00:00Hey guys, I'm here at Function Automotive today to test a very cool car, a car that's
00:15a piece of history, a muscle car, but not just any muscle car, a muscle car that's made
00:21to get you around the world, a muscle car that's made to drive.
00:25Today we're going to be looking at the Cruiser.
00:33Today we're going to look at a piece of history.
00:36This is a 1967 Camaro RS SS, that stands for Rally Sport Super Sport.
00:43I know it's a lot of letters, but trust me, just catch up with me, this is going to be
00:47worth every minute of it.
00:49So this vehicle has a lot of history.
00:50It dates all the way back to this first vehicle.
00:53This vehicle was made to compete against the Mustang, and it's still in production
00:57today, and it has quite the history.
01:00So this is kind of the starting point of where everything came from, and it's very exciting
01:05to kind of take this car out and cruise it, unlike some of the other cars that we've done
01:10that are made to be drag cars, or rally cars, or race cars, this car has no aspirations
01:16other than getting from point A to point B, and in the most cruising way possible.
01:22This car is an automatic, and I know a lot of people will say, automatic, and they get
01:26a little bad.
01:27A lot of cars back then, especially when they wanted to cruise, were automatic.
01:31So this car is also a show car.
01:34It's done a lot of events.
01:35It actually just won second place in its last event that it was out to.
01:39So that's the thing is, I'm really looking forward to not only having a car that just
01:42sits there and shows, but actually drives around and can get from point A to point B.
01:47What are we going to review today?
01:48First we're going to see what it's like to drive.
01:50Second, we're going to look at the cost, what's associated with getting this vehicle.
01:55And third, we're going to look at some pitfalls, some things that you may be willing to, you
02:00got to get ahead of before you purchase a vehicle like this, and what things are going
02:04to happen once you own it.
02:06But regardless of what we say, I am really looking forward to driving this car, and I'm
02:10sure a lot of you Chevy guys are too.
02:12So here we go.
02:20All right, so I'm in right now.
02:24I've checked all my mirrors.
02:26I look really good.
02:27I can see everything really clearly.
02:29My peripheral vision, I'm actually kind of shocked at how well it is to see around.
02:34I got a nice roll bar behind my head.
02:36I kind of bumped my head from time to time on it, but that's okay.
02:38I feel a lot safer in the car.
02:41One thing I noticed right off the bat was this car is solid.
02:45It feels very metal.
02:46A lot of cars today, you get into them and they feel plastic.
02:49They feel fake, like they're going to ramble around, and when I get in this, it's hard
02:53edges.
02:54The seat's stout.
02:56It's made to fit me.
02:57So when I'm ready to drive, I feel like I'm in the seat and I'm ready to go.
03:01I hope I'm in the right gear there.
03:03Oh, one more.
03:05Aha.
03:06See, I messed that up.
03:07I even got in the wrong gear.
03:09All right.
03:10That's the other thing.
03:11This is an automatic, so you're not going to be worrying much about being able to shift
03:16gears or do anything like that.
03:18When I did, like on the drag car build, I had to really worry where my gearing was.
03:22This one, not so much.
03:24I feel a lot more at ease driving like this.
03:27It's very fluid, very linear.
03:29I love that about this car, and this isn't beating me up very bad at all.
03:34The suspension is lowered as low as it can possibly get without worrying about scrapes
03:39and things of that nature.
03:41We do have a little spots where I'm kind of paying attention to the road, and since it's
03:45not a stick shift, I can pay attention more to the road.
03:53Cruising wise, top 10 ace marks on it.
03:57Comfort wise, it's in the lower marks, unfortunately, but that's just how cars like these are going
04:02to be.
04:03Usually, with the suspension, the way it's set up, it's going to be a little bit more
04:07rough.
04:08You're probably going to see me bouncing around a little bit.
04:10If you're looking for that comfortable drive, then maybe that Cadillac is the car for you.
04:14If you're not looking for something, you want something with power, then this is definitely
04:18what you want to look into.
04:20I have to say, of all the other cars, this is the first one I've ever driven that I really
04:25am not paying attention to anything but what I'm doing driving.
04:29I think the idea of focusing on that driving experience, this car is made to be driven.
04:35It's not made to drag race.
04:36It's not made to do other things.
04:38If you want to take it to a show, you can take it to a show.
04:41If you just want it for a weekend, you can do it on a weekend, and it'll do it, and it
04:45does it very proficiently.
04:47I really feel like that I could cruise with this car for long distances and get to shows.
04:53This car is actually driven to all its events, and that's what I think is really great about
04:58it.
04:59If there's one thing that I can say that excites me about a car, it's when somebody says, not
05:03only do I enjoy it, not only does it look cool, but I can drive it.
05:06I can have fun with it.
05:08This is the kind of car that you want to own.
05:11A little bit of gas.
05:15The last thing that I want to say about this car is the feel and sound of something like
05:21this.
05:22This is a 355.
05:25It's got an engine in it that is traditional for this type of vehicle.
05:30That kind of traditional feel, traditional sound, everything about it is, if you really
05:36want that piece of history, and you want to feel what it felt like to own this car
05:40if it was brand new right out of the showroom, this is probably how you're going to set it
05:45up.
05:46Having that automatic in it, it's just a great opportunity.
05:49This car has been a joy to drive.
05:52There's something about the history of Camaro that has something that I think not a lot
05:57of other cars have.
05:58It has a long and drawn out history.
06:01This is really where it got its start, is right here in this chassis, driving around,
06:07just having fun.
06:11Okay, so what is this car like to drive?
06:23It is indeed a cruiser, but it's not a cruiser in the standard sense.
06:28It's a cruiser in the muscle car sense.
06:30A lot of people are going, well what the hell does that mean?
06:32What's a cruiser in the muscle car sense?
06:35Solid.
06:36Solid driving, just something metal about the car.
06:39The kind of car that you're just going to drive and flex your muscle.
06:43It's something that muscle cars in general just really excel at, and that is it feels
06:49sure-footed on the road.
06:51It doesn't feel like it wants to waver from side to side.
06:53It feels like it's going to go straight when it wants to go straight.
06:56It doesn't feel like it's going to bend or flex.
06:59I feel very safe in the vehicle, and it definitely felt like the car I wanted to cruise in.
07:04So if you're looking for luxury level comfort, this is not the car for you.
07:08But if you need something that's raw, that will not apologize to you, that will get on
07:12the road and both give you power when you need it, or just cruise when you need it,
07:17just going down the strip at 40, 30 to 40 miles per hour, then this car will do both
07:21those jobs.
07:23One other thing that I really felt about it is I felt very proud being in the seat.
07:27I felt like I could go to a car show, show this car off, and if people liked it, they
07:31liked it, and if they didn't like it, no big deal.
07:34It was a car that makes a statement, and it's very definitive.
07:38And that's something that you can't get out of a lot of cars, even today, which I think
07:42is kind of sad actually, but that's the reason that these cars have lasted and withstood
07:48the test of time over and over, is because their ability to cover all these different
07:52things and be very solid cars.
07:55I was very happy with my drive.
07:58Okay, so what is the cost to own one of these?
08:00Well, if you were looking for one of these in the 80s and the 90s, you're probably going
08:04to have no problems whatsoever.
08:06If you're looking for one today, the prices can really vary.
08:10A car like this could easily go for $40,000 or more in the condition it sits.
08:15If you want to get a fixer-upper, I'm sure you're going to spend a little bit less, but
08:19even then, everybody today is asking big money for cars like this, especially the first year
08:24of production.
08:25So it's one of those things of just do your research, try to understand what you're getting
08:29into and make an educated decision.
08:33Don't try to land on the first car.
08:35Do not be in a rush to buy a car like this.
08:37Make sure that when you're getting into this, you know what you're getting into 100%.
08:41Now the first thing that was done to this was a high-revving engine that was rebuilt
08:46that was done to it.
08:47That was actually done by the previous owner, so I don't know the cost to it, but obviously
08:52when you're building a car like this, the engine is kind of the primary thought that
08:55goes into it.
08:57You want to build it for the job that it's doing.
09:00Cars that are drag racers are not always as good when it comes to cruising and vice versa,
09:05so a little thinking goes into what you're going to do for the engine.
09:08You could do the engine that came in it, so it makes life easier, but like I said, you
09:12may want to go up to a different engine.
09:13So I'd like to put a number on it, but it really depends on what you want to do with
09:17the car, and these cars have a lot of options.
09:20The next thing is obviously suspension.
09:23Suspension is going to be important.
09:24Again, this vehicle was lifted just enough so that it would be comfortable on the road
09:28and lower just enough so it would be fun to drive in low slung.
09:32Something like that could be $4,000 to $5,000.
09:34Other people could do air ride or different things of that nature, and the price could
09:38go up depending on how you want to do it.
09:41Next is the interior, which is going to be important.
09:44If you want to cruise, your interior better be spot on.
09:47He purchased his seats for about $400.
09:51Seats today can go upwards of $2,000.
09:53It really depends on how much you want to put in the vehicle.
09:56If you picked up a good car from the beginning and you spent the $40,000, you may be doing
10:01zero work, but if you picked up a car that's say in the cheaper range, you're definitely
10:06going to have to put some money into it because somebody somewhere didn't take care of it.
10:10That's the thing is you can inherit these cars with problems and you don't want to do
10:14that because it's going to take more time to work on unless you're the kind of guy that
10:18likes to turn wrenches.
10:20In that case, that may be the project for you.
10:22And the parts, I mean they're Camaros.
10:24There's a lot of them, so chances are you're going to have a good time finding parts.
10:28That's kind of the easy part.
10:30So what's the maintenance like?
10:31What's the pitfalls of a vehicle like this?
10:34It's easy.
10:35You've got to do all changes.
10:36You're going to do tires and you're going to do brakes, and even that's going to be
10:39dependent on what you put into the vehicle, how you drive the vehicle.
10:43On a whole, there's a reason that people love these cars.
10:47There's not a lot of electrical or mechanical things that can break on them.
10:51They're just very straightforward.
10:53These are the kind of cars that taught people to be mechanics, so why not be easy?
10:59That's the thing with the pitfalls too.
11:01There's really nothing to report on these.
11:03If you built it right from the get-go, you're probably not going to be fixing a lot of stuff
11:07on it because with the frames the way they are, they're very solid.
11:11It's a car that's just going to be reliable over and over.
11:14Now, if you're going to do it for show, there's one thing I'm going to suggest investing in,
11:19and that's a cleaning kit, and please do not go weak on these.
11:24A lot of these old paints can be very tough to upkeep, so if you kept the old paint on
11:28it, you may have problems with talc and rust and things of that nature.
11:32If you repainted it, you're still going to want it to look good, and I'm telling you,
11:35the roads out here are just crazy and nasty, so they can do very bad things to your vehicle.
11:42Other than that, just get in the driver's seat and drive.
11:44Hey guys, thanks for tuning in to What It's Like to Drive.
11:46That's it for me today.
11:47Hey Animal, did you like it?
11:50Animal loved it, and I hope you guys loved it too.
11:53If you want to see more of this car, you can see it at WaynesWorldPhotography.com.
11:58We're going to put this information below as well as in the description so you can find
12:02it easier.
12:03I want to thank them today for bringing out the vehicle and letting me enjoy a classic
12:08piece of history.
12:10It was a lot of fun.
12:11I hope that you guys out there will consider owning a vehicle like this.
12:15It is something that I don't think anybody, if they do the right research up front, can
12:20regret.
12:21Oh, and don't forget, here's some other videos over here.
12:23Thank you guys for tuning in.
12:24We're going to continue our search for the next car, and as always, don't forget to drive.
