BAE Systems employees, Caitlin Harmer and Nicky Donovan speak about the introduction of new projects Kate and canDLE which use a mix of AI and human teaching to help teach apprentices.
Transcript
00:00So Project K is the Collective Apprentice Training Exercise.
00:04It's something that myself and a fellow apprentice developed on our first placement.
00:09So as an apprentice at BAE Systems, you come onto the scheme and you do eight months
00:16within the aspects of the Academy of Skills and Knowledge.
00:20It's an eight-month introductory course within a Level 2 in Engineering
00:24before going out on placements.
00:26We went out onto our placements and realised that we actually didn't know
00:30about different procedures, different protocols that the company used,
00:35so things like LCM, which is Life Cycle Management.
00:38It's a really, really important part of the company we hadn't been taught about.
00:43So myself and Archie were having discussions with our team,
00:48who I work quite closely with, several different companies,
00:52around things like education and adaptive learning through AI.
00:58We came up with Project K where the apprentices are in groups of ten.
01:03They're given a brief.
01:04So for a brief, the trial was a UAS to deliver a payload of medical supplies
01:10to a group of stranded individuals.
01:13So they were given this brief and they've had six months to design
01:17and develop their drone collaboratively,
01:23meeting a number of set requirements and working through the LCM process.
01:28When they go out onto placements within the business,
01:31they can hit the ground running and really maximise their learning.
01:36Project K is our digital learning environment.
01:38Right.
01:39And that's part of Project K, isn't it?
01:41So Project K sits within DLE and utilises a number of DLE capabilities.
01:45Yes.
01:46And it's an adaptive learning.
01:48So we're working really closely with an exclusive partner in the defence industry,
01:52which is a company called RISM.
01:54They are a deep tech Cambridge University start-up.
02:00They have a number of AI patented capabilities,
02:06which our knowledge bases are part of and that's how they use that.
02:12So it's taking all of their data analytics,
02:15the students' learning,
02:18and making them, showing them the details and the results
02:24in a way that not only helps the student,
02:27but also helps the instructors focus their face-to-face learning
02:31because they can show those data analytics.
02:34If you've got sort of a plateau, you can see those data analytics
02:38and you know that my next face-to-face class needs to be on this subject
02:44because maybe it's a different one.
02:46Right.
