00:00Stage 4 of Giro d'Italia women in 2024. We take the riders over 134 kilometers
00:11from Imola in Emilia-Romagna and from the racetrack at the Autodromo Enzo
00:18Adeno Ferrari. Initially a flat road all the way to the Marche region and the
00:22Athenines. Not one for Chiara Consani and the sprinters. A lot of Kotecki and
00:26others would look to challenge Elisa Longoborghini for that Maglia Rosa that
00:32she has controlled since the start of the race on Sunday. Riders leading away
00:36Antonio Niedermeyer in the white jersey. When the flag came in the attacks began
00:42in earnest right from the get-go with many of the local continental teams
00:49looking to get involved. The first mass pile-up of the week. Riders getting back
00:54on their wheels in various states of disrepair as the intense pace continued
01:01throughout the day. A stage that would be run off faster than the fastest
01:06anticipated schedule. Clara Emond clear of a breakaway group of five that she
01:12had infiltrated from the earlier stages. A 27 year old Quebec Coif from Canada
01:18mounting the three classified climbs of the day ahead of the lead group and
01:26forging clear with 40 kilometers remaining. Looking for what would be
01:31unlikely. That's very impressive victory for the EF Oatley Cannondale squad. A
01:38chase group assembling behind. Clear of the main peloton of favorites.
01:48Clara Emond but across the second climb of the day. More points gained by Clara
02:02Emond. A rider in her third year racing in Europe and a first year with the EF
02:09Oatley Cannondale squad. The attacks coming from behind in pursuit of the
02:15lone leader and the peloton behind including the main favorites. Elisa
02:19Longoborghini being tracked by her rivals and staying content and trying to
02:25stay as cool as possible in more than 30 degree heat through the Marquez region.
02:31Clara Emond looking for the shade as she's pursued by two riders out of the
02:37chase group. Their call to account. Elisa Shabby trying to forge clear with
02:42Erika Magnaldi. Canyon SRAM and the UAE ADQ squads trying to put their riders
02:50into contention. Down to the final five kilometers and less than a minute and a
02:54half between the lone leader and the now swelled group of chasers behind. And the
03:02main peloton almost two minutes in arrears as it became increasingly likely
03:07that Clara Emond would survive for a famous victory into Urbino. The final
03:13ramp to the finish line inside 500 meters and Clara Emond controlling
03:17almost a minute of an advantage into that final 500 meter climb and could
03:23savor the experience of her first UCI win.
03:29First Canadian win since 2016. Stage four goes to Clara Emond. Stunning success as
03:39she comes to terms with the scale of her achievement and behind Saraya Paladin
03:43leading in the group of chasers. Cecilia Uttrup-Ludwig getting some bonus
03:49seconds on the line after a great fighting performance and she'd move up
03:53overall as a result of that. Amongst the GC favorites behind Elisa Longoborghini
03:58overhauling Lotte Capecchi in the run to the line. Fight for minor positions but
04:04an important psychological blow struck by the race leader. Clara Emond it was
04:08that was celebrating the most after a glorious solo victory.
04:18Emond on the podium to collect the spoils of victory with it the lead of
04:24the Queen of the Mountains competition. Ultimately just 17 seconds in hand
04:29Elisa Longoborghini content once more. Another day in pink beckons maintaining
04:35that 13 second advantage. Capecchi still leads the points category. Chiara Consoni
04:42will look to sprint on stage five. Clara Emond the leader of the fight for the
04:48Magliazzura. Leading climber with almost twice the points of her nearest rival
04:52and Antonia Niedermeyer leader of the young rider category heading into stage
04:57five.
