At the Farnborough Air Show 2024, BAE Systems take us on a tour of the latest technology and projects they have been working on.

00:00As you can see, there's sort of a theme today, like digital thread that's running through, which sort of resembles innovation beyond boundaries.
00:10So that's saying that although we're an air show, we are a business which caters for land, sea, air, space and everything in between.
00:20So that's sort of the theme that will run through the whole show.
00:30So, I'm going to give you a bit of a view of how someone stands on display.
00:55So, here we've got the Strider 2, it's a helmet. It's in service now with the Typhoon aircraft.
01:03It's a very interesting concept, so it's got LED lights all around it, and the idea is that there's a little camera on the stand,
01:15and you can see there on the whole, which tracks the pilot's head as he's moving around.
01:21So, for example, if there's an enemy 50 kilometres, for example, to the left of him, instead of just being on the display in front of him,
01:30when he actually turns his head to the left, it'll flag up.
01:33So you can see, actually, just as this guy's looking around on the screen, that's what he's seeing.
01:40And then, obviously, you've got all sorts of other aspects just to improve the pilot's situational awareness,
01:50and take a bit of the workload off, really.
01:54So, I don't know whether you're interested or interested, but if you want more technical information,
02:01I can speak to what the standards would be to give you that, or just an overview.
02:06Yeah, just an overview is fine for me.
02:08Okay, that's fine.
02:10How cool it is, Sam, that we've got test pilots, like a handful of test pilots, at Wharton.
02:16It's just pretty cool that they are developing and trialling this technology there in Lancashire.
02:22Really? Wow.
02:23Yeah.
02:24You just don't know it on your doorstep, do you? It's just mad.
02:28What we've got here is the Eurofighter cockpit demonstrator.
02:32So, this is basically a full-size type of simulator, essentially.
02:36But the idea behind it is, what's used is the new LAD, Stand for Large Area Display.
02:43So, what it used to be was three pre-level panels of that big, just in front of the pilots, various things.
02:51It incorporates everything that was on them, pre-panels and more.
02:54It incorporates everything that was on them, pre-panels and more, on a much bigger display.
02:58So, if you actually come around here,
03:07this screen that you can see is what's actually on the larger panel of the screen.
03:16Obviously, the guy behind this pilot is going to get involved in the training a lot less, a lot more efficiently,
03:24get a real good understanding of the system before they're in the situation where, you know,
03:30they're potentially in a battlefield scenario.
03:33He's trying to understand all the last minute.
03:37So, that's a really good piece of training kit.
03:46So, when we go around this corner now, this is the kind of Falconworks section,
03:57which is a big thing for war, in particular, and so are the aircraft.
04:03So, there's a number of different projects on that. It's kind of a new technologies area.
04:08So, I'll just give you a little overview and then we'll go around and I'll show you what to watch.
04:14So, we've got just around the corner, the Sentinel, which is a laser detonator, UAV.
04:18So, an unmanned system, which essentially will paint a target on the floor with a laser.
04:26That will then communicate with another platform flying somewhere around it,
04:31but that's a few miles away, a few kilometres away.
04:34And that other platform will then launch a missile, destroy a target, take the target out.
04:42So, that kind of reduces, you know, risk to humans, essentially.
04:49So, both being unmanned platforms, if someone was to take that asset out,
04:54that wouldn't be going with it because it's probably controlled via an unmanned system.
