Transcript
00:00I'm going to take you on a sound journey using some of my favorite things.
00:30So I have Palo Santo, major key, it comes from a tree and it smells really good and
00:52it clears energy.
00:53I like to use it around the house or around my studio when I create good vibes, good good
01:13vibes.
01:14I'm from D.C., probably in North Carolina and I think I started making music when I
01:25was in North Carolina for real and out there I really learned how to connect with nature
01:32and be just a kid climbing in trees and shit, you know.
01:38And so that really comes through in my music and just who I am as a person, I love natural
01:46things and I love to find ways to connect with nature, it brings me peace.
01:53Some of my biggest musical inspirations are Janis Joplin, she was really far out, and
02:04Amy Winehouse, Nina Simone, all three of them have crazy voices and they were really
02:10great songwriters, producers, and then I love Tina Turner, she's awesome.
02:18She also was an influence to help me realize like just as important as being the artist
02:25it's important to be balanced and have like a sound mind and spirit, so shout out to her.
02:34Like the list goes on and on about who for real influenced me, but also my aunts and
02:42my mom, like they kind of influenced me more than anything else because they encouraged
02:50me to write my own music and produce, and play piano and things like that, you know.
03:00Shouts out to these folks in Peru.
03:10This is my favorite thing ever, it's my water bottle.
03:16And it's full.
03:21If anyone sees me without my water bottle you know I'm having a bad day.
03:32Because I am a little rose and I need to be hydrated at all times in order to be at peak performance.
03:44I don't like plastic because it's bad for all of the animals in the ocean, and it's
03:49bad for just the environment.
03:52But this little guy just keeps me like hydrated and it keeps everything cold.
03:59I know everybody has their faves but, you know.
04:05I just found her out one day and it was perfect because it's beige and it's just my vibe.
04:15Drink water, it's good for you.
04:20My sign, my sun sign is Leo, my rising is Aquarius, and my moon is Cancer.
04:30I think it fits me very well because when I found out I was a Leo, my dad's birthday
04:38is the day after mine, and he's like the biggest personality in the world.
04:42And I was just like, I don't really relate to all of that because sometimes I'm a big
04:46personality but most of the time I be chilling.
04:50And so then I found out I was a Cancer moon, which is like your emotions or whatever.
04:57And that more is my vibe, like I'm super emotional, I cry at movies.
05:03I cry a lot.
05:07I'm just very sensitive.
05:09And then Aquarius are like the oddball out of the group.
05:14And that's kind of how I, sometimes, I guess that's how I present myself.
05:19It's just more like, unique.
05:23And I kind of **** with that.
05:25So, yeah, those are my signs.
05:32My new EP, produced by BadBadNotGood, Slow Burn.
05:39It's an EP.
05:40It's light but it's heavy though.
05:43This is some of the rawest music I've ever made.
05:47We did it all on tape.
05:49I was in the booth, they were in the live room and we did it at the same time.
05:55It was just emotional.
06:00It was raw.
06:02It's unfiltered.
06:04And I'm really proud of that.
06:05And, you know, it's definitely sending me the way that I've always known I want to be.
06:15Just like, raw.
06:18And guitars and drums and just like, floating.
06:23I've always been that way on stage but now it's just like, taking it to tape is a new level.
06:30Because it's like, rehearsing as well as performing as well as just laying the damn song down.
06:37So, I'm already mentally there.
06:42Yeah.
06:44One of my favorite songs to perform live.
06:52For a long time, it was all to myself.
06:56Because it was like, a chance that I got to just be, break it down and be one on one with everybody.
07:04And kind of just, take off that mask and just be like, look, I know there are people out here that are hurting.
07:12And that need to, you know, walk away with something here.
07:16And I want you to walk away with this sense of love and pride.
07:23There was also the song, Power, that I had on my last album, Through and Through.
07:28Because I would get the audience to sing it with me.
07:31Like, love has the power to heal the whole wide world.
07:34And it'd be so precious to just be one sound.
07:38Singing that, I'm a firm believer in like, the power of words.
07:43And to speak affirmations, to speak things into existence.
07:49And so, having people walk away with that on their heart, it felt like I'm doing God's work with that.
07:55And so, I can't wait to perform Slow Burn.
07:59Because I feel like that's going to be an even more transcendent experience as well.
08:12She's full.
08:19I love to paint.
08:21It's like my favorite thing to do.
08:23That's how to make music.
08:27Let's have watercolors.
08:30Let's see how to open this thing.
08:33There she goes.
08:42All the pretty colors, you see that?
08:48I like watercolors because that's like, my medium of choice.
08:57We have new brushes, praise God.
09:04So yeah, this is a very nice book by the way.
09:11Very thick pages, we love that.
09:13Love to see it.
09:19So yeah, this is kind of what I do with my free time, low key.
09:27I go outside and I paint.
09:31I wish I knew how to speak every language ever.
09:36Because then I'd be able to talk to anybody.
09:39And it would be so awesome.
09:41I'd be able to understand everything.
09:44But I don't.
09:46I don't.
09:47I don't.
09:48I don't.
09:49I don't.
09:50I don't.
09:51I don't.
09:52I don't.
09:53I don't.
09:54I don't.
09:55I don't.
09:56I don't.
09:57I don't.
09:58Everything.
10:00But it's just...
10:01I don't know.
10:02It's so hard to learn all the things.
10:07But I'm learning, I'm doing my little duolingo, baby.
10:11One week at a time.
10:19If I won the lottery tomorrow, what is it at?
10:21Like a billion dollars?
10:23If I won the lottery tomorrow, what I would do first is pay off my mom's house in secret
10:32and then just surprise her and then she'd be like, oh my god, and I'd be like, great.
10:36And then the second thing I would do, or the, like, the, I'm mad, you know what I'm saying,
10:42like, what I for real would do probably would be like book a date at the craziest bar ever,
10:52ever.
10:53And then just go and like have a ball, have a ball, dog, it'd be great.
11:06Chapstick is so essential to life, okay, to my life.
11:14Oh shit, I should be on my mic.
11:21This is classic, it don't get better than this, baby.
11:25No flavors, we don't need the additives, the preservatives.
11:32ASMR.
11:34That's not making a sound, but it's okay, it protects your lips, yeah, always keep that
12:00thing on me.
12:05You see how pleasant that is, like, hold on, I gotta put it back in there, wow, so, yeah,
12:15love Chapstick.
12:16I think the most surreal moment in my career so far was probably making a project with
12:25Bad, Bad, Not Good, the very first day that we met, okay, I wasn't even supposed to make
12:30any music.
12:31Shout out Freddie Gibbs, he didn't show up to a session, and I took that as an opportunity,
12:40I played them some music, and they were like, okay, let's make something, let's just try
12:45something.
12:46And we ended up making One Last Dance, and Another Record, It's Alright, that same day,
12:53and both of those are on the project.
12:55And so, yeah, man, it was just, it was magic from there, like, I always knew if we were
13:03to make something, it would be crazy, but I didn't know just how easy it would be, and
13:10just the chemistry was just there, like, we did both of those songs in five hours, and
13:15it was my first time on tape, too, so it was just, like, meant to be, so that was pretty
13:22surreal for me.
13:24My best self-love advice would be to keep it simple in all areas of your life.
13:32Sometimes, we tend to overcomplicate things, and we feel like we need to know all the answers,
13:40and that we're not enough, and all of the things just start to compile, and it just
13:44gets really big and scary, but, no, that's when you just need to go outside, take your
13:53shoes off, put your feet in the grass, and just be like, breathe, and just be like, man,
13:59it's so cool to be a human being, like, this is kind of cool, right, yeah, and then you're
14:07back at ground zero, and treat yourself like how you treat your friends, the people you
14:15love, like, don't be so hard on yourself, you're just a little being at the end of the
14:20day, just floating in the ocean, you're just a little being, and you should be very gentle
14:27with yourself, that's what I would say.
14:31Thank you so much for coming to my mind massage, and make sure you check out my EP, produced
14:38by BadBadNotGood, Slow Burn.
14:44Beautiful, that was great, thank you so, so much.
