A fugitive mat rempit was fined RM5,000 and sentenced to a day in jail by the Ayer Keroh magistrate's court in Melaka after he pleaded guilty to a reckless riding offence committed in 2017.

31-year-old Khairul Izuan Kamaruddin was charged under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 before Magistrate Sharda Shienha Mohd Suleiman on Tuesday (July 16).

00:30Khairul Izwan, who is self-employed, was first detained on June 11, 2017. However, he went
00:38missing and failed to appear in court for seven years until he was apprehended in Taiping
00:44Perak on Monday. He was found guilty of riding a motorcycle in a manner which endangered
00:49other road users along Labo-Espya Stadium, Hangjabat, on June 11, 2017, together with
00:56two other motorcyclists. All three were apprehended the same day. Earlier, Deputy Public Prosecutor
01:03Inspector Naeem Abdul Jalil requested for Khairul Izwan to given a harsh punishment
01:09due to the severity of the offence. The accused, who was unrepresented, appealed for leniency
01:15and said he needed to return to his hometown in Taiping in 2017 to care for his sick parents
01:22and disabled sister. The court also disqualified Khairul Izwan from holding a B2 motorcycle
01:28licence for five years. Khairul Izwan paid the fine.
