00:00French Air and Space Forces showed the first ever air-to-air cooperation between France and the Philippines in Pegas 2024.
00:13Denise Osorio has the details.
00:15The French Air and Space Forces, or FASF, used military exercises with the Philippine Air Force for Pegas 2024.
00:31This is the first time that France has collaborated with the Philippines to strengthen bilateral relations between the two countries.
00:39Now, we think that it was the right moment to demonstrate that the Philippines is a strategic partner for France and that there is a will, a political will, to cooperate with the Philippines.
00:57More than 250 French military personnel were deployed for the so-called enhanced stopover here in the Philippines to prioritize the concrete air-to-air cooperation between the two countries.
01:12They also brought two A330M RTTs, two Rafale fighters, and two A400Ms.
01:19One of the two A400Ms will be used for the demonstration of FASF's strength in the Himpapawid.
01:50and then go back with four or five hours logistic flights.
01:53The aircraft, helicopters, and armored vehicles with passengers can be used for relief and rescue operations.
02:05The military aircraft was flown to the northwest area of Subic Bay for the demonstration, and it has no direct connection to the events in the West Philippine Sea.
02:16It's always important to recall that it's not the situation in the West Philippine Sea that makes us willing to be more, to partner more with the Philippines.
02:26It's much more, I mean it has to do with the fact that according to our Indo-Pacific strategy, we want to, we are looking better at the place and we want to ensure our diversified partnerships in the region.
02:43Ambassador Fontanel added that they are not surprised or offended by the situation in the east of the country,
02:49and that respect for the international law of the sea and freedom of navigation is a priority and most important.
02:55Of course, we are concerned by the rise of tensions, but there is no, this would be a misunderstanding, I think, to consider that there is a direct link
03:06between the situation in the South China Sea and our increased partnership.
03:11Fontanel also said that it's normal for military forces to train with other countries that are not targeted,
03:19and that this is just a chance for them to arrive in the Philippines because of the strengthening of bilateral relations of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.
