00:0025 years ago, EMDR, acronym for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, was introduced
00:13in Italy.
00:14Recommended by the WHO as one of the most effective therapies for disorders related to stress
00:20and trauma, EMDR focuses on the therapeutic treatment of the traumatic experience at the
00:25neurobiological level through alternate bilateral stimulation.
00:29EMDR therapy arrived in Italy 25 years ago.
00:35At that time there was no great knowledge in the field of psychotherapy of all the mechanisms
00:43of trauma, of traumatic experiences and also and above all of the contribution of traumatic
00:50experiences in various disorders.
00:54So, a lot of research has been done on this and the EMDR Association has invested a lot
01:03in understanding the role of trauma in mental health and obviously its role in pathology
01:12and therefore a lot of research has been developed in this regard.
01:17We have seen how trauma has now become a transdiagnostic aspect, which at the time
01:28was unthinkable.
01:30In these 25 years since the arrival of EMDR therapy in Italy, as well as the knowledge,
01:36we have also seen how effective it was in acute situations, in emergency, after a
01:44natural disaster, to go to work with the population, with children, in schools.
01:53We have also seen a great development at the hospital level, we have seen it in the field
02:00of abuse, of violence, there has been a great evolution also in the treatment of food disorders
02:08and all these evolutions, these fields of application were also accompanied by research,
02:14because one thing that has characterized the development of EMDR therapy in Italy has
02:19been the amount of research that has been done, published in scientific journals.
02:26Among the characteristics of EMDR therapy is also the transversality to the different
02:30disciplines of mental health.
02:32In recent years we have seen how EMDR has been integrating with other approaches in
02:39psychotherapy and therefore EMDR has been used and is regularly used by therapists with
02:50different training, which start from different approaches, from different theories of the
02:56different approaches, but can always work with the EMDR protocol by inserting it in
03:02their clinical practice.
