00:00Nigeria police force appeared to have restricted press freedom in Lagos state as some journalists were seen harassed by police team at Lekki tollgate on Thursday.
00:07A video made available online few hours ago by News Central Television indicated that the TV reporter was interrupted and stopped mid-air from reporting at the Lekki tollgate while online broadcast by police operatives who threatened to arrest the journalist simply for reporting activities at the tollgate.
00:20Prior to the stoppage, an earlier footage showed some policemen interrogating the journalist, threatening to take the News Central Lane reporter to the station for reporting what the police did not permit him to report.
00:30According to one of the police officers in the video, the police team has been stationed at the Lekki tollgate for days.
00:36Adding, they are under the strict instructions of the Lagos State Commissioner of Police to do their work.
00:41The police officer questioned the news reporter while they decided to come to Lekki tollgate to cover activities at the area.
00:46The News Central reporter while explaining himself to the police officers said they took permission from the police to only record activities at the Lekki tollgate for just 10 minutes.
00:55The reporter could be seen telling the police to check their recordings to be sure they were not inciting violence or reporting what they were not permitted to report.
01:02The current state of the reporter could not be ascertained as at press time as the video recording went off for the second time when the reporter was reporting live from the tollgate.
01:10Okay, there are a few police officers here who are asking us to put a stop to the recording. Please hold on. We already have taken permission.
01:18Alright, we may have to go from here and come back if we can. We were granted permission by the LCC officials, but the police officers have asked us to stop the recording.
01:30So if we are granted permission, we'll come back to this live recording. If not, well, this is the most we can take at the moment.
01:38Well, thank you so much, Bernard Akede, for that brave reporting. And these are live pictures from the scene.
01:45Recall earlier, we were talking to our correspondent. Our correspondent has been interrogated, so we'll sit back and listen to what is transpiring.
02:08Right, it's our job. We go around telling the news.
02:11Well, that's the way it is, Sonia.
02:13I think so.
02:15We are here with a massive news plate. Automatically, this thing, people want to tell the news plate, come here to cut.
02:22Why will you come here and cut? What is happening here?
02:26This is not the place designated for protest.
02:29It is not only the place designated for protest that journalists are going to. We are going around the state to report what is happening.
02:36All I did on my broadcast that was to say that there is relative peace and calm here.
02:41And that is all. I have colleagues in other places who are doing the same thing.
02:44When you come to this sit-down, where you want to cut, do you know what is happening?
02:47We are everywhere.
02:49Do you inform the police?
02:50There was a policeman who was here that we spoke to already.
02:52The elderly man called me.
02:54There was a policeman who was here.
02:56We spoke to him. We called the LCC guy. Two of them came. We spoke to them.
03:00And they said, fine, how long will the broadcast take? Ten minutes?
03:02Ten minutes.
03:03And we started.
03:04Barely three minutes.
03:06That's all.
03:07We are not provoking anybody.
03:10We are not inciting anything.
03:12We are in different parts of Lagos.
03:14We are in Lagos. We are in Abuja.
03:15We are in Boronu.
03:16We are in Abia.
03:18We are in River State.
03:19We are in Delta State.
03:20And this is what is happening across the country and across the state.
03:22We need to get you to the office, my friend.
03:25You know what, then?
03:26You are doing what you believe you are doing.
03:28But we are here covering you for more than a week now.
03:31Commissioner sent us here for a purpose.
03:33And it is your job.
03:35What you are casting may not be what we intend you to cast.
03:39Would you like to see what I casted?
03:40Or what you are saying you are casting?
03:42Would you like to see what I casted?
03:44Would you like to see it? I will show it to you now.
03:46Would you like to see it?
03:47You know that the Lagos State Governor has designated two places in Lagos.
03:52And I said, I know.
03:53We have people in those two places already.
03:55We have people who are here.
03:57We have people who are in Alausa.
03:59We have people in different parts of the state.
04:01Now, our job is just to say that there is peace and calm in the state.
04:05And that is exactly what we are doing.
04:07If you want me to show you, I will show it to you now.
04:09Nothing apart from what you said.
04:11You need to be very, very careful.
04:13Because what you think you are doing, you are bringing focus to...
04:17No, no, I disagree.
04:19No, no, I disagree.
04:21I disagree.
04:23We can show you our live streaming.
04:25What we are doing is showing that there is peace and calm across the state.
04:28And that is exactly what I said on camera.
04:30And if you want, I will show it to you now.
04:32We are not bringing any attention to anywhere.
04:34What we are doing is exactly what I told you.
04:38I can show it to you if you want to see.
04:40I will play it back on the camera for you.
04:46If I said no.
04:48If I said no.
04:50I told you, understand.
04:52If you said no.
04:54The first officer who came, he said, no guys, it's fine.
04:56If you want us to move away from here, we can move further down.
04:58We are not trying to fight anything.
05:00If you want to...
05:04If you want to...
05:06That is peace.
05:08And that is exactly what he said on camera.
05:28Thank you.
