension in the air.
00:26:39Who's going to win the big fight?
00:26:41Honest opinion, Costa Zou.
00:26:44Head tells me Zou.
00:26:47Heart thinks Hatton.
00:26:48I've got to go for Costa Zou.
00:26:50Believe me, get some money on that motherfucker as well.
00:27:01Your dream is to become a world champion.
00:27:04Manchester Arena, 20,000 fans at two o'clock in the morning.
00:27:11They had it at two o'clock in the morning
00:27:13to coincide with American TV and Australian TV
00:27:16so they could watch it at a decent hour.
00:27:18And all the press said to me, they said,
00:27:20Ricky, how are you going to go on fine at two in the morning?
00:27:23I said, listen, everyone in Manchester fucking bangs at two in the morning.
00:27:41Come on, Ricky!
00:27:46Come on, Ricky!
00:27:52Ladies and gentlemen,
00:27:55the time has come for the bout you've all been waiting for.
00:28:00Introducing the challenger from Manchester, England,
00:28:05Ricky, the big man, Hatton!
00:28:17I was so nervous.
00:28:20Just keep your game plan, keep your cool.
00:28:23I know it's in front of thousands of people out there.
00:28:27Keep your nerve, keep your nerve.
00:28:30I was so nervous.
00:28:32Just keep your game plan, keep your cool.
00:28:35I know it's in front of thousands of people out there.
00:28:39Keep your nerve, keep your nerve.
00:28:49I told everybody we was going to win.
00:28:53But that was bravado, you know what I mean?
00:28:56Because my ass was twitching.
00:29:00He's fought this fight a thousand times in his head.
00:29:03Can he do it for real?
00:29:17Hatton won't mind getting close.
00:29:19Brogan denies you leverage.
00:29:21And this is a very, very hard to beat fight.
00:29:27If I set a high pace the first two rounds,
00:29:31you know, I'd fold the shots,
00:29:33and sit there and nudge him a little bit,
00:29:35and then I'd punch again and then I'd grab him.
00:29:37And I think he has unsettled you a bit.
00:29:39He's on top of him.
00:29:40This is what the plan was.
00:29:42Pressure, pressure, pressure.
00:29:44I had him on the ropes, you know,
00:29:46uppercourt, you know, uppercourt.
00:29:52It's a pulsating, turbocharged atmosphere in here
00:29:55as Hatton makes the running early.
00:29:59Kostya knew he had to raise his game.
00:30:16You could feel the atmosphere change.
00:30:20He's been caught again as he comes forward.
00:30:22Another solid right, a couple of solid right.
00:30:25Signs of danger for Mickey Hatton.
00:30:29Problem is, what if all you've got is notes?
00:30:31You don't need to panic.
00:30:33If you're not quite getting through,
00:30:34it's because you've got to stay close.
00:30:37Coming towards the middle rounds,
00:30:39this is the scariest part now for both of us.
00:30:44When you've got your guy getting fucking beat up,
00:30:47he's beating someone up, he's beating him back up,
00:30:49he's beating him up again.
00:30:52Someone could get knocked out, it could be your guy.
00:30:56You're in a battle, you're in a war.
00:31:00It's fucking horrible.
00:31:03Mickey Hatton's on the ground.
00:31:05Again, he's prepared to walk through walls
00:31:08in pursuit of his dream tonight.
00:31:11He's there now, he's there now for the take.
00:31:13You can't let him fix it, he's got everything he's got.
00:31:16You've got to work your balls off now.
00:31:18This is it.
00:31:19Just keep the game going.
00:31:21I think I'll beat him.
00:31:23It's Kostya's end.
00:31:25I mean, this is a crazy piece for Ricky.
00:31:28When he got close, I just went,
00:31:30right, right, right, right, bang.
00:31:37I think the ropes actually held him up.
00:31:43Nobody had ever done this to Kostya Zhu.
00:31:49One round left.
00:31:51One round left.
00:31:54One round left.
00:32:13Billy, I said, I've got nothing left, I've got nothing left.
00:32:16And Billy said, you know, don't let me hear that,
00:32:19don't let me hear that.
00:32:20How many times did we sit on that stepping sofa
00:32:23saying we were going to be the best?
00:32:27And if you throw this away now and don't put your foot down on it,
00:32:30you'll never forgive this, you'll never forgive this.
00:32:32Come on, Ricky, this is what we've talked about.
00:32:40You could see Zhu was in quite a lot of discomfort.
00:32:45I'm looking round and I'm checking all the time.
00:32:51Let's have a look, let's have a look.
00:32:55And as I look round, I just see...
00:33:11The dream is made real!
00:33:15Ricky Hatt rocks the world with a truly stunning win!
00:33:20He is the champion of the world!
00:33:27Who would have said Ricky Hatt would force Kostya Zhu
00:33:31to quit on his stool?
00:33:38The first thing I could do was...
00:33:42The first thing I could do was hold Billy,
00:33:44because no-one thought we could do it.
00:33:46You know, Billy turned round and said,
00:33:48you've done it, you've done it, I told you, you've done it.
00:33:51And I remember saying, Billy, no, we've done it.
00:33:55I just see his face.
00:33:57The relief.
00:33:59Unbelievable!
00:34:01Destiny calling for Ricky Hatter.
00:34:04Unbelievable, that's the family!
00:34:06Look at the family, who can all now pat each other on the back.
00:34:09Look at Ricky!
00:34:12We were emotional because we were proud of him.
00:34:16But it was about him.
00:34:18It was his night.
00:34:22Manchester!
00:34:28There's only one word I could use for your support tonight,
00:34:31and that was legendary.
00:34:33God bless you all.
00:34:35God bless you all.
00:35:06BELL RINGS
00:35:10Now time's gone on and I can look back.
00:35:15I think that Rick has a real need to be loved.
00:35:23And, erm...
00:35:27Hmm.
00:35:28Not just loved, like, wanted and accepted.
00:35:35I met him at a family party, which was one of Rick's cousins.
00:35:43But, yeah, I don't think we spoke about boxing, er, at all.
00:35:48I don't think it would have come into it.
00:35:50He was trying to impress me with his dance moves more than anything.
00:35:56We had a good laugh from the first day we met.
00:35:59But I don't think she was in to the boxing.
00:36:03I bet when she went home and told her mum,
00:36:05I'm going out with a boxer, I bet her mum thought, ooh!
00:36:10But she was different.
00:36:22I remember very early on, we had a night out
00:36:26and he was surrounded by people.
00:36:31If one person noticed him, then everybody else would.
00:36:37And it was like the world was watching.
00:36:40That's what it's like when it's not here, all them lights.
00:36:46It beat in Costa Zoo.
00:36:48It was a great success story for everybody.
00:36:52The brand, the industry of Ricky Hatt and Mushroom.
00:36:56That's my mobile bag.
00:36:58LAUGHTER
00:37:01Mr Richard Hatton, for services to boxing.
00:37:06Ricky sort of made it OK to be off the council estate.
00:37:12He gave everyone a sense of belief in the self.
00:37:16Welcome, please, Ricky Hatton.
00:37:18CHEERING
00:37:24Things altered dramatically then
00:37:26because everybody wanted a part of him.
00:37:32As his father and his advisor, can it get any better?
00:37:37Yeah, I think with the way Richard is
00:37:41and the way he responds to challenges,
00:37:44I think this can be the start of an all-new era, really.
00:37:50Everything was going well,
00:37:52but we got to a situation with Frank,
00:37:55sorting out the money side of it.
00:37:58It was good money.
00:38:00But Richard was in a different position,
00:38:02he was in a different realm there.
00:38:04Do you feel crazy? You're dealing with millions of pounds.
00:38:07Yeah, it gets ridiculous.
00:38:09But you've got to realise
00:38:11what I knew it was worth.
00:38:17I was looking at what to do next,
00:38:19and then the old man, he asked about some stupid money.
00:38:23Listen, we all know you want to earn money, but I was pissed off.
00:38:26I thought, I've just done this, guided you to this,
00:38:29got you the opportunity.
00:38:31And I remember saying to his dad, he came on,
00:38:33I said, go and do what you like.
00:38:35I said, you know, fuck you, I'm done,
00:38:37because I couldn't get my head round it.
00:38:40These things happen in relationships
00:38:43that probably either party feel that
00:38:47they weren't fair because of this,
00:38:49we weren't fair because of that.
00:38:53When I first met him, he said he's dead,
00:38:55and I got on well with him, I thought he was OK.
00:38:58But he changed.
00:39:00He changed quite a bit.
00:39:05I think it was inevitable.
00:39:07My dad was the one that was looking after me and talking to Frank.
00:39:10But when you beat someone of the stature of a cost you zoo,
00:39:14it wasn't the rise I was expecting.
00:39:23There was a lot more conversations about money happening,
00:39:26and, you know, I think Ray wanted to build a bit of an empire.
00:39:31Well, a lot's been made about this, that it was all about money.
00:39:35It hasn't been all about money, even though it's a big consideration.
00:39:39At that particular time, I'm selling a diamond.
00:39:42I'm not selling a quartz.
00:39:44And not to say my son is a product,
00:39:47but technically it's the same thing.
00:39:50You're trying to do the best for that item,
00:39:55or, in this case, that person who happens to be your son.
00:40:00You're trying to safeguard your son for the rest of the life.
00:40:04So it does make you a little bit more ruthless.
00:40:09Look, most boxing promoters are fucking dogs.
00:40:12Do you know what I mean?
00:40:14Most businessmen are dogs.
00:40:17Yeah?
00:40:19But with Frank Warren, at least he was a boxing man.
00:40:27I always just say that's when, after a cost of zoo fight,
00:40:32when the lunatics finally took over the asylum.
00:40:56After the Costa Zoo fight,
00:40:58I remember somebody saying to me,
00:41:00Ricky, you've climbed Everest.
00:41:02How are you going to motivate yourself now you've climbed Everest?
00:41:08But since the first day I started...
00:41:14..I want to do what my heroes have done.
00:41:19I wanted to top the bill in Las Vegas.
00:41:29Ladies and gentlemen,
00:41:31from the MGM Grand of Las Vegas, Nevada,
00:41:36the Golden Boy, Oscar Hidalgo!
00:41:45Vegas is like the land of opportunity for boxing.
00:41:54If you're inside the ring at the MGM,
00:41:57you've made it. You're on the big stage.
00:42:02Las Vegas was the place.
00:42:06That's where the money was.
00:42:08And fighters would see, OK, the biggest fighters,
00:42:12the guys I grew up watching and idolising
00:42:16were fighting in Las Vegas.
00:42:18Wow, now I can fight in Las Vegas too.
00:42:22When Ricky Hatton beat Costa Zoo,
00:42:25he started to become a name here in America.
00:42:32As a promoter, having retired from boxing,
00:42:35we knew that we had to get our hands on Ricky Hatton.
00:42:43I met his father, Ray, and I said,
00:42:46look, why don't you sit down with Golden Boy?
00:42:49Golden Boy Promotions has promoted
00:42:51some of the greatest fighters in the history of boxing.
00:42:54And sure enough, I set up a meeting
00:42:57between Oscar and Ray Hatton.
00:43:03I said, let's try to bring Ricky Hatton over here
00:43:07to fight the biggest star at the time.
00:43:12Are you ready? Who ready?
00:43:14Because I'm ready.
00:43:16Ten years.
00:43:18Zero losses.
00:43:21Floyd Mayweather Jr. is the best boxer alive.
00:43:25My name is Floyd. My name is Floyd.
00:43:27My name is Money Mayweather.
00:43:31Floyd Mayweather became the most bankable fighter in boxing.
00:43:37And in the ring, he was also a very, very,
00:43:42In the ring, he was also a very, very, very good fighter.
00:44:01Floyd was the number one pound-for-pound king.
00:44:04When the opportunity comes, you know,
00:44:06to fight the best fighter on the planet
00:44:09in any weight division,
00:44:10jumped at the chance, you know, if I would have it.
00:44:12You know what I mean? And that's what you want to do.
00:44:15You know, to move up a weight,
00:44:16fight the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
00:44:20If I do that, no British fighter's ever achieved that.
00:44:25First to the big boxing story in Ricky Hatton's fight
00:44:28with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is on.
00:44:30Contracts have been signed for the battle of the belts.
00:44:35Floyd Mayweather was a great fight for us.
00:44:40Without talking, in multi-millions.
00:44:44Undefeated, it takes two very special fighters
00:44:48to call a fight that name.
00:44:50The biggest welterweight fight in the history of the sport.
00:44:56It was mind-blowing.
00:44:58And they got the big TV screen.
00:45:00It went, oh, Celine Dion, you know,
00:45:02and it went, oh, Tom Jones, oh,
00:45:04and then it went, Ricky Hatton.
00:45:06I said, has that just been me up there with Celine Dion?
00:45:10Are they taking the piss? You know?
00:45:18You're a pussy. You're a chump.
00:45:21Too small. You're a girl.
00:45:23I wish we was locked up together.
00:45:26You're a chump. You's a pussy.
00:45:28You know what you're going to get.
00:45:29You know what you're going to get.
00:45:30All them boys you fought was over here,
00:45:32and you're fighting the best.
00:45:33You straight up and down.
00:45:34Also, it was really, really tough, you know,
00:45:36to put up with that dickhead.
00:45:38He went, look at me, 250,000 on me pinky,
00:45:41but I'll go, you're the dick, though.
00:45:42You know?
00:45:43And then he'd go, look at the wristwatch.
00:45:45Yeah, yeah, got 300 on me watch, 300 on me wrist.
00:45:48I'd go, yeah, but you're the dick.
00:45:52Yeah, don't worry about that.
00:45:54Don't worry about that. Don't worry about that.
00:45:56It was an incredible promotional tour.
00:45:59You know, Ricky Hatton was undefeated,
00:46:02the people's champion,
00:46:04but then you have the villain.
00:46:06Then you have the guy that, in Mayweather,
00:46:09who everybody wants to see lose.
00:46:11Floyd Mayweather, welcome to the lion's den.
00:46:16I am the lion!
00:46:18I am the lion!
00:46:21It was literally like the perfect storm.
00:46:26I am the lion!
00:46:27I am the lion!
00:46:37What should have been the best times
00:46:39should have been the vaguest times.
00:46:45But that's when it stopped being fun.
00:46:49As you all know, Billy's hands are bad
00:46:51through years of abuse, Bill, aren't they?
00:46:53Yeah.
00:46:57Billy Graham was getting older.
00:47:01And Billy Graham had terrible hands
00:47:04through years and years of doing pads.
00:47:06And Billy wouldn't let anyone else do pads.
00:47:09Either side.
00:47:10Yeah, when we get there.
00:47:14That felt a bit weird about it.
00:47:16That felt a bit near the bone, that carry.
00:47:18It wasn't near the bone.
00:47:20You know.
00:47:23It's absolutely true that I was really with injuries,
00:47:26you know what I mean?
00:47:32And I could tell Ray Hatton hated me.
00:47:37You know, Ray Hatton had been trying to get rid of me.
00:47:42And we're arguing.
00:47:45At no point was Billy Graham
00:47:48thought of being pushed out or moved out.
00:47:54Billy had been struggling with his hands.
00:47:56I said, when it gets to some of the hard sessions,
00:48:00bring somebody in.
00:48:04I wanted Billy still round the camp
00:48:07because of his relationship with Richard.
00:48:11The only part I enjoyed about my job at that time
00:48:15was when we're training for a fight.
00:48:19Because then it was just kind of me and him.
00:48:24We just had to really look at each other.
00:48:28And we didn't have to say that much.
00:48:30I knew everything about what he was feeling.
00:48:33The fear and the nerves.
00:48:35Because it's something like what you've been bolted
00:48:38and working for all that time and dreaming about,
00:48:41talking about.
00:48:44Any moment now, entering the building,
00:48:47Ricky the Hitman!
00:48:55It was surreal.
00:48:57You land in Vegas and the taxi driver's always like,
00:49:01oh, you guys are coming from England.
00:49:03Do you know this guy, Ricky Hatton?
00:49:05Do you know this guy, Ricky Hatton?
00:49:07And you're like, yeah.
00:49:14What do you make of this?
00:49:15Absolutely crazy!
00:49:17Is he going to do it?
00:49:19He's going to do it!
00:49:23Once we get to Mayweather, people are remortgaging,
00:49:26they're taking bits of money out of pensions,
00:49:28they're selling their aunties, they're doing anything to get...
00:49:31Because everybody has got to be at that Mayweather fight.
00:49:38You've got 35,000 British fans there in Las Vegas.
00:49:43This is something that's never happened,
00:49:45is never likely to happen again.
00:49:47That fight was transcending life.
00:49:49Oh, Ricky Hatton!
00:49:52Oh, Ricky Hatton!
00:49:55Oh, Ricky Hatton!
00:50:01Someone shouted to me, they went,
00:50:03Rick, Rick, Rick, have you seen this? Have you seen this?
00:50:06And I just went up before we got on the stage
00:50:08and I pulled the curtain back.
00:50:11And there was fans up there with Union Jacks,
00:50:14you know what I mean, they were singing God Save The Queen.
00:50:23There was 10,000 fans there.
00:50:2610,000 fans for the weigh-in.
00:50:29From Manchester, England, Ricky Hatton.
00:50:35It made me so proud and it made me so fired up for it.
00:50:42And I stood there and I thought, if he comes forward one inch,
00:50:46you come one centimetre here, I'm not backing down.
00:51:00Get over here!
00:51:04I was sitting at the edge of the stage with Steve Lillis.
00:51:07Suddenly, Ricky is looking at Floyd,
00:51:10running his finger across his throat.
00:51:19Ricky Hatton doing the cutthroat,
00:51:21it's what you see trust talk boxers do.
00:51:23You know, man of the people, Ricky doesn't do that, he's the nice guy.
00:51:30Something bouncy turned around and looked at me,
00:51:33and I think the look might have just said it all.
00:51:35Oh, bollocks.
00:51:37He'd been sucked in.
00:51:39He'd bought into it.
00:51:44I just want you to answer me two questions.
00:51:46Who have you come to see?
00:51:48Yeah!
00:51:50Floyd?
00:51:51No!
00:51:52Me?
00:51:53Yeah!
00:51:54Who's ticking the belts?
00:51:56You!
00:51:58Let's fucking have him!
00:52:11To go to Vegas and to drive down Vegas Strip and see...
00:52:14See you, mate.
00:52:15As a grown man now, it's unbelievable, you know,
00:52:17to see a lad that he was at school with.
00:52:19You get Anjali, John Lee and...
00:52:21Sylvester Stallone.
00:52:22Oh, right, yeah.
00:52:23Fucking mental.
00:52:24Tom Jones took him for some sweet, didn't he?
00:52:26Yeah, yeah.
00:52:27You know, he stood next to him, he talked into him.
00:52:29It's not unusual.
00:52:30Oh, no!
00:52:40This is a big event, a happening, make no mistake about it.
00:52:48Denzel Washington,
00:52:50Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt.
00:52:54They're all here tonight, aren't they?
00:52:56His mum and dad are there.
00:52:58So is his girlfriend, Jennifer,
00:53:00watching, waiting nervously.
00:53:05I'd written a story in my mind,
00:53:07you know what I mean, I'm going to beat him.
00:53:09I'm going to go down as one of the best fighters of all time.
00:53:16I'm going to bring them belts back to Manchester.
00:53:19I'm going to walk in my pub on Hattersley and go,
00:53:21yeah, bang.
00:53:27I'd say to people, put your house on it.
00:53:30That's how confident I was.
00:53:40I'm terrified.
00:53:42It was so loud in there, but you could really pick out those drums.
00:53:48It was like war drums.
00:53:52And I was just thinking,
00:53:54don't do it, please don't do it.
00:54:13Here we go, at long last.
00:54:15Can Hatton apply the pressure that he's been looking for straight away?
00:54:20He looks to just show his physical strength.
00:54:25In the first few rounds, I was moving in on him quick,
00:54:28and that little dip jab, you know, that I always liked,
00:54:31you know what I mean, flowing through there, and I dipped one, bang.
00:54:35Oh, the jab knocks me with a right off balance.
00:54:38He looked troubled by that.
00:54:40It was a heck of a jab from Hatton,
00:54:42and that has sent the British fans here wild.
00:54:46Everything was sort of like going to plan.
00:54:49But I think from a very early part,
00:54:52whenever Floyd had jabbed me, I'd move in, the referee would break.
00:54:56This is what Hatton wanted to do, to wrap him up.
00:54:59Joe Cortez, the referee, is very quickly trying to stop him doing that.
00:55:03Why did the referee come in there?
00:55:06The shot went over his head.
00:55:08He's breaking the action every other second.
00:55:12It was ridiculous, it was disgusting.
00:55:15Every time he got in close, it separated him.
00:55:19He will try, Joe Cortez, to break the action.
00:55:22He should be penalised.
00:55:24It sort of broke the rhythm.
00:55:27I totally lost my composure.
00:55:30I'm running for Ricky, but the pace slows.
00:55:33This pace, look at it, he's been crossing cleanly now.
00:55:35It's when the pace slows,
00:55:37that we really have to start running for Ricky.
00:55:39It hurts me to say it, but at the moment, Mayweather's won that round too,
00:55:43and he's beginning to pull away.
00:55:48Two rounds, you can't win any rounds with him.
00:55:51It's two rounds left.
00:55:53It was chaos.
00:55:55In 42 fights, I'd never had to say to Ricky,
00:55:58they've got you a mile behind on points.
00:56:01You've got to knock him out to win.
00:56:04It's a bit of a punch.
00:56:07It's a bit of a punch.
00:56:09I've got to give it his next two rounds.
00:56:22Oh, it's going down!
00:56:24And Hatton is laid out on the floor.
00:56:27Can he get up from that?
00:56:29He's a laser, he's going to be all right.
00:56:33I'm all right, he says one bravery from Hatton,
00:56:36but maybe the end is close now.
00:56:52And the dream dies.
00:56:56I just felt embarrassed.
00:57:00I just felt I'd let so many people down.
00:57:04I was thinking, what am I going to explain to my mates,
00:57:07my family, my friends, Manchester, Hattersley?
00:57:10You know, what am I going to...?
00:57:14It was horrible. Horrible.
00:57:21We'd lost.
00:57:24For the first time.
00:57:27No matter how much you analyse it,
00:57:29you've been beating off one of the best fighters of all time.
00:57:35We thought we was going to win.
00:57:57Ladies and gentlemen, can we just have your attention, please?
00:58:00Obviously, he's very tired.
00:58:02After the fight, I was quite protective of him.
00:58:06I know how humiliated he's going to feel.
00:58:10So it was a massive fall.
00:58:13I feel a bit of a mug to be honest.
00:58:15I feel a bit of a mug to be honest.
00:58:17I feel a bit of a mug to be honest.
00:58:20I feel a bit of a mug to be honest.
00:58:23I feel a bit of a mug to be honest.
00:58:25I feel a bit of a mug to be honest because I left myself open to it.
00:58:28Physically, he had to cope with it,
00:58:31but mentally he had to cope with it.
00:58:34It was like this fake smile on his face.
00:58:37To put it bluntly, it's probably been a shit day altogether, innit?
00:58:46That first loss, it's hard to digest for anybody.
00:58:51It was tough on all of them.
00:58:53But I'll tell you from experience,
00:58:57But I'll tell you from experience,
00:58:59it's until you lose and it's just boxing
00:59:02it's until you lose and it's just boxing
00:59:04that the fingers get pointed.
00:59:06Well, you didn't do this, you didn't do that.
00:59:08Then the things start coming out.
00:59:13I was in the change room afterwards, it was bad.
00:59:16Rick come in, he just couldn't speak to anybody.
00:59:19All of a sudden, Ray comes in and absolutely goes for Billy's throat.
00:59:24All of a sudden, Ray comes in and absolutely goes for Billy's throat.
00:59:27And all he could hear was, Ray, it's your fucking fault.
00:59:30You didn't stick to the plan and then Billy said,
00:59:32it's not my fucking fault.
00:59:34He'd come out swinging, he didn't fucking do this,
00:59:36he wouldn't listen to me, blah, blah, blah.
00:59:38Ray said, it's fucking your fault, it's not his fucking fault,
00:59:41it's your fault, look at it now, look, look.
00:59:44Anyway, it was fucking really bad, really bad in the change room.
00:59:48I didn't even know that had gone on.
00:59:58I knew that Ray Hatton wanted to get rid of me.
01:00:04He thought that anybody could train Ricky by then.
01:00:15Billy was like a dad to Rick.
01:00:20They had a really unbelievably special bond.
01:00:26They'd shared something and they'd got each other
01:00:29on just a different level.
01:00:35But Ray definitely didn't think that Billy was the right person
01:00:39for the job anymore.
01:00:45Everyone did want him out.
01:00:49He had to have needles in his elbows and needles in his hands,
01:00:53you know, to get through training sessions.
01:01:00Ray turned round and said,
01:01:03if your trainer is slowing down,
01:01:06it will inevitably slow you down.
01:01:10So Ray said to Richard, what do you want to do?
01:01:14He said, I've already done it, yeah.
01:01:20He come into the office and sat down.
01:01:23I knew that that was it, you know what I mean?
01:01:26I knew that was it.
01:01:32I said, we've had such great times together.
01:01:34I said, you know, I love you, I said, you're my mate.
01:01:38He didn't have to say it.
01:01:40I mean, we spent our lives,
01:01:43the last I don't know how many years of our lives,
01:01:46looking into each other's eyes every day.
01:01:51I fucking loved him, you know what I mean?
01:02:01But what I did say,
01:02:04I just went, there's no-one,
01:02:06you've got no-one to look after you now.
01:02:21I was devastated, I was devastated when I got beat by Floyd Mayweather.
01:02:25I fell out with Billy Graham, who was my long-line trainer and friend.
01:02:31So I was down after that.
01:02:33You know, even my friends, they knew I was in a bad way,
01:02:36but the thing is, you can't, for a man, or even a lady,
01:02:40but certainly for a man, you can't go to your mates and go,
01:02:43fucking hell, mate, I'm crying every day,
01:02:45fucking please help me, because you've been...
01:02:47And it's just not what you do.
01:02:54You wake up every morning, I feel like weeks after it,
01:02:57you know, thinking, got beat, got beat, got beat.
01:03:00No more Billy.
01:03:02And the more and more I thought about it, the worse I felt.
01:03:06I was trying to deal with it on my own.
01:03:09Jennifer, at the time, she'd go, you know,
01:03:11she'd go shopping or go out or something like that,
01:03:14and I'd be sat in the house, depressed, crying and everything like that,
01:03:17and then she'd come back and I'd go,
01:03:19hey, hey, you OK, you all right, you had a good day, yeah, yeah.
01:03:22And that's what you do, you put the brave face on.
01:03:27And if I felt down, I'd just go to the pub, you know what I mean,
01:03:31and that was my sanctuary.
01:03:35There was a lot of drinking going on.
01:03:39I think in the moment, it masked, you know,
01:03:43like, probably the feelings that he was having.
01:03:48But I don't think I had any clue
01:03:52how things would spiral from there.
01:03:57LAUGHTER
01:04:01What did it feel like the first time you did drugs?
01:04:10Erm...
01:04:13The first time I took drugs, it just, erm...
01:04:16It seemed like, erm...
01:04:19..a replacement.
01:04:21I don't...
01:04:23I don't know, it's just, erm...
01:04:25If you're in a bad place, it just gives you the false reading.
01:04:30Makes you feel, you know, oh, I'm in a good place,
01:04:33when, if the truth be known, you're not in a good place.
01:04:36That's where I was, I was looking for something.
01:04:46But I kept a lot of it hidden.
01:04:51I shielded it from the people that loved me,
01:04:53cos I didn't want to admit it,
01:04:55and I didn't want to upset my family.
01:05:03You know, after the Mayweather defeat,
01:05:05that had to put a lot of questions in his mind.
01:05:10So there was a process of getting some wins back.
01:05:15He went to Man City Stadium.
01:05:19And Ray said,
01:05:20we've sold 50-something thousand tickets in, like, 24 hours or 48 hours.
01:05:25And it's like, wow, that just shows
01:05:29that he was still big with his army of fans.
01:05:38I think he was trying to throw himself into something,
01:05:41because inside he was hurting so much.
01:05:44It was really hurt, and he was struggling.
01:05:50After that, we discussed, Ray and I,
01:05:52what do you think should be next?
01:05:54I think I said, Ray, you know,
01:05:56if Ricky could beat Manny Pacquiao,
01:06:00in the eyes of all his fans, in the eyes of many,
01:06:04it sort of erases the defeat.
01:06:08Manny Pacquiao was a phenomenon in the sport.
01:06:21This is Ricky's opportunity to come back,
01:06:26to make a statement,
01:06:28to show that he's a man of his word.
01:06:32This is a fight that's going to generate revenue all over the world.
01:06:46They come from the ends of the earth.
01:06:49That's what this fight is all about.
01:06:52The pride of England, Ricky Hatton,
01:06:55and the pride of the Philippines, Manny Pacquiao.
01:07:00Everybody was up for the fight.
01:07:04We thought Richard, again, had the tools to do it.
01:07:08We at Golden Boy are very proud
01:07:10to be part of such a huge and mega event,
01:07:15an event that is worldwide.
01:07:19My head wasn't quite right.
01:07:22But I think, you know,
01:07:26I was thinking to myself,
01:07:28it's another big payday, another chance to fight
01:07:30one of the pound-for-pound best.
01:07:34It's exciting times for me, different things to work on,
01:07:37and sadly, you know, I parted company with Billy Graham.
01:07:40So I've got a new coach, which I'll be announcing,
01:07:43the coach, in the next week or so.
01:07:47It's after Billy Floyd Mayweather Sr. comes in.
01:07:5256 years old,
01:07:55get up in the morning, eat cake, drink Kool-Aid,
01:07:59candy bars, cookies.
01:08:03That's what I get.
01:08:06I'm not going to lie.
01:08:08I'm not going to lie.
01:08:10I'm not going to lie.
01:08:12I'm not going to lie.
01:08:14That's what I get.
01:08:16And that's a bizarre one, obviously.
01:08:21Although Floyd Mayweather Sr. is a good coach,
01:08:23but of course he's the dad of the man who's just handed Ricky
01:08:26his first beating.
01:08:31I wasn't handling things in me head.
01:08:34And I thought, you know, Floyd Mayweather Sr.
01:08:37could use the greatest fighter that's ever lived, arguably.
01:08:40Do you know what I mean?
01:08:42Something new to get your juices flowing again,
01:08:45I think that maybe could work.
01:09:12But Floyd, as much as he was a good coach,
01:09:15he was very, very old school.
01:09:22But he got that medicine ball and was just pounding.
01:09:31What do I do? Nobody's stepping in.
01:09:35Ah!
01:09:38I just wanted to put a pause to this for the moment
01:09:42and say, hey, come here.
01:09:44You don't need... It can't be like this.
01:09:46It can't be this rough. You've got to save it for the fight.
01:09:53Ah!
01:09:56I think he actually drove... I think he drove me into the ground.
01:10:08I remember being in one particular sparring session.
01:10:14And as I come in with a right hand, he hooked me and I went down.
01:10:18I got out of the ring from my sparring and I put the towel over my head
01:10:22and I just started crying.
01:10:24And my dad come up at the time and he went,
01:10:26you're all right, son, you're all right, son.
01:10:28I went, Dad, just leave me. Dad, just leave me.
01:10:30Leave me, Dad. Leave me, Dad.
01:10:37I was crumbling as a person.
01:10:40I was crumbling as a person.
01:10:42I was crumbling as a person.
01:10:45A lot of people don't know I wanted him to pull out of the fight.
01:10:49That fight is the only fight I thought,
01:10:53we need a miracle here.
01:10:57His mental side, he just wasn't there.
01:11:15CHEERING
01:11:19Is this going to be a stellar night for Ricky Hatton?
01:11:32It was like a nightmare.
01:11:35I felt like he was fighting against the best in the world,
01:11:38already debilitated.
01:11:41And I was like, well, we can't fight then, he's got to pull him out.
01:11:56I felt like I was getting ready to go to my own funeral.
01:12:04I'm trying to tell meself,
01:12:07listen, you just get one of them Ricky Hatton body shots,
01:12:10right on the ribs, it'll be all over.
01:12:13It'll be all over.
01:12:21Great reception for Hatton.
01:12:25Packed up MGM brand, here we go.
01:12:27Can Ricky Hatton do it?
01:12:29Can he become pound-for-pound champion for Britain?
01:12:33They have to watch him.
01:12:35Look at this, 1, 2, 3, 4.
01:12:37Very heavy-looking punches, he really let them go.
01:12:39And a right hand, puts Hatton on the floor.
01:12:42He still has the power, even at this weight.
01:12:45He left himself open.
01:12:48I don't believe this.
01:12:50He needs to shut down his hands up,
01:12:52he needs to think what he's doing here.
01:12:54He's still as strong at this weight,
01:12:57having been a four-weight world champion.
01:12:59Oh, that might end it.
01:13:01Massive left hand, lays Hatton out.
01:13:04Do they need a count here?
01:13:06I think this is the end of it, it is over.
01:13:08Ricky Hatton's dream has died.
01:13:10Manny Pacquiao has taken him out.
01:13:14Let us hope he is OK,
01:13:16because that was a big, big knockdown.
01:13:20Doesn't look as though his eyes are focusing, Ian.
01:13:23He doesn't look as though his eyes are focusing.
01:13:26Doesn't look as though his eyes are focusing, Ian.
01:13:28He looks in a very bad way there, Hatton.
01:13:57It's brutal.
01:14:01To knock me absolutely cold.
01:14:04It's like my world had ended.
01:14:08All them eyes from day one.
01:14:13It's gone now, Rick, that.
01:14:16Boxing's over now for you.
01:14:21You're finished.
01:14:24You're finished. Done.
01:14:26Done.
01:14:50I went to hospital with him straight after the fight.
01:14:54I knew that his head wasn't right.
01:15:00I felt guilty.
01:15:05Got all emotional again.
01:15:07Me and my wife in the hotel room,
01:15:09and I said I should have protected him more, but what could I do?
01:15:14He didn't want to pull out, it's the nature of him.
01:15:19I'm sorry about this.
01:15:22Cos it's really one of the first times I've spoke about it
01:15:25in all these years.
01:15:32The problem with boxing is that when there's
01:15:35a hell of a lot of money involved,
01:15:37it can obscure people's view on things.
01:15:47You know, a lot of people don't view an athlete like Ricky
01:15:50as a person.
01:15:52They view him as an asset.
01:15:54Everyone's going, this kid's going to be a world champion
01:15:57and he's going to earn fucking millions.
01:15:59And that means, on the back of him, so am I.
01:16:04Never mind about the collateral damage along the way.
01:16:11Before you know it, you're retiring from boxing.
01:16:15And you feel broken.
01:16:21MUSIC FADES
01:16:37When I retired after Pacquiao,
01:16:40I found it a struggle.
01:16:43That's it, feet down, go up.
01:16:45That's it, good.
01:16:47And I started training fighters,
01:16:49but that was still like a bit of a smokescreen.
01:16:58You know, once you've had that feeling,
01:17:00when millions of people all around the world
01:17:03see you get your hands waved, world champion Ricky Hatton,
01:17:06there's no feeling like it.
01:17:10It's very, very hard to replace that.
01:17:13Second down, one more.
01:17:15BELL RINGS
01:17:17Stay there, stay there, have it with him.
01:17:20Good shot again.
01:17:23There's a common saying in boxing,
01:17:25it's the loneliest place in the world, and it is.
01:17:28Big, good lad.
01:17:30Especially when you retire.
01:17:32BELL RINGS
01:17:46MUSIC FADES
01:17:51I didn't intend to become a recluse, if you know what I'm saying.
01:17:55But...
01:17:57..you kind of...
01:18:00..shut yourself away.
01:18:04Then the next thing, like, the years just go by.
01:18:09We'd not spoken for a few years,
01:18:12but they owed me a load of money for the Mayweather fight.
01:18:18I used to text Ricky...
01:18:22..and go, Ricky, do the right thing.
01:18:25Just give me the money, you know what I mean?
01:18:28And that's it.
01:18:32Billy turned around and said, you know,
01:18:35I didn't get paid what I should have done.
01:18:38So when he turned around and said I'd not paid him enough,
01:18:41I went, Dad, you know, what's...
01:18:43..what's gone on here, what's gone on here?
01:18:46Well, all that happened with Billy is...
01:18:50..Billy then thought...
01:18:52..he'd been short-changed.
01:18:55I don't know what the dispute was supposed to be about.
01:18:58I should have just got my money, you know what I mean?
01:19:01Why didn't they pay him?
01:19:03Why didn't they pay you for that?
01:19:05You'll have to ask them.
01:19:08We were more than fair.
01:19:11Richard made Billy Graham a bloody millionaire.
01:19:14And it annoys you when people don't look back and think to themselves,
01:19:19thank God, wow,
01:19:22how lucky was I that somebody bought that little fella
01:19:27into my gin all those years ago?
01:19:30What a shame that they don't think that way.
01:19:36I'd had enough and we had to have a meeting with lawyers.
01:19:45Former world boxing champion Ricky Hatton
01:19:47is squaring up for his latest battle.
01:19:49Hatton's being sued for more than a million pounds
01:19:52by his former trainer, Billy Graham.
01:19:54The pair worked together for 11 years before Graham...
01:19:58I've got my trainer, who I love, my best mate,
01:20:01and my father, who I love equally.
01:20:05Who do I believe?
01:20:07Whose side do I take? What do I do here?
01:20:11That's when, you know, I'd taken drugs.
01:20:15But then, from that moment in, went a little bit into overdrive,
01:20:20let's say that, to say the least, yeah.
01:20:28It's a spectacular fall from grace.
01:20:30The image of Ricky Hatton taking cocaine
01:20:33splashed across the front of the news of the world.
01:20:37I said, they must have it wrong.
01:20:39It was a sign of his face.
01:20:43But it was a particularly personalised bracelet.
01:20:48That was obviously Richard.
01:20:52It was devastating.
01:20:58I'd go out on my own.
01:21:01And I'd just knock about with randoms,
01:21:04doing stuff I shouldn't have done.
01:21:06And anyone could be taking a picture of me and anything like that,
01:21:09but I didn't care.
01:21:12In the moment, it was so shocking.
01:21:16But at the time, there was a lot going on in his own head.
01:21:22And I think the structure of boxing gone,
01:21:25it got worse.
01:21:27It got worse.
01:21:29I never thought the court case would happen.
01:21:57I never thought it would come to that.
01:21:59But he believed them instead of me.
01:22:08I think it was over in about four or five days.
01:22:15Every day after the court, I just walked straight out, just got pissed.
01:22:18It was killing me, bit by bit, it was killing me.
01:22:23It was absolutely killing me.
01:22:33The first question to Ricky was, how much did you get for the Kosozoo fight?
01:22:41So Ricky says, which I always thought, a million, million pounds.
01:22:50So my lawyer just went, no, you didn't, you got 1,200,000, that suggested that somebody
01:23:05else took 200 grand.
01:23:10I looked at Ray Hatton and I seen Ray Hatton making these gestures, you know what I mean?
01:23:17I don't mind telling you what the fallout was, because when you haven't done something,
01:23:22you can say it.
01:23:25They accused me that I was taking out money.
01:23:30They said money has gone into this account, this account, and this account.
01:23:38I went to my accountant and I said, there's been money going into other accounts.
01:23:43And he went, yeah, and I went, what, how much, and he told me, I went, oh, I went,
01:23:52oh, no.
01:23:53You've got to understand, everybody talks to each other.
01:24:00I asked somebody, how much, he just went, fucking loads.
01:24:05He might have said, fucking millions, I don't fucking know.
01:24:10Nobody ever came out right and said that Ray Hatton had stolen money, right?
01:24:20Ray is a lot of things he would not steal from his son.
01:24:27To try and safeguard Richard's finances, we set up a discretionary trust.
01:24:33It no longer legally is your money, but you and your family and your family down is the
01:24:40beneficiaries of it.
01:24:41I tried to tell him what had been done.
01:24:46And then, unfortunately, he turned around and said to me, you've been ripping me off.
01:24:52And when I come out, they'll call me out, just flopped out my body.
01:25:01I said, you can't move money and not tell the person in charge, you know, what's going on.
01:25:07You can't do that.
01:25:12It was all a misunderstanding.
01:25:15And I hadn't done the things that people said I'd done.
01:25:25Ricky Hatton has settled a £1.4 million claim for unpaid wages from his former trainer.
01:25:30Hatton reached a mutually acceptable deal with Billy Graham.
01:25:36I was vindicated in my eyes, do you know what I mean?
01:25:41But then I felt disgusted with myself to have felt like that.
01:25:52It is a tragedy.
01:25:55I think it's how it ended.
01:26:01I felt let down because I lost one of my best mates.
01:26:07And stuff was happening with my money that I didn't know about.
01:26:13I said to me dad, I think it's time we buy a company and have a little bit, give ourselves
01:26:19a bit of distance.
01:26:23I think it lasted for eight years.
01:26:46We'd already spoken about having a baby.
01:26:50We decided to try for Millie.
01:26:52And then later we had Fern.
01:26:56Start with that was great.
01:26:57But quite quickly, Rick was back in like a spiral of drinking.
01:27:03And he was really in like a bad depression now.
01:27:08There wasn't a night I'd go out and I wouldn't have drugs.
01:27:18I'd go out, you know, and I wouldn't come home.
01:27:22My family, Jennifer, would be worried about me, where is he, where is he?
01:27:27I didn't care.
01:27:30I can only apologise for my behaviour for that period.
01:27:34But as you can imagine, I was a poorly man.
01:27:38I desperately wanted him to share in the joy of our baby.
01:27:51And he couldn't, I couldn't reach him.
01:27:59He was not speaking to his family.
01:28:02It was all consuming for him.
01:28:04It just became like an obsession.
01:28:06It was all he could talk about all of the time.
01:28:14He may have thought I'd wronged him.
01:28:17I thought he'd wronged me.
01:28:18We couldn't see no way that it was going to be resolved.
01:28:25I was like grieving for my lad.
01:28:30Because he was alive, but didn't want to see us.
01:28:38He used to ring people up and said,
01:28:41could you let him know that his family haven't gone anywhere?
01:28:48He just used to text and say, Mum, don't phone, don't phone.
01:28:53You're not my mum anymore.
01:28:56And it was...
01:29:09It was bloody hard.
01:29:11You just think, from where we were as a loving family,
01:29:17holidaying together and doing so much together,
01:29:23how has this got to this?
01:29:42I felt as if he was walking down a dark tunnel away from me,
01:29:46and I couldn't do anything to get him back.
01:29:57I had no more boxing, no more Billy Graham,
01:30:02and no more Mum and Dad.
01:30:06And I just felt like I was going to die.
01:30:11I just didn't want to live.
01:30:17Night after night after night, you know,
01:30:19I'd sit there with a knife, and I'd be thinking,
01:30:21come on, you can do this, you can do this.
01:30:23And I couldn't, I couldn't do it.
01:30:26I couldn't do it, and I hated myself.
01:30:27I thought, you can do anything, you can beat him, beat him,
01:30:30fight him, do this, do that,
01:30:32but you can't just fucking kill yourself.
01:30:34He's a good person, and a lot of hard things
01:30:40has happened to him that has left him scarred.
01:30:47But I knew, after years and years and years, at this point,
01:30:51I knew I couldn't help him.
01:30:56I was leaving him when he needed me the most.
01:31:04But it was like a choice between peace or chaos,
01:31:09and I couldn't choose chaos anymore.
01:31:13And I went through a period
01:31:15where I didn't care whether I lived or died,
01:31:17and I thought to myself, I went fucking over it.
01:31:19This is bad this, this is bad this.
01:31:21You need to fucking sort yourself out
01:31:23and get yourself in the right space,
01:31:25and you need to get yourself in the right space,
01:31:27and you need to get yourself in the right space.
01:31:29And I've been doing that for a long time,
01:31:31and I could see it and I've seen it because it was so hard.
01:31:35It can be hard to deal with,
01:31:36but it's like a lot of different things
01:31:39over it, this is bad this, this is bad this, you need to fucking sort yourself out, get
01:31:43yourself together, and I went and saw a psychiatrist, and you know what the best
01:31:46thing I did was go and speak to this fucking fella, this fella, I tell you what
01:31:50it brought me back to fucking life, it brought me back to life, if there's
01:31:55anyone here is suffering from it, please go and fucking speak to someone, you know,
01:32:02don't be proud, don't be proud.
01:32:09Ladies and gentlemen, Ricky Lillipant Matzohir!
01:32:29Ricky Hatton is back in the ring at the Manchester Arena against another former
01:32:35champion Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera.
01:32:41It took me a long time to get on the straight and narrow, but bit by bit it was
01:32:48like a work in progress. I mean I still have bad days now, but as I'm getting
01:32:55older I'm knowing how to deal with it and how to cope with it, you know, a lot
01:33:00better. The phone went, they said listen Rick, how would you like to do an
01:33:05exhibition, you know, at the Manchester Arena, like for one last time, you know,
01:33:09it's given me a lifestyle change, not just getting ready for the exhibition, you
01:33:13know, I mean Ricky Fatton is gone now, Ricky Hatton's got his train, Ricky Hatton's
01:33:17getting older, so I've got to stay like this, but to share the ring with a great
01:33:21man, I never thought this would ever happen.
01:33:30Yeah.
01:33:35Yeah, Matt.
01:33:41One day another member of the family phoned me up and said, you know, mum's had a
01:33:45mail, I was absolutely heartbroken, I was crying, I was like, and I thought to
01:33:50myself, listen Rick, you know, there's only one person that can put this family
01:33:55back together.
01:34:01I came out of the hospital and my phone went, and I looked at the text and it
01:34:11said, I'll come and see you.
01:34:18He knocked on the door and he said, are you putting the keckle on or what?
01:34:22No, I said, do you want a brew?
01:34:24No, he said no, because he was very, very nervous.
01:34:27Yes, he was nervous. He came in didn't he, Ray? Give us a hug.
01:34:32Sat here, had a brew, and as he was going, Ray was sat in that chair and he gave his
01:34:38dad a hug.
01:34:42I said, how did I ever go eight years without seeing you?
01:34:49It took me a long time to get where I am physically and mentally.
01:34:53Made up with my mum and dad. We fell out for a number of years, but they're there
01:34:59Saturday night, which means more to me than anything.
01:35:09It's not happened overnight.
01:35:14The first 12 months, I think my mum and dad would agree, were the hardest.
01:35:24We're 90% there with everything, but when it's been eight years, you can't push it.
01:35:44It's got to be baby steps, but for the first time in a long time, we're getting Richard
01:35:52Hatton back. Not The Hitman, not Ricky Hatton, Richard Hatton.
01:36:02I'm done with all the bullshit. I just want to be happy with me. I just want to be happy
01:36:08with my family now.
01:36:13Too many bad times, and for a family that's had so many good times, enough's a fucking
01:36:17enough for me.
01:36:47You'd like to turn the clock back, wouldn't you, and be lifting world titles?
01:37:02I think back in the early days, when it first started, and I was a little Manchester Scallywag,
01:37:11a little whippersnapper, sat on that step in Salford, Billy Graham, talking about being
01:37:19the best in the world.
01:37:23They're the true days, aren't they? No money, no bullshit. We were just two little scrubbers
01:37:31sat on that step, talking about conquering the world.
01:37:35I think about him quite a lot. When it was me and him in the gym, planning our next fight,
01:37:45just me and him, and everybody wanted to see how good this kid was going to be.
01:38:05I sometimes get annoyed when people say, it's because of his personality, because he was
01:38:12a man of the people.
01:38:17Yeah, he is still a working class kid. He is down to earth. So I think people, you know,
01:38:26kind of say, that's why he was so popular.
01:38:35Bingo!
01:38:41But what they're forgetting is the main thing. Why he was so popular is because he could
01:38:50fight like fuck.
