00:00Located just an hour to the south of Tokyo in a prefecture of the same name, Kamakura
00:16is a lovely laid-back coastal town with lots for visitors to see and do.
00:21Although it is now somewhat hard to imagine, the small city was once the nation's capital
00:26all the way back in feudal times.
00:29Around 1200-1300 AD, it was the most populous settlement in Japan.
00:35Due to its former power and prestige, it boasts lots of Buddhist temples, Shinto shrines,
00:40and important historical monuments.
00:44Today we share the top 10 best things to do in Kamakura so you can plan a trip and experience
00:49all the exciting attractions and activities this beautiful city has to offer.
00:56Starting with number 10, Great Buddha of Kamakura.
01:02Towering to a height of 13.35 meters, the Great Buddha of Kamakura is the second-largest
01:08bronze statue in the country and the most famous and iconic site in the city.
01:13Once housed in a cavernous temple hall, it now lies exposed to the elements in the grounds
01:17of Kodokan Temple after a tsunami swept away the building around it in 1498.
01:24Built in 1252, the magnificent statue has long attracted visitors to the city.
01:29On any given day, you will see throngs of tourists clustered around taking photos of
01:34it.
01:35If gazing upon its peaceful features isn't enough, you can even take a look inside to
01:39see how it was put together.
01:45At number 9 is the Heizera Temple.
01:52Standing on a hillside overlooking Kamakura, Heizera is blessed with one of the best views
01:56of the city, and its temple and grounds are no less beautiful to gaze upon.
02:02Its pretty ponds and tree-filled gardens lend it a very serene and peaceful ambience, and
02:06a number of wonderful statues can be found scattered here and there.
02:12Although there is lots of fantastic architecture on display in the shape of temples and shrines,
02:17Heizera's main draw is its famous 9-meter high cannon statue.
02:22Known as the Goddess of Mercy, it is said to be one of the largest wooden carved statues
02:26in the country.
02:29At number 8, Surugaka Hakamengu Shrine.
02:37The most important Shinto shrine in the city, Surugaka Hakamengu Shrine lies right at the
02:42geographical and cultural center of Kamakura and is hard to miss when wandering around.
02:49Founded in 1063, the shrine was moved to its current location in 1180 and is dedicated
02:54to Hachiman the patron god of the Kamakura shogunate and the god of war.
03:00To reach the shrine, visitors must walk along an extended approach that takes them from
03:05the city's waterfront, beneath numerous torii gates, and between two ponds to its entrance.
03:14At number 7, Hokkakuji Temple.
03:23Located in the east of the city, Hokkakuji Temple is a very tranquil and peaceful place
03:27to visit.
03:28It is primarily known for the beautiful bamboo grove that lies just behind its main hall.
03:34Meandering their way through the thick bamboo are a couple of lovely paths for you to wander
03:38along.
03:40At one end of the grove, there is a traditional tea house at which you can grab a cup of mat
03:44cha tea.
03:46Besides its bamboo garden, there is a fabulous statue of the Buddha for you to gaze upon
03:50in its main hall, as well as a distinctive-looking bell tower.
03:56The temple also often goes by the name of Takedara named after an artist who created
04:00a famous statue of Kashyap, a Vedic sage of Hinduism.
04:07At number 6 in our list, Enoshima Island.
04:14On the tiny island of Enoshima, the shrines far outnumber the residents.
04:18At the bottom-most level, you'll find restaurants and street food stalls selling all manner
04:23of fresh seafood.
04:25Make sure you try the pressed octopus cracker called teikosenbei, which goes squee when
04:30it's pressed into shape.
04:32Each level of the island is beautiful in its own right, but the top is truly astounding.
04:37Named a sea candle, a structure sits at the highest point of the island, working as a
04:41lighthouse for boats, a viewpoint for tourists, and a cell phone tower for everyone.
04:50At number 5, Inamiragasaki Park & Beach.
04:57Inamiragasaki Park is picturesque every second of every day even when it rains, it truly
05:02shines at sunset.
05:04The park is right on the beach and includes a gigantic rocky overhang that gently slopes
05:09into dramatic crashing waves.
05:12Photographers flock to this rock to catch a shot of Mt. Fuji framed by the setting sun.
05:17At number 4, Kencho-ji Temple.
05:25The oldest Zen temple in the whole country, Kencho-ji was completed in 1253 and is still
05:31in use today.
05:32Although over the centuries it lost many of its buildings to fierce fires, there is still
05:37an astounding array of different temples and sub-temples for you to explore.
05:42These are set among some absolutely stunning grounds.
05:45Wandering around Kencho-ji is a very peaceful affair.
05:51Some of its main attractions include Sanmon Gate and its Temple Bell, both of which are
05:55national treasures.
05:59Further inside the sprawling complex are the equally attractive halls of Butsuden, Hado,
06:05and Hojo, all of which are replete with lovely art and architecture.
06:11At number 3 in our list, Kamachi-dori.
06:18Home to an intoxicating mix of sights, sounds, and smells, Kamachi-dori the beating heart
06:24of the city threatens at times to overwhelm your senses.
06:30Running through the center of Kamakura, the popular shopping street is lined by some 250
06:35shops, restaurants, cafes, and boutiques, all calling out for you to stop and enter.
06:41As such, it is a great place to grab a bite to eat, a cup of tea, or buy souvenirs.
06:47Bustling with life, Kamachi-dori is a fun but chaotic place to explore, and the alleys
06:52to either side of it have just as many hidden gems for you to discover.
07:00At number 2, Mount Fiji.
07:08From the top, you can catch a superb view of Mt. Fuji and limitless views of the ocean
07:12and beyond.
07:13If you've got time to spare, there is an incredible onsen and spa on the island with both traditional
07:19split onsen baths and mixed outdoor hot pools that require a bathing suit.
07:24The indoor onsen includes a carbonated pool, so if you've ever had the desire to soak in
07:29a fizzy drink, this is your chance.
07:34Check out the number one places in our list, Shikaragahama Beach.
07:42Although you unfortunately can't go swimming at Shikaragahama Beach, it is still a very
07:46pleasant place to kick back and relax.
07:49On clear days, you can enjoy a majestic view of Mount Fuji rising in the distance.
07:55Now overlooked by a road that runs along the top of its seawall, the beach's dark sands
08:00have long attracted visitors to their shores, and over the centuries, it has featured in
08:05many Ukiyo-e prints and paintings.
08:08Due to its rough waves, it is a popular beach among surfers and windsurfers.
08:13On any given day, you'll see lots of them bobbing about on the water.
