00:00So, grab your phone.
00:02Good, now turn it around.
00:05You see that little dot between the camera and the flash?
00:08That's a tiny microphone.
00:10Bet that's something you didn't know.
00:12What's it doing there?
00:13Well, when you're on a phone call, this little guy is busy at work reducing the amount
00:18of background noise other people hear when you talk.
00:21That's right, if it wasn't for this, calls wouldn't be as nearly as crisp as they
00:26are now.
00:28You're lost in the woods and you're rushing to get back to camp.
00:32You suddenly remember you've got something that can help.
00:35You grab one of your chest straps from your backpack and whistle on it.
00:40Yep, that's right.
00:42A lot of bags have this feature in them, especially the ones made for the outdoors.
00:47It isn't long before you hear the call of one of your friends and you follow them back
00:51to the warm campfire, saved by this cool bit of design.
00:56If you're a curious person, you might have wondered what that little pocket in your jeans
01:01is doing there.
01:02You know, the one that's inside the bigger pocket?
01:05People often use it to store coins and bills, but it's not meant for that.
01:10It's actually designed to store your pocket watch safely.
01:13Ah, maybe that's where the name pocket watch comes from!
01:19You finally arrive home after a long day's work.
01:22You understandably don't feel like cooking, so you sit on the couch and watch a bit of
01:27TV and order some takeout.
01:29How about Chinese?
01:30Ah, perfect!
01:31There's the doorbell.
01:34That has to be your food!
01:35It smells delicious!
01:37Wait, before you grab the plates, do this instead.
01:41Open your Chinese food container on the table.
01:43It becomes the perfect plate.
01:46And it's cardboard.
01:47Which means no cleaning either!
01:50The can of soda you got with your food has a cool feature too.
01:55Look at the tiny metal tab there, the one you use to open the can.
01:59Guess what?
02:00You can fit your straw in there!
02:01In fact, that's exactly what they're made for!
02:04Go ahead, try it for yourself!
02:08If you're not at your computer, take a look at your keyboard right now.
02:11If you're not, that's okay.
02:13Here's one on the screen.
02:14The keycaps are arranged in what's called the QWERTY layout, named after the first 6
02:20letters below the numbers.
02:22As it turns out, it wasn't always this way.
02:24They used to be laid out alphabetically, which would make more sense when you think about
02:29it.
02:30The alphabetical layout fell out of use because long ago, there were things called typewriters.
02:36Remember those?
02:37You pressed down a key, and a type bar would fly out, hitting an inked ribbon and stamping
02:43the letter on the piece of paper.
02:45Eventually, typists got good at this and typed faster.
02:49Too fast.
02:50The type bars would eventually get caught in a log jam with each other, ruining the
02:54flow.
02:55To fix this problem, they made keyboards with randomized keycaps.
02:59The new layout actually worked better because it made typing harder, helping to slow typists
03:04down and prevent the type bars from getting stuck.
03:07Much better!
03:08Today, no type bars.
03:10No typewriters, mostly.
03:12People are still fast nowadays, but you just can't help but wonder who was faster, though.
03:17Us or them?
03:19Typewriters have another hidden feature too.
03:21Have you ever noticed that the F keycap and the J keycap have little bumps on the bottom
03:26of them?
03:27As it turns out, they're there to help people figure out where they are on the keyboard
03:31without having to take their eyes off the screen.
03:35Grabbing a takeaway cup of coffee at your favorite cafe might be just what you need
03:40to fully wake up in the mornings.
03:43When you get back home or to work, though, you might be afraid to stain your desk when
03:47you put the steaming hot coffee down.
03:50Worry not, your plastic lid isn't only good for keeping your coffee hot, it also doubles
03:55as a coaster.
03:56In fact, they're the perfect size to hold a cup.
03:59Try it for yourself!
04:02This one's gonna come in handy if you're a home cook.
04:05If you're like me, you might have a bit of trouble deciding how much pasta you need
04:09for just one serving.
04:11If you've got a pasta scoop, grab that.
04:14Most people don't know what the little hole in the middle is for and assume it's
04:18supposed to help with water drainage or something.
04:21It turns out that it helps you measure out a perfect serving.
04:25Just see how much dry spaghetti you can fit in the hole and use that as one portion.
04:32Out of the store buying coat hangers, you might notice that the plastic ones feel cheaper
04:37than the wooden ones.
04:38There's a good reason for this – wooden hangers are made out of cedar wood.
04:43The big difference between the two is that the wooden ones repel bugs and moths.
04:49They're stronger and last longer too, perfect for things that might stay in your closet
04:53for a long time.
04:56When you brush your teeth, you might've noticed that your toothbrush has blue bristles.
05:00They're not just there for show.
05:02In fact, they're there to tell you when it might be time to switch toothbrushes.
05:07These bristles lose their strength and color when the brush has been worn down, letting
05:12you know that it's time to get rid of it.
05:17Microwaves often look a bit like mini-TVs, especially ones where you can clearly see
05:21the black film around them.
05:23This is actually a really important feature that's used to keep the radiation from slipping
05:27away.
05:28They're called Faraday cages, if you want to get technical.
05:32This is why you can stand next to a microwave without melting into a puddle.
05:38That's not to say you should stand in front of the microwave and watch your food heat
05:41up, but at least you know you won't grow an extra ear or something.
05:46Okay, not really.
05:48Some ovens have a drawer under them.
05:50It's tempting to use this to store random junk you don't use often, but there's a better
05:54use for it.
05:55Instead, this should be used to help keep the food that's waiting to be served hot.
06:00You can take it out of the oven and store it right in this drawer, keeping your oven
06:04free for you to carry on cooking.
06:08You're on a plane looking around trying to pass the time before takeoff.
06:13When you examine the window, you notice it has a little, very tiny hole on its bottom.
06:18Don't worry, it's not broken.
06:21It's there to relieve the pressure that builds up over time as the plane goes up and down.
06:26It also lets the air flow through it.
06:29Raise your hand if you've ever ridden on an escalator and scrubbed your shoes on its
06:33bristles.
06:34And I'm guilty of doing that, maybe more than I should.
06:37It's not there to clean your shoes, though.
06:39It's an important safety measure.
06:41It stops your shoelaces, clothing, and other stuff from getting stuck in there, avoiding
06:46a nasty scene when you go to get off.
06:51Sometimes a piece of fabric comes with your new clothing.
06:53It usually comes along with the extra buttons in a little plastic bag.
06:57You might think it's just a piece of fabric to use for future patching, in case you rip
07:02it.
07:03But that isn't its purpose at all.
07:04It's actually supposed to be put in the washing machine to test how it reacts to various
07:10washings.
07:11Now, you don't have to worry about shrinking your new, expensive coat because you know
07:15how it'll react to the wash.
07:17Bubbles!
07:18Who doesn't love bubbles?
07:20Most people have fond memories with bubble blowers as a kid.
07:23But as adults, the closest thing we can get to recapturing that feeling is with bubble
07:28baths.
07:29After a hard day at work, there's nothing better than dipping into a nice warm bubble
07:33bath.
07:34Right, guys?
07:35And the bubbles do more than just clean you.
07:38If they're high-quality bubbles, they'll serve as a heat insulator.
07:42So they make sure that your bath stays warm for longer.
07:47Boxes of chocolate sometimes have these mysterious holes in them.
07:51When I'm eating a box, or two, I usually ignore them and take out the chocolate by
07:55pressing the bottom of the plastic.
07:58It turns out that I've been doing it wrong the whole time.
08:02If you press one of the holes, the chocolate comes right out.
08:06I'm certainly going to start doing this from now on.
08:09Here's another one from the kitchen.
08:12The handle on a pot will often have a hole in it.
08:16Most people use this to hang them on a nail on the wall as an easy storage method.
08:21The hole has another use too.
08:23When you're cooking, you can use this handle to hold your wooden spoon or whatever else
08:28you might be cooking with.
08:29This makes sure you don't make a mess when you put it down.
08:34Glass bottles usually come with a cap in them.
08:37Well, duh.
08:38Otherwise, the liquid would just spill.
08:40In this cap, there's a plastic liner that seemingly has no purpose, right?
08:45Wrong.
08:46It's a seal.
08:47No, not a seal.
08:50A seal.
08:51It's the kind that helps keep your drink fizzy.
08:55Just the refreshment I needed.
08:57A lot of doorknobs are made out of brass, and it's not by chance.
09:01They're made out of this specific material because it's bacteria's worst enemy.
09:06That's right, it destroys them.
09:08Perfect for those who want to keep a clean house and avoid germs.
09:12Hey, you want a fish?
09:18So you're hungry, but not quite ready to eat a three-course meal just yet?
09:22How about some instant noodles instead?
09:25Ah, the water's boiled, your tummy's rumbling, but there's a problem.
09:29The Styrofoam cup's broken, and the noodles are exposed.
09:32Wait, is that a space at the bottom of the cup?
09:36Why?
09:37That space is for protecting the noodles.
09:39It's not the company trying to save money or anything.
09:42Notice how the ramen in cups is hardly ever broken, but the one in the packet comes out
09:47looking like a mess?
09:48This technique is called a middle suspension.
09:51The noodles are packed in tightly to stop them from getting crushed in the delivery
09:55truck.
09:56It's not just about the noodles looking nice and long.
09:59It also helps those tasty noodles soften more easily.
10:02Now, morning breath isn't the best.
10:05Luckily, there's an easy way to get rid of it.
10:08Yeah, it would've been easy to think that mouthwash was invented for, you know, washing
10:13your mouth.
10:14Well, mouthwash was originally invented and sold as a floor cleaner.
10:19It was sold to hospitals as an antiseptic for years.
10:22It never really took off.
10:24Some genius in marketing rebranded it as a mouthwash, and the rest is minty fresh history.
10:30So after you've cleaned your teeth, just remember, rebranding can be pretty powerful.
10:37It's hard to imagine a world without the Internet these days.
10:40No streaming, no online games, or pictures of cute little kitties.
10:44Yeah, that's not what it was designed for, but who cares, right?
10:48The prototype Internet was called ARPANET, or the Advanced Research Projects Agency
10:54Network.
10:55This machine was very sensitive.
10:56To stop anyone from turning it off, some clever scientist stuck a piece of paper on it with
11:01these powerful words.
11:03This machine is a server.
11:04Do not power it down!
11:06It was written in red ink.
11:08Hey, nice touch!
11:11Having your professors scribbling in the margins of your notebook isn't exactly new.
11:15Except that margins weren't designed for that.
11:18They're rat protection.
11:20Back in the day, rats would nibble on paper all the time.
11:23So if you wrote something on the edge of the paper, it ended up inside a hungry rat.
11:28A couple of well-placed lines stopped your best answers from getting eaten.
11:33Hey, I can't finish this pizza.
11:36Time to cover up those leftovers.
11:38Luckily, I have plenty of plastic wrap.
11:41A little tug, and the roll just jumped out.
11:44Prison break!
11:45If you look at the rat's home – the long, thin box – there's a special little feature
11:50that can help you.
11:51A cardboard tab on each end.
11:54Push them in, and the roll's not going anywhere.
11:57Strange that I've never seen them before.
12:00If you ever find yourself stuck in the trunk of your car, stay calm.
12:04All cars are supposed to be equipped with an emergency latch to help open the trunk
12:08from the inside in the unlikely case it happens.
12:12These latches are so well thought out that they can be opened by people of all ages.
12:17More so, handles are designed to glow in the dark, too.
12:20You can even pull them with a mouth if there's not enough wiggle room to use your hands.
12:25Never mind how you ended up in the trunk in the first place.
12:28Moving on…
12:29If you're ever working with needle and thread, remember you don't need to stick the needle
12:34directly into the spool.
12:36You may end up losing the needle altogether.
12:38Not to mention you can easily hurt your fingers!
12:41A lot of modern sewing kits these days come with a designated place for safeguarding the
12:46needles.
12:47It's located at the bottom part of the thread spool.
12:49You'll just need to pull it out.
12:51It's even made to hold multiple sewing needles at a time.
12:55Disposable ballpoint pens come with a little secret of their own.
13:00Did you ever notice that in some of them, there's a small hole in the plastic part?
13:04It's actually a rudimentary ventilation system.
13:08It's supposed to let the ink easily make it to the tip of the pen.
13:11Okay, I know it's in the name, but you really don't need to shake the seasoning shaker
13:16to get any product out.
13:18Don't believe me?
13:19You're not the only one.
13:21Go grab your favorite seasoning bottle out of your pantry.
13:25If it has one of those removable plastic caps, it's perfect for the experiment.
13:30Instead of shaking the bottle, try holding it from the plastic cap while it's upside
13:34down.
13:35Now gently twist the bottle from side to side and, before you know it, you get some gorgeously
13:41flowing seasoning without having to wiggle the shaker and make a mess all over the stove.
13:47On the same note, most salt and pepper shakers should have ridges on the bottom of the glass
13:52portion.
13:53In case you get any seasoning stuck in there, place the bottom of the salt shaker against
13:58the bottom of the pepper shaker and wiggle it around so the ridges click with each other.
14:03The seasoning should easily pour out now without you having to open the bottle.
14:08In colder weather, you often have so many clothing layers on you that you can hardly
14:13feel the purse or back straps on your shoulder anymore.
14:17Not to mention how fast they can slide off.
14:19Some jackets come with a built-in solution for that in the form of a small tab on the
14:24shoulder with either a hook or a button.
14:26It's meant to be opened and closed comfortably so you can keep your purse in place at any
14:32time.
14:33You're most likely using it merely to peel the skin of potatoes, carrots, or cucumbers.
14:39But you can use your vegetable peeler for chopping fine strips of onion as well.
14:44Just cut the onion into quarters vertically and then start slicing.
14:48This might also help out with those embarrassing onion tears.
14:53Most people miss this one, but should you ever have a closer look at your toothpaste
14:57tube, you will surely see some sort of coloring there.
15:01Either a dot or a block.
15:03Colors can vary.
15:04They can be black, green, red, or even blue.
15:08These color spots are actually meant to help the assembly machines back at the toothpaste
15:12factory.
15:13They recognize when and where these machines need to cut the toothpaste tubes and proceed
15:17to fold them for packaging.
15:20For most types of footwear, if there's anything that seems a bit out of place, always know
15:24that it's there for a reason.
15:27Most manufacturers don't put extra items on shoes just for fun.
15:31It would definitely be a waste of time and resources.
15:34For footwear like boots, for example, there's often a small loop at the top back of the
15:39shoe.
15:40It's there to help you when you need to put the shoe on since you can quickly pull
15:43on it.
15:44Plus, you can also hang the shoes somewhere, most likely to dry, since most boots are meant
15:50to be worn in the colder weather.
15:52Now I've been guilty at least once of overdressing with a bunch of layers just so I won't need
15:57to jam everything in my check-in bag.
16:00But does it become a problem when you actually have to get seated?
16:04What do you do with your coat or your jacket?
16:06Well, have a closer look next time you board a plane on the seat in front of you.
16:11The hook that keeps the tray table upright can double as a jacket hook.
16:16As long as you don't need to have any meals while in the air, you're good to go.
16:21Most mascaras expire within 3-6 months, I'm told, depending on the manufacturer.
16:27But you can help speed up that process if you're not careful enough.
16:31Continuously pumping the mascara wand trying to mix in the product actually pushes more
16:36air into the tube.
16:38This can make it dry much faster, and you evidently won't get the desired results
16:42with it anymore.
16:43There's an easy way to check if your mascara is still good enough to use.
16:48If you don't hear a popping noise when you take the brush out, you may very well need
16:53to go get yourself a new mascara tube.
16:56Now I know we're living in the era of Bluetooth-connected devices, but for better
17:01quality sound, they still recommend using headphones that connect via audio jacks.
17:07Remember seeing black ridges on those jacks?
17:09They aren't there just to make them fit when you plug them into your phone or laptop.
17:14Made out of a special insulating material, these bands are meant to guard the wires when
17:19sound is being transmitted.
17:21Based on the number of bands, you can figure out which end goes where.
17:25Having empty space under noodles in a cup doesn't mean the company producing them
17:30wants to cheat you out of a full portion.
17:32No, no!
17:33It's a manner of keeping the noodles intact during their transportation.
17:37It also helps with the circulation of hot water that is poured over the products before
17:42you can enjoy them.
17:44The V-shaped neckline was initially designed to serve a bunch of objectives.
17:48First, as a way of prolonging the life of the garment that would maintain its shape
17:52over the years.
17:53It's also there to fit your head through the shirt in case it needs some stretching.
17:58This way, it ensures a snugger grip around the neck.
18:01Lastly, it helps absorb sweat in case you're wearing the shirt while exercising.
18:07Now it's not necessarily a custom anymore, but you may have stumbled upon a dinner jacket
18:12with an additional mysterious pocket on the right side.
18:16Turns out, this pocket was used by men to easily reach their train tickets since most
18:21of them had to travel to work every day.
18:23It helped them keep their jacket buttoned up, but also benefited from the use of a pocket.
18:29Now it's only added as a decoration, and it doesn't serve an actual purpose anymore.
18:34Speaking of things we don't use these days, or at least for their initial purpose, did
18:39you know Play-Doh was originally a cleaning product?
18:43In the 1920s, the market was in need of a product that could help them wipe the wallpapered
18:48areas around coal-burning furnaces.
18:51The recipe for what we now know as Play-Doh was thus invented.
18:55It was manufactured in white only, and was supposed to clean wallpaper by being rolled
19:00back and forth over the dirt.
19:02It was only later, in the 1940s, that new products for cleaning wallpaper were brought
19:07up, and Play-Doh was redirected toward another area of the market.
19:12Now while I enjoy a nice piece of toast for breakfast, isn't it pesky to have to clean
19:18out the toaster?
19:19Well, not anymore, since I recently found out that toasters have a slide or a panel
19:24at the bottom that helps get rid of all those annoying breadcrumbs easily.
19:32Now there used to be a time when you could only have access to video games by inserting
19:36cartridges in your console of choice.
19:39These tiny objects gave many doctors a lot of headaches.
19:43People soon started popping up in hospitals after swallowing small game cartridges.
19:48Especially the younger generation.
19:51Nintendo, the company that manufactures the majority of these devices, had to come up
19:55with a creative solution to prevent these accidents.
19:59So these days, Nintendo Switch cartridges are purposely coated with specific chemicals
20:04that can leave a really bad, bitter taste in the mouth.
20:08Not that I'd, you know, recommend you ever try and taste for yourself.
20:13That's it for today!
20:14So hey, if you pacified your curiosity, then give the video a like and share it with your
20:19friends.
