00:00To solve the problem of waste management or throwing garbage in Baguio City,
00:15some students there have come up with solutions.
00:18First, a high-tech garbage dump that has a sensor.
00:22Second, a web-based reporting system so that you can quickly find out
00:26who is throwing garbage.
00:29Let's change the game!
00:34A garbage dump with a motion sensor
00:39that automatically opens when someone throws garbage.
00:48It also has solar power that can monitor if the garbage dump is full for timely waste collection.
00:56This is the Smart Garbage Bin, BARAKI.
01:00Short for Basurahang Taraki, which means it makes the environment better.
01:06This was developed in 2022 by computer engineering students of the University of the Cordilleras.
01:13In Baguio City, garbage is an issue.
01:16Garbage is always overflowing.
01:20Aside from being weatherproof, BARAKI also has a real-time monitoring and notification system.
01:29When the garbage dump is full, it won't open even if we step on the sensor
01:33and we can hear a buzzing sound like this.
01:40It can also help garbage collectors.
01:42Whoever alerts the bin, they know where to go.
01:45Our future goal is to add a weight sensor.
01:49It took the group 6 months to build the two units of BARAKI,
01:54which cost a total of Php50,000.
01:57This is what we use to collect the data from the BARAKI units.
02:02So all the data that will be collected,
02:05the garbage dumps, how full our BARAKI units are,
02:09is sent here.
02:12After the pilot test last July 2023,
02:1510 units of BARAKI were procured by the local government of Baguio.
02:21When Smart Garbage Bins was released,
02:24the kids pitched it to the Mayor and Mancom,
02:28and they liked it.
02:31But wait, there's more!
02:34Because there will be waste disposal violations,
02:37it can be reported to the web-based reporting system called Alert Trash.
02:42Also developed by students from the University of Cordilleras last November 2023.
02:48Our main point is to have a system to report waste disposal violations
02:53and to advocate for zero waste.
02:55The centralized system is promising.
02:57It has been tested in several barangays in Baguio.
03:00The good thing is they can immediately respond
03:04if ever their barangay is tagged in the report of the resident.
03:09It's very admirable how Baguio City continues to address one of its main problems.
03:14Through the power of the youth and of course the support of the local government,
03:18it continues to come up with great innovations
03:21to address their problems in solid waste management.
03:25For GMA Integrated News, I'm Martin Avier,
03:28Changing the Game!
03:39Thanks for watching!
