00:00David Thompson's game is that if you look at his, his stats profile, he putted it incredibly
00:08well this week.
00:09The short game was also fantastic.
00:11I think there was one potential turning point on, uh, on Sunday where I think he had a three
00:18shot lead.
00:19He was at 27 under Michael Thorbjornson is at 24 under he's standing on the 14th tee
00:24of that potentially drivable par four and he blocks it out, right.
00:29And he's in the rough and he, uh, you know, it's obviously that's this course was, we
00:35saw I think 16 players, 20 under par better this week.
00:38So this course didn't have any defenses, but some of the defenses it has is that thick rough.
00:42And so Thorbjornson obviously is worried a little bit about, you know, that, that, you
00:47know, hitting it too far, not being able to spin it and it kind of rolling off the green
00:50hits it short ends up three putting there makes five drops a shot back to 23 Davis stands
00:56on that team does the same thing, hits it right now his ends up on a car path, but he
01:00takes a drop.
01:01What does he do?
01:02Knocks it to about this, you know, 12 inches knocks in the bird.
01:07So that, that I thought was phenomenal, but, but I thought that watching the coverage in
01:10the UK, the thing that stood out to me was, and I forget who the analyst was, but looking
01:14at his swing and the way he uses the ground.
01:19And it was a great contrast.
01:21I think too, we, we, we talk a lot about Scotty Shepherd's footwork and moving all over the
01:25place and sliding it.
01:26And he obviously does it in a way that works for him, but looking at some of his kind of,
01:30you know, his T accuracy, which he did a great job of this week, where when he at impact,
01:35he has both feet on the ground, not up yet, extremely solid base.
01:40And to me that helps them find the center of the face more often and keep it accurate
01:44in the middle of fairway, but he's also like six, four.
01:47So he's got power built in there as well.
01:48So this is a guy that he's got, he's got power, you know, he, his approach game was
01:53great this week as well.
01:54And when he's putting it like this and when he's shipping it like this, this is a guy
01:57that looks like he could be another one of the faces of young American golf going forward.
02:01So I'm just, I'm just pumped for us.
02:04So we're just, you know, we're just identifying young talent.
02:06We're making it happen.
02:08What were your thoughts on the way Davis played this week?
02:10Oh gosh.
02:11Yeah.
02:13Davis, huge congrats.
02:15And when you kind of talk about his golf swing first big congrats to his, uh, longtime coach,
02:21Eric Ashman lives here in Birmingham is a director of golf out at country club at Birmingham.
02:27It's who I went to as a kid growing up.
02:29So seeing Eric coach, a PGA tour winner, uh, was really fun for me to watch Davis get it.
02:35John Davis, his dad, Todd Thompson is the RSM tournament director, but he also started
02:42the Southeastern junior golf tour.
02:43Or if he didn't start it, he, he was the, uh, the head honcho for 15 plus years when
02:49I was coming up playing.
02:50So every time I played in a SJGT tournament, Todd Thompson was always there running the
02:56golf tournament.
02:57So I've known Todd forever.
02:59And then along comes Davis, you know, however many years later, I was like, this kid's going
03:03to be pretty good.
03:04And he's like, yeah, he's, he's, he's pretty dang good.
03:06And, uh, when you talk about his golf swing, interesting that you say his feet were on
03:11the ground.
03:12Well, it just rings a bell in my head.
03:14Anytime that I would go get a lesson from Eric, we always just try to work on keeping
03:18my right foot down, uh, through impact, keep me spinning out of it.
03:22So that's a fundamental that Eric teaches.
03:25Uh, he's got great, great footwork.
03:28Like you talk about a stable club face and it's the type of athlete to, uh, we have out
03:34of PJ two were posted as basketball highlights, which I thought was great.
03:39And we're, we're seeing more and more of this, which is the type of PGA tour athlete that's
03:45coming out onto the tour.
03:46You mentioned a couple of those stars coming out a moment ago with clan and dorm yours.
03:51But Davis Thompson, he reminds me a lot of the same type of, uh, athlete and body figure
03:57and golf swing that Ludwig Oberg has tall rangy athlete, uh, knows how to use the ground
04:04very well.
04:05You don't see a ton of changing in their levels, a lot of side bend, just an ability
04:09to put the bat on the ball, um, and be able to use the ground and sequence the golf club
04:14correctly.
04:15And that's what Davis has really been kind of what he's done since he's been an amateur
04:19golfer, junior golfer, uh, having success on every single level.
