With Brandon Aiyuk requesting a trade, the guys look at the top wide receiver's in the NFL today.
Transcript
00:00I'm out on trading a first rounder for Brandon Ayuk, at least a 20-25 first rounder, which
00:06is something we had actually started talking about earlier in the week before Ayuk even
00:09demanded a trade.
00:12You can't give up a potential top five, top 10 pick for Ayuk.
00:15You can't do it.
00:18And you can say, well, I mean, who's going to be better than Ayuk?
00:20Well, maybe, but you got to turn around and give Ayuk 27, 28, 30 million a year.
00:25I think Rap Sheet went on to say he'll probably make a little less than Amon Ross St. Brown
00:28in Detroit, which we'll see.
00:31But I think he's at 28 million a year, so high 20s, maybe 30 million a year for Ayuk.
00:37I feel like I can get a better receiver if that's what I want with my first round pick
00:41or a better player elsewhere on the roster.
00:43And I'd rather have a top five or a top 10 pick.
00:46So how do you get Ayuk?
00:48Would the Niners take a 20-26 first rounder?
00:51I don't know why they would when another team can give him a pick more immediately.
00:55Would they take a second in Matthew Judon or a second and a third that's a conditional
00:59third that could move up to a second, second round pick?
01:02Maybe.
01:03I mean, you can play that game, but bottom line, the Patriots are in a weird spot where
01:07I wouldn't offer my first round pick if I were them, and I highly doubt they would.
01:11And if another team offers a 20-25 first rounder, even in the 20s, that's going to beat your
01:16pick.
01:17So you're not going to have the best offer.
01:19So how do you get him?
01:20And furthermore, Arkan, do you even want him?
01:23at 3-7-90-3-7.
01:24Guys, should the Patriots be interested in someone like Ayuk?
01:28He's disgruntled than San Fran, and they just made a Super Bowl.
01:32What's going to happen when he comes to New England and they suck?
01:34So I...
01:35He's not upset with the way they play in San Francisco, it's not his problem.
01:38I think he'd be fine with coming to New England and being terrible.
01:42He's going to make $30 million a year.
01:43Guaranteed money, yeah, absolutely.
01:44Thank you.
01:45And so he's upset at his contract.
01:46He's not upset at how they use him or his targets.
01:50And if you're operating in the world of the number one stud receiver, you have to just
01:57hold your nose and put up with some of that.
01:59You have to throw them the football, keep them involved in the offense, compensate them,
02:04and that's just the world you've got to live in.
02:06And I'm okay with doing that for a real premium talent.
02:09That's not my concern with Ayuk.
02:10The complaining about the contract, in theory, you're giving him that and he'll be happy.
02:14Yeah, I mean, maybe he's a pain in the ass, I don't know.
02:17I think Steph Diggs was a pain in the ass at the end in Buffalo, and they were a good
02:20team too.
02:22And it wasn't because he wanted more money.
02:25I think he wanted to be more involved in the offense, even though he was getting all the
02:27passes.
02:28Some guy, there's different levels of pain in the ass when it comes to wide receivers
02:31or any big position like that.
02:34But just while we're on the subject here, on that ESPN wide receiver list, Brandon Ayuk
02:38is 10th.
02:39He is a top 10 wide receiver in the league by the executive scouts and coaches and everybody
02:44else who make up those lists.
02:46So that's how he's regarded in the league.
02:47A top 10 wide receiver, I think you do have to give him a first round pick.
02:51Yeah, so give me the list, I don't have it in front of me.
02:55Coming in at number one, Justin Jefferson.
02:56Number two, Tyreek Hill.
02:58Number three, Jamar Chase.
03:00Number four, CeeDee Lamb.
03:01Oh, I'd have Lamb higher, but whatever, we're nitpicking.
03:04Five, Devontae Adams.
03:05Okay, too high.
03:06Six, A.J. Brown.
03:07Okay.
03:08Seven, Amon Rossaint Brown.
03:09Too low.
03:10Eight, Mike Evans.
03:11Probably about right, yep.
03:13Nine, Steph Diggs.
03:14Uh-huh.
03:15Way too high for Diggs.
03:16Keep going.
03:1710, Ayuk.
03:18Okay.
03:19Your honorable mentions are Cooper Cupp, Debo Samuel, Garrett Wilson, Jalen Waddle, Nico
03:22Collins, Amari Cooper, and DJ Moore.
03:25Also receiving votes.
03:26Yeah, well hang on.
03:27So I would have, I like Debo better than Ayuk.
03:29That's one that I would have higher on that list, but whatever, we can quibble about where
03:31he is.
03:32Is T. Higgins anywhere on that list or no?
03:33Yes.
03:34T. Higgins was also receiving votes along with Metcalf, Keenan Allen, McLaurin, Ridley, Pukanukuwa,
03:40Pickens, Olave, Pittman, Hopkins, and Sutton.
03:43Okay, interesting.
03:44So Ridley is right around 20, maybe a little outside the top 20, which sounds about right.
03:49He'd be a number one on this team.
03:50He's probably a number two on a really good team, but that's interesting where Ridley
03:54came in.
03:55Ayuk over Higgins.
03:56I'm not sure everybody agrees with that, but I do.
03:58Ayuk is a top 10-ish receiver.
04:01I would largely agree with that.
04:03And so how often are those guys going to come available?
04:05I don't know, but give me the list again.
04:07Start at the top.
04:08Who's number one?
04:09Jefferson.
04:10Jefferson.
04:11Picked at 22, I believe, off the top of my head.
04:12Who's number two?
04:14Keep going.
04:15Something like that, yeah.
04:16Jamar Chase, number three.
04:17Okay, that was a top five pick, something like that.
04:18CD Lamb.
04:19CD Lamb was a first-rounder, but I believe in the 20s, maybe the teens, yep.
04:23Okay, Adams.
04:24Adams was a second-round pick.
04:26A.J. Brown.
04:27Second-round pick.
04:28Amanrassi and Brown.
04:29Fourth, I think, yes.
04:30Mike Evans.
04:31First, very high first-round pick, like a top 10 pick.
04:34Steph Diggs.
04:35Okay, Diggs was like a fifth-rounder?
04:37I don't remember where he was.
04:39I think that's right.
04:40And who was number 10?
04:41And number 10's Ayuk.
04:42Ayuk was in the 20s.
04:43So look, what I would say is, yeah, he's a top 10 receiver.
04:46But look at where those top 10 receivers came from.
04:48Mike Evans was the only real high draft capital.
04:52I'm sorry, and Chase.
04:53You're right.
04:54So two out of the top 10 were real high investments, top 10 picks.
04:59In the case of Chase, I think he was the number five pick off the top of my head.
05:02Some of those, there were more guys in the fifth round than there were.
05:06And so I think you can find receivers in today's day and age.
05:10I want the Patriots to get one.
05:11They had one.
05:12All they had to do was pay him.
05:13They didn't have to give up a pick in Calvin Ridley.
05:15Let me ask it that way, Arkin.
05:17Would I rather give up a first-round pick and pay Brandon Ayuk
05:21or just pay Calvin Ridley?
05:23I would rather just pay Calvin Ridley.
05:25I don't think the gap between those two is that massive.
05:28Ayuk is a better player, but I don't think the gap is so massive
05:31that I got to throw in a first-round pick when I could have had Ridley for nothing.
05:35Just cash.
05:36That's it.
05:37And that's a big part of this and a big part of why I would rather,
05:41if it was a first-round pick and you're picking in the top five or top ten even,
05:45I'd rather just draft a kid, draft a wide receiver.
05:49It's a new day right now in the wide receiver world.
05:52I think that you now have, in the first round, a lot of these guys coming out.
05:55They're much more highly coveted now, I think, than they have been in years past,
05:59even in the last five years.
06:01So I'd rather just pick a guy high and have that money,
06:05have that rookie contract, not have to trade anything,
06:08not have to give $30 million or any of that stuff,
06:11and you could just do it that way.
06:13But if it's between that and paying money for an established guy like Calvin Ridley,
06:16of course you'd rather just pay the money.
06:18Of course you would.
06:19That's my feeling on it.
06:20And so, look, I've been saying this for a while,
06:23as much as I was mocking the wide receiver list,
06:26I'm like, oh, the Patriots don't have anybody there?
06:28I've actually started to talk myself into their receiver room a little bit.
06:31And the draft capital on Jalen Polk and the early returns on him,
06:35and I haven't seen him yet, but I've heard good things from minicamp,
06:38let's see at training camp, let's see in joint practices,
06:40let's see him preseason.
06:41Obviously, let's see when the real games start and they actually start playing.
06:45But I like what I've heard, and I like the investment.
06:50So I've started to talk myself into that room a little bit,
06:52because 37, that's a pick that could hit.
06:55I mean, look at where A.J. Brown was taken.
06:57Look at some of the other guys in the second round that we were discussing before,
06:59Debo Samuel, Ayuk at the end of the first round.
07:03Look at where some of those guys went.
07:04That's in that same territory as Jalen Polk.
07:06We have to get it right.
07:08A lot of receivers went around there.
07:10Maybe it's Ladd McConkie, and it's not Jalen Polk.
07:12Maybe it's Keon Coleman, and it's not Jalen Polk.
07:15But I'm starting to talk myself into him a little bit, and their room.
07:18That doesn't mean they have one of the top 30 receivers in the NFL.
