00:00We go now to Caracas as our special envoy, Juno Zuner, brings us an update from the Bolivar
00:05Theater, where the second gathering for the World Social Alternative is taking place.
00:10Hello from the Bolivar Theater in the city center of Caracas, Venezuela, where the second
00:18World Social Alternative Convention has started.
00:22The Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of our America, Treaty of the Peoples, as well
00:28as the Simon Bolivar Institute have convened to this international meeting gathered here
00:35in the center of Caracas.
00:37Today on Tuesday and tomorrow on Wednesday, hundreds of experts and also activists and
00:43politicians from Latin America as well as other continents will discuss global issues
00:50such as constructing an alternative social order, fighting the interventions of imperialism
00:57and also media.
00:59So today's first session was about media, the role of media in imperialist attacks and
01:06forces of resistance.
01:08First spoke Jorge Arellaza, who is the executive secretary of the Bolivarian Alliance for the
01:16Peoples of our America.
01:18And he said that the upcoming elections in Venezuela do not take place between two candidates
01:23or different candidates, but between the homeland and imperialists.
01:28That is, Venezuelan people will choose the country, the patria, said Jorge Arellaza.
01:35After him spoke Patricia Villegas, who is the president of TeleSUR, our channel that
01:41will commemorate its 19th birthday tomorrow at the birthday of Simon Bolivar, the great
01:49founder and liberator of Venezuela as well.
01:53So Patricia Villegas said also, took up the topic of the elections and said that there
01:59will be a huge imperialistic media operation against the elections.
02:04She emphasized that first they will spread out illegal numbers about election results
02:13because the only legitimate authority here in Venezuela to announce any results is the
02:19National Election Council.
02:20But before that announces, they will spread news about results and international media
02:27will pick up these results, distribute them worldwide, and start a campaign of deinstitutionalization
02:37actually against the National Election Council here in Venezuela and the political system
02:43as a whole.
02:44Villegas called for three things against this.
02:49First, articulation.
02:50She said that every one of us, every individual is a media responsible as well, be it on social
02:57networks, be it working in media, and that one has to articulate himself or herself on
03:04all spaces available.
03:05Second, she called for a digital alphabetization, reminding that the social media networks currently
03:13available are not ours.
03:15They are dominated by imperial powers who manage them, who execute bans on politicians,
03:22who guide the discourses.
03:24So one needs to alphabetize the citizens how to follow, how to read social media news.
03:31And thirdly, Patricia Villegas also demanded or called for the creation of our own spaces.
03:38She reminded that China has WeChat, she reminded that Russia has created Telegram, and she
03:44said it's the duty of the Latin American countries to create its own independent space,
03:50virtual space also on social media, which she considers a matter of sovereignty actually,
03:57and also of liberty from imperial interventions.
04:00The convention will take place today on Tuesday and will continue on Wednesday with more speakers
04:07touching on topics of imperialistic intervention, creating alternatives, social movements, and
04:14better networking among each other.
