00:0094.7 The Wave, I'm Greg Mack, and I wanted to invite this gentleman on with me because we're
00:07going to be doing something real fantastic. It's called the Fatherhood Conference. And check this
00:13out, from the streets to the boardroom, and Assemblyman Mike Gibson of District 65 has put
00:21all this together. How are you doing, Mr. Gibson? I am blessed in spite of me. So thank you very
00:26much, Greg. Good to see you again. Great. Tell us about this. I mean,
00:31let me just say out front, I'm excited to be a part of it, okay? I'm going to be doing something
00:37there. I don't know what you got me doing, but I'm excited, man. Tell us about this.
00:42Well, first of all, thank you very much for the coverage and appreciate your listening audience.
00:47We have come up with this Fatherhood Conference. And from, as you said, from the streets to the
00:53boardroom, we believe that iron sharpens iron. And so we will be gathering at Cal State University,
01:00Dominguez Hills on Saturday, August the 10th at 8 a.m. Saturday, August the 10th at 8 a.m. at Cal
01:09State University, Dominguez Hills, located at 1000 East Victoria Street in the beautiful city
01:14of Carson, California. 500 fathers, whether you're a brand new father or you've been a father for a
01:20long time. Iron sharpens iron. We're coming together. And we're, one, we'll start with a
01:28expungement clinic. So fathers who have stuff on their records, we want to try to see if we can
01:33get that stuff expunged. We will have a resource spare, and we'll also have employers there
01:40who will want to take applications, interview, and possibly hire individuals right there on the spot.
01:46And then we'll have swag, and we'll give away things that fathers would need. And so then we'll
01:51be joined into the main Locker Student Union Hall at Cal State Dominguez. We will gather at 9 a.m.
02:01We would come together with inspirational keynote speaker. We'll have information that will be given,
02:06and then we'll be dispersed into various classrooms, talking about various topics,
02:13things that fathers go through. And sometimes we go through those things alone. But it's good to
02:18know that another brother has gone through the same thing that you are going through.
02:22And the key operative word in there is going through, because you're not going to stay in
02:26the situation. You're coming out. And so we want to come and encourage and inspire our fathers.
02:32We want to network with individuals. We want to hear their stories. We also want to hear
02:38how we can be a stronger father to our children, to our community. Because I believe if we have a
02:43stronger father in a household, then we have a strong community. If we have a strong community,
02:49we have a strong city. If we have a strong city, we have a strong county, we have a strong state,
02:53and so forth. And so we're coming together with Project Fatherhood, with Children's Institute,
03:00with the Father Initiative, with First 5 LA, and the list goes on and on with so many
03:05collaborative individuals coming together on Saturday, August the 10th at 8 a.m. to be part
03:13of what's getting ready to take place. And so I'm excited because, one, this is our first time. We've
03:19done conferences for young girls. We've done conferences for young boys. We have done conferences
03:25for our ladies. And so we're coming together to, one, build up fathers and reconnect the fathers
03:32with their children if possible. And if they're having issues or not paying child support,
03:36we want to find out and provide information there. And also, we have to also register fathers to vote
03:43because we have a very important election coming up on November the 5th. We want everybody to be
03:47counted as well. So that's what's taking place on August the 10th at Cal State University,
03:53Dominguez Hills, at 8 a.m. in the morning until 3 o'clock p.m. in the afternoon. You don't want
03:59to miss it. It's going to be an exciting and life-transformation event where iron sharpens
04:05irons from the streets to the boardroom. And we want to make sure that men who was in the streets
04:10and now they're headed to the boardroom come and tell their stories, how they made it over.
04:16You know, I was going to add something to this, but you said it all. I mean, it's all good, man.
04:21I'm excited. I'm a grandfather, so I guess I'll fit in. I don't know.
04:26No, I mean, you being a grandfather, you can talk to other young cats who are first fathers,
04:32first-time fathers, talking about even as a grandfather, being able to inspire them.
04:38We can share what we've gone through and experienced our life journey because we've
04:43lived it as fathers. And something that has helped us and strengthened us on our journey
04:49as a father can strengthen and help some other young father or some other father who's struggling
04:54with just life challenges. And that's what I mean by iron sharpens iron, coming together,
05:00being inspired, being motivated, finding our self-worth and our purpose in life,
05:06and making sure even though you may not be with a mother, even though you may not be with a mother,
05:10your obligation is still to the children. And being there in that space and getting the support
05:16and the village coming together to build you up as a father, that's important.
05:21And if we can help one person, then this conference is a success already.
