00:00:00Can you believe it? There are two different ways to drink juice from a juice box. The
00:00:05first way is the default one, and the second is to flip the straw over so that its shorter
00:00:10side sits at the bottom of the box. Using the first method, you may have difficulty
00:00:15getting the last sips of liquid because the straw can't reach all the corners properly.
00:00:21Some straws have their bottom corner sharper than the top. It's deliberately designed
00:00:26that way to pierce through the seal. That's why some people believe the right way to
00:00:30drink juice is the conventional one. Now let's continue with straws. Do you know
00:00:35there's a correct way to use a straw while drinking from a can of soda?
00:00:40So you're about to have some coke. You pop the tab open, then you put a straw in the
00:00:44can. Now you need to make a constant effort to keep the straw steady. See this hole in
00:00:50the top? Yeah! Turn the pop tab around and put your straw through the hole. It'll serve
00:00:55as a straw holder. No need to be annoyed by the tipping straw.
00:01:00So what's the best way to eat a cupcake? Turn it into a sandwich. Step 1. Peel off
00:01:06the paper wrapped around the cupcake. Step 2. Carefully divide the cake into two parts.
00:01:12Step 3. Put the bottom side of the cupcake on top of the frosting. This is how you eat
00:01:17a cupcake like a pro. Okay, another quick word about cakes. People
00:01:23generally use kitchen knives to cut cakes into two parts. But you can use dental floss.
00:01:29Take a piece of floss and wrap it around the cake horizontally. Hold the ends tight with
00:01:33both hands and pull them in opposite directions. There you go, now you have an evenly cut cake.
00:01:40Smooth, huh? You can use floss to cut through a cake vertically
00:01:43too. This way, you'll reduce the chance of messing up the frosting.
00:01:48Do you use your fingers to dip your Oreos in milk? Try using a fork. Stick it between
00:01:53the wafers vertically and dip the cookie in milk. Well, you try it. I'm sticking with
00:01:58my fingers. Been doing it all my life. Call me a rebel.
00:02:03You put your food in the microwave. The plate is hot and the upper part of the dish is steaming.
00:02:08You start eating. Oh no, not again. Your meal hasn't heated evenly. If you want your dish
00:02:14to be equally warm, arrange it in a donut shape and leave an empty spot in the center.
00:02:20The middle part of your dish takes longer to heat up. By the time the center warms up,
00:02:24the edges might be overheated. Sometimes, you need to microwave two bowls
00:02:29of food at the same time. In this case, you can try placing the second bowl on top of
00:02:34a cup. This will give you free space for the second bowl. Creative solutions for small
00:02:40microwaves! Better to secure the cup first though. Cleaning
00:02:44the splashed food will take more time than using this method.
00:02:48To save space, you should roll your clothes instead of folding them when packing. They
00:02:52don't get creased when you roll them. Plus, they take less space this way.
00:02:57Okay, we might as well continue with another packing trick. After rolling your clothes,
00:03:02pack them in your suitcase vertically, not horizontally. Your clothes will fit better
00:03:06into the bag, and you'll have more room for other essential stuff.
00:03:12Drinking iced coffee is a great way to cool your body on a summer day. Sadly, the ice
00:03:16cubes start to dilute the coffee pretty soon, changing the taste of the drink. To avoid
00:03:22this, you can freeze some coffee into ice cubes beforehand. This way, your iced coffee
00:03:27won't get watered down. It turns out that taking a shower too often
00:03:32isn't good for your hair. Experts say you should wash your hair 2-3 times a week because
00:03:38overwashing can result in extra oil in your hair.
00:03:43Do you know there's a correct way to fit salami on a toast properly? Yeah, there's
00:03:47a geometry problem. Toast bread is square, but salami is mostly round. You can, of course,
00:03:53do it in a traditional way – by putting two slices next to each other. But then the
00:03:58edges of your sandwich won't have any filling. All you need to do is to cut the slices in
00:04:03half. Next, you line the straight pieces with the sides of the toast. You get four
00:04:08slices covering the entire piece of bread. Most people peel bananas starting from the
00:04:14top, but this way, you squeeze the fruit. The best way to peel a banana is to start
00:04:20from the bottom. Hey, take a closer look at monkeys – apparently, they figured this
00:04:24out a long time ago. Do you want to have more space in the closet
00:04:29where you store your cleaning supplies? Then this one is for you. You can hang spray bottles
00:04:34on a clothing rod – it's convenient. You can find those rods online or in stores. This
00:04:40way, you'll keep your cleaning sprays organized. Also, this method leaves more cupboard space
00:04:46for other cleaning supplies. There's a right way to hold a burger. Grab
00:04:51it with both hands. Now place your little fingers at the bottom next to your thumb for
00:04:55extra support. You want to cross out miswritten words? You can draw a line on top of them,
00:05:02but in most cases, you can still read the words. Instead of scribbling some lines, just
00:05:07write a bunch of random letters on the top of the word you want to cross out. Problem
00:05:12solved! What is the best way to cut crusty bread?
00:05:17By turning the loaf upside down. The underside of the bread is usually softer than the top,
00:05:23but try not to squeeze the bread too much. The traditional way to drain pasta is to place
00:05:29the colander in the sink. After that, you drain the water and put your pasta back in
00:05:33the pan. But this method isn't the most effective. Sometimes, pasta gets into the
00:05:38holes of the colander. The second option is less difficult. Place the colander into the
00:05:44pot and, while holding them together, drain the water. This way, you don't have to move
00:05:49your pasta from the pot. This trick works best if your colander fits your pot. If you
00:05:55don't want to buy several colanders, you can still use this method, but you should
00:05:59be more careful during the draining process. Does your freezer ever spoil food? You put
00:06:06ready meals and groceries in the freezer. Two weeks later, you'll open it only to
00:06:10find your food freezer burnt. There are two reasons for this. First, you stock your freezer
00:06:16with too much stuff. Overloading can block the vent. Then the air inside the freezer
00:06:22won't circulate properly. The second reason might be the wrong temperature. The recommended
00:06:27freezer temperature is 0°F or a bit lower. What's the best way to hold a steering wheel?
00:06:35Most people clutch it at 12 o'clock, 2 o'clock, and 10 o'clock. This is not very safe, even
00:06:40if you have three arms. For those of us with just two arms, the proper way to grab the
00:06:45wheel is to put one hand at 3 o'clock and the other at 9 o'clock. It means placing
00:06:51your hands where the joints are, in case you need to give way to airbags. Holding the wheel
00:06:56differently prevents them from fully inflating. Toblerone is a fancy chocolate bar, but did
00:07:02you know there's a correct technique to break off pieces of this chocolate? Just push
00:07:08the triangle you want to separate toward the rest of the bar. Who would've thought?
00:07:13Pringles are another hard-to-eat but delicious thing. While trying to dig a piece out of
00:07:18the can, don't shove your whole hand in there. Instead, use a sheet of paper. Fold it lengthwise
00:07:24and slide it into the can. Then gently pull it out, together with Pringles. Now you have
00:07:30a tray of crispy goodness! If you ever find yourself stuck in the trunk
00:07:35of your car, stay calm. All cars are supposed to be equipped with an emergency latch to
00:07:41help open the trunk from the inside in the unlikely case it happens. These latches are
00:07:46so well thought out that they can be opened by people of all ages. More so, handles are
00:07:51designed to glow in the dark, too. You can even pull them with the mouth if there's
00:07:56not enough wiggle room to use your hands. Never mind how you ended up in the trunk in
00:08:00the first place. Moving on…
00:08:02If you're ever working with needle and thread, remember you don't need to stick the needle
00:08:07directly into the spool. You may end up losing the needle altogether. Not to mention you
00:08:12can easily hurt your fingers! A lot of modern sewing kits these days come
00:08:17with a designated place for safeguarding the needles. It's located at the bottom part
00:08:22of the thread spool. You'll just need to pull it out. It's even made to hold multiple
00:08:26sewing needles at a time. Disposable ballpoint pens come with a little
00:08:31secret of their own. Did you ever notice that in some of them, there's a small hole in
00:08:36the plastic part? It's actually a rudimentary ventilation system. It's supposed to let
00:08:42the ink easily make it to the tip of the pen. Okay, I know it's in the name, but you really
00:08:48don't need to shake the seasoning shaker to get any product out. Don't believe me?
00:08:53Hey, you're not the only one! Go grab your favorite seasoning bottle out
00:08:57of your pantry. If it has one of those removable plastic caps, it's perfect for the experiment.
00:09:03Instead of shaking the bottle, try holding it from the plastic cap while it's upside
00:09:08down. Now gently twist the bottle from side to side and, before you know it, you get some
00:09:14gorgeously flowing seasoning without having to wiggle the shaker and make a mess all over
00:09:19the stove. On the same note, most salt and pepper shakers
00:09:23should have ridges on the bottom of the glass portion. In case you get any seasoning stuck
00:09:28in there, place the bottom of the salt shaker against the bottom of the pepper shaker and
00:09:33wiggle it around so the ridges click with each other. The seasoning should easily pour
00:09:38out now without you having to open the bottle. In colder weather, you often have so many
00:09:44clothing layers on you that you can hardly feel the purse or back straps on your shoulder
00:09:49anymore. Not to mention how fast they can slide off. Some jackets come with a built-in
00:09:54solution for that, in the form of a small tab on the shoulder with either a hook or
00:09:59a button. It's meant to be opened and closed comfortably, so you can keep your purse in
00:10:04place at any time. You're most likely using it merely to peel
00:10:09the skin of potatoes, carrots, or cucumbers. But you can use your vegetable peeler for
00:10:15chopping fine strips of onion as well. Just cut the onion into quarters vertically and
00:10:20then start slicing. This might also help out with those embarrassing onion tears.
00:10:26Most people miss this one, but should you ever have a closer look at your toothpaste
00:10:31tube, you will surely see some sort of coloring there – either a dot or a block. Colors
00:10:37can vary – they can be black, green, red, or even blue. These color spots are actually
00:10:43meant to help the assembly machines back at the toothpaste factory. They recognize when
00:10:47and where these machines need to cut the toothpaste tubes and proceed to fold them
00:10:51for packaging. For most types of footwear, if there's anything
00:10:55that seems a bit out of place, always know that it's there for a reason. Most manufacturers
00:11:01don't put extra items on shoes just for fun – it would definitely be a waste of
00:11:05time and resources. For footwear like boots, for example, there's
00:11:10often a small loop at the top back of the shoe. It's there to help you when you need
00:11:14to put the shoe on since you can quickly pull on it. Plus, you can also hang the shoes
00:11:20somewhere, most likely to dry, since most boots are meant to be worn in the colder weather.
00:11:25Now I've been guilty at least once of overdressing with a bunch of layers just so I won't need
00:11:31to jam everything in my check-in bag. But does it become a problem when you actually
00:11:36have to get seated? What do you do with your coat or your jacket? Well, have a closer look
00:11:41next time you board a plane on the seat in front of you. The hook that keeps the tray
00:11:46table upright can double as a jacket hook. As long as you don't need to have any meals
00:11:51while in the air, you're good to go. Most mascaras expire within 3-6 months, I'm
00:11:58told, depending on the manufacturer. But you can help speed up that process if you're
00:12:03not careful enough. Continuously pumping the mascara wand, trying to mix in the product
00:12:08actually pushes more air into the tube. This can make it dry much faster, and you evidently
00:12:14won't get the desired results with it anymore. There's an easy way to check if your mascara
00:12:19is still good enough to use. If you don't hear a popping noise when you take the brush
00:12:24out, you may very well need to go get yourself a new mascara tube.
00:12:30Now I know we're living in the era of Bluetooth-connected devices, but for better quality sound, they
00:12:36still recommend using headphones that connect via audio jacks. Remember seeing black ridges
00:12:42on those jacks? They aren't there just to make them fit when you plug them into your
00:12:46phone or laptop. Made out of a special insulating material, these bands are meant to guard the
00:12:52wires when sound is being transmitted. Based on the number of bands, you can figure out
00:12:57which end goes where. Some empty space under noodles in a cup doesn't mean the company
00:13:02producing them wants to cheat you out of a full portion. No, no! It's a manner of
00:13:07keeping the noodles intact during their transportation. It also helps with the circulation of hot
00:13:12water that is poured over the products before you can enjoy them.
00:13:17The V-shaped neckline was initially designed to serve a bunch of objectives. First, as
00:13:22a way of prolonging the life of the garment that would maintain its shape over the years.
00:13:27It's also there to fit your head through the shirt in case it needs some stretching.
00:13:31This way, it ensures a snugger grip around the neck. Lastly, it helps absorb sweat in
00:13:37case you're wearing the shirt while exercising.
00:13:39Now, it's not necessarily a custom anymore, but you may have stumbled upon a dinner jacket
00:13:45with an additional mysterious pocket on the right side. Turns out, this pocket was used
00:13:50by men to easily reach their train tickets since most of them had to travel to work every
00:13:56day. It helped them keep their jacket buttoned up but also benefited from the use of a pocket.
00:14:01Now, it's only added as a decoration, and it doesn't serve an actual purpose anymore.
00:14:07Speaking of things we don't use these days, or at least for their initial purpose, did
00:14:12you know Play-Doh was originally a cleaning product? In the 1920s, the market was in need
00:14:18of a product that could help them wipe the wallpapered areas around coal-burning furnaces.
00:14:24The recipe for what we now know as Play-Doh was thus invented. It was manufactured in
00:14:29white only and was supposed to clean wallpaper by being rolled back and forth over the dirt.
00:14:35It was only later, in the 1940s, that new products for cleaning wallpaper were brought
00:14:40up, and Play-Doh was redirected toward another area of the market.
00:14:45Now, while I enjoy a nice piece of toast for breakfast, isn't it pesky to have to clean
00:14:51out the toaster? Well, not anymore, since I recently found out that toasters have a
00:14:56slide or a panel at the bottom that helps get rid of all those annoying breadcrumbs
00:15:01easily.
00:15:03Now, there used to be a time when you could only have access to video games by inserting
00:15:10cartridges in your console of choice. These tiny objects gave many doctors a lot of headaches.
00:15:16People soon started popping up in hospitals after swallowing small game cartridges, especially
00:15:22the younger generation. Nintendo, the company that manufactures the majority of these devices,
00:15:28had to come up with a creative solution to prevent these accidents. So, these days, Nintendo
00:15:33Switch cartridges are purposely coated with specific chemicals that can leave a really
00:15:39bad bitter taste in the mouth. Not that I'd, you know, recommend you ever try and taste
00:15:44for yourself.
00:15:46Black stripes on yellow school buses aren't an element of design. They're actually metal
00:15:51rails put along the sides and the back of the bus to protect its rather thin walls.
00:15:57In case of a collision, they absorb most of its force. It means that the crash doesn't
00:16:02affect large areas. These rub rails are also positioned in strategically important spots.
00:16:08The lowest one runs at the floor level, the middle one matches the bottom of the seats,
00:16:13and the top one corresponds either to the top of the seats or the bottom of the window.
00:16:19Your ceiling fan can move in more than one direction for a reason. One is for summer,
00:16:24the other for winter. When the weather is hot, ceiling fans should move counterclockwise.
00:16:30This makes them pull the warm air up and push the cold air down. And the clockwise, winter
00:16:35mode, moves the warm air down and raises the cool air.
00:16:41As soon as you notice the blue bristles on your toothbrush start fading, it's a sure
00:16:45sign it's time to replace it.
00:16:49You can adjust your stapler so that it staples documents together only temporarily. It's
00:16:54done by rotating the crimp area. Most staplers have two options for stapling. One is standard,
00:17:00but the other side bends staples away from the center. Later, when you don't need them
00:17:05anymore, you can easily remove them by hand.
00:17:10Lots of people use a knife to remove strawberry stems. But this way, they throw away a lot
00:17:15of stuff they could otherwise eat. Instead of a knife, use a regular drinking straw.
00:17:20Insert one end of the straw into the bottom of the strawberry and push it gently all the
00:17:25way through. If everything goes as planned, the straw will pop the stem out.
00:17:31A tiny hole in a padlock bottom helps to drain the water from an outside lock after the rain.
00:17:37It prevents the thing from rusting and clogging. You can also use this hole to oil the lock's
00:17:42hinges so that it doesn't get stuck. If a lock doesn't have this small hole, you
00:17:47should only use it inside.
00:17:51It's a bad idea to place dirty dishes covered in mashed potatoes or any other leftover carbs
00:17:57closer to the sides of the bottom shelf of your dishwasher. Several studies have shown
00:18:02that such plates get washed better when you put them in the middle of the rack. So now
00:18:06you know.
00:18:08Weird markings on the bottom of a toothpaste tube have nothing to do with the ingredients.
00:18:13They're actually there for the factory robots. Not so they can brush their own teeth either.
00:18:18Such a colorful square marks the line where the tube has to be cut and folded.
00:18:25Most cotton pads have two different textures on each of their sides. One surface is firmer
00:18:30and more absorbent. It's supposed to be used with nail polish remover. The other side is
00:18:35way finer and softer. You should use it to remove facial and eye makeup.
00:18:42Don't peel post-it notes off from the bottom. It'll create a crease in the paper, and the
00:18:46note won't stick well after that. Tear it off from the side, and it'll stick longer.
00:18:53When driving when it's already dark, you might get blinded by the headlights of the car moving
00:18:58behind yours. If you have a manual rear-view mirror, find a tab at the bottom and flip
00:19:03it. The mirror has a reflective material behind its glass. By flipping the tab, you change
00:19:09the angle of this material, dimming the lights in the mirror. The whole process is even simpler
00:19:15if you have a power mirror. All you need to do is switch on the nighttime mode.
00:19:21Bath foam relieves stress, cleanses the skin, and keeps the water warm. Foam is made up
00:19:28of tiny air bottles. They form an insulating layer on the water surface, keeping the heat
00:19:33from escaping. Let's say you're reading a paper book.
00:19:38Then you decide to take a break and realize you don't have a bookmark. Should you leave
00:19:43a dog ear? You don't need to. That's what the dust jacket is for. Apparently, providing
00:19:49you with the information about the book and its author isn't its only purpose.
00:19:55Your stomach growls, and suddenly, a peanut butter sandwich sounds like a great idea.
00:20:01You open a jar and see quite a lot of oil sitting on the top. Duh! Time to train your
00:20:07arm muscles and stir, stir, stir! But if you store peanut butter jars upside down, the
00:20:14oil will move to the bottom, and all the solids will be on top.
00:20:19The main purpose of the drawer under your oven isn't to store all those pots and pans.
00:20:25You're supposed to use this place to keep your food warm while something else is being
00:20:29prepared in the oven. If you don't have anywhere to put a toothpick
00:20:34after using it, snap off the flat end at the first groove and put it on the table. Now
00:20:40you can balance the used part of your toothpick on the grooved part, so it doesn't have
00:20:44to touch the table. The correct way to break off a piece of Toblerone
00:20:49chocolate bar is by pushing the pointy side downward. Me? I just bite it off, but then
00:20:56I'm hardly ever accused of being correct. Most extension cords are known to come undone
00:21:02at even the slightest pull. Loosely tie them together, and they'll stay connected even
00:21:08if you accidentally pull on them. The knot might get tighter, but nothing will get switched
00:21:13off. A little groove on the bottom of a cup lets
00:21:17cool air get underneath it. It saves glassware from cracking when a scorching beverage heats
00:21:23it up. And when you place cups upside down in the dishwasher, the groove prevents water
00:21:29from gathering in the cup's bottoms. Non-stick pans have a special coating, which
00:21:35makes them so great. But if you use metal utensils while dealing with such a pan, you're
00:21:41likely to scratch this coating, and once you do it, your pan is ruined. Food will stick
00:21:46to its surface and end up burned or unevenly cooked.
00:21:53Make your life brighter and get a Brightside tea! Pick your own print, just follow the
00:21:57link below. If you've always peeled bananas, starting
00:22:00from the stem, try doing it the other way around. Pinch the bottom of the banana and
00:22:06pull. This way, you don't have to deal with strings and mess. By the way, that's the
00:22:11approach monkeys use. And you don't want to argue with monkeys.
00:22:17Most caps on small tubes are hollow on top and have a little spike inside. Its purpose
00:22:22is to break the foil sticker sealing the tube. The neck of the tube fits right in this hole,
00:22:28and the spike is designed to break the seal. No need to struggle, try to tear the tiny
00:22:33foil seal off with your fingers. The more detergent you use, the cleaner your
00:22:38clothes are, right? Not exactly. If you add too much detergent, you can spoil your things.
00:22:45This will produce too many suds, and your clothes won't be rubbing against one another.
00:22:50And that's exactly what helps them get clean. Excess suds can also keep your washing machine
00:22:55from rinsing properly. Book pages are often printed on large sheets
00:23:00of paper, rather than on small individual ones. If there isn't enough content to fill
00:23:05these sheets, there are blank pages left. Publishers often print the words notes or
00:23:11leave some other signs on them. This way readers don't think it's a printing mistake.
00:23:17The rumble strips on the side of the road are supposed to wake up sleepy drivers who
00:23:21start to doze off behind the wheel. When your tires drift off onto these strips, the noise
00:23:27and vibration work like an alarm clock. It's a popular misconception that pumping
00:23:33a mascara wand back and forth allows more product to stay on it. In reality, doing this
00:23:39will only spoil your mascara. By moving the wand, you push air inside the tube. This not
00:23:46only produces flakes and clumps, but also makes the mascara dry out.
00:23:52A dime-sized hole in the elevator doors is a keyhole. If the doors get stuck, an operator
00:23:58can open them manually by inserting a special key in this hole. The same tool is used when
00:24:03an elevator needs routine maintenance. The bubbles in your soda push the straw up
00:24:10when they balance the buoyancy with the mass of the straw. But you can keep your straw
00:24:14from rising in your soda can by putting it through the hole in the metal pull ring. Ah,
00:24:20the science behind soda cans! Those squares of fabric that come with clothes
00:24:26are for you to try out your cleaning products on them first. This way, you won't ruin
00:24:30the entire item once you decide to wash it. The soft round part under a soda bottle cap
00:24:37keeps the bubbles from escaping. Without it, your pop would go flat in no time, probably
00:24:42even before you buy it. And what's worse, if you bought the flat drink for your dad,
00:24:48then your pop's pop won't pop. The utility knife is supposed to last way
00:24:54longer than most people think. The knife blade is made of narrow parallel sections.
00:24:59When the instrument gets blunt, break off the top section with the cap you can find
00:25:04at the bottom. Voila! You have a brand new sharp blade again. But don't forget to put
00:25:09on a pair of safety gloves and goggles before doing this. Yes, it's another sharp tip from
00:25:16Bright Side!
00:25:18Have you ever wondered what these extra holes at the top of your running shoes are for?
00:25:23They're designed so that you can tie the shoes in multiple different ways. That's useful
00:25:28when you want to compensate for things such as a bad stride or even a damaged toe. Plus,
00:25:34you can change the look of your shoes the way you prefer.
00:25:40Many people use a dust jacket of their book as a bookmarker. No problem with that, it
00:25:45will save your book from bent page corners. But the primary purpose of a dust cover is
00:25:50to keep the book safe from distortions. For instance, if you spill juice or drop some
00:25:55of the food on your book while reading it.
00:25:59The Tic Tac dispenser has this little groove on its top, so you can dispense only one Tic
00:26:04Tac at a time. Even though, let's be honest here, nobody does that. Most of us just spill
00:26:09a whole bunch at once and then we wiggle all those extra Tic Tacs back in.
00:26:16Those rubber bumps you see between the tire treads are there for your safety. The raised
00:26:20edges tell you what the minimum height of your tread is. If the bump and the edges are
00:26:25even, it's time for you to visit the tire shop as soon as possible. But if the bumps
00:26:31are well beneath the level of the edges, you're good to go.
00:26:36What about that black grating on the microwave window? It's something called a Faraday shield.
00:26:42And it's there to prevent microwaves from getting away and turning the entire room into
00:26:46a Faraday cage. If the microwaves escape, your meal won't cook properly either. So
00:26:52yep, the cage is not there to make it difficult for you to see your meal while it's cooking.
00:26:56It's keeping the electromagnetic energy inside.
00:27:01How about a wrench-compatible screwdriver? Cover your screwdriver with the end of your
00:27:06wrench and you can increase its torque. That's why the head of your screwdriver is designed
00:27:10the way it is. When you have odd angles, you can use this strategy.
00:27:17You've probably heard those myths, the blue side of the eraser can erase the pen. False.
00:27:22Its purpose is to erase a pencil, but in case you're writing something on heavier paper.
00:27:28The blue side can remove smudges you see after using the pink eraser too.
00:27:34Have you ever wondered why oranges in supermarkets mostly come in the red mesh bag? It's a trick
00:27:40to make this food look more orange and encourage you to make a purchase. An extra tip, don't
00:27:45throw away the mesh bag. Tie it up so you can have a small pot scrubber to clean your
00:27:50sink, kitchen, appliances, and dishes.
00:27:56You can see golf balls don't have a perfectly round shape. Their surface is covered with
00:28:00many little dimples, something golf balls didn't always have. At one point, experienced
00:28:05golfers started noticing how through time, older balls with imperfections, such as nicks
00:28:12and bumps, could travel further. Such things create turbulence in the air around the golf
00:28:18ball, which eventually reduces drag. So, manufacturers started producing balls with dimples so they
00:28:25could go farther and faster.
00:28:29You might have noticed that sometimes there are ridges in toothpick tops. It's more hygienic
00:28:33because when you break that off, you can prop the toothpick up on it, and it won't touch
00:28:38anything.
00:28:41Another safety feature you'll find, this time in your car, is a tab on your rear-view mirror.
00:28:47With it, you can change the position of the mirror so you don't get blinded if there's
00:28:51a car behind you with its high beams on. So this little tab helps you control the glare
00:28:56of lights coming from behind. This feature showed up in the 1930s, but in the early 1970s,
00:29:03it became a part of standard equipment in most trucks and cars.
00:29:08Do you see that tiny hole on your iPhone right next to the rear-facing camera? It's a microphone,
00:29:14and it's there so your phone can record sound as you turn your camera around.
00:29:21Some cables have a thick cylinder towards the end of the cord. It's called a ferrite
00:29:26core, or a choke. It's a magnetic iron oxide that stops high-frequency electromagnetic
00:29:31interference. For example, you know that annoying static noise you get if you bring
00:29:37your phone too close to a speaker? This interrupts your call, which is why cable cords with big
00:29:42cylinders are pretty useful, because they prevent these things.
00:29:48Do you know why nearly all luggage bags and backpacks have two zippers? It's way more
00:29:53convenient and easier to open in that way. But not just that, you can also lock these
00:29:58two zippers together to keep the stuff inside your bags safer.
00:30:04You know how toilets at public spots like malls have those big gaps at the bottom? It's
00:30:09primarily for better circulation of air. This type of door also makes it easier to clean
00:30:14the toilet or check if it's occupied if you're standing in line. Other than that, if you
00:30:20get stuck there and the lock gets broken, you still have a way to escape, you can just
00:30:25crawl out.
00:30:28Ever notice those plastic end caps on utility knives? And they also have scales on them,
00:30:34which indicates you may use them multiple times but with sharp edges. You can separate
00:30:40the blades through these plastic end caps, then you can move the slider and bring the
00:30:45sharp blade to the front.
00:30:48If you've ever taken a moment to examine a regular grocery cart, especially their fold-out
00:30:53section, you probably noticed those metal loops jutting out. They're designed to protect
00:30:58the items you carry in your cart. You can use them to hang bags with soft items. You
00:31:05don't want to accidentally squish with heavier products, like bread, or easily breakable
00:31:09things like eggs.
00:31:13Many coffee mugs come with curved notches on their bottom. When you're washing your
00:31:17mugs, put them against the rack at an angle in your dishwasher. This way, the water won't
00:31:22pool in there, so your favorite cup will be completely dry by the time you take it
00:31:26out of the dishwasher.
00:31:29If you're a McFlurry fan, you've probably noticed there's a square hole in the handle
00:31:34of the spoon. It's there so you can attach it to the special machine that mixes the ice
00:31:38cream and your favorite toppings together. The machine has a bar that slips into this
00:31:44square-shaped spoon and then thoroughly stirs it. And you get the spoon so they can minimize
00:31:49the mess during the process. Quite neat, wouldn't you say?
00:31:55A regular milk jug has a dent on one side. Some might see it as a random design decision,
00:32:01but a dent has several purposes. One of them is to get bigger if there's a gas buildup.
00:32:07This happens when your milk is spoiled, so you don't even have to try to check this
00:32:12out. Also, the dent is there so the jug doesn't burst if you accidentally drop it. The dent
00:32:18allows the expansion space that deals with the sudden pressure that happens when you
00:32:22drop the jug.
00:32:25Dental floss. Sure, it's important for your dental health, and it's easy to assume what
00:32:30you do with it. But dental floss is great in the kitchen as well, because it's a very
00:32:35precise cake slicer. Way better than a regular knife.
00:32:42Most kitchen shears have a serrated opening right there at the center where the blades
00:32:46and handles meet. It's something you can use to trim difficult herbs such as rosemary,
00:32:51thyme, or chives. Because of this opening, you don't need to pick the leaves off by hand,
00:32:57but de-stem them in one motion.
00:33:01The majority of gelatin containers or single-serving yogurts come with a tinfoil lid, and in most
00:33:07cases you can use this covering as a disposable spoon. Just peel away the covering and after
00:33:13a couple of simple folds, you'll have a perfect little spoon for your midday snack.
00:33:18Okay, I know it's kind of cold to the touch, especially on a freezing winter's day. But
00:33:23did you know that brass doorknobs actually serve a purpose apart from looking classy
00:33:27and shiny? Since it's a copper alloy, brass has antimicrobial properties. That means it
00:33:33can help get rid of harmful germs and bacteria, sometimes in up to two hours. In high-traffic
00:33:38areas that's all the more useful, but since brass is much costlier than other metals like
00:33:43nickel and steel, you barely see these types of doorknobs anymore nowadays.
00:33:48Speaking of lovely multi-purpose items, most screwdrivers have a tiny little secret of
00:33:53their own. They can sometimes be slid through a wrench so that they can be used to create
00:33:57more torque when twisting, not to mention the uses when it comes to bolts in hard-to-reach
00:34:02places. There's a reason why buttons on women's shirts are for the left-handed, and it has
00:34:08nothing to do with fashion. This practice dates back to the times when chambermaids
00:34:12were helping ladies dress themselves, and it was easier for them to perform their job
00:34:17with this orientation. Having the buttons placed as such indicated a sign of wealth,
00:34:23so it's easy to imagine why the practice carried on, even though most people dress themselves
00:34:28nowadays.
00:34:29Next time you receive a package in your mail, take a look at your box cutter. If it features
00:34:34some diagonal lines on the blade, you're in for a little design perk. Turns out that these
00:34:39are blades that snap off. Continuously cutting cardboard can dull the sharp edge of the blade.
00:34:44To help prevent the need to buy a brand new box cutter, the top segment along the next
00:34:49line can be broken off to reach a new sharp edge. To do this, check out the small hole
00:34:54at the base of the tool, sometimes called the blade snapper. The people that first came
00:34:59up with this brilliant invention were engineers inspired by the way chocolate bars are segmented.
00:35:05Hold on a minute. Don't throw away the cardboard package just yet. Most likely, you'll have
00:35:09some silica gel packets somewhere at the bottom of the box. Since this gel is basically a
00:35:14drawing tool, it gathers up the moisture out of its environment, so you can store these
00:35:18packets for further occasions. Whether you'll need to dry out your phone or some other electrical
00:35:23object, you can place them in a container next to the silica gel to reduce the damage.
00:35:29You don't have to be a mechanic to know when a standard car tire needs replacing, since
00:35:33they come equipped with a neat indicator. Take a closer look, and you'll see that treads
00:35:38within the tire are a bunch of rubber notches. When the treads are evened out with the perpendicular
00:35:44bars, it's a sign you need to book an appointment with your local car service, since most likely
00:35:49the tires have lost most of their traction and may not be safe for driving any longer.
00:35:55The upper corners of a car windshield feature textured black dots melted into the glass
00:35:59edges. This neat add-on isn't there for design purposes. It's called Frit Glazing, which
00:36:06means that a special type of ceramic paint is added to the window for protecting its
00:36:11sealant from UV rays. It also conceals and creates a coarser surface for the adhesive
00:36:17used to set the window in place. Whenever you're up for a drive, check out if there's
00:36:23a small tab under your car's rearview mirror. Bet you didn't know it's there to help switch
00:36:28the mirror from daytime to nighttime views. It uses a prismatic glass technology to blur
00:36:34the reflection and reduce the glare of headlights behind you in traffic. People came up with
00:36:40these manually tilted mirrors in the 1930s, but they became standard somewhere in the
00:36:451970s. While you're in the car, check out the headrests, as you most likely don't know
00:36:50that they carry a little disguised purpose. Of course, they're adjustable to accommodate
00:36:55passengers of any height so that they get the proper support for their heads and necks.
00:37:00The hidden feature is that they are detachable and come with two very solid metal bars. Should
00:37:06you ever find yourself stuck in a car and need to make a fast getaway, these bars come
00:37:11in handy to crack out the car windows. So you're out for a drive and you're suddenly
00:37:16out of gas. What I'm about to describe sounds more like a meme than an actual situation
00:37:21bound to happen. But what if you're in such a hurry that you accidentally drive off with
00:37:26the gas nozzle still in the tank? Well, the nozzles have been designed to prevent any
00:37:31hazards from happening, rest assured. They feature a breakaway device that will allow
00:37:36the hose to separate when taken out with enough force. Initially designed in the early 20th
00:37:42century to be worn exclusively by basketball players, sneakers soon became one of those
00:37:47fashion fundamentals, similar to jeans and leather jackets. If you take a closer look
00:37:51at them, you'll see they have two extra holes on the side, similar to the shoelace holes.
00:37:56They're manufactured as such, not only to provide extra ventilation, but to allow people
00:38:01to get extra creative with their laces when wearing the shoes. Admit it, you've always
00:38:06thought that chopsticks are merged at the end for the sole purpose of keeping them together
00:38:10until you're ready to dig into your meal. That may or may not be the whole truth. Under
00:38:15a more detailed inspection, the wooden tools feature a square-shaped end. Chopsticks manufactured
00:38:21like this date back to an old Japanese traditional design, which can help with breaking the ends
00:38:27easily. The separated end can then be used as a resting block for the chopsticks to keep
00:38:32it more sanitized in hopes it can be used again, since they won't be touching the table
00:38:37or any other surface. Women's bikes have a special design, which, surprisingly, has
00:38:42a historical and fashionable purpose. The lower frame is for the most part meant to
00:38:47make up for the generally shorter height of ladies, compared to that of the average gentleman.
00:38:53While that is the case for handlebars and saddles, the overall frame is lower for an
00:38:57additional purpose. Way back when women wore long skirts and dresses all day, every day
00:39:02they needed to make sure their outfits wouldn't get caught in the frame. That's how we came
00:39:07up with a lower-framed bicycle, perfectly made for women and their needs at the time.
00:39:13The fact that toothpastes are multi-colored is not just a nice perk to make dental hygiene
00:39:18more fun. There's a secret meaning related to each of the colors, which dates back to
00:39:23the 1970s. In those days, people grew more and more interested in their oral health care,
00:39:29and as such, they were looking for products which could do more than merely clean their
00:39:34teeth. One company was the pioneer in that regard, adding mouthwash to its toothpaste,
00:39:39meaning the blue strip. They later added on the red strip, meant to feature ingredients
00:39:45which helped with gum care. Speaking of toothpaste, check the cap next time you open a new tube.
00:39:50You may be in for a little surprise. There's a pointed cone shape inside the cap, so you
00:39:56can puncture the seal of the toothpaste without cutting yourself or ruining your manicure.
00:40:01Not to mention, it's more hygienic since you won't be able to transfer germs or other
00:40:05bacteria into the product itself.
00:40:08On the subject of bathroom countertop items, toothbrushes come with a neat add-on hidden
00:40:13in the bristle patterns. Apart from making the toothbrush look cooler, they also do come
00:40:18with a practical purpose. Most toothbrushes come with a pattern of blue bristles intertwined
00:40:23with white ones. The blue dye is meant to fade out, signaling the time when you need
00:40:28to replace your toothbrush. Dentists say that toothbrushes should be replaced every three
00:40:33to four months, but it does serve as a great reminder in case you forget.
00:40:38Still love playing with Lego? Don't judge. Hey, it's a great hobby for all ages. Notice
00:40:43there's a hole on top of the Lego heads? Behold, you're looking at a safety feature that the
00:40:48people at Lego designed to prevent choking hazards. The most dangerous issue should a
00:40:53person swallow any of these pieces is the blocking of the airways. Designing a hole
00:40:59inside the Lego head helps the air to flow freely through the piece until it can be removed
00:41:04safely.
00:41:05We're now used to all sorts of modern light bulbs, some tubular, some shaped like diamonds,
00:41:10and some even twisted all together. Historically, light bulbs were round and the initial shape
00:41:16served a purpose in itself. It was mainly connected to the fact that glass bulbs were
00:41:21hand-blown, which gave them the round shape to begin with. The hidden practical reason
00:41:26was that the light bulb filament needed to be at the same distance from every surface
00:41:30of the glass sphere. The easiest way to achieve this was to make the glass in the shape of
00:41:35a globe.
00:41:37Hey, have you ever been vibing out in your room, listening to some of your favorite songs,
00:41:43admiring the subwoofer of your speaker as it delivers magnificence to your eardrums?
00:41:49We all have, but have you ever asked yourself why that same speaker, along with other speakers
00:41:54across the globe, is almost always black? Some of you are probably screaming at your
00:41:59screen right now about your speaker being green, red, or any other color found in the
00:42:04rainbow. Number one, I said almost always. And number two, if you look closely at the
00:42:10gorgeous design of your brightly colored music player, you'll often find that the
00:42:14speaker beneath it is still colored black.
00:42:18One possible explanation for this is that the original technology of speakers had a
00:42:22diaphragm with black particles on it. So, as soon as a sound is amplified, it sends
00:42:28a charge through the diaphragm and these black particles are driven upwards. The carbon particles
00:42:33bouncing and touching the upper membrane of the diaphragm are responsible for creating
00:42:38some of the distinct sounds from our speakers that we all love so much. Speaker manufacturers
00:42:43must have gotten tired of their products changing color with prolonged use, combined with these
00:42:49black particles settling on the upper membrane of the diaphragm. So, their logical solution
00:42:54was to color most speakers black.
00:42:58Another more practical belief as to why speakers are mostly colored black is that it's a hue
00:43:03that easily matches up with many types of decor. Walls, furniture, and clothes all often
00:43:09look quite well when combined with this color, which is why it's so prevalent everywhere
00:43:14you go. Listening to music has repeatedly scored in the top 10 pastimes in the US based
00:43:20on research. Nowadays, you find sound speakers everywhere – in your television, laptop,
00:43:27and your phone – you can't escape them!
00:43:30But let's take a look at how they started off. Their origins are in radio and telephone
00:43:35technology. The first form of a speaker was developed by Johann Philip Rice in 1861. The
00:43:42German was a self-taught inventor and installed the speaker on his telephone. It was just
00:43:48about able to reproduce clear tones, but it could also replicate muffled speech after
00:43:53a few revisions. Alexander Graham Bell, the inventor of the telephone, decided to try
00:44:00and produce an improved version of Rice's speaker. Essentially, Bell and other inventors
00:44:05wanted to make an electrodynamic speaker. By 1877, it was still yet to exist, but due
00:44:12to the desire of inventors worldwide to change this, research confirmed that it was extremely
00:44:18possible to make one. In particular, the work of Wernher von Siemens, who came up with the
00:44:23idea of an electromagnetic coil-driven speaker, was a driving force in arriving at this conclusion.
00:44:31Why are there magnets in speakers, you might ask? Every speaker nowadays has an electric
00:44:36current, something the inventors we're discussing would never have taken for granted at any
00:44:41point in their lives. When this electric current is changing, it produces a magnetic field.
00:44:47To make the panel of the speaker move, magnets are used to create an opposing magnetic field
00:44:52which creates vibrations. These vibrations are the sound we end up hearing. The bigger
00:44:57the magnet, the louder the speaker will be. Another inventor by the name of Thomas Edison
00:45:03from the U.S. had filed a British patent for a system using compressed air for an amplifying
00:45:09mechanism. The first commercial electric loudspeaker saw the light of day only in 1924. The sound
00:45:17quality produced by this speaker was good enough for motion pictures. It took nearly
00:45:2220 years for the next groundbreaking development in the world of loudspeakers. This came with
00:45:27the arrival of the duplex driver in 1943. It offered better clarity and coherence at
00:45:33high volumes, which was important in movie theaters. Fittingly, it was nicknamed the
00:45:38Voice of the Theater. The duplex driver was immediately tested by the Academy of Motion
00:45:44Picture Arts and Sciences and instantly made its film house industry standard in 1955.
00:45:51Until now, this loudspeaker design is still used.
00:45:55Indeed, the film industry does seem to put a lot of effort into its sound, and so do
00:46:00the theaters we watch them in. You may have noticed that these buildings often have thick
00:46:04curtains on the walls. These are soundproof or acoustic curtains, and both are much thicker
00:46:10than regular curtains. They will either consist of heavier fabrics that are tightly woven
00:46:15or have better quality linings. This means that these curtains will absorb sound and
00:46:21reduce the acoustic reflection off the ceiling, windows, and flat walls of the room. This
00:46:26ultimately creates a much better sonic experience.
00:46:29The carpet floors are so thick in theaters for the same reason. It helps to trap sound
00:46:34by providing insulation. From a practical standpoint, this carpet is also set up to
00:46:39prevent the sound of footsteps during film screenings. This concept of trapping sound
00:46:45is also the reason why putting a phone inside a cup will make the phone's speaker seem
00:46:50louder. Any speaker sitting or suspended in an open space projects its sound in all directions.
00:46:57As the speaker vibrates to create sound waves, an equal amount of energy leaves from both
00:47:02the front and the back. By placing a speaker in some form of enclosure, we can redirect
00:47:08some of the energy that comes from the back of the speaker and project it forwards. By
00:47:13putting the speaker in a cup, you're directing the sound more efficiently. It travels only
00:47:18one way, making it seem louder than what you'd hear when you take it out of the cup.
00:47:24Speaking of phones and speakers, ever wonder why your mobile device makes your speaker
00:47:29produce a buzzing noise? This can occur when the two gadgets are near one another and your
00:47:34mobile is trying to send and receive data. The transfer of information produces electromagnetic
00:47:40disturbances in the medium around the speakers. It creates noise in the audio, and as a result,
00:47:46you can hear the buzzing sound coming from the speaker. A simple way to protect the amazing
00:47:51vibe your speaker is creating for you from this irritating buzzing noise is just to move
00:47:57your phone away from your speaker, or vice versa. This will eliminate what is officially
00:48:02known as electromagnetic interference. Research across America shows that, on average,
00:48:1074% of people own two or more pairs of headphones. 46% of them mentioned they listen to their
00:48:16headphones for more than 2 hours per day. Some choose the headphones by their looks,
00:48:21others by the sound quality. In either case, finding the right pair is important,
00:48:27since a lot of people are willing to spend over $100 on it. Headphones have become a true fashion
00:48:33accessory. That's why well-known figures are trying to make an impact in the headphone industry like
00:48:39the fashion industry. Music moguls Dr. Dre and Jimmy Iovine came up with the idea for the now
00:48:45world-famous Beats by Dre Headphones brand. They were walking along the Pacific Ocean one day in
00:48:522006 discussing a sneaker deal as they had an offer on the table from a major brand in that
00:48:58arena. After some discussions, they decided they wanted to do something they were more passionate
00:49:03about and landed on headphones. The duo's idea turned into a brand that was purchased by Apple
00:49:10in 2014 for $3 billion. It was the largest deal in Apple's history, and Beats by Dre controlled 70%
00:49:18of the headphone market at the time of signing. The move allowed Apple to take over the headphone
00:49:23space. The release of their popular wireless AirPods headphones in 2016 was another reason
00:49:30it happened. But how do these popular wireless headphones that many of us own actually work?
00:49:36These headphones rely on internal batteries to have enough power to remain wireless. Most often,
00:49:42they have conveniently built-in rechargeable batteries. But sometimes, they keep going
00:49:47thanks to standard AA or AAA batteries. They receive wirelessly transmitted signals from
00:49:54their paired audio sources, be it your phone or laptop. These signals are encoded by the
00:50:00source device and transmitted most commonly via radio frequencies or infrared carriers.
00:50:06The headphones receive the signal and decode it to audio. And just like that, it's music to your ears.
00:50:15If you look at it on the street, you'll think a fire hydrant is about three feet in height.
00:50:20But the actual size of the device used to provide water supply to firefighters all over the world
00:50:25is twice as large. That is, if you count the rest of the hydrant, which is hiding underground.
00:50:30They're mostly red, and it's not just a matter of urban design. First of all, they need to be of
00:50:35bright, easily noticeable colors so firefighters can spot them fast when they need to. The choice
00:50:40of color depends on how much water the hydrant can hold. It can sometimes vary depending on the
00:50:46location, but here's the breakdown. A red fire hydrant can splash 500 gallons of water per minute,
00:50:52while an orange one at least 1,000 gallons. Green ones mostly process 1,500 gallons of water per
00:51:00minute, and the most plentiful ones colored blue can generally contain over 1,500 gallons.
00:51:06Hey bowling fans, isn't it super annoying when your bowling ball gets cracked?
00:51:11Turns out that most of them get damaged because of incorrect storage or spikes in temperature.
00:51:17Now come on and face it, since it's already cracked a bit, aren't you curious what's
00:51:20actually inside the bowling ball? Because I sure am. Let's have a look. They mostly make the inner
00:51:26core of the ball of powdered metal oxides, like calcium or iron oxide. They mix them with some
00:51:32resin and catalyst to harden the whole mixture. So that light bulb shape you now see inside of
00:51:37the ball is actually its heaviest part. It also influences how your bowling ball rotates when
00:51:42going down the lane. The same goes with spray paint cans. When you shake it, it makes a weird
00:51:48noise. But what is that thing in there? It's called a pea, and it's meant to hold the paint
00:51:53mixture in place and maintain its shape. They generally make it out of plastic, metal, or ceramic.
00:51:59It basically acts as a whisk to make sure your paint is well mixed together before you apply
00:52:04it to your surface of choice. Ever wondered how soda bottles keep that refreshing fizz for that
00:52:09long? Well, they have a little plastic ring fastened to the lid. They place it there to
00:52:15keep the gas from escaping and making the soda go flat, even if you shake it around in your bag
00:52:20the whole day. Speaking of things we use on a hot summer's day, wait, wait, don't put your baseball
00:52:26cap on just yet. Take a look at it for a minute and you'll notice there's a small button on the
00:52:31very top. Is it functional or is it just there for the sake of design? Way back when people started
00:52:37using fabrics to cover their heads, some say the button was actually functional. Since it's on top
00:52:42of the cap where the fabric panels come together, the top button helps keep the cap crown in one
00:52:47single piece. Now with recent advances in fabric and pattern design, the button is more of an
00:52:53aesthetic feature. It's used to cover up the joint point of the fabric panels. Your cap might not have
00:52:58a button at all, but don't you think a cap actually looks better with one? Cotton pads have two sides,
00:53:05and if you take the time to look at them carefully, they're actually different in texture.
00:53:09Just in case you've ever wondered why, the textured side is for applying makeup,
00:53:13and the even side is for removing it. Bookworms, this one is for you. Dust jackets that come with
00:53:21a lot of hardcover books are not just meant to make your book look pretty, they also double
00:53:25as a bookmark. Just fold the pages you've already read underneath the inside of the jacket, and voila!
00:53:32Next time you reach out for your favorite shirt, take a look at the top buttonhole.
00:53:36It should be stitched horizontally, and all the other ones are vertical. Turns out that the dress
00:53:41shirt was designed this way since the first and the last buttons were the first ones to unbutton
00:53:46throughout the day. They then changed the direction of the buttonhole to ensure the
00:53:50shirt would stay nice and fitted before you're ready to take it off. These days we have so many
00:53:56variations of this awesome dessert that it's hard to imagine we've ever lived without it.
00:54:01You can find different types of cookie dough ice cream or even chocolate chip cookie cake
00:54:05basically everywhere, but the famous cookie wasn't actually invented until 1930. The story goes that
00:54:12a woman named Ruth Graves Wakefield was preparing some chocolate cookies as she was waiting for some
00:54:17guests to arrive. She soon figured out she was out of baker's chocolate, a crucial ingredient
00:54:21for the classic cookies. To fix things up, she chopped up a block of semi-sweet chocolate,
00:54:27thinking it would eventually spread out evenly throughout the batter given the heat of the oven.
00:54:31Things didn't necessarily go as planned, but hey, it's great they didn't because this is
00:54:36how she invented this modern dessert we now can't get enough of. And speaking of popular snacks,
00:54:43the potato chip is even younger than the chocolate chip cookie. Well, at least historically. There
00:54:49are many stories trying to explain how it was invented. One of them goes like this. A chef
00:54:54named George Crum, based in New York, put the chips together in 1953. He decided to try a
00:55:00different cooking solution when one of his customers didn't have nice things to say
00:55:04about his french fries. He said they were too thick and kind of mushy. Then Crum came up with
00:55:10potatoes that were thinly sliced and fried until brown. People absolutely loved the dish and they
00:55:17welcomed the first ever batch of chips with open arms. Ice cream anyone? If the story is true,
00:55:24back in 1904 at the St. Louis World's Fair, one ice cream shop owner ran out of cups to serve his
00:55:29dish. So he fashioned a waffle into the shape of a cone and the rest was history. Okay, I'll admit
00:55:37it, chewing gum-like treats have been around since the ancient Greeks. So this one isn't
00:55:41particularly a revolutionary discovery, but the actual gum we buy today wasn't there until the
00:55:47late 1800s. An American inventor named Thomas Adams wanted to mix together different chemicals
00:55:53to create rubber. He tried and failed for that matter to play with chicle for his experiment,
00:55:58but ended up fashioning this neat treat. They still use chicle to this day to produce most
00:56:03chewing gums. Back in the 1800s, there lived a man named Jean-Baptiste Joly who worked in the
00:56:10fabric industry as a textile maker. How he came up with this next invention that we use a lot these
00:56:15days has less to do with him and more to do with his maid. The story goes that the woman accidentally
00:56:22knocked a kerosene lamp over onto a tablecloth. Instead of getting upset over the damaged fabric,
00:56:28Joly noticed that the substance actually made the material cleaner. Figured it out yet? Yep,
00:56:34that's how the idea for the very first dry cleaner popped up. A very neat accident, if I do say so
00:56:39myself. Now this one I loved. Did you know matchsticks were initially called friction lights?
00:56:46Or at least that's how their inventor, a chemist named John Walker, called them back in 1826.
00:56:53He scraped a stick coated in chemicals across his hearth totally by accident one day and realized
00:56:58that they ignited and created a spark. Initially made out of cardboard, they were then made using
00:57:05wooden splints and sandpaper. Back in the 1940s, a man named Harry Coover stumbled upon a chemical
00:57:12formulation that seemed to stick to everything it touched. The scientific community at the time
00:57:17didn't look much into it as the formula didn't seem to have many applications back then.
00:57:23It wasn't until 1951 that he looked a bit more into the formula and decided to repurpose it.
00:57:29Along with a fellow Eastman Kodak researcher named Fred Joyner, they gave it a proper full name.
00:57:35But you must know it by the shorter version, super glue. It also has many uses in security
00:57:42these days that it's hard to believe that we didn't come up with this one on purpose.
00:57:46Back in 1903, a scientist named Edward Benedictus knocked over a flask by accident. He looked down
00:57:53and was amazed to see that the glassware had just slightly cracked but maintained its shape.
00:57:59He was expecting it to break into a million tiny pieces. Curious about this hidden feature,
00:58:04he looked into it and figured out what was keeping the glass together was a substance
00:58:08coating the inside of the glass. Ta-da! That's how humanity came up with safety glass.
00:58:15You just spent the entire morning running errands up and down the street, and you finally stop to
00:58:21treat yourself to a cup of coffee. You enter the nearest coffee shop, place your order,
00:58:26and notice that actually you really need to use the bathroom. It's a regular-looking public one
00:58:31with multiple stalls. As you pick yours, the one in the middle, you get inside, and your mind
00:58:37starts to wander. Why on Earth do bathroom doors have a half-inch gap between the door and the lock?
00:58:43And why on Earth do they have a huge gap between the door and the floor?
00:58:48Can we have a drumroll for this moment, please? Well, my friend, there is not only one specific
00:58:53reason why public bathroom doors have so many gaps in them, but rather several. Public toilets
00:59:00are designed to make people spend as little time there as possible. You aren't supposed to feel
00:59:04comfortable or at home. So, the design would have to reflect this notion. Here come the gaps.
00:59:11In some bathrooms, gaps are so big that users may even feel self-conscious about doing their
00:59:17business out of preoccupation that the rest of the people standing in line will see them.
00:59:22Then there's the matter of pricing. Making custom doors can be a heavy burden for the people
00:59:27building public toilets. This would mean understanding exact measurements so that
00:59:32doors would always fit the mold of the stalls it's supposed to be installed into. Now, not all the
00:59:38gaps in public bathrooms are necessarily the same size. They may vary, even if this variation is
00:59:44small and often unnoticeable. So, these gaps actually help to reduce the margins of errors
00:59:50and to turn production more cost-effective for the people financing them. In case a door comes
00:59:56wider or more narrow than it should, the gap regulates the differences and allows for their
01:00:01installation anyway. There is also the case of air circulation. The last thing you want to do
01:00:07in a public bathroom is to trap odors. So, you need a little space under and between the doors
01:00:13to allow the air to flow. Finally, the gaps are a big safety measure. It can always allow for
01:00:19people on the outside to see if someone inside a stall isn't feeling too okay and maybe needs some
01:00:25help. And what about that extra hole in the upper part of the sink? It has a name in everything – the
01:00:31overflow hole. And it's designed to keep the sink from flooding. So, in case someone forgets and
01:00:37keeps the faucet going for too long, or the sink gets clogged and water can't drain down from the
01:00:42main drain hole, the overflow hole comes in to save the day. Let's say it buys you a little time
01:00:49before you have the entire bathroom floor flooded. Have you ever noticed how satisfying closing the
01:00:54door of a car can be? Car manufacturers devote a great deal of time to designing these sounds.
01:01:01Studies have shown that they create a perceived sense of quality in the buyer.
01:01:05It all begins with the primary material. While older cars used to be made with heavier materials,
01:01:11car doors nowadays are produced with lighter tin, which can make a rather unpleasant metallic sound
01:01:17once you shut them closed. So, car companies employ sound engineers to ensure that there
01:01:22is the exact amount of foam, mats, and tin in a car's composition to make the most comforting
01:01:28sound possible. And what about those tiny dots on the top of your car's front window?
01:01:33The pattern of these little black dots minimizes distractions for your eyes. This black part,
01:01:39also known as frit, normally gets warmer than the clear parts, which prevents the windshield
01:01:44from deforming. And no, the tab under your rear-view mirror is not made only for the purpose
01:01:50of hanging fluffy dice or aromatic-pleasing air fresheners. It's actually a switch that allows you
01:01:56to adjust the position of the mirror depending on the time of day. Flip it one way, and it's
01:02:01the daytime driving mode. Flip the other, and you're ready to drive safely during night time
01:02:06as it tones down the glare coming from headlights of the cars behind you.
01:02:10Next time you head out to the supermarket, make sure to keep this in mind. In case you don't have
01:02:15a coin to unlock these shopping carts, there is a well-kept secret that can help you out.
01:02:21If you have your house keys on you, check for a rounded keyhead. If you happen to find one,
01:02:26try using it to unlock the cart. It should fit perfectly in there, replacing the need to carry
01:02:31coins around. Because, if we're being honest, who still has them? Elevators. If you want to
01:02:37ride them on your terms, and your terms only, make sure to try something out. Most elevators
01:02:43have a secret button combination you can use to skip all the other selected floors and go directly
01:02:48to the one of your choosing. This might work out, especially on those days when you've pressed 13,
01:02:54but you wanted to press 33. On most elevators, this works once you simultaneously press the
01:03:00closed-door button together with your floor number. This should help you get to your floor
01:03:05without stopping. Some elevators require you to double-press the selected floor numbers,
01:03:10as double-pressing will often cancel the previously made request, while other elevators
01:03:15require you to hold the open-door button and then double-press the buttons of the floors you'd like
01:03:20to cancel. Now, to stay out of trouble, it's best not to cancel the floors of the other people in
01:03:26the elevator. They won't take it kindly. Also, keep in mind that there are elevators that might
01:03:31not have this function. Now, for honey-lovers out there, go ahead and raise your hand.
01:03:36If your pot of golden honey is crystallized, know that it is actually a good sign. Crystallized
01:03:43honey means that it hasn't been pasteurized, which means better product quality. With a
01:03:48decrease in temperature, the natural ingredient of honey, also known as glucose, will make it
01:03:53crystallize. Now, try making the best of it. To add some texture to your oatmeal or toast,
01:03:59add a layer of crystallized honey and enjoy nature's sugar. And if you don't like crystallized
01:04:04honey, plop it in the microwave for a minute or two. Ah, winter and fall. You know what this means,
01:04:10right? Sweater weather. But there's nothing more annoying than wearing your beautiful wool sweater
01:04:16and itching yourself all the way through it. Actually, I can be more annoying than that,
01:04:21but let's talk about itchy sweaters. To keep this from happening again, here's the secret.
01:04:26Turn your sweater inside out and soak it in cold water. Add 2 or 3 tablespoons of vinegar
01:04:32and let it sit for a while. Then, drain the water. Now, while the sweater is still wet,
01:04:38massage a generous amount of hair conditioner into the fibers of the wool. After letting it soak in
01:04:44the hair conditioner for about 30 minutes, gently press the excess water out of the wool
01:04:49and leave it to dry flat on a towel. There you go, no more itchy sweater!
01:04:54Any fast-food restaurant you go to will hand out small paper cups for customers to fill
01:04:59with their ketchup, mustard, or barbecue sauce. But if you're eating some chicken nuggets or trying
01:05:05to dip your burger into the cup, there's always that bit of sauce that seems impossible to reach.
01:05:11Next time, try unfolding the cup. It'll turn into a small paper plate, and this way, you'll get all
01:05:17the ketchup you poured in the first place. Padlocks used in outdoor environments should
01:05:23be cleaned and lubricated every 3 months. Regular lubrication will help prevent padlocks from
01:05:29freezing in cold weather conditions. Look for the tiny hole on the bottom of the lock. Then,
01:05:34pour oil into it, and there you go, it opens again! One thing we often neglect is a point in an
01:05:41ointment cap. These pointy surfaces were designed to help us break the tinfoil protection of the
01:05:47ointment tube. You just turn the cap over and break the ointment seal with its own cap, and
01:05:53there you go! After a long day of work, all you really need to do is a bubble bath.
01:05:59You turn on the hot water and let it run for a few minutes. You might even light a candle and
01:06:03pour some essential oils into the water. Then, in comes the liquid soap. You stir the water until
01:06:10the entire surface of the tub water is crammed with bubbles, and make your way in. The bubbles
01:06:16in a bubble bath have a fundamental primary function. Their job is to preserve the water's
01:06:21temperature, just so you can have warm water for longer. Do you have sweaty feet? Weird question,
01:06:28but if you're one of these people, here's some good news. All is not lost. Try putting a dry
01:06:34teabag inside your shoes and storing it in a dry place for a while. The teabags will absorb the
01:06:40humidity and the smell off the soles of your shoes. So here I am thinking, shouldn't we have
01:06:46learned these things in school? Well, either way, if you learned something new today,
01:06:50make sure to tell us about it in the comments below.
01:07:02Tires on the landing gear don't burst because they're designed for a load that's four to
01:07:06five times as great as they experience during landing. The wheel itself might break, but the
01:07:12tire won't burst. This little tip based on people's psychology can help you choose the
01:07:17fastest line at the airport. If there are several lines at check-in, opt for the left one. It's
01:07:24believed that you'll get to the counter more quickly this way. Most people are right-handed
01:07:28and intuitively choose the right side. Your skin usually becomes a bit dry during the flight.
01:07:35This happens because of low humidity levels in the cabin. Bring a good moisturizer with you to
01:07:41keep your skin hydrated on board. Do you know that airplane pilots always eat different meals
01:07:47before a flight? This way, if one of them gets food poisoning, the other will be able to take
01:07:52control of the plane. Airplane tray tables are some of the dirtiest surfaces in the cabin, so make
01:07:59sure to wash your hands frequently and clean that table with an antibacterial wipe to get rid of all
01:08:04those bacteria living there. If you're sitting in an aisle seat, you can have more space to stretch
01:08:10your legs out. Just push the button on the underside of the outermost armrest. This will move the armrest
01:08:16up, giving you more space for your legs and preventing the armrest from jabbing into your side.
01:08:23Here's a reason why they turn the lights off in the cabin. Passengers need to get used to the
01:08:27darkness in case an emergency landing happens at night. This way, their eyes are already used to
01:08:33the absence of light, which makes it easier to evacuate. Flight attendants ask you to open window
01:08:39shades so they can see what's happening outside. This way, they can choose the best way to evacuate
01:08:45passengers in case of an emergency. Almost all passenger planes are white, since this color best
01:08:52reflects the sun's rays and prevents the plane from heating up. Another good reason is that white
01:08:58paint is cheaper. Also, workers and engineers can easily notice any damage on a white surface.
01:09:04It's better to avoid making important decisions during a flight. Your brain doesn't get enough
01:09:10oxygen at such heights. This negatively affects its functioning. Chewing gum, hard candies and
01:09:17mints can help you to avoid this annoying ear popping during takeoff and landing, but not
01:09:22because of the candy itself. You feel better thanks to the process of swallowing. Yawning helps too.
01:09:30As for the gum, it also helps get rid of that bad breath caused by the thin air at high altitudes,
01:09:35which pulls moisture right out of your body. Dry air can make you feel as if you're coming down
01:09:41with a cold. The air in the cabin dries out your nose and throat as if you have symptoms of a cold.
01:09:47These symptoms usually go away right after landing. The water they use to make coffee and tea on board
01:09:54isn't always clean enough. Yeah, many companies use very good water filters now,
01:10:00but still, it's better to ask for bottled water if you're thirsty.
01:10:04That tiny triangle on the aircraft wall over your seat means a lot for flight attendants.
01:10:10These triangles mark the windows through which you can see flashing indicators.
01:10:14Those signal the retraction of the landing gears and the closing of the flaps. Let's say the pilots
01:10:20find out there's some problem. In that case, a flight attendant rushes to the necessary window
01:10:25to check what's happening. But for passengers, this is just the best place for photos since you
01:10:30can see the wings perfectly. Seats in the middle of the cabin above the wings are the best for you
01:10:36if you have motion sickness. This area is more balanced and shakes the least during turbulence.
01:10:42If you tend to get nervous during the flight, do some physical exercise not long before boarding
01:10:47the plane. A little workout helps lower your stress levels and makes your body release endorphins,
01:10:52the happiness hormones. Also, this physical activity compensates for the hours you spend
01:10:57sitting still. The turbines are located under the wings since this makes it cheaper, faster,
01:11:04and easier to service the engines. Previously, they used to be placed in the tail. It required
01:11:10expensive equipment and much more time to repair. When they started installing the engines below the
01:11:15wings, ticket prices went down. Imagine you're flying in a hot air balloon. See the burner system
01:11:22installed under the gas bag, also called the envelope? It heats the air inside which makes
01:11:27the balloon go up. So, turbulence is the same hot air but created by nature. When the air heats up,
01:11:34it rises a plane. When it becomes cooler, the aircraft goes down and passengers feel as if
01:11:40they're riding a roller coaster. A stream of hot air left by another plane can also cause turbulence.
01:11:46It's common for most flights but usually, turbulence is so light that passengers don't feel it.
01:11:52Do you know that planes can fly even after one engine fails? Pilots can control such emergency
01:11:57situations and land the aircraft safely. Passengers may feel a slight tilt during the flight but in
01:12:03most cases, they don't even know the plane is flying with only one engine. Your eyes get oxygen
01:12:09straight from the air. It's not delivered by the blood. So, your eyes can feel somewhat dry during
01:12:14the flight. Put eye drops in your bag. They'll help you keep your eyes moist. It's forbidden to carry
01:12:19large volumes of liquids on board because some hazardous substances can easily dissolve in water.
01:12:26If a plane has to land on water, its wings become a life-saving pillow. Empty fuel tanks help the
01:12:31aircraft stay afloat too. By the way, it can be from 10 minutes to 60 hours before the plane sinks.
01:12:38It all depends on the model, weather conditions, and the pilot's skills.
01:12:42Those smiling flight attendants you meet when you get into the cabin usually hide their hands
01:12:47behind their backs. They're counting people entering the plane to make sure that all passengers
01:12:52are on board. Despite all the words people say about airplane food, it's not actually so bad.
01:12:58The problem is your sense of taste. It's not so acute since the air in the cabin makes your mouth
01:13:02dry. It also dulls your sense of smell. That's why airlines add a lot of spices and salt to
01:13:08their meals. Is it true that your hair grows faster during the flight? Not really. Scientists
01:13:14haven't managed to prove it. This myth appeared in the first part of the 20th century when some
01:13:19passengers noticed that their stubble had grown longer during the flight. It's normal for people
01:13:25to get headaches during the flight, especially right after takeoff. You climb to an altitude
01:13:30higher than Mount Everest within about 10 minutes. These changes happen too fast for your body to
01:13:35adjust. Seat belts on planes stretch across your stomach to save you from getting slammed against
01:13:41the ceiling in case of turbulence. When it happens, the aircraft starts moving up and down and your
01:13:47waist belt holds you securely. And seat belts in cars protect people from horizontal collisions.
01:13:53Airplanes have special protection from lightning. Even if it strikes, passengers won't feel it.
01:13:59Planes are covered with an aluminum coating that conducts electric current but doesn't let it get
01:14:04inside the plane. Electronics and fuel tanks also have extra protection. Plane seats are so
01:14:10uncomfortable because airlines try to fit the maximum number of passengers on the plane. That's
01:14:16why there's so little space between seats. Two additional rows means 12 more passengers. Also,
01:14:23companies make airplane seats lighter to save on fuel costs. Even seemingly insignificant extra
01:14:29weight can cost an airline thousands of dollars. And by the way, your seat has a fire-resistant
01:14:35coating. It's necessary to prevent a fire from spreading in case of an accident. Airport workers
01:14:41transport unclaimed luggage to special centers. If the owner doesn't show up within three months,
01:14:47the baggage is put up for sale in specialized stores. You couldn't use your phone on an airplane
01:14:52in the past since cell phones were really dangerous for navigation. Their radio signals
01:14:58could disrupt the settings in aircraft electronics. Oxygen masks fall down not only during strong
01:15:04turbulence but also when the air pressure inside the cabin changes dramatically. Passengers are
01:15:09okay if they put on their oxygen masks but in such cases are considered to be an emergency.
01:15:15And pilots do their best to quickly go down to a safe altitude so that passengers can breathe
01:15:20without oxygen masks. The cylinder on the end of a cable is sitting there.
01:15:28Useless as it might seem. In fact, this is a ferrite bead that assists with many electrical
01:15:35wires to reduce electromagnetic interference. Electrical wires act like unintentional antennas
01:15:42broadcasting the EMI. There's a reason why the spinning wheel inside the microwave is circular.
01:15:50A circular object will evenly distribute the heat as opposed to a rectangular and square one.
01:15:56When you place containers of these shapes inside, the energy is focused on the corners
01:16:01rather than spread evenly like in a round container. The temperature gauge on a toaster
01:16:08is commonly used to determine how crisp you like your toast. But the other more specific use for
01:16:14the gauge was for the different types of bread. White and sweet types of bread heat up much faster
01:16:20as opposed to heavier brown and rye ones. The older bread is, the more time it will need in
01:16:26the toaster to ensure the golden brown results you're looking for. Most ovens give you the option
01:16:33of leaving the door ajar when broiling a dish inside. You probably think the goal here is to
01:16:39help cool down the oven after use. In reality, its purpose is to focus on cooking the top of the dish
01:16:46and to ensure a crusty layer. Controlling the buildup of heat and steam by releasing it through
01:16:53the slightly ajar door gives you the desired result without cooking the entire dish to a crispy end.
01:17:01You probably noticed that your dishwasher has specific areas for different types of cutleries
01:17:06and dishware. But all the dishware pieces should be facing towards the center and not all in one
01:17:12direction. What types of foods were on the plates will also determine where they should be located
01:17:18in the racks. As the middle of the machine gets the strongest spray, carb-based stains from tomatoes
01:17:25and potatoes should be placed there. The detergent is more focused on the outside during the clean,
01:17:31creating a waterfall-like cleanse. That's why protein-based stains, like from eggs for example,
01:17:38should be stacked there. Ceiling fans push cool air down on a hot day, circulating the room. But
01:17:47they can serve you during the winter just as effectively if you flick that switch on the side
01:17:51or use the pulley. So if you want to save some money on heating and try to quickly warm up your
01:17:57room on a cold day, turn the fan on. It will push the air up and spread the warm air around,
01:18:03more effectively warming the room up. Do you still use sticky notes instead of those fancy new apps
01:18:10on all possible gadgets? Welcome to the club. Regardless of what you use them for, they can
01:18:16annoyingly curl up. If you've had this issue, it's because you've peeled them from the bottom upwards.
01:18:22Doing it this way causes the curling. Peeling them from the side will ensure they remain flat,
01:18:28ready to remind you of your daily tasks. Did you know that can openers weren't invented until 50
01:18:35years after preservation cans had been readily available? So how would it be possible to open a
01:18:40can? There are a couple of alternative methods just in case you've misplaced your trusty opener.
01:18:47All you need is a metal spoon. Set the can down on the counter. Hold onto it firmly and grasp the
01:18:54head of the spoon tightly. Apply pressure and vigorously rub the edge of the can's top over a
01:19:00small area. It takes time, but as you continuously rub, a small indentation soon opens a hole. Once
01:19:07the hole is wide enough for the spoon's tip, pry the lid upwards and keep going along the edges
01:19:13until you can finally access the hard-earned meal within. Most toilets rely on water pressure and
01:19:20gravity to function, so a power outage will not affect them. But if yours does need electricity
01:19:26to function, you must be worried about using it when the power is out. The good news is the power
01:19:32is only used to fill the toilet and not to flush it. As the flushing mechanism will still work,
01:19:38open the toilet tank and pour in a couple of gallons and you're free to flush away whatever
01:19:42you need to. Blockages in shower drains occur over a long period of time. It's inevitable. We
01:19:50lose 50 to 100 hairs a day and many of them will endeavor to reside within our shower drains.
01:19:57Hair only forms the foundations of the blockage and this attracts the buildup of various other
01:20:01things. A great life hack is to use your vacuum cleaner and put the nozzle in the hole. Once
01:20:06removing the plug, apply a wet cloth around the nozzle ensuring air cannot escape. The vacuum will
01:20:13suck up the blockages a lot easier. This will help avoid any extra costs from plumbers as they
01:20:19themselves use this technique. To make your candles last longer, trim their wicks multiple times and
01:20:27keep them as far away from water and moist as possible. It will guarantee that your candle's
01:20:32wax stays firm and steady and continues to burn slower for a longer period of time.
01:20:40The empty space between the panes of the oven door is there for a reason. You can stick a
01:20:45brush in there to clean the oven door glass. It's easy to access this space through the bottom of
01:20:50the door, open the lower shelf, then push the brush through the hole. While you're parking
01:20:57in a garage, you might find it difficult to determine how close to it you need to be.
01:21:02Not all cars have sensors ensuring you keep the right distance before the bumper makes an
01:21:06indentation on the wall. Applying a rope with a tennis ball from the ceiling at the right distance
01:21:12will help you learn the best distance to park from the wall. We've all been told to loosen a
01:21:18lock with WD-40 or lubricant. Yes, we all know we should have these around the house, but in case
01:21:24you don't, a great alternative is drawing with a gray lead pencil along the edges of the key and
01:21:30then putting it into the lock. Continue doing this until the keyhole has been adequately lubricated
01:21:36and the key functions smoothly. Pliers are prone to damage when you use them to adjust faucets and
01:21:43shower heads and are also difficult to grip. Take a couple of pieces from the end of an old garden
01:21:49hose and attach them to the jaws of the pliers. You'll find a huge improvement with grip and will
01:21:55avoid wear and tear. You can find a good use for discarded rubber for different things around the
01:22:02house. When fed up with tightening or loosening with a screwdriver, try using a simple rubber band.
01:22:09Place part of it into the screw grip and the screwdriver will have far greater traction.
01:22:14Moving cement blocks isn't safe for your lower back. Even with a wheelbarrow, it can be a risky
01:22:19process to place the cement onto the ground without causing damage. Three simple cylinder
01:22:24pipes can make a world of difference, regardless of the size of the block. Try lifting the edge
01:22:30onto the first pipe with a pry bar, then pushing and maneuvering as you gradually direct the three
01:22:36pipes towards the desired location. Just make sure you're not doing this on a slope.
01:22:44That first strike on a nail can be a great success or will result in a throbbing thumb.
01:22:50A bobby pin is perfectly shaped to hold a nail in place, allowing for your hand to be clear
01:22:56out of harm's way and for you to strike the nail without fear. Use a crayon instead of a pen or
01:23:03pencil while working with a wet saw to ensure the markings are not removed. They will also be easier
01:23:10to see under the murky water. Checking the drains on the roof and determining when they need to be
01:23:17cleaned can take a lot of time. Using duct tape, attach a mirror on the end of a long broom and
01:23:24review whether the drains need to be cleaned. To further assist with your balance as you check on
01:23:29the gutters, attach a pair of old trainers to the end of the ladder. The spread of the shoe and its
01:23:35grip will ensure a further level of safety. Liquid caulk normally comes in huge tubes, so you can
01:23:42never use it all at once. The hardened tips of liquid caulk create blockages. Grab a used cork
01:23:49and drill through it to make a perfect lid, concealing the liquid caulk. Now it's ready to be
01:23:54used again with no blockages. Have you ever stopped to think about the thrilling secrets of day-to-day
01:24:03modern life on planet Earth? I'm talking about tiny windows and washing machines,
01:24:08and little holes in airplane windows. If you haven't got a clue of what I'm talking about,
01:24:14tag along and allow yourself to be as surprised as I was when I found out.
01:24:21Remember the drawer at the bottom of your oven? Maybe you've been ignoring it all along,
01:24:26or using it to store pots and pans. Well, even though it can serve this function,
01:24:31that's not the only thing it's there for. The best way to use the bottom drawer
01:24:36is to keep your meal heated while you're waiting to serve it. Genius, right?
01:24:42Talking about secret doors, have you noticed that most washing machines have little flap doors at
01:24:47the bottom too? These doors actually serve as drain traps. It's where all the items that we
01:24:53put to wash together with our jeans and jackets go to. It's a type of collector, let's say,
01:24:59of small items. It stops them from getting into the main drain pipes and clogging them.
01:25:05It saves us hundreds of dollars in repairs each month.
01:25:10Now, who hasn't gone through the confusing task of having to measure how much pasta to cook for
01:25:16one serving? Well, here's the solution – the holes in the center of pasta spoons. They were
01:25:23actually made for measuring the exact amount of dry pasta you need for one serving. If you try
01:25:29stuffing wet cooked pasta through it, well, good luck with that. On a similar topic, have you ever
01:25:36wondered why pen caps have holes in them? Maybe you thought it was a design feature to regulate
01:25:42air pressure. But in reality, these holes have a much simpler and more important function – to
01:25:48reduce the risk of choking. Lots of people love to bite on their caps, and this tiny hole prevents
01:25:56them from choking in case they accidentally swallow a cap and it gets stuck in their throat.
01:26:01For kitchen lovers, there's a hidden secret right in front of your eyes that can change your life.
01:26:08Think pans, now think handles. Right, they have holes in them. As it turns out, these holes were
01:26:15designed to hold the spoon you're using for cooking. And instead of dripping sauce all over
01:26:20the stove or your kitchen floor, you can place the spoon in the hole and let it drip the sauce
01:26:26directly back into the pan. Woohoo! Speaking of everyday items, and I was,
01:26:34most doorknobs are made of brass because this material makes them naturally germ-free. Unlike
01:26:40plastic ones, brass doorknobs are kind of magical. They can disinfect themselves without you having
01:26:47to clean them. Neat, right? Have you ever noticed that at the bottom of a measuring tape,
01:26:53there is a little dip? You can find it in that metallic part you need to pull on to measure
01:26:59something. Well, that dip is actually the exact size of a regular nail. It was designed for people
01:27:06to place the tape on top of a nail and use it as a support while they stretched the tape.
01:27:12Well, I can't wait to try it out for myself! As for the margins in your notebook, they were
01:27:18invented to protect people's notes from mice. No, the mice weren't copying your answers for the math
01:27:25quiz. Actually, there were times when people had to cohabitate with rats and mice that often chewed
01:27:32on paper. So, to prevent information from getting completely lost, people created margins. This way,
01:27:40texts were moved closer to the middle of pages and remained unharmed by rodents.
01:27:47Perhaps this is where to-digest information came from.
01:27:52And what about those tiny holes at the bottom of airplane windows?
01:27:57They have an extremely important function of regulating the air pressure inside the cabin.
01:28:03In other words, they help planes fly high up in the sky. Big responsibility, right?
01:28:09By the way, tray tables on an airplane are the germiest places inside the entire cabin.
01:28:16Studies showed that the trays had 8 times the amount of germs on the toilet flush button.
01:28:23Now, how about we cut a commercial airplane in half and see what's inside? Well, it would look
01:28:30more or less like this. Rows of seats on top and everything else that needs to be stored at the
01:28:36bottom. I'm talking about passengers' luggage, emergency supplies, parts of the wing system,
01:28:42and so on. Moving on to bowling balls. Yes, I know it's a clumsy transition.
01:28:50Anyway, have you ever wondered what the insides of a bowling ball look like?
01:28:55If you have cut a professional ball in two, you'll see a familiar shape. Look closely,
01:29:01do you see it? Doesn't that look like the logo of Brightside? Anyway, professional bowling balls
01:29:07are different from the ones in your local bowling alley. That's because they're designed to make
01:29:12fancy moves. They actually have some really complex engineering inside. They're shaped to
01:29:18help skilled professionals get more strikes. The weight of professional bowling balls is designed
01:29:24to be projected inward as they travel down the bowling lane. This makes it harder for them to
01:29:29get into the gutters on the sides of the lane. Speaking of balls, let's take a look inside a
01:29:36baseball. To make it light and aerodynamic, producers use several different layers.
01:29:42Starting from the core, we have a cork center enveloped by black rubber. Then there's a layer
01:29:49of red rubber followed by two or three alternating layers of wool yarn. After that, there's a visible
01:29:56white leather cover and that beautiful red seam on the side, stitching it all together.
01:30:03And what if you had x-ray vision and managed to look inside a human bone? Ooh, spooky! I'd say
01:30:11what calls most attention is this spiderweb-like situation at the center of the ball. In reality,
01:30:17it's a highly condensed and complex structure of nerves that you have inside your bones.
01:30:23Aren't you lucky? Now I've got a riddle for you. What is round, can be found near the ocean,
01:30:30and looks like an aerial view of the Guggenheim Museum in New York City,
01:30:35the one that's made almost entirely of ramps. If you said a nautilus shell, hey, then you guessed
01:30:41right! A nautilus is a shellfish whose house you can find in countless souvenir stores near the
01:30:48beach. It's made up of two layers – a matte white outer layer and an iridescent white inner layer.
01:30:55And if you were to cut it in half, it would look very similar to the insides of the Guggenheim
01:31:01Museum. Aloe leaves are good for healing purposes and also for hydration. But if you managed to look
01:31:09inside of an aloe leaf, the image you'd see would be satisfying and very relaxing. Who hasn't dreamed
01:31:16of a pool filled with jelly? Now, there seems to be nothing more mundane and regular than a tube
01:31:24of toothpaste. But you wouldn't think so if you cut open a tube that contains several colors.
01:31:30Now, there have been speculations that the insides of such a toothpaste tube
01:31:35might be divided by barriers so that the stripes don't mix. But if you cut it in half,
01:31:41you'll see that it has only one interior chamber. As it happens, there's a lot of science behind the
01:31:48making of striped toothpaste. According to a specialist, they have to ensure that the paste
01:31:53in all the stripes has the same physical properties. This way, the colors are naturally
01:31:59prevented from mixing with one another. That's why if you tear a tube open, you'll see something
01:32:04that looks like several slices of pizza in different colors. If you open your closet,
01:32:11you're bound to find at least a few wooden hangers. Usually, they're made of cedar wood,
01:32:16which is a natural moth repellent. So, cedar hangers actually protect your clothes from
01:32:22moth infestation. For some people, more than others, eyeliner is an everyday must. Boy, isn't
01:32:29it? But did you know that back in ancient Egyptian times, both men and women used coral eyeliners to
01:32:37protect their eyes from the sun's glare? Way to go for the Egyptians for figuring that out!
01:32:43Now if I could just learn to walk like one… Normally, we use headrests for the purpose of,
01:32:50well, resting our heads, right? Well, not only. As it turns out, headrests can be easily removed
01:32:58from the seats and used to break car windows in case of emergencies. Now, this one is a trick very
01:33:06few people know about. You probably place your doormat horizontally like most of us do. But
01:33:12doormats serve the purpose of absorbing dirt from the soles of your shoes before you enter your
01:33:17home. So, for this function to work as it's meant to, the best way to place a doormat is vertically.
01:33:25This way, you take more steps on the top of the doormat before entering your house.
01:33:31And last but not least… I don't want to be accusatory here, but you have probably been
01:33:37vacuuming your house the wrong way, and I can prove it. Most people just vacuum floors and
01:33:43carpets in one direction or move the brush back and forth several times, thinking they've got
01:33:49all the dust out. But according to cleaning professionals, the best way to vacuum is in rows.
01:33:56First, you go forward with the brush until you arrive at the end of the row.
01:34:00Then you fluff the carpet up and move back down along the same row, gathering the dust that
01:34:06wasn't collected in the first sweep. Talk about efficient cleaning! On the other hand,
01:34:12my idea of housecleaning is to sweep the room with a glance.
01:34:16Hey, I don't want to disturb that protective layer of dust!
01:34:26The self-service checkout is way faster than waiting for people to unload their huge shopping
01:34:31carts. But this loud voice from a machine, commanding over and over again, spoils all
01:34:37the appetite. I have some good news for you. You can turn it off. Take a closer look at the screen.
01:34:45You'll probably see a volume button at the bottom. Use your finger to mute the annoying polite voice
01:34:52once and for all. Not all machines have this hidden option though,
01:34:56but it's definitely worth checking out. Usually, a sunflower oil bottle has this weird inner cap.
01:35:04Most people remove the entire top layer and throw it away. But there's actually a better way to use
01:35:11it. Turn the removed element inside, down, and put it into the bottleneck. It will make a great
01:35:18dispenser, and you'll never spill more oil than you wanted in your salad. Planning a picnic with
01:35:25your friends in the wild? Forget about the classic picnic basket. We got it all wrong.
01:35:31It's not a basket, but a bucket. Yep, it's way better to put your picnic stuff into several
01:35:37buckets. This will help evenly distribute the weight among all guests. And when you find a
01:35:43nice spot for your picnic and get all the stuff out, turn the buckets over and use them as stools.
01:35:49When the food is over, put the buckets into each other to save space on the way back home.
01:35:56Your toast is getting burnt, but you don't have any kitchen tongs at hand?
01:36:01Take two identical forks, put them together time to time, stick them tightly with a rubber band,
01:36:08and voila, your tongs are ready. Ever wondered what this double bottom under the Nutella lid is
01:36:14for? There's only one way to find out. Here's a brand new Nutella jar. Let's remove the white
01:36:20carton circle and then peel off the foil. Surprise! There should be a little knife to cut the gold
01:36:27foil cover. Now you know how to get access to your favorite guilty pleasure without scratching your
01:36:33hands. Don't throw away the glass jar after you're done with Nutella. It can turn into a candle holder
01:36:40or a lantern. Wash it, paint it to your taste, add some decorations or lettering. Glue a decorative
01:36:48rope around the neck of the jar. Set a candle inside the jar or put string lights inside it.
01:36:55No one will ever guess that it used to be a Nutella jar. It'll be our secret.
01:37:01Have you ever wondered why Ritz crackers have ridges? You can use them as a safe knife for cheese
01:37:08and similar soft products like cucumber, ham, and so on. Just roll the cracker as if it were a tiny
01:37:16pizza cutter and press. Now all the ingredients fit on your cracker perfectly. Enjoy your snack.
01:37:24Do you have one of those old baking trays that you never use but still hesitate to throw away?
01:37:30Good news. You can recycle it and make a gorgeous frame for a painting or a picture. There are two
01:37:37ways to do so. Degrease the surface of your tray and attach the image to the bottom. In this case,
01:37:44the frame will stick forward or you can flip the tray upside down and the edges will hide behind.
01:37:51Hang this construction on a wall or put it on a shelf and feel free to use metal paint to give
01:37:57your frame an appropriate color. An old cutting board can make a great frame for a mirror.
01:38:05Use double-sided tape to attach a matching mirror to the surface of your board.
01:38:10Make sure the mirror is firmly glued and now you can hang it on a wall using the board's handle
01:38:17or put it on a cabinet and lean it on a wall. Don't forget to wash and dry the cutting board
01:38:23before beginning this DIY. We don't want the mirror to smell fishy. Another superpower of a
01:38:30cutting board is keeping wires tangle-free. Wrap some string lights around an old wooden cutting
01:38:35board and put it in your closet. The next holiday season you'll have it completely untangled.
01:38:43A hair dryer can make a great mini vacuum cleaner when you need an emergency cleaning.
01:38:49Cut a plastic bottle and dry it. Put a layer of fabric on the fan of your hair dryer then place
01:38:56the fan in the plastic bottle bottom portion. Fix the bottle and attach it to the hair dryer using
01:39:02a plaster. Turn it on and you're ready to clean the mess. You can use a retro gas stove grate
01:39:10to hang your indoor plants. Attach it to the wall with screws or nails. Now you're ready to hang
01:39:16flower pots, string lights and any other decor items. If the color of your stove grate doesn't
01:39:23match the interior you can always fix this using spray paint. Chopsticks and wooden ice cream sticks
01:39:30can also turn into a beautiful panel that will decorate your interior. Glue the edges together
01:39:37to create a grid. You can also put together your name or any other word you want out of sticks
01:39:44then wrap the grid around with string lights and enjoy your decor. Don't throw away wrinkled
01:39:50kitchen foil it can help to sparkle up your day. Crumple identical foil balls and glue them over
01:39:57a glass, a mirror frame or even a book and your life will immediately become more glamorous.
01:40:04If you need to sharpen your dull scissors take aluminum foil and crunch it up into a ball.
01:40:11Sharpen the edges of the scissors right on that ball of foil. To speed up your ironing routine
01:40:17place sheets of tin foil under your ironing board and then put the cover back on. The tin foil will
01:40:24reflect the heat, the iron will get hotter and will do the job much faster. If you struggle to
01:40:31organize all your jewelry and lose your favorite items from time to time use a sponge to store it.
01:40:38Just make a few cuts and put your shiny little friends inside these cuts. They will sit firmly
01:40:44in the sponge and won't fall out or mix. You can also use a sponge to create an organizer for your
01:40:51jewelry. Find a cute box, cut your sponge into matching pieces and put them inside the box.
01:40:59Use glue or tape to attach the sponge to the box and enjoy your new jewelry casket.
01:41:06You can easily make chocolate filled strawberries at home. Take a plastic syringe, fill it with
01:41:12chocolate paste, remove the leaves from a strawberry and stick the syringe into the hole
01:41:17from which the sprig usually sticks out. Squeeze chocolate into the berry and it's ready. You can
01:41:24use the same technique when you bake eclairs, apples or want to leave a chocolate note on a
01:41:30pancake to surprise your significant other in the morning. Wooden pants hangers with metal
01:41:36clips can be handy when it comes to hanging curtains or a backdrop for your photo shoot.
01:41:42If you need to hang curtains but don't have any special hooks, attach several plants hangers along
01:41:48the entire length of the curtains and then hang this construction on a ledge. An old metal tea
01:41:55jar serves as a mini shelf for small things in your kitchen. Apply double-sided tape to the jar
01:42:02and stick it to the top corner of your cabinet. Have you ever wondered what these extra holes at
01:42:07the top of your running shoes are for? They're designed so that you can tie the shoes in
01:42:12multiple different ways. That's useful when you want to compensate for things such as a bad stride
01:42:18or even a damaged toe. Plus you can change the look of your shoes the way you prefer.
01:42:26Many people use a dust jacket of their book as a bookmarker. No problem with that, it will save your
01:42:32book from bent page corners. But the primary purpose of a dust cover is to keep the book
01:42:37safe from distortions. For instance, if you spill juice or drop some of the food on your book while
01:42:43reading it. The tic-tac dispenser has this little groove on its top so you can dispense only one
01:42:50tic-tac at a time. Even though let's be honest here, nobody does that. Most of us just spill
01:42:56a whole bunch at once and then we wiggle all those extra tic-tacs back in. Those rubber bumps you see
01:43:04between the tire treads are there for your safety. The raised edges tell you what the minimum height
01:43:09of your tread is. If the bump and the edges are even, it's time for you to visit the tire shop
01:43:15as soon as possible. But if the bumps are well beneath the level of the edges, you're good to go.
01:43:22What about that black grating on the microwave window? It's something called a Faraday shield
01:43:28and it's there to prevent microwaves from getting away and turning the entire room
01:43:32into a Faraday cage. If the microwaves escape, your meal won't cook properly either. So yep,
01:43:39the cage is not there to make it difficult for you to see your meal while it's cooking.
01:43:43It's keeping the electromagnetic energy inside.
01:43:48How about a wrench compatible screwdriver? Cover your screwdriver with the end of your wrench and
01:43:53you can increase its torque. That's why the head of your screwdriver is designed the way it is.
01:43:59When you have odd angles, you can use this strategy. You've probably heard those myths,
01:44:05the blue side of the eraser can erase the pen. False. Its purpose is to erase a pencil. But in
01:44:11case you're writing something on heavier paper, the blue side can remove smudges you see after
01:44:17using the pink eraser too. Have you ever wondered why oranges in supermarkets mostly come in the
01:44:24red mesh bag? It's a trick to make this food look more orange and encourage you to make a purchase.
01:44:31An extra tip, don't throw away the mesh bag. Tie it up so you can have a small pot scrubber
01:44:36to clean your sink, kitchen, appliances, and dishes. You can see golf balls don't have a
01:44:44perfectly round shape. Their surface is covered with many little dimples, something golf balls
01:44:49didn't always have. At one point, experienced golfers started noticing how through time,
01:44:55older balls with imperfections such as nicks and bumps could travel further. Such things create
01:45:03turbulence in the air around the golf ball, which eventually reduces drag. So, manufacturers
01:45:09started producing balls with dimples so they could go farther and faster.
01:45:15You might have noticed that sometimes there are ridges in toothpick tops. It's more hygienic
01:45:20because when you break that off, you can prop the toothpick up on it and it won't touch anything.
01:45:25Another safety feature you'll find, this time in your car, is a tab on your rear-view mirror.
01:45:31With it, you can change the position of the mirror so you don't get blinded if there's a
01:45:35car behind you with its high beams on. So, this little tab helps you control the glare of lights
01:45:41coming from behind. This feature showed up in the 1930s, but in the early 1970s,
01:45:47it became a part of standard equipment in most trucks and cars.
01:45:50Do you see that tiny hole on your iPhone, right next to the rear-facing camera?
01:45:55It's a microphone, and it's there so your phone can record sound as you turn your camera around.
01:46:03Some cables have a thick cylinder towards the end of the cord. It's called a ferrite core or a choke.
01:46:10It's a magnetic iron oxide that stops high-frequency electromagnetic interference.
01:46:14For example, you know that annoying static noise you get if you bring your phone too close to a
01:46:19speaker? This interrupts your call, which is why cable cords with big cylinders are pretty useful,
01:46:25because they prevent these things. Do you know why nearly all luggage bags and backpacks have
01:46:31two zippers? It's way more convenient and easier to open in that way. But not just that, you can
01:46:39You know how toilets at public spots like malls have those big gaps at the bottom? It's primarily
01:46:44for better circulation of air. This type of door also makes it easier to clean the toilet or check
01:46:50if it's occupied if you're standing in line. Other than that, if you get stuck in the toilet,
01:46:56you don't have to worry about getting stuck in the toilet, because you can just open the door
01:47:00and get out of there. You can also use this door to get out of the toilet,
01:47:06other than that, if you get stuck there and the lock gets broken,
01:47:10you still have a way to escape, you can just crawl out.
01:47:15Ever notice those plastic end caps on utility knives? And they also have scales on them,
01:47:21which indicates you may use them multiple times but with sharp edges. You can separate the blades
01:47:27through these plastic end caps, then you can move the slider and bring the sharp blade to the front.
01:47:33If you've ever taken a moment to examine a regular grocery cart,
01:47:37especially their fold-out section, you probably noticed those metal loops jutting out.
01:47:43They're designed to protect the items you carry in your cart. You can use them to hang bags with
01:47:49soft items. You don't want to accidentally squish with heavier products like bread,
01:47:55or easily breakable things like eggs. Many coffee mugs come with curved notches on their bottom.
01:48:03When you're washing your mugs, put them against the rack at an angle in your dishwasher.
01:48:07This way, the water won't pool in there, so your favorite cup will be completely dry by the time
01:48:12you take it out of the dishwasher. If you're a McFlurry fan, you've probably noticed there's
01:48:19a square hole in the handle of the spoon. It's there so you can attach it to the special machine
01:48:24that mixes the ice cream and your favorite toppings together. The machine has a bar that
01:48:30slips into this square-shaped spoon and then thoroughly stirs it. And you get the spoon so
01:48:35they can minimize the mess during the process. Quite neat, wouldn't you say?
01:48:41A regular milk jug has a dent on one side. Some might see it as a random design decision,
01:48:47but a dent has several purposes. One of them is to get bigger if there's a gas buildup.
01:48:54This happens when your milk is spoiled, so you don't even have to try to check this out.
01:48:59Also, the dent is there so the jug doesn't burst if you accidentally drop it. The dent
01:49:05allows the expansion space that deals with the sudden pressure that happens when you drop the jug.
01:49:12Dental floss. Sure, it's important for your dental health, and it's easy to assume what
01:49:16you do with it. But dental floss is great in the kitchen as well,
01:49:20because it's a very precise cake slicer, way better than a regular knife.
01:49:26Most kitchen shears have a serrated opening right there at the center where the blades and handles
01:49:31meet. It's something you can use to trim difficult herbs, such as rosemary, thyme, or chives.
01:49:37Because of this opening, you don't need to pick the leaves off by hand,
01:49:41but de-stem them in one motion. The majority of gelatin containers or single-serving yogurts
01:49:49come with a tinfoil lid. And in most cases, you can use this cover to cover the lid.
01:49:56A disposable spoon. Just peel away the covering, and after a couple of simple folds,
01:50:01you'll have a perfect little spoon for your midday snack.
01:50:06There's nothing better than a nice piece of buttered toast for breakfast,
01:50:10if we're not counting hot fudge sundaes. But if you find it harder to spread out cold butter over
01:50:15your toast, here's an idea. Use a cheese grater. Figure out the amount you need and grate the
01:50:21product. The process will also soften the butter, making it easier to spread, and you won't have
01:50:27to melt a too large amount of it in the process. But still, that hot fudge!
01:50:32Dried pasta comes in all sorts of different shapes and sizes for a reason. That's because
01:50:38each type of pasta goes best with a particular sauce. Pasta shells, for example, are perfect
01:50:44with denser and chunkier sauces. Why? Because the sauce gets inside the shells, making it easier
01:50:50to serve and eat the dish. The ribbed outer surface also helps with covering the shells in
01:50:56the sauce. If you ever end up burning your cookies, you can save them with your trusty grater too.
01:51:03Just grate off the blackened parts after carefully taking the cookies from the baking tray.
01:51:08But be careful and wait until the cookies have cooled down. Also, if you ruin their shape a bit,
01:51:14you can always dip them in some melted chocolate. After the chocolate cools down,
01:51:19you'll have perfectly shaped cookies. Although, after it gets past your lips and beyond,
01:51:25does the shape of the cookie actually matter? Just sayin'.
01:51:31If you like adding a lot of ingredients to your sandwiches but don't really appreciate it when
01:51:35the bread gets soggy, there is a way to reduce the amount of moisture. Pick your sliced tomatoes or
01:51:41cucumbers and place them between two paper towels for up to 5 minutes. After that, you can use them.
01:51:48Also, make sure to spread butter, cheese, or sauces, like mayo or ketchup,
01:51:53onto the bread first. This will help you seal the bread and keep moisture at bay.
01:51:59Some people think that the little white string that you find near an egg yolk
01:52:03needs to be removed before you cook the egg. Well, I'm here to tell you that these strands
01:52:08are called chalaza, and you don't actually need to get rid of them. They help keep the yolk in
01:52:13place at the egg's center. A chalaza is not going to mess up the consistency or the taste of your
01:52:18food, so removing it is completely up to you. Ever notice that most juice boxes come with
01:52:25two flaps, one on each side? Those are actually handles. Manufacturers design the boxes this way
01:52:31to make it easier for us to hold them. This way, we don't end up squeezing the box, making the juice
01:52:38spill out. Now, you don't need to be a baking pro to know that you can use both
01:52:44white and brown sugar in your recipes. But have you ever wondered what the difference between
01:52:49these two is? It turns out that the only thing that sets them apart is that, during production,
01:52:55a small amount of molasses is added to the brown sugar. Molasses is basically a sort of syrup you
01:53:01get when processing sugar cane. It's usually removed during the refining process. That's
01:53:07how white sugar is produced. But if some amount of molasses remains in the final product,
01:53:12we end up with brown sugar, with its specific taste and darker hue. It's a good thing.
01:53:20There are a lot of things you can put in your dishwasher, apart from your dishes. For example,
01:53:25you can clean such things as your silicone oven mitts or the knobs of some kitchen appliances,
01:53:31like your oven or stove. Some kitchen sponges and reusable towels may be safe to clean in
01:53:36the dishwasher as well. Speaking of kitchen cleaning products, there are a lot of things
01:53:42you can do with dish soap, like de-griming your patio furniture. Just add a bit of dish
01:53:47detergent to some warm water and use the solution to wipe down your outdoor
01:53:51furniture with a piece of cloth. Finally, rinse it clean using your garden hose.
01:53:57You can also use dish soap to get rid of greasy stains on your clothes.
01:54:01Be it pasta sauce or salad dressings, sometimes we miss our mouths! So, just apply a little dish
01:54:08detergent to the stain and then rinse with water. Use non-colored soap for lighter clothes. For
01:54:14more difficult stains, let the dish soap sink in for a bit, then throw the piece of clothing
01:54:19in the washer as usual. And think about maybe getting a bib. If none of the methods have
01:54:25helped you organize your closet, and you're still overwhelmed with large piles of clothes,
01:54:30there's a simple way that might be effective. It's called the one-in-one-out rule.
01:54:36That means for every new piece of clothing you buy, you need to get rid of one you already have.
01:54:41That means you'll always be decluttering your space. To make it easier to find something in
01:54:47your closet, good luck! Keep your most-used items at eye level. This way, they'll be easier to find
01:54:53and pull out when you're in a hurry. Those items that you tend to use less often, like your evening
01:54:58clothes, for example, can stay on the shelves above or below your eye level.
01:55:04You can make good use of old spice tins. If you glue some powerful magnets to the inside of the
01:55:09tins, they can double as magnetic shelves. You can use them for all sorts of everyday items,
01:55:16like kitchen pliers, ice cream scoops, or even cutlery. You can also place them on any metallic
01:55:22surface, like your refrigerator door. They'll blend in nicely with your kitchen magnets.
01:55:28Hidden in your laundry room, there's a great tool for picking up pet hair. It sometimes works
01:55:33better than lint rollers. Take a dryer sheet and, using some elbow grease, you'll get rid of that
01:55:39dog or cat hair in no time. It works on all sorts of surfaces, but it's especially effective for
01:55:45upholstered furniture. If you don't like it when a door starts squeaking whenever you enter a room,
01:55:52get a bar of soap and rub it straight on the hinges. This will only help for a while,
01:55:57though, but it'll do the trick until you manage to get to a hardware store. And, you know,
01:56:02buy some oil. Have you ever noticed that in some elevators, there's a star next to the
01:56:08number of a specific floor? No, it's not to indicate where my office is. It's there to
01:56:14point out where the nearest exit is. And it's not always on the first floor. It's most likely
01:56:19located on the floor closest to the street. Have you ever wondered why stop signs are red?
01:56:27Well, back in the day, they didn't actually have any particular color at all. Before the 1920s,
01:56:32they didn't even have a standardized shade. In 1922, though, someone came up with the octagon.
01:56:39But initially, it was painted yellow. All because the red coloring tended to fade out too quickly
01:56:45because of sun exposure. So, yellow turned out to be the best option. It took another 30 years
01:56:51for fade-resistant enamel paint to be invented. We ended up changing the color of the stop sign
01:56:57back to red. After all, it's still the best color if you want something to be easily noticeable.
01:57:04Do you know there's a type of rose that can grow taller than people? According to the Guinness
01:57:09Book of World Records, the tallest rosebush ever found grew in Vienna, Austria. It was a staggering
01:57:1628.5 feet tall. Yes, it arose to a great height. In the same way we all have unique patterns on
01:57:24our fingerprints, no two tigers have the same set of stripes. It makes it easier for people
01:57:29working with this feline species to distinguish one tiger from another. I'll bet you didn't know
01:57:35the White House has its own flower shop hidden in the basement of the building.
01:57:39It's supposed to provide flower arrangements for all sorts of events that take place there.
01:57:45It's probably no surprise that pizza has become an American staple dish despite its Italian origin.
01:57:52People in the U.S. love it so much that they buy 350 slices of pizza every second in the States.
01:58:00Man, I'm not getting my fair share. To manage the huge demand for this delicious dish,
01:58:05around 17% of all restaurants in the U.S. are pizzerias.
01:58:11Finally, there's a way to make lemon juice without the seeds getting into your beverage.
01:58:16Try cutting the fruit in two and squeezing it with a pair of kitchen tongs. The pointed end
01:58:21of the lemon should be facing down. The juice will flow down, but the seeds will remain inside
01:58:27the lemon. Ooh, lemony. It goes well with pizza. Ladies and gentlemen, please welcome our special
01:58:35guest today, the garbage bag. Canadian inventors created this irreplaceable household item about
01:58:4270 years ago. Today, it comes in a huge variety of shapes, colors, and sizes. And if you think
01:58:48it can only serve one basic purpose, I have a big surprise for you. It can even prevent you
01:58:53from unwanted communication, but more on that later. What if I told you that you've been using
01:58:58your garbage bags wrong your entire life? If you take a closer look at it, you'll probably notice
01:59:04that the seam is inside out, and it's not by accident. In fact, you're not supposed to shake
01:59:09up the bag to open it. You gotta place the bag over a garbage can like a hat, and then just push
01:59:14the middle of the bag down to the can. No worries, you're not the only person who didn't know that.
01:59:20This eye-opening trick went viral online and got millions of views. Imagine that you need to dye
01:59:25your hair, paint walls, or mold a clay mug immediately, but you don't have a protective
01:59:30suit on hand. Here comes the good news. You can make one out of a plastic bag. It will take you
01:59:35less than a minute. Just find a bag wide enough to fit your torso. Cut one hole in the bottom of
01:59:40the bag for your head, and make two holes for the arms on the sides. Voila. Feel free to make a hat
01:59:46from another plastic bag to protect your hair. When the job is done, you can wash this handmade
01:59:51suit and reuse it. Our next hack is for those who don't like to waste money. You can use a real
01:59:57plastic bag instead of a raincoat that looks like a plastic bag anyway. Just make a round cut for
02:00:02your face, and you're ready to go. You can reuse it as many times as you want. You can use a plastic
02:00:08bottle to create a recycled bag dispenser. Take a large bottle. It can be either a bottle of soda
02:00:14or washing gel. What matters is its shape. It must be straight so you can easily store bags inside it.
02:00:20Wash the bottle, dry it, and cut off the bottleneck and bottom. Turn it upside down. There you go. Your
02:00:26bag dispenser is ready. You can use your imagination to paint and decorate your DIY project with
02:00:32stickers and lettering to your taste. When the design is ready, attach it to the back of the
02:00:37bottle and stick this holder to the wall in your kitchen or one of the cabinet doors. Imagine you've
02:00:43been planning a perfect hiking weekend for ages, but when you actually get there, it starts raining.
02:00:48Don't rush back home. Plastic bags will serve you well if you need to put your clothes or equipment
02:00:53on wet grass. Also, you can make an emergency sleeping bag cover using a large garbage bag.
02:00:59After the rain, it will serve as a nice mattress to lay under your sleeping bag to protect it from
02:01:04moisture and provide an additional layer for a cozy nap. Just fill the bag with some soft leaves and
02:01:10straw that lie on the ground and there you go. A large garbage bag can be your best friend when
02:01:15you're camping with friends somewhere in the wild. You can turn it into a temporary handmade shower,
02:01:21toilet, or even a dressing room out of it. Just hang it on the tree and no one will spy on you.
02:01:27If you went for a walk wearing a pair of your favorite shoes that get wet easily, here's an easy
02:01:31tip to keep your socks dry. Put plastic bags over your socks, tuck the edges of the bags into your
02:01:37socks or trousers, and then put your shoes on. There's one obvious drawback though. Feet can slip
02:01:43inside the shoes, so be careful. These plastic socks are also handy when you're trying to put on
02:01:48tight jeans that usually make your feet stick inside them. Have you ever had your back torn at
02:01:54the worst possible moment? A plastic bag with handles can become an emergency backpack. Just
02:01:59place your stuff inside the bag, put your hands through the handlers, and you're ready to go.
02:02:05A garbage bag is also a good material for book covers. You can reuse multicolored bags to create
02:02:10a unique pattern for your favorites. You're moving to a new house and packing all your belongings.
02:02:16Suddenly, you run out of boxes. Sounds familiar? No problem. Grab a package of large garbage bags
02:02:22and pack the remaining stuff. Unlike boxes, this packaging will protect your property from rain or
02:02:28snow. Garbage bags are especially good for packing blankets, pillows, and stuffed toys. If you need
02:02:35to make a vacuum packing for your clothes or stuffed toys, simply put your belongings in a
02:02:40trash bag, place a tube from your vacuum cleaner inside the bag, and then turn it on. The vacuum
02:02:45cleaner will remove all your excess hair from the bag, and you'll save space in your suitcase
02:02:50or basement. Someone really special has invited you home to cook a romantic dinner together.
02:02:56Finally, you want to show all your extraordinary cooking skills, but your special someone doesn't
02:03:01have an apron, and you don't want to mess up your new outfit. No worries. Make an emergency
02:03:06apron using a large garbage bag. It will surprise that special someone even more. Speaking of stylish
02:03:13outfits, are you familiar with the term garbage bag dress? Celebrities and famous fashion brands
02:03:19shock the audience with outfits looking like trash bags from time to time. Some of them actually make
02:03:24outfits using garbage bags like fabric. It's a popular option for young artists who can't afford
02:03:29to buy and use expensive fabrics. Garbage bags are very flexible, so they are a useful material for
02:03:36making patterns for future outfits. When it comes to garbage bags, the DIY project's possibilities
02:03:42are almost infinite. People use bags to make lampshades, clothes covers, small cosmetic bags,
02:03:48makeup organizers, recycled glasses, and whatnot. Some even weave baskets, bags, and floor rugs out of
02:03:55them. It's pretty easy to handcraft a rug. You need to cut several bags into equal strips and weave a
02:04:01long braid from these strips. Now twist this braid into a spiral and tire glue each layer together.
02:04:07To secure this entire construction from breaking, you can screw your rug on a sewing machine from
02:04:12the middle to the edges as if you're drawing a star. This plastic braid can also serve as
02:04:17emergency laces, a rope, or a handmade ribbon for decorating gifts and flowers. Filmmaking is another
02:04:24yield where garbage bags can be real stars. If you're shooting indoors and the sunlight is too
02:04:29sharp, you can put white garbage bags on all windows to diffuse the light or to set the white
02:04:34balance. Black lightproof garbage bags may serve you as a shading curtain to get rid of the sunlight
02:04:39in the room whatsoever. Feel free to use a white bag to create a diffused light bulb. Inflate the bag
02:04:45like a balloon and put it next to a lamp, but make sure to use a LED light so it doesn't get
02:04:50too hot. Everyone knows that touching a plastic bag with a hot iron is a bad idea because it will
02:04:56melt, but this lets us create unique shapes from this colorful and affordable material.
02:05:01Want to make a unique designer vase? Take a bowl and cover it with paper tightly, then wrap the
02:05:07matching strips of plastic bag around the bowl. Now place another layer of paper on the top and
02:05:12gently iron over the entire surface of the bowl. Voila! The plastic's melted and you've got a new
02:05:18stylish and eco-friendly vase. Garbage bags can produce very cool sound effects. If you live in a
02:05:24desert where it never rains and need to recreate that relaxing sound, use a plastic bag. It's
02:05:30always better to speak up like an adult, but if that doesn't work for you, here's a quick fix.
02:05:35Next time some annoying person calls you, don't bother to make excuses why you can't talk right
02:05:40now. Just grab a garbage bag and rustle it into your phone speaker yelling,
02:05:44Hello? Hello? I can't hear you. Confession time. Have you ever used this trick?
