00:00And then the sound, the echo, I think it's very majestic and classic.
00:07I don't think it's found in any other instrument.
00:31The Gangsapura Gamelan Group, based at JMBB Mall in Kuala Lumpur,
00:36is on a mission to make this traditional musical form exciting and accessible to new audiences.
00:42Through classes, workshops and performances,
00:46this contemporary troupe reaches out to the younger generation
00:49by making the gamelan relevant and fun.
00:53We teach traditional Malay gamelan songs.
00:57Later on, when everyone knows how to play the gamelan,
01:02we open up for experimentation, exploration, creativity, creating new songs.
01:08So we want to make the tradition relevant through time.
01:12We preserve what we have, but we need to be open to exploration
01:19so that the tradition continues.
01:22Toku Umar Ilani and his friend Nur Diyana Nadira established Gangsapura in 2016
01:29when they realised there was no space to practice the gamelan.
01:37At the university, we have a curriculum.
01:41We do have musical activities, especially gamelan.
01:47But when we leave the university, there's no space to continue what we like.
01:54So we discussed and realised this is the loophole,
01:58and that's why we found Gangsapura in 2016.
02:02Gangsapura started off without instruments or a dedicated space.
02:06To establish their presence, they collaborated with organisations
02:10such as the Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre and the Malaysian Tourism Centre,
02:15which had the instruments but lacked expertise,
02:18enabling Gangsapura to run classes and workshops.
02:24Today, they operate from their own space at GMBB
02:27with a complete gamelan set of their own,
02:30all thanks to ThinkCity's Creative KL Grants programme.
02:34And the future looks promising.
02:37Gangsapura aims to expand their offerings,
02:39incorporating more traditional instruments and classes.
02:43In the future, when students have conversations,
02:48they can discuss what instruments they use,
02:50such as violins and keyboards.
02:53In the future, the students will be able to discuss serunai and calimpung.
02:58So we have Malaysian music in the youngsters' earlier.
