00:30What's going on everybody, this is Jeff with IslandHopperTV and today we are going to explore
00:38the French Quarter of Narlins, also known as NOLA.
00:43So we're going to explore Decatur, Frenchman Street, Royal.
00:49This here is Royal and St. Peter and there's a lot of things to see and do in the French
00:54Quarter as you're about to discover, more so than just Bourbon Street.
00:59I mean the French Quarter is huge, it is a big, huge walking area and when you come
01:07to New Orleans you're going to have to spend quite a bit of time, if you want, exploring
01:15all of the intricacies of the French Quarter.
01:20I also wanted to give you guys a little bit of a history on New Orleans, or Mardi Gras,
01:28which means Fat Tuesday.
01:31It's a religious festival that takes place in February or March and that's what Mardi
01:39Gras is, Fat Tuesday.
01:43Now you know when you go to Fat Tuesday restaurant what you're dealing with and you've got many
01:48different things.
01:51You've got those cool people there.
01:59Lots of street performers.
02:02We will also show you guys around Bourbon Street.
02:06Now bear in mind, it is the afternoon, so the way it looks down here in the afternoon
02:11and at night, two totally different things.
02:13And it is just a Tuesday.
02:17So, Tuesday afternoon in the French Quarter.
02:23If I go this way a little bit more, that will take me to Decatur and I'll also end up near
02:30the Mississippi River.
02:32If I go that way, that's just downtown, the business district.
02:36So let's go ahead and keep this tour going.
02:40Alright, so, this is Decatur Street.
02:49Now, one of the things I will say, New Orleans in the 1800s was the third largest city in
02:57America.
02:58But, because of flooding, it has come under siege.
03:04Many of you already know what happened in 2004 with Hurricane Katrina.
03:09But the erosion of the New Orleans coastline has been going on for a long time.
03:16It is a part of the Mississippi River Delta.
03:20And, combined with the fact that it is already swamp land, the Mississippi River Delta, and
03:29the ocean just keeps eating away at the flat marshland.
03:32That is what keeps New Orleans on its toes.
03:38So, it does flood here.
03:41Lots of water.
03:43Tidal surge is real around New Orleans.
03:50Or, as they like to call it around here, NOLA.
03:54If I keep going that way, I go to Bourbon Street.
03:59I want to keep taking you guys up and down.
04:02We are on Decatur.
