00:00 (air whooshing)
00:02 Hey, it's Agnes Mo.
00:08 Welcome to my mind massage.
00:11 G-N-E-C-M-O.
00:25 I'm going to take you through my sound journey
00:30 using some of my favorite things.
00:33 (tongue clicking)
00:37 So I'm gonna start with my favorite candle of all time.
00:50 So mind this, I'm a candle girl,
00:54 meaning I light candles everywhere I go.
00:57 So this is called Champagne Toast.
01:04 It says bubbly champagne,
01:08 bright berries, juicy tangerine.
01:12 Okay, I'm gonna light it up.
01:23 (lighter clicking)
01:26 Oh, you can even hear it burning.
01:29 (lighter clicking)
01:34 Yeah, I always light it up in my room.
01:51 I, you know, whenever I host any guest in my apartment,
01:56 I always try to set up the mood for them
01:59 so that it's like a vibe, you know?
02:03 And this is like, I think I probably have five of these
02:07 in my dining room.
02:09 Five, four, five candles.
02:13 So yeah.
02:16 It's a white barn champagne toast.
02:21 There you go.
02:23 I am from this amazing city called Jakarta, Indonesia.
02:28 We have so many different instruments,
02:33 culture, diversity is kind of like a part of my life.
02:38 So, you know, we have people with like the most pale skin
02:46 in the West area to like the darkest skin tone
02:51 in the East, more like the Eastern area of Indonesia.
02:54 So that's the reason why if you see my tattoo over here,
02:58 it's actually the Sanskrit for (speaking in foreign language)
03:05 So (speaking in foreign language)
03:06 is like the country's motto
03:09 and it actually means unity in diversity.
03:13 So that's what's cool about my country.
03:16 Wow.
03:16 I started singing at church when I was three years old
03:22 and I released my first album when I was six years old.
03:28 Of course, of course I have to release my album
03:31 when I was six years old.
03:32 And then after that, I started acting
03:38 when I was probably nine or 10 years old.
03:41 I won my first professional actress award,
03:46 acting award when I was, I believe 13 years old
03:50 as the best actress.
03:53 But honestly speaking, music is like my shit.
03:58 Music is like my passion.
04:02 So after a while, I think when I was probably 22 or 23,
04:08 I stopped acting and I just focused on my music.
04:13 I still like infuse a lot of my acting skills
04:15 in my music videos and how I produce my vocals in my songs.
04:20 But yeah, I started really young.
04:27 Should I blow this?
04:28 - Yeah.
04:36 - So the reason why I chose this perfume
04:40 is because there is an interesting story behind it.
04:45 Well, long story short, I missed my connecting flight
04:50 in Narita Airport and so that's in Japan.
04:56 I think there was like a language barrier
04:58 or something like that.
04:58 I went to the information desk.
05:01 I asked one of the ladies,
05:03 "Hey, where's the gate for this flight?
05:07 "What time is boarding time?"
05:09 And she said, "5 p.m."
05:11 So obviously I'm like chilling at the lounge
05:14 and then at five, I went to the gate and nobody was there.
05:18 And so I asked, excuse me,
05:21 "The flight to LA, where's the gate?"
05:25 "Here, but the plane just left."
05:27 And I'm like, "Wait, no, the boarding time is five.
05:31 "No, the boarding time is 4.30."
05:34 So basically I decided to just live in the moment
05:39 and stay in Japan for at least two days
05:43 before I flew back to LA.
05:46 And in Harajuku, so Harajuku, Shibuya, Shinjuku
05:49 are like the most famous streets in Japan, right?
05:53 And in Harajuku, there's this store,
05:55 it's a perfume store, Maison Margella,
05:59 and you can custom stuff there.
06:03 And here, you could see it.
06:07 It says, "Actisbo Tokyo 2023."
06:14 So yeah, we can only get this in Japan.
06:19 I'm gonna spray this, hopefully not to the microphone.
06:26 It says the fragrance description, grapes and roses.
06:31 One of my most favorite perfume.
06:37 Yes.
06:48 Yep, it actually called "On a Date with Actisbo,"
06:56 which is what you're doing right now.
06:58 I think all of my favorite songs came from
07:02 when I was in the studio without the pressure
07:07 of trying to make a hit.
07:09 "Overdose" is just like, it's a very personal song.
07:15 And I think the way that it came about
07:19 is also very interesting because, you know,
07:23 we just decided on recording a lot of songs
07:26 and wrote a lot of songs in the span of three to four weeks
07:31 in the studio.
07:32 You know, when we were recording,
07:35 we didn't even know that we were gonna put out an album
07:37 or a single or any song at all.
07:40 We were just there in the moment.
07:43 And I think that's the beauty of being an artist.
07:46 Once you take off the pressure of trying to be perfect
07:53 or trying to write something
07:58 for the sake of an album release,
08:01 I think you can just be in the moment and be an artist.
08:06 So "Overdose" is one of those,
08:10 you know, one of the products of us just being in the moment
08:15 and trying to create whatever we wanted to create.
08:23 So,
08:23 if I could choose only one item for my makeup,
08:35 it definitely would be my blush.
08:39 And this is my favorite blush.
08:44 Look at that.
08:52 It's like kind of peachy.
08:55 It has that like shimmery,
08:57 which is what I'm actually wearing right now.
09:00 And,
09:02 I always like to kind of
09:10 make a little like sunburn effect.
09:15 But yeah, this is my most favorite item.
09:20 (blender whirring)
09:23 Okay.
09:28 So this is the lip liner.
09:31 And by the way, do you know that the trend of the lip flip,
09:36 that sometimes people use Botox to do lip flip?
09:40 So I try to do,
09:41 I try to imitate the lip flip by using this.
09:48 The next one is the lip,
09:51 I don't know if this is like a lipstick.
09:54 It's a very pigmented,
09:58 tinted lip gloss.
10:00 Sorry.
10:05 It's blush glow.
10:09 Oh, there you go.
10:10 Blush glow.
10:17 And I always try to just dab it
10:20 so that it could just give me that natural look.
10:25 If I want a little bit more pinkish tone,
10:38 then this is my favorite.
10:40 Fenty Beauty Heat in
10:43 Fuzzy
10:46 Heat.
10:48 I almost misread that.
10:50 Yeah, so this is more
10:58 like liquid-based.
11:01 Again, I always try not to like put too much.
11:09 And just like the center of my lips.
11:17 There you go.
11:18 So yeah.
11:24 These are my favorite things.
11:28 What my fans can expect from me, always.
11:37 The real me.
11:39 And I know that it sounds cliche,
11:43 but especially my closest friends,
11:47 they know my journey to me finding my own voice,
11:52 if that makes sense.
11:53 Being like an immigrant,
11:58 like moving from thousands of miles away
12:02 10 years ago to the United States.
12:06 I mean, there was still, it's different.
12:08 People back then didn't accept
12:13 varieties and diversity like it is today.
12:18 And I still remember all the conversations
12:21 that I had with the executives of labels
12:25 or even producers that I worked with.
12:28 I could still remember that feeling of
12:32 do I belong here or not?
12:36 'Cause people would look at you,
12:38 oh, like this petite little Asian girl,
12:43 like what does she have to offer?
12:46 And mind this, I was already super big in Asia,
12:50 but it was like a different time.
12:51 10, 12 years ago is so different,
12:54 especially with the genre of music that I'm doing.
12:57 Thank God now people are championing us being ourselves.
13:04 Diversities.
13:08 I remember I had to convince myself
13:13 that the key to success is not what you say yes to,
13:17 but it's what you say no to.
13:19 And it's very important because sometimes
13:22 when you're pressured in an environment
13:27 that at first you don't even feel like you belong there,
13:31 you could be pressured to compromising a lot of things.
13:35 And then at the end, you're gonna lose yourself.
13:37 And I remember I had to say no to some of,
13:41 probably some things that look like amazing offers,
13:47 but I had to sacrifice and sacrifice myself.
13:51 I had to compromise losing myself.
13:53 And I had to say no to millions of dollars
13:58 or being signed to certain labels.
14:01 But I'm so happy that I did that.
14:05 I don't have any regret whatsoever.
14:08 I am me.
14:09 I will always be me.
14:10 And I will always try to show my fans my version of me
14:15 instead of other people's version of me.
14:20 I'm Agnes Mo.
14:21 Thank you so much for coming to my mind massage.
14:24 - Perfect.
14:29 That is a cut.
14:30 - Yay.
14:31 (electronic beeping)
