00:00What's going on everybody, this is IslandHopperTV and today we're coming to you from San Diego,
00:19California.
00:20Yes, you do need to wear a mask as often as possible, but when I'm talking here, I'm not
00:24going to be wearing it as often.
00:26But here we are at the historic part of San Diego.
00:29We'll go down here tonight.
00:30Also, if you look right over here, you'll see we have the convention center.
00:37And just behind you, you will see the Petco Park.
00:42Yeah, so here's a couple of facts or things to know about San Diego.
01:02Right over here is the naval shipyard where they have the amphibious assault ships and
01:06over here on Coronado Island, you'll see the aircraft carriers.
01:10So this here is San Diego Harbor, okay, this whole area is very naval, lots of Navy activity
01:16out here, submarines and whatnot.
01:19San Diego is one of the top cities in America.
01:22So when you come here, just know you're in one of the best places in America to visit.
01:26Let's keep going.
01:32In case you're wondering, San Diego actually has a population of 1.4 million in the actual
01:44city.
01:45But if you go outside into the metro areas, which include Ocean Beach and all those other
01:50suburbs, La Jolla and whatnot, you're actually looking at about 3.5 million people in the
01:55San Diego metro area.
01:57So it is a pretty big city.
01:58San Diego alone is the eighth largest city in America.
02:01All right, so here we are in downtown at Seaport Village.
02:12We're going to walk around, show you guys what Seaport Village has going on.
02:28Yeah, so out here in San Diego Harbor, as I said earlier, they got a lot of maritime
02:40traffic, air traffic also for the military because Coronado Naval Air Station is right
02:45across the harbor here.
02:48Beautiful place, but Seaport Village, you can take it all in right here, eat right here,
02:52watch the sunset, watch the Navy ships go by.
03:02So basically they asked the tuna fishermen to help out the Navy during World War II after
03:07Pearl Harbor.
03:08Look at this USS Midway Museum right here with all those aircraft on top of it.
03:11That's a museum.
03:12You can go inside there.
03:16Yeah, so if you come down here to the USS Midway Museum, you'll notice directly behind
03:26me, if you look way out there on the horizon, you can see the sailor kissing his girlfriend
03:32or wife after coming home from World War II.
03:35You want to go to Coronado on that boat?
03:39Let's do it.
03:45Yeah, so here we are going across the San Diego Harbor going to Coronado, but you can
03:59see beautiful downtown San Diego.
04:01There's the convention center, the harbor bridge right over here.
04:04So it takes about five to 10 minutes, costs $5 per person each way.
04:11So round trip for two people, $20.
04:29Oh yeah, and if you're new to this channel, subscribe, turn on the bell, get notified
04:34when we make a new video and go to the homepage.
04:37We've got lots of videos from all across America, a whole playlist and around the world.
04:41So you might want to just check those out too.
04:43And if you like this video, crush the like button up.
04:46Thanks to all you who like the video.
04:56All right, so here we are on B Avenue in Orange.
04:59This is downtown Coronado, a lot of eateries over here.
05:03All right, so here we are across the street from the hotel Coronado, beautiful hotel.
05:09We're going to go there next, but first we're going to go get some Mexican food.
05:15We got the orange juice margarita.
05:22Perfect.
05:23Here is ceviche.
05:25It's raw shrimp, oysters, scallops, I prefer scallops and fish.
05:30It's all raw.
05:33Mmm, I absolutely love ceviche.
05:44All right, so as you can see, I'm standing in front of the hotel Del Coronado, established, built in 1888.
05:51It was the single largest hotel in all the world when it was built.
05:56It's one of the few remaining hotels from the Victorian era here in Southern California.
06:02It was registered by the National Historic Landmarks Registry in 1977.
06:09So this here is a historic monument.
06:13What a beauty. Let's go check her out.
06:26Let's go.
06:56So as you can see behind me, there is a lot of white sand beach on Coronado Island.
07:26So you can go all the way up towards Point Loma, towards the Naval Air Station, or south down towards Silver Strand.
07:34Lots of white sand beach up and down here, right outside of Coronado Island by the Hotel Del Coronado.
07:56You know something that's really nice about San Diego and this whole area down in Southern California,
08:01is it's like a Mediterranean tropical, subtropical climate.
08:04So you get lots of vegetation, especially the closer you are to the beach, because it doesn't freeze.
08:10So you get plants like this, these birds of paradise.
08:13Bananas and all sorts of different tropicals that grow down here.
08:17You know, since we're in a beach community out here in Coronado, let's see what they got for beach attire.
08:38Just show you some of the brands they've got salty crew.
08:40Just show you some of the brands they've got salty crew.
08:43This here is called Emerald City Surf Shop out here in Coronado.
08:48You're going to definitely want to check this place out when you come into town if you're looking for surf gear.
08:53And they actually have some local brands.
08:58This is Emerald City beanie.
09:10So in my opinion, the central area of Coronado Island is right here on 10th and Orange.
09:16So in my opinion, the central area of Coronado Island is right here on 10th and Orange.
09:23If you look around here, you can see this is where the most stores and all the traffic is.
09:29It's really the heart of Coronado Island right here.
09:40All right, so here we are in the Port of San Diego.
09:42All right, so here we are in the Port of San Diego.
09:54This area here is where there's a couple of maritime museums.
09:57You have a Russian submarine and an American submarine that you can go on.
10:00It's two different submarines from the same era.
10:04And you can just walk through them and see how much different a Soviet submarine is from an American submarine.
10:10And then you also have the Star of India, which is another boat that you can check out and do a tour of.
10:20All right, so now we're headed over from the Port of San Diego over here to Little Italy.
10:27And over in Little Italy, obviously, you can get gelato, great Italian food, burgers, you name it.
10:35You'll see that's where we're going next.
10:51So this park here is actually called Waterfront Park.
10:54You can see why, but we've got a playground, fountains right here.
10:59There's the waterfront.
11:12All right, so here we are on India Street, which is effectively the main drag for Little Italy.
11:18You can go right or left here.
11:21We're going to go left and right, just kind of show you guys around. Let's do it.
11:32So one of the benefits that we've seen from COVID is the fact that they have a lot of outdoor dining now.
11:37But look at how close it is to the water for Little Italy here.
11:41So let's go this way and take a look at all these restaurants.
11:51So we're going to go inside Landini's here and get a piece of pizza. Let's see how good it is.
12:01There's my bro right there.
12:10Saucy.
12:14Cash and carry Italian foods right here. Look at that.
12:18So classic, you got to get your own cash to get the Italian food. Look at it.
12:41All right, so now we're going to go to the Gaslamp District. We're going to leave Little Italy.
12:45Let's go to the Gaslamp.
12:48Gaslamp District
12:55Yeah, so here we are on Fifth Avenue and Market Street.
12:58This is like the absolute central area of Gaslamp.
13:02If you walk Fifth Avenue up and down, this is really where you're going to get most of the action.
13:07Fourth Avenue has a little bit of action.
13:09So does some of the other side streets, but Fifth Avenue is really where it's happening at.
13:13We'll walk down here. You'll see it's got a lot of outdoor dining even right now.
13:17Gaslamp District
13:47Gaslamp District
13:50Gaslamp District
14:12All right, so here we are. We've got the Raw Oyster Bar right here.
14:17This is six different ones.
14:20You can see Blue Pool, Malapak Day, Fat Bastard.
14:24You can see these two, these two, these two.
14:27It goes clockwise here and there's a total of 12.
14:32So we're going to just dive in and tear it up.
14:34So this one here is called the Blue Pool.
14:36I'm going to take a little bit of the horseradish here.
14:41Take a little lemon.
14:43Squirrely little lemon.
14:47Thaumik for kick.
14:50There it is.
14:52Okay, got it all marinated and salivating there.
15:03Damn good, man.
15:13Melts in your mouth.
15:24All right, so we're going to continue the San Diego travel guide.
15:27We're going to go over to Cabrillo Point, Point Loma.
15:30Let's go ahead and get started.
15:32Next day, beautiful, sunny.
15:34About 65 right now. Going to be 72 today.
15:37Perfect. It's February afternoon for us to go out and enjoy San Diego.
15:43Here we go.
15:59Here's a look at some of the military aircraft carrier,
16:03submarines, DDGs, cargo ships, assault ships,
16:07and some of the aircraft right over here.
16:11Cobra.
16:13Osprey.
16:41Yeah, so here we are at the Cabrillo Monument here.
16:45You can see this is Rodriguez Cabrillo.
16:49In 1500s, they came over here from the King Charles of Spain.
16:54And this is what eventually led to the establishment of California.
16:58This was long before it was a part of America.
17:01It was part of Spain and Mexico right here.
17:04And so Cabrillo was the guy who led the mission,
17:08or the expedition that came up here to settle what was known as Alta, California.
17:23Yeah, so here we are at the Point Loma Lighthouse.
17:26This lighthouse was built in 1855 and was in operation until 1891.
17:31It's a very bright lighthouse.
17:33One of the oldest in San Diego and all of the country.
17:36On the west coast at least.
17:37But the problem is that it was so high up there that the fog and the marine layer
17:42would sometimes make it hard to see the actual light from a distance.
17:45But on a clear day, they could see it as far as 36 miles away.
17:48A captain reports seeing it that far.
17:50But then they lowered the lighthouse to a lower elevation.
17:54And they discontinued this and now it's here at the National Park.
18:06The old cistern right there.
18:09Made it to the lighthouse.
18:12This is where they used to do rain catchments.
18:15Catch the rain water right here.
18:36Yeah, so here you can get a view of the Gray Whale Superhighway right here.
18:41So right down there is the tide pools and the kelp forest.
18:45And right there is going to be lots of gray whales and all sorts of different humpback whales.
18:50Pilot whales.
18:52Who knows what you can see from up here.
18:54Take a look.
18:56Actually, out here is Fort Rose Crayons.
18:58You can see these bunkers here in Hawaii.
19:01They called them pillboxes, I guess you could call it a pillbox.
19:04But you can see they've kind of boarded them up, but the soldiers would sit in there today,
19:11And actually out here is Fort Rosecrans.
19:17You can see these bunkers here.
19:19In Hawaii they call them pillboxes, I guess you could call them a pillbox, but you can
19:23see they've kind of boarded them up, let the soldiers would sit in there with machine guns
19:27or some sort of artillery to protect the base.
19:30So this here is Fort Rosecrans.
19:34Yeah, so this is a coastal artillery station right here from 1943 to 1946, that was World
19:42War II during the Pacific Campaign.
19:45They were worried about an invasion coming from Asia, Japan, and you can see here's the
19:50entrance into the battery here, battery E.
19:56Yeah, so this was actually a military housing unit right here, and you can see right here,
20:02Japanese submarines like this were sighted along the California coast, you can see right here.
20:21Alright, so here we are at Sunset Cliffs, this is a place to watch the sunset, obviously
20:25we're here in the afternoon, but they've got surfers down here, they've got a couple beaches
20:29that you can walk along, trails, really nice place, and it actually extends pretty much
20:34all the way down into Ocean Beach, but just take a look at how beautiful it is out here,
20:40even in the morning time, with all the surfers out there.
20:59So you guys may have seen that cave in San Diego, this one here is on the Sunset Cliffs,
21:23if you look right down here, you can kind of see it.
21:30Alright, so now we are in Ocean Beach, we're going to begin the process of looking at all
21:39these beaches, first one, Ocean Beach, we'll move on to Mission and Pacific Beach, all
21:43the way up to La Jolla from there, but let's take a look here at this beautiful Ocean Beach
21:48town.
21:59Yeah, so here we are at the end of Newport Avenue, we've obviously reached the beach,
22:28right there is the pier, but it is closed right now, I don't know if it's going to open
22:32up any time soon, but we've got the pier, lots of kelp right here on the beach here.
22:50Yeah, so here we are now at Mission Beach, we're going to take a look around here, go
22:54grab a beer, go upstairs right over here, where the Wave House is, let's check it out.
23:24All right, so now we are here on Mission Beach,
23:54if you look over here at this big bay here, lots of sailboats, water sport activities,
23:59a lot safer than going out into the Pacific Ocean to explore, but this you can see right
24:05here, lots of vacation rentals, beautiful place to just come and relax, nice chill vibes
24:12right here.
24:14Now we're going to go down to Pacific Beach.
24:28All right, so now we're coming back onto the boardwalk here, but this time we're going
24:32to be arriving at Pacific Beach, you can see these kites in the sky here, another cool
24:39thing about here in the Pacific Beach is that you get a lot of lighting and biking from
24:41all these kites.
25:08All right.
25:39So this little area right here is called Burp Rock, take a look.
25:57All right, so now we're going up to La Jolla, so to La Jolla Cove, see some sea lions.
26:09All right, guys, we are down here now at La Jolla, if you zoom in really close right
26:28over there, you can see some sea lions, also some really cool seabirds all along this cliff
26:34here in La Jolla Cove.
26:39All right, so here we are at Shell Beach, you can see all these tide pools, we'll go
26:57down here and see what these tide pools really do look like down here in La Jolla.
27:09Yeah, so as you can see here, there's lots of seals hanging out on the rocks here, in
27:34this lagoon you've even got a couple swimming, but a lot of them just babies, moms, lots
27:40of seals out here on these rocks enjoying the beautiful sunny San Diego afternoon.
27:47All right, so now we're headed over to Torrey Pines State Park Reserve, you can kind of
28:05see it way off in the background here.
28:17All right, so here we are at Torrey Pines State Beach, and we're going to go up this
28:29hill here, we go down here, this is Black Beach, it's a nude beach actually, we're not
28:33going to go down there right now, but we are going to go to the Torrey Pines State Preserve
28:37and hike around a little bit.
28:47Yeah, so after about a 20 minute walk up this road here, we finally arrived at the Perry
28:55Grove Trail, let's go check out this trail up here at the top of Torrey Pines.
29:17Yeah, so as you can see Torrey Pines was called Camp Kalong, and you can see these soldiers
29:43basic training, going over here learning how to do lots of different things out in the
29:49Torrey Pines wilderness here.
29:57Yeah, so when you come to the Balboa Park, you'll notice the San Diego Zoo is here, one
30:01of the best zoos in all the country, but check it out.
30:13Yeah, and another place you can come to when you go to Balboa Park here is the Spanish
30:17Village, a really nice art area.
30:43Yeah, and another really popular place to come is out here in Balboa Park, you can see
31:08lots of museums, the visitor center, and right behind me, this museum here that looks like
31:14a church is actually called the Museum of Natural Science.
31:19Alright, so here we are in Old Town, this is actually considered the birthplace of California
31:39believe it or not, so let's go take a look at Old Town San Diego.
31:49Old Town San Diego
32:16So Old Town is a historic area, obviously, they do have a Mormon battalion museum up
32:22there at the top of the hill, you also have Fiesta de Reyes, which is a bunch of shops
32:26that are open during the daytime where you go in, and they have gem shops, antiques,
32:32artifacts, a lot of history in this little area called Fiesta de Reyes.
32:45Fiesta de Reyes
33:16Old Town San Diego
33:34Alright, so here we are at Casa de Reyes in Old Town, finishing up our San Diego trip,
33:41headed up to Ocean Beach, Oceanside I should say, so stick around for that episode, and
33:49that's going to conclude San Diego as I eat my fajitas here at Casa de Reyes.
