00:00What's going on everybody, this is HighlandHopperTV coming to you from the Alamo City, San Antonio,
00:18Texas.
00:19Let's do it.
00:20Alright, here we go, dialing it in right into the central part of Texas, right here where
00:26the desert meets the actual green lush part of Texas in San Antonio, you can see right
00:33here.
00:34What we're going to do is show you around the Riverwalk, take you guys out to Six Flags
00:39and SeaWorld, show you around that area, give you a little bit of information about that,
00:43walk around the downtown area.
00:45And San Antonio is actually the 7th largest city in the United States in terms of population
00:50with 1.5 million people, but if you look at the entire metro area, it's number 24 with
00:552.5 million people living in the metro area.
00:58So this plaza you see behind me was actually set up and established in 1790 to 1890, so
01:05this area right here was a part of a new world colonization for the Spaniards.
01:16As many of you already know, this part of San Antonio was originally part of Mexico
01:23after the Mexican-American War, this area was ceded over to the United States after
01:28the United States had won that war.
01:31Now, the Battle of the Alamo is an important piece of history to remember here because
01:37actually at the Battle of the Alamo was where General Santa Anna and his Mexican soldiers
01:43stormed the Alamo, killed Davy Crockett and the settlers in that area which we'll talk
01:48about a little later on when we show you the Alamo.
01:52Long story short though, the Battle of the Alamo was what ultimately led to the establishment
01:57of the Republic of Texas, which ultimately became a part of the United States.
02:03And that is why San Antonio is called the Alamo City.
02:07So as you know, there's a waterfront here, the name is Plaza de las Islas, which is the
02:15name of this plaza, around the actual waterfront, the river.
02:30So what we're going to do now is actually go down to the river.
02:37Now this river was actually built by Portuguese settlers from Madera Island in the middle
02:43of the Atlantic, which we will touch on a little bit later in this travel guide of San
02:47Antonio.
02:48If you guys are enjoying this guide so far, please do hit the like button and consider
02:52subscribing to Island Hopper TV as we continue to show you guys around San Antonio.
02:58Now when I say this river was built by the settlers from Portugal, I mean the actual
03:03riverfront.
03:05This river, the San Antonio River, originates in Central Texas.
03:13So what you have here is a barge landing, if you look right behind me, you can see a
03:17barge tour.
03:18They'll take you around and tell you all about the San Antonio riverfront history.
03:26Now on this day we visited San Antonio, there was a lot of rainstorms, heavy rain actually,
03:32it was almost flooding the whole area of San Antonio, and then later on in the daytime
03:37it dried up.
03:38With that being said, the climate in San Antonio is a subtropical, humid climate.
03:43So it is damp, wet air in the summertime, in July, 85-90 degrees quite commonly.
03:50So it's hot and damp, like a sauna at times, but for the most part still a very temperate
03:57climate, nice climate I would say.
04:01Now walking around the downtown area you can see it is hustling and bustling.
04:06This area really does get a lot of people, especially on the weekends.
04:10So when you're headed down to the riverfront, expect crowds.
04:14What we're going to do now is actually head towards the main riverfront area and show
04:18you guys down there.
04:19But right now we're just kind of walking around the actual downtown area, the streets, and
04:25showing you guys what it looks like up top.
05:36So we're on Commerce Street and the Riverwalk, as you can see, lots of area to walk.
05:40Let's go down there and take a look.
05:50And when you head down to the actual Riverwalk, you can expect to find hotels, restaurants.
05:57Might want to make a reservation and plan ahead for those restaurants though, as I did
06:02notice that they were booked out, sometimes 35-45 minute waits, at least at many of the
06:09premier restaurants in prime time, 5-7, 8 o'clock at night.
06:15Now beyond that, you will also find these barge tours and lots of different unique architecture.
06:24But like I said, down here on the riverfront it gets very congested, lots of people.
06:32This river nowadays is more like a canal system than it is actually a river because
06:50there is no muddy banks or grassy knolls on either side where there's wildlife.
06:55It's really just a canal system inside of a city that they call the San Antonio River.
07:02When I said that they did kind of form this place by creating the riverfront and the waterfront,
07:08they really did.
07:09They dug out some of these areas to make it more of an inviting place for people to go
07:14down there and visit.
07:15And thank you to those people from Portugal who did build that.
07:31Now if you did want to take a river shuttle or a narrated cruise, I will tell you the
07:52prices here.
07:53It is $13.50 for a narrated cruise for ages 6-64, so there's no real benefits if you're
07:59young or old.
08:01But if you are aged 1-5, which none of you more than likely are, but you might have some
08:07kids, they get on board for $7.50.
08:10Narrated cruise for senior admission is $10.50 and military does get a discount at $10.50
08:16also.

10:30If you decided you wanted to actually walk around the entire riverfront area, it would
10:35take probably a half a day.
10:37There is a lot of ground to cover around this canal system, or river system as they
10:42call it.
10:43But, it can be done in half a day, depending on how aggressive you wanted to get with the
10:48walking.
10:49But, more peaceful areas in some parts, and then more bustling and busy areas in others.

12:43Alright guys, we finally made it to the Alamo.
12:45A famous battle was fought here in 1836 on March 6th.
12:49It was between the Mexican Army with General Santa Anna.
12:54And, you may know some famous Americans who were here, like Davy Crockett.
12:58Unfortunately for the Americans, they were wiped out by the Mexican Army on that day.

13:19And, if you actually wanted to go inside the Alamo to see the church and the actual compound

14:35Alright, if you guys look right behind me here, you can see the Tower of the Americas.
14:39That's a 750-foot observation deck you can go to the top of and get 360 degrees of San Antonio.

20:28Here's an interesting fact about San Antonio that not too many people know.
20:32The Canary Islanders were the ones who built that riverway system.
20:36They're Portuguese.
20:38So if you look over here, you can see at the courthouse they have a document that talks about the Canary Islanders
20:44who originally were the first settlers in this area that were non-missionary.
