00:00Are you looking for something that's unique, something special, something that's different
00:04from anything out there?
00:05A lot of you guys love these rust and patina things, but it's one of those things of like
00:10what can you drive that actually works and can actually function as a daily driver?
00:15Well this is your host Primo here and we're out again at Basement Power Sports and Spike
00:19Speed Shops to show you a rust monster that may actually fit the bill.
00:30Hey everybody, welcome back, I'm your host VIP Primo and today we're checking out a very
00:48special car.
00:50We're back here at Spike's Speed Shop at Basement Power Sports in Brockton, Massachusetts and
00:54as promised I told you I was going to show you this car down the road and here we are.
01:00So what makes this car so special?
01:02Well it's pretty simple.
01:03This is really one of those cars that fits that bill of don't judge a book by its cover.
01:09The exterior for this vehicle was made to look custom, look patina, I mean look at it,
01:14it looks amazing, but internally it was made to be a daily driver.
01:20So unlike a lot of these other rust monsters that really kind of, and I don't want to say
01:24skimp, but they do things in a way that really don't allow for creature comforts.
01:29They don't think about their driver in mind.
01:32This car does.
01:33It thinks about all those little features.
01:35It thinks about the things that you as a driver would feel and it tries to figure out how
01:39easy it would be for you to experience those things as well.
01:42So what are we going to go back to today like we always do?
01:45First, what it's like to drive.
01:47Second, what would it cost to build a car like this for yourself?
01:51And third, what are the pitfalls?
01:52One of the things that has to go with maintenance and things of that nature that you're going
01:56to have to think about on your daily drive down the road.
01:58So ready guys?
01:59We're going to drive it right now.
02:07Okay guys, welcome to the inside of a 1960 Biscayne.
02:13This is a rust monster.
02:14So the big thing that you're going to see is there's not going to be any head thing,
02:18but it's not chopped.
02:19So unlike the Caddy's that we drove in the past, it's not tight on me.
02:23That's the first thing.
02:24The wheel is gigantic, so it's, I'm a big dude, so I come in and my wheels kind of scrub
02:29when I get in here, so my legs are crunched up as I come in.
02:33But once I get in, very cool, very relaxed.
02:36It's got a big bench seat in it.
02:39No door frame pieces to speak of, but it's got a little lever to open the door.
02:46The one cool thing about this, it used to be, it's still an automatic, but it used to
02:50be an automatic on the column.
02:52So now it's an automatic on the floor.
02:55So hopefully that's going to be a little bit easier for me to figure out.
02:58It is power brakes.
03:01So we have a winner compared to the last car that tried to kill me.
03:04So I don't think that this car has any intention of hurting me, but who knows, we're going
03:08to find out shortly.
03:09Okay, so I'm ready to get this thing in gear where I'm in, the thing is, I just went right
03:15into reverse.
03:17That was way too, it was easier than my car to go into reverse.
03:20Okay, so I'm going to do the old lean back thing, making sure the front end, this thing
03:25is long, but it's not as long as the ones we've driven before.
03:30Oh, I love that.
03:36We're already getting loose, guys.
03:37That brake pedal's high, oh my God.
03:41It's so funny that this thing is archaic, but it feels like generalized, like it just
03:46works.
03:47This wheel is giant.
03:48It's huge.
03:49Like turning it is like, it gives a lot more angle to the turn, but the blinker lights
03:56unsnap normally.
03:57They feel nice and smooth.
03:58The car has a lot of power.
03:59One thing that I love about these automatics is that they have a long stroke before the
04:07car starts making power, and it's a time for them to get really noisy, so if you hear
04:12that revving sound that's coming out, it's that second before it decides to shift and
04:16just take off on you.
04:20There we go.
04:25Was that loud enough?
04:28The other thing is it feels really well balanced.
04:31The air ride system, and we've said this before, air ride systems do a great job of balancing
04:37things out.
04:38They make them feel natural and normal.
04:41It's something that I think a lot of cars should kind of think about when they're doing
04:46something with these, is consider an air ride system if you don't already have one.
04:51The displays on these are also huge.
04:53They're so easy to read, so easy to get used to.
04:57I know where everything is at.
04:59I definitely jumped right in this and just...
05:07Drives like a breeze.
05:09You guys would love this.
05:11There's not much difference between this car and the car you're going to daily drive.
05:16I know that sounds really weird and really awkward.
05:18There's a lot of things that have changed in this car that doesn't match the outside.
05:23The internals and the working parts of this drive like a new car, but the outside of it
05:29looks custom, looks patina, looks special.
05:37There's a speed limit in here.
05:40Why would the speed limit be enough to me to kick this?
05:44This 5.3 liter, she's got some sack in there she's hiding, I know.
05:53So these automatics are very intuitive about shifting and doing stuff.
05:57It makes it so you can just enjoy the drive.
06:00Oh yeah, I can daily drive this thing.
06:02It just feels so weird saying that too, because if you look at it on the exterior, it's not a car
06:08that would look like it's daily driving.
06:10Okay, so we got a really sharp turn here.
06:13I've taken it a lot easier than I would normally if it was my car.
06:17But handling it, no problem.
06:20Didn't feel any sway in the body, no body roll.
06:23Nice and soft.
06:25Handling it, no problem.
06:26Didn't feel any sway in the body, no body roll.
06:29Nice and solid, sure-footed.
06:31This is the kind of car I feel like, even though it looks the way it looks, that I can
06:35put a set of racing tires on it and take it out to the track.
06:39Oil pressure, temp, fuel, volts.
06:44Man, I got everything in here.
06:46If it wasn't for copyright infringements, I'd let you guys listen to the sound system too.
06:50It's incredible.
06:51I want to add too, before this drive is over, this shifter that's in here, it is a park
06:58first neutral drive setup.
07:00Just like any other automatic car, it is the easiest shifter I've ever shifted.
07:06Like, bar none, better than any car I've ever driven with.
07:11How responsive it is.
07:14Man, just enjoying my Sunday drive.
07:17Alright, so we're back at the shop.
07:20I am very excited to review this.
07:46Okay guys, so what is it like to drive?
07:50I'm going to say it, I've never been so impressed with a car.
07:54Exterior-wise, custom perfection.
07:57Sounds amazing, feels amazing.
08:00Internally driving though, it's one of the easiest cars I've ever driven.
08:04In fact, I think this car internally is easier to drive than most new cars that I've driven.
08:09How frightening is that?
08:11To be able to get into something and say, hey, custom-wise, we can make a car that's
08:15better than new.
08:17I find that impressive and I find that awesome at the same time.
08:21Okay, so what are the positives of it?
08:23Pretty easy.
08:24Simplicity to drive.
08:25The shifter is easy to shift.
08:27In fact, it was probably the easiest thing I've ever shifted in my life.
08:31Felt very stable on the road.
08:33Drive quality was easily a 9 or a 10.
08:36Everything about this section, the bench seats.
08:39This is something that we've lost in the world of having a bench seat to sit under.
08:43And realizing that it's like driving a sofa.
08:45The problems that we had back then were really that the cars that we drove delisted.
08:49They weren't made to be as luxury as people like to let on to.
08:53They really didn't feel like luxury.
08:55This feels like luxury.
08:57And it really made me want to get back into a bench seat because of how nice and fluffy it felt.
09:02The last thing is the digital gauges.
09:04There's nothing tricky about it.
09:06Just look at the digital gauges.
09:07They're right there.
09:08There's obviously the old school dials that you have so you can view that.
09:12But also the little digital pieces.
09:14The odometer.
09:15The speeds.
09:16The little things that go into it that kind of give it that new feel were incredible.
09:20Now one thing that we didn't get to go over which I think is probably one of the best features in the car.
09:24Is it has a Bluetooth stereo system.
09:26You can see from the videos here it doesn't look like anything special about the radio system.
09:32But listening to it.
09:33Playing it.
09:34It's incredible interior wise.
09:35Like I said, I wish I could play it in a way to capture it for you guys.
09:38But it is incredible.
09:40You've got to take my word for it.
09:41If not, come down to Spikes.
09:42Check it out for yourself.
09:43You will not be disappointed.
09:45So what are the negatives of this car?
09:47The steering wheel was really big.
09:49For a big guy like me sitting in that steering wheel just hitting my legs.
09:52Getting in and getting out.
09:54I did bump my head getting out because of the curvature of the roof system.
09:58Those are things you would get used to.
10:01The thing that you probably wouldn't get used to is the droning sound when it comes to the exhaust.
10:06A lot of people would say it would put a little bit more of a quiet exhaust on.
10:10The good thing is all those negatives are something you're either going to get used to or you can fix.
10:15You don't like a big steering wheel?
10:16Go with a smaller steering wheel.
10:17Don't like that droning sound?
10:19Do something with the exhaust so it's not a loud exhaust.
10:21But I definitely would daily drive this.
10:24And that I think today, if there's anything that we've learned from this experience.
10:28It's again, it's another car I want to buy.
10:31It's another car that I would like to own.
10:33And it's something that, like I said, take it to work every day.
10:36Drive it.
10:38The tires are probably going to be cheaper than anything you've ever purchased before on the upkeep.
10:42I mean, seriously, how much do you have to wash a car that has rust on it?
10:46I mean, it probably would actually add character.
10:48So even in that case, you're set to go.
10:51Okay, so how much would it cost to own something just like this?
10:54Well, the easy part is finding the car.
10:56That's going to be $2,500 to $3,000 at most.
11:00There's a lot of cars out there that you can find that, you know, probably the same kind of condition
11:05that somebody would want to get off their lot for whatever.
11:08You don't have to get something perfect.
11:10Do make sure that you have a car that has a good frame to it.
11:13That has a good sound internal structure.
11:15Because you don't want to get something that you can't build off that platform.
11:18Or you have to restore the entire body.
11:20But that's what I'm saying.
11:22Just find something that's solid. That's it.
11:24Find something in an area that doesn't have a lot of rust in it.
11:26There's a good chance that you're going to find something good.
11:28And you can get creative with it.
11:30Now, the aftermarket stuff is going to be a little bit more expensive.
11:33This car has disc brakes all the way around.
11:36Something that I would highly recommend.
11:38This has the air ride system, which is highly recommended.
11:41With the sound system and all the other things added in,
11:44not counting if you have an engine in it or if you do have an engine,
11:47it's going to sway one way or the other.
11:49So I would say anywhere from $10,000 to $15,000 to do something like this.
11:53And this is something that Spike's Speed Shop obviously excels at.
11:57You can go either way.
11:59You could say, hey, I'm going to put a lot of this stuff in it.
12:01Or I'm going to put a little bit less.
12:03You don't have to go too crazy.
12:05Maybe you want to keep the shifter on the column.
12:07I don't know. Whatever you want to do.
12:09But like I said, especially with the air ride,
12:11the air ride is probably the big thing at probably around $7,500.
12:14But like I said, with putting anything else into it,
12:17$10,000 to $15,000 to have this car the way it is.
12:21So that really is not that big a deal.
12:24That's less than most of these big cars out here you're going to buy new.
12:28I don't see why more people don't look into cars like this.
12:31Have a project. Have somebody who puts it together.
12:34And like I said, either Weekend Warrior or Daily Driver,
12:38a car you bring to the show or a car you just enjoy,
12:41this car is going to make the grade.
12:43Okay, so what is the upkeep like?
12:45Well, this is the fun part because this has a 5.3 liter engine in it.
12:49It's a famous Chevy engine.
12:52It's one of those engines that people put in all their cars.
12:55And there's a reason why they put it in their cars because it's a strong engine.
12:59It's one of those engines you don't have to do a lot of upkeep.
13:02So if you can do oil changes, if you can, I don't know,
13:06change transmission fluid, whatever you want,
13:08there's not going to be a lot of maintenance with that side of it.
13:11So that's it for us here, what it's like to drive.
13:14This car was amazing.
13:16I have to say Spikes Speed Shop needs to be really proud of what they did with this.
13:22Few cars that I have driven have lived up to the hype that this car has.
13:27This thing met or exceeded every expectation I have.
13:30The only negatives I have to this are really just personal things.
13:35They have nothing to do with the overall aesthetics of the car.
13:38Overall, this car is easily a 10 and I have no problem saying that whatsoever.
13:43So like I said, these guys should be proud of it.
13:45They've already said we need to come back out and check out some of their other cars
13:49before we even gave them positive reviews.
13:51If this is what they did on a whim,
13:54I definitely want to come out for something that they've put 100% into with a design team
14:00and really thrown their insanity into one single vehicle.
14:03I myself cannot wait to do it.
14:06So like I said, thank you guys for tuning in.
14:08I want to thank you guys for enjoying this 1960 Biscayne with us.
14:11So guys, don't forget to check out some of these other videos.
14:14Don't forget to hit the like and subscribe button.
14:16Don't forget to hit the bell because you don't want to miss any of these future cars
14:19because we're going to be out again on the lookout for the next awesome car,
14:23the next awesome upgrade, the next big thing.
14:26And then we're going to show you what it's like to drive.
