00:00Hello everybody and welcome back to another episode of my proposed British tank tech tree.
00:07In the last episode we dealt with the cruisers, fast, lightly armoured, ok armed tanks.
00:13This episode we're looking at the infantry tanks.
00:18Heavily armoured, very slow and pretty much the same guns as the cruisers.
00:24Now unfortunately for us there was only 4 main infantry tanks created during the war
00:29and one of them was phased out very quickly due to having a machine gun as armament.
00:35There is one heavy tank at the end of the list as well that I thought would fit better
00:39in the infantry tank line than the cruiser line so we'll look at that as well.
00:46But like I said it was a bit hard thinking up some of the infantry tanks and where they're
00:52going to go in the tech tree.
00:53If you look you may see I have made some changes with regards to the infantry tanks and some
00:59of the tank destroyer guns line up but anyway we'll get straight into the video and I hope
01:06you enjoy it.
01:08Now the first tank we're going to look at is the infantry tank Mk2 Matilda.
01:12For those of you who are wondering why we haven't got a Mk1 Matilda, the simple reason
01:17is it was only armed with a machine gun, though it had good armour, 12-60mm, but only one
01:2350 caliber machine gun in the turret so we're not going to cover that.
01:32The Matilda Mk2 was a massive improvement over the Mk1, 20-78mm of armour, but more
01:39importantly it was armed with a 2-pounder cannon so it had some form of anti-tank capability.
01:45It wasn't particularly fast though, 15mph on road, about 8mph off road, so quite a slow
01:53tank but reasonably well armed and extremely well armoured for the time.
01:59Now these tanks were hard to produce, only 3,000 were made despite being in production
02:03from 1937 to 1942, they only had two of them at the beginning of the war, so for 1937 and
02:101938 and 1939 they only managed to produce two of them, and then they managed to produce
02:14another 3,000 from 1939 to 1942 or 1943 or whenever it was, so they must have been quite
02:20hard to produce, and there was only 20 of them in France, and along with Matilda Mk1s
02:27they were used at the Battle of Arras, it was something like 60 Mk1s and 16 Mk2s, and
02:34the attack was repelled but the German 37mm guns were useless and they had to use the
02:4088mms and artillery, I think they were firing everything, I've got a book on it, I think
02:47they were even using 20mm guns just for firing everything they had, and even though the attack
02:52was repelled, Rommel, who was there at the time, reported something like hundreds of
02:57tanks which helped contribute to the Hotholder which allowed the British Expeditionary Force
03:03to escape, now I've put the tank at tier 1, well high tier 1, because it has got a
03:12big gun, I mean it's got quite a big gun, but more importantly it has very good armour,
03:18so obviously we don't want it to be too low down in the tiers, but obviously we don't
03:23want it to be too high where it's going to be useless, so high tier 1 is where I've put
03:27it, and it's one of those iconic tanks from the early war, it was used to great effect
03:33in the desert as well, it wasn't obsolete until 1942, so definitely one of the main
03:38tanks that would have to be included in the game, unfortunately it was never upgunned
03:43so can't really make it more powerful unfortunately, and it sort of limits how many variants you
03:50can add, but I think just the main variant alone would be worth adding into the game.
03:55Now the next tank we're looking at is the infantry tank Mk3 Valentine, now this is oddly
04:00enough based on the cruiser A-10, which if you watched my last episode you may know was
04:05not too much of a success, but thankfully the infantry tank version based on it was
04:12a lot better, now there's a few different variants of it we're looking at because unlike
04:17the Matilda it was upgunned, now we'll start off with the armour which was about 8-65mm,
04:23so less armour but seems a little bit more sloped, so it might have been more actually
04:30better or at least the same possibly, now the speed was about 15mph on road and 8mph
04:37off road, so like the Matilda Mk2, now the first variants, the Mk1 to the Mk7 were armed
04:43with the 2 pounder gun like the Mk2, now I've put the 2 pounder variants of this tank in
04:49the tier 2, for the simple reason I don't want to clog up tier 1 with too many later
04:57war tanks, I know the M3 Grant in the American trees are I think tier 1 despite being quite
05:03like 1941-1942, but I don't want to fill up, we've already got like 3 cruisers in tier
05:091 and we've got the Matilda Mk2 and the Sentinel, I don't want to fill it up with too many tanks,
05:17if we quickly move on to the Mk8-10, now these are armed with the 57mm gun, the 6 pounder,
05:25and as far as I'm aware it has the same armour, same speed, now I've put that high tier 2
05:31because it's not quite good enough to go to tier 3 where you're going to have a lot of
05:3575mm or long barrelled 75mm tanks, but I don't want it to be too low in tier 2 because otherwise
05:43it may seal club a lot of early tanks, especially with the quite strong armour, so I think high
05:49tier 2 or low tier 3 is probably the best place to put it, of course you may feel free
05:55to disagree in which case you can put it in the comments, we'll quickly move to the Valentine
06:01Mk11, now this was armed with a, I'm trying to find it, 75mm gun, not the 17 pounder,
06:11now this is basically the most powerful variant of the Valentine as a gun tank, there may
06:17have been special variants with ridiculously high powered howitzers and explosive charges,
06:25I've put this about mid tier 3 because it's a 75mm gun, I must admit I'm not entirely
06:31sure how well the 75mm gun did compared to the Germans or the Americans etc etc, but
06:40I think about mid tier 3 would be the best place for it because obviously by now it's
06:46armour is starting to get a little bit outdated and obsolete so I don't want it to be too
06:51high but again not too low or you'll get seal clubbing so I think mid tier 3 is a good place
06:57for it, now the next tank is the infantry tank Mk4 Churchill and boy did I have a lot
07:02of trouble working out where to put everything on this, now there was a lot of different
07:09variants of it, let's just read out some of the stats, it could do 12.5mph on road
07:15or about 8mph off road so quite a bit slower than the Matilda Mk2, the original version
07:22also had about a 16-102mm of armour so very well armoured if not very particularly well
07:30armed at least in the first variant, unfortunately the first variant introduced the, I'm trying
07:37to find the name, the Mk1 was only armed with a 2 pounder gun or in some cases a 2 pounder
07:44gun and a 76mm howitzer in the hull, now I've moved the howitzer version off to the tank
07:50destroyers assault gun part of the tech tree but I have no idea where to put the version
07:56with just the 2 pounder gun because obviously I don't want it to be too high because it
08:01will be absolutely useless but I don't want it to look weird if I have the Mk3 Valentine
08:07then a Churchill and then another Mk3 Valentine so I really didn't know what to do with it.
08:12In the end I have sort of put it before the Valentine, the last variant of the Valentine,
08:18this wasn't usually done in War Thunder, I think until recently, I think there's like
08:22the Panther D and then the Panther A in the German tank tech tree, you get the F8F Bearcat
08:30and then the F7F Tigercat, so it's not like it's without precedent anymore, it looks a
08:37bit weird, they should be pretty, you know, I just wasn't sure how to do it in the end,
08:43it was just a lot of trouble trying to work out where to put it so I've put for the Mk1
08:48version with the 2 pounder cannon to be something like low tier 3 or something, yeah I'm not
08:56really sure what else to do with it. Now I also had a problem with the Churchill Mk4
09:01because this only had a 57mm gun or 6 pounder and again I don't want it to be too high up
09:07the tech tree, if you look at comparable 57mm guns on the cruisers they're about tier 3
09:15no higher than tier 4 so again I can't really have it after the Valentine so I really have
09:21no idea what to do with it, well I did have no idea what to do with it, in the end I've
09:25sort of put it together with the Mk1, I think they should be sort of boxed, grouped together
09:30or at least one after the other but really I've no easy solution for these two tanks,
09:36you could just not include them perhaps but I think it would be a bit of a shame because
09:40you would then only have the advanced variants of the Churchill.
09:45Now speaking of advanced variants of the Churchill we move on to the Churchill Mk7, now one of
09:50the most important changes is changes to the armour, the frontal armour is now 152mm,
09:57this is quite important and quite a lot of armour if you compare it to the Tiger II which
10:01has 185mm, so yeah we're talking almost as much as the Tiger II and I think actually
10:10more than the Tiger I so a heavily armoured tank. The other important change is it got
10:15a 155mm gun, so again we're starting to see improvements in firepower, now I've put this
10:24about tier 4 because I don't want to put it too high, well it needs to be tier 4 because
10:29it's got good armour and a good gun but I don't want it to be too high because you'll
10:33start bumping into the very very very late war tanks and I think this was produced probably
10:39about 1944 maybe, no later than 1945, some were actually used after 1945 but I assume
10:46that was mainly in the other variants such as bridge laying and mine flail tanks, that
10:56sort of things. Now like I said I had a bit of trouble deciding where they were all going
11:02to be but I definitely think it would be worth putting the Churchill tanks in, now like I
11:08said well it's probably going to cause a lot of confusion and complaints no matter
11:13how it's done, so yeah it's a problem I don't really have the solution to at the moment
11:19unfortunately but I think these would be very good tanks to add into the game. Now staying
11:25on the subject of difficult tanks, the next tank gave me a bit of a headache as well,
11:33this was a prototype of the Conqueror, basically from what I understand the British army wanted
11:47some sort of tank chassis hull that could be used for various different things, an actual
11:54gun tank, self propelled artillery, bridge laying, engineer type vehicles, all that sort
12:00of stuff. In the end I think that role ended up being used by the Centurion which we covered
12:07in the last episode but they decided to turn it into a gun tank which was done by fitting
12:13a turret, a Centurion Mk2 turret to the hull which became the Carnivron Mk1, now that was
12:21armed with a 17lb gun that first experimental prototype, but they also built some more prototypes
12:33with a 20lb turret, so these were both produced, the first one is experimental only of like
12:41one or two produced, the other ones were the 20lb cannons, there was something like 20
12:45or so built, so it was built in not massively large numbers but the 20lb at least was built
12:51in sufficient numbers that I think it could potentially be included. The other problem
12:57is the Conqueror, well the Conqueror is the same tank, it's like what it eventually became
13:02after all the prototype and testing was done. Now this tank was actually armed with a 120mm
13:08cannon, like the M103, I think it's actually the same cannon as the M103 and had two 7.62mm
13:14machine guns, it could do a speed of about 21.3mph on the road, not sure about cross
13:21country, as well as 180mm of armour. Unfortunately for us it was produced in like 1954-1955,
13:31just outside the cut off date, but like I said the cut off date, they do seem to show
13:36some leeway with it at some time, so again I have included it. I think we should probably
13:42get the Carnarvon, I'm going to hate pronouncing that name in a minute, because otherwise Britain
13:49hasn't got any sort of heavy tanks for the high tiers other than the Centurion, and while
13:54it would have the same guns as the Centurion, I assume it would also have the 180mm armour
14:01which would make it a lot more competitive. I think the Centurion only had 150mm of armour,
14:07so while it would have a good gun, it would have good armour, ok speed, and yeah I definitely
14:14think it should go in tier 5, especially since it's a post war tank and seems like it would
14:19definitely do very good for itself, whether as a Conqueror variant or the Carnarvon variants
14:25with the 17 and 20 pounder guns. Well anyway, the video has come out a bit shorter than
14:31I expected, I could go on and do the Commonwealth tanks, but I'll probably leave them for another
14:37own episode, otherwise it will ruin the pacing of the video and people may get bored watching
14:43the infantry tanks and then not see the Commonwealth tanks, so I prefer to put them in a separate
14:48video. Like I said at the beginning, it is a bit of a problem trying to sort out all
14:53the infantry tanks, there was only 4 basic variants and one of them had a machine gun,
14:58so I only had 3 to really work with, plus the Carnarvon, but I hope you enjoyed the
15:07video nonetheless, leave a like if you did enjoy the video, leave feedback or comments,
15:12you can always do with that, subscribe if you like these sorts of videos, and well thank
15:18you for watching and I'll see you next time.
