00:01:00That was nice. I think I'll have another.
00:01:05Oh, you don't disapprove, do you?
00:01:09I wouldn't know how.
00:01:11Well, it's not like we can't afford it.
00:01:14Omnicom is the success story of our times.
00:01:17Or didn't your husband mention it?
00:01:19You're not that successful, Nelson.
00:01:22Don't lecture me.
00:01:24By all means, have another.
00:01:30Thank you.
00:02:00Don't forget I owe you a dinner.
00:02:06I'm counting the hours.
00:02:11Stop by my house tomorrow.
00:02:13I'll give you a news release on a corporate bond issue.
00:02:15I'm getting approved.
00:02:16Absolutely.
00:02:17And, you know, lobbyist is not a four-letter word.
00:02:20No, it's eight.
00:02:24Decent of you to show up.
00:02:26I am so sorry.
00:02:27You know, the dinner is probably an iceberg by now.
00:02:31Raymond, I'm...
00:02:32Everyone thinks you're this girl from the PR department on the make.
00:02:37They don't know that you're willing to do whatever you can to get the inside story on us
00:02:42for that rag you secretly write for.
00:02:44Yeah, that's right.
00:02:46She's an investigative reporter for financial press
00:02:50hoping to bring down the company with a smear campaign against me
00:02:54and any of you she can get her claws into.
00:02:56You are drunk.
00:02:59We've all had enough fun for tonight.
00:03:01The party's over.
00:03:03I want to see you in my office in the morning.
00:03:06Yes, sir.
00:03:16Not so fast.
00:03:18We still have lots we have to talk about.
00:03:24Unbelievable.
00:03:25I can't believe it.
00:03:26Can you take Nelson seriously?
00:03:28I wouldn't put it past her.
00:03:30I don't want to believe it.
00:03:40I don't envy her.

00:05:01You OK, miss?
00:05:02Yes, I'm fine.
00:05:03Look, we just may ask you a few more questions, so you don't intend to leap down, do you?
00:05:11No?
00:05:12Why do you ask?
00:05:13I thought this was a gas leak or something.
00:05:14Yeah, that was my first guess, too.
00:05:17And what was that?
00:05:18Well, it seems the firefighters found an incendiary device.
00:05:25So what does that mean?
00:05:26it out to be certain but it looks like this thing could have been set off with
00:05:29a remote control nothing's ever 100% but these firefighters rarely make a mistake
00:05:36on something like this miss you'd be surprised at what some people
00:05:44you know I wasn't a big fan of his
00:05:48it's a horrible way to die you'll let me know what you find out you'll be one of
00:05:54the first
00:05:57I'm safe now
00:06:13there are certain questions that criminal justice system must answer for
00:06:32instance does the suspect have a sufficient motive did he have an
00:06:36opportunity and in the absence of any kind of a legitimate confession what kind
00:06:40of evidence is there eyewitness circumstantial or forensic no this is
00:06:48the most heinous crime an individual can commit and as criminologists what we're
00:06:55interested in is why why do people kill other people
00:07:10that's my car
00:07:40you know most murders are committed for very mundane reasons passion race hatred
00:08:00revenge and the ever-popular greed
00:08:08where do serial killers fit into this
00:08:12oh they're in a league by themselves and we're gonna deal with a little later in
00:08:17the term but right now I'm interested in people more like ourselves
00:08:22you know any one of us is capable of committing a murder under the right set
00:08:26of circumstances even professors of criminology that depends on the quality
00:08:30of your term paper and we had a you know you most of us usually don't go
00:08:37around committing murders so when one of us usually law-abiding citizens does we
00:08:42have to search out why
00:09:0390 days and your credit rating is in jeopardy
00:09:08mr. Parker this is your auto leasing company there's three payments behind
00:09:13proceeding with reclamation vehicle if you have any questions please call a 1
00:09:188 mr. Parker this is Elena and Joan st. John's office miss st. John needs your
00:09:22services on a case could you please call me thank you
00:09:27hey Elena it's Mike I just got your message yes are you available for a case
00:09:37am I available when does she want me to start immediately oh well let's see yeah
00:09:43I guess I could shuffle a few things around and start Oh say this morning
00:09:47hey for Joan I will always make the time yeah give her my best thanks hey
00:09:59Charlie Charlie lighten up will ya look I've been out of the country for a few
00:10:05months working on a very important case you know how my job I don't blame you
00:10:11but I got a check for you no I'm not kidding yeah yeah just have somebody
00:10:17over here by ten to take me to the yard to get my car Charlie you are the man
00:10:28Samantha kitty kitty kitty now recounting
00:10:34Nelson Raymond chief financial officer of corporate giant Omnicom
00:10:41seen here earlier today is Cheryl Collins an investigative reporter the
00:10:46primary suspect in the bombing in other news the City Council announced yet
00:10:51again plans to bring a major football franchise to the LA area my breath
00:10:58see you tonight
00:11:28that's pretty much it well the co-workers said the two of them had a
00:11:50thing going and the eyewitness said that they had a big fight the name was
00:11:54accused of being an undercover reporter how's that work I don't know you got to
00:11:58ask her you guys found some c4 in her garage it's the same stuff the
00:12:03firefighter said caused the explosion along with some wires a couple of fuses
00:12:07you know just the usual stuff we all have in our garage could have been
00:12:11planted and right and if frogs had wings they wouldn't live in the swamps come on
00:12:17Mike you were a cop now you know we've got enough here for a righteous bust
00:12:22Omnicom is right up there with Enron must be a lot of heat to nail her well
00:12:27the investigation is not over yet never know what might pop up well you know
00:12:31that better than anybody Mike isn't that why you're out there making the big
00:12:35bucks instead of being in here with the good guys
00:12:44miss Collins I'm Mike Bryant I've been pertained it as an investigator in a
00:12:50case by mr. John I've already told her everything I know well it would help me
00:12:55if I could hear from you go ahead I don't seem to have any pressing
00:13:00engagements anything you tell me will have the same confidentiality as you'd
00:13:05have with an attorney first question
00:13:10who had a motive to kill Raymond the Omnicom for starters well the company
00:13:17is a real rat's nest all the major players were at the party Carl Larch
00:13:23president and CEO of Omnicom he's responsible for all of their real estate
00:13:29energy cable TV interests was a one-time pitch man for bodybuilding miracles
00:13:34probably only a couple of steps away from an indictment on fraud charges
00:13:38Larch's wife Betty the resident black widow reputed to be the brains behind
00:13:45Charles Burke head of marketing and I suspect procurement for the rest of the
00:13:50boys club on the Omnicom board is a former lobbyist who knows where the
00:13:54bodies are buried probably buried a few himself were you having an affair with
00:13:59Raymond next question I'll take that as a no with anyone at Omnicom good
00:14:06question the night he was murdered Raymond accused you of being an
00:14:10investigative reporter working undercover now what was that about well
00:14:13it's true I was sent in by financial press to investigate some possible book
00:14:18cooking a couple months ago I got an anonymous tip that Omnicom is the next
00:14:23end loan my publisher knows that this is big news so I'm sent in he calls in a
00:14:28favor from a PR firm doctors up a resume and since I can be charming at times
00:14:34these well-tailored goons hired me what was your connection to Raymond well he's
00:14:39the chief financial officer so he's the best source I tell him I'm developing a
00:14:44PR piece on the company I get an editor at the press to guarantee that it will
00:14:48run and I convinced Raymond that he's going to be a star so why did he turn on
00:14:53I have no idea so Cheryl Collins your real name
00:14:58well I wouldn't lie about that it's easier to keep my story straight
00:15:02clever girl
00:15:10miss Collins you're free to go he's dropping the charges she made bail but
00:15:18it was set at a million dollars her publisher managed to put up the
00:15:21necessary 10% he likes my writing since we're supposed to keep the defense
00:15:27informed my men just check this out took a remote to set off the bomb same
00:15:31frequency Prince smudged so why are you showing me this we just found that under
00:15:37a mat in the trunk of your car you really think she'd keep it with her I'm
00:15:40the one who called the police the cynic might say that that was a real clever
00:15:45move that you didn't have a chance to get rid of it I went straight home after
00:15:48I saw you if it was her she could have just dropped it on the way except I had
00:15:52her follow she never had a chance to get around to the trunk of that car before
00:15:56we brought her in unless you have anything else to say you can go so now
00:16:06what do we do I know you go home and don't take any calls unless it was Joan
00:16:11St. John for me press especially
00:16:36what's the hurry what are you doing here everybody lunch oh didn't it might
00:16:47hurt actually it is good good I didn't forget which means you want I do but I'm
00:16:53willing to pay for it I ordered your favorite shinglows for lunch
00:16:56Oh Chinese where's the twice-cooked pork here you go is a napkin you know what
00:17:03you better take two didn't bring a fort did you were you taking all of those I'm
00:17:09gonna save them for later what's more rice that's fried so you know I don't
00:17:16like fried rice you love fried rice your daughter loves fried rice I like brown
00:17:22oh I guess that means you're not my daughter glad we got that straight so
00:17:28what do you think of this young woman defendant she's smart well that helps
00:17:33you think she's an innocent yeah I do she's attracted there huh yeah and it's
00:17:41got nothing to do with I just think she's too smart to knock somebody off
00:17:46this way and if she didn't have an affair with the victim she's got no
00:17:49motive well we don't know that for sure they'll do it if she didn't have an
00:17:52affair I don't know who's on an important assignment it's just that a
00:17:57carrot there's also an investigative reporter they can learn to put us some
00:18:02pretty fancy facades meaning maybe I'm not seeing her clearly you say that how
00:18:08long we known each other John 30 years 32 you just got back from Vietnam right
00:18:13and thanks to you I straightened up and studied criminology so anyway you'll
00:18:19meet her and you judge for yourself I'm meeting her you told me you'd help me
00:18:24on this case you didn't forget that did you you're playing on my absent-mindedness
00:18:28is very low we both know I didn't promise you anything you'll help because
00:18:33you're intrigued maybe maybe you'll help or maybe you're intrigued I'm intrigued
00:18:37and maybe I'll help
00:18:49I
00:19:19you
00:19:49you
00:20:19you
00:20:21okay mostly angry no I didn't get a good look at him
00:20:50well doesn't look like a burglary any idea what they were looking for all
00:20:59right we're done look I know this doesn't mean much to you but she wanted
00:21:06to stage a stunt wouldn't you make it look like the intruder had a purpose or
00:21:10she tried to establish that somebody else had access to her house when and
00:21:13put the c4 in our garage when we find that somebody I'll ask anybody else have
00:21:29a key to the place anybody at work could have lifted it made a copy I have the
00:21:34locks changed if you need me don't hesitate to call okay just what exactly
00:21:38are you gonna be doing well we go to work who's we but you have a staff you
00:21:44might say that yeah
00:22:08sir too much I mean it burn it out 100 feet per second
00:22:26what's left
00:22:31like the blast came from down here you should have been a cop professor I think
00:22:38I'd be much good anymore can't remember what I had for lunch
00:22:43did we have lunch desserts in your pocket are there any pictures of the
00:22:49room before the blast yeah I'll get them to you I still say that you should have
00:22:52been working with us on this one but you had a winner Dietrich no we do I'd still
00:22:57like to have him on our side well if she turns out to be guilty not much I can do
00:23:01about that uh what was her car parked outside to the left 50 yards excuse me
00:23:09thanks hey Johnson
00:23:21how long you think I'm gonna have to put up with that rat probably until those
00:23:25cops that you testified against get out of the joint they were dirty and you
00:23:29know it all the same like there's just some guys who feel that you're not one
00:23:33of us since when since you turned in your badge
00:23:38I didn't get a look at them at all what would they want to take from her
00:23:46kitchen well fingerprints maybe nothing on this knob probably been wiped clean
00:23:53you know if they planted traces of that c4 in the garage it would probably just
00:23:57be a thorough what do you mean if they planted it you don't believe me oh I
00:24:01have no reason to doubt you at all but the police do you want to show us around
00:24:07sure whoever broke in here tried to access my computer files they didn't
00:24:14find my backup huh I said it I do a lot of freelance work besides the financial
00:24:20press sometimes reports for a couple of cable outlets and nonfiction book which
00:24:26at the moment is overdue at my publishers wouldn't be about Omnicom by
00:24:30any chance no more than a chance which explains why they put up such generous
00:24:34bail wasn't for love I did a little research on the two of you by the way
00:24:40why don't I feel uh flattered says you had a promising career at the police
00:24:44department until your first big investigation had the collateral damage
00:24:50of bringing down a few highly placed cops anything to do with your leaving
00:24:54the department I'll do the interviews okay and the professor I didn't find
00:24:59much just one article says you work for the police sometimes the defense
00:25:03sometimes but always in the background never in the spotlight spotlight hurts
00:25:08my eyes why don't you tell us what happened the night of the murder after
00:25:13everyone left
00:25:24who told you what difference does it make it's true isn't it yes it's true
00:25:32but I want to know who blew my cover well I never betray a confidence but if
00:25:43you're nice enough to me I just might make an exception you know I don't know
00:25:48if you're sober enough to hear this but you could really save yourself a
00:25:52headache and some possible jail time if you just tell me about your company's
00:25:56finances all right we have all night
00:26:05and I had to practically drag him into another room
00:26:10is that when you left not exactly seemed like a good time to do a little search I
00:26:16tried to help myself but I didn't find anything
00:26:23and then the phone rang it was another phone not on the main system it was a
00:26:31private line I think I was afraid it might wake him and then I heard him
00:26:35coming and figured I'd had enough for one night so I got out of there what
00:26:41would anybody have had the time to plant that bomb beer seemed to how long it
00:26:45had been there could have been a long time they knew he'd go to the phone yeah
00:26:50I wonder why he didn't that voicemail in his private line well when answer the
00:26:54phone they probably pushed the remote button you know how lucky you were to
00:26:58leave when you did so how do we proceed we look it's my case and I'm a very
00:27:06competent investigator but this is a criminal investigation I think what Mike
00:27:11is saying we don't a duplicate our efforts exactly that's why I'll be
00:27:16working right alongside him on this desk I have some bios there's some
00:27:23really good stuff in there my guess would be whoever tipped me off to
00:27:27something wrong at Omnicom they wanted me to get next to Raymond so they could
00:27:32frame me for his murder you don't have any idea no but I think that that's
00:27:36where I should start looking we should start looking if that's okay with you
00:27:41naturally that's the one place I could use your help for as long as it works
00:27:46you know if you two could figure out who this whistleblower is it would be one
00:27:51great big piece of the puzzle one way or another I should start interviewing the
00:27:57suspects you know Raymond's ex-wife was supposed to be at the party but wasn't
00:28:03be nice to know why she didn't show hmm must have had a compelling reason and he
00:28:08sent me this photo where was this taken that's the building where he made the
00:28:14first drop with the note about Omnicom and he cut all of the letters out of the
00:28:18financial press that doesn't tell you a lot just enough to get me interested so
00:28:23I'll see you tomorrow uh yeah I'll call you okay
00:28:27John oh I have to pick up some cat food
00:28:42so what do you think I don't know we really don't know what happened when she
00:28:47was alone with Raymond or whether they were really involved or not except for
00:28:51what she told us at least if she's with me I can keep an eye on her well I didn't
00:28:55say I was suspicious of her you didn't say you believed her either you know it's
00:29:00possible she's being framed unless we can find a motive we have to assume
00:29:03she's innocent well that's the theory anyway isn't it
00:29:09that car wasn't there when we got here so it's too dark I can't read the plates
00:29:15and I don't wash that thing probably just a guest of a neighbor yeah maybe
00:29:22take it easy in this thing will you fasten your seatbelt
00:29:39you're up oh thank you
00:29:52dr. Raymond I'm dr. Maxwell and I thank you for taking me on such short notice
00:29:56always happy to accommodate a fellow professional you can have a seat oh thank
00:30:00you
00:30:06so what seems to be bothering you well this isn't about me it never is no
00:30:12seriously doctor please are you embarrassed discussing things with a
00:30:17woman oh no nothing like that I'm not here as a patient perhaps you care to
00:30:21explain I am a professor of criminology and at the moment I'm working as an
00:30:25advisor on the defensive of Cheryl Collins the woman who killed Nelson well
00:30:31that hasn't been proven yet my marriage to Nelson was over some time ago but
00:30:36that doesn't mean that I don't have feelings for him oh I understand
00:30:39perfectly they called me to go down to the morgue to identify his body not
00:30:45exactly the way I'd like to remember him so I hope you don't expect me to be
00:30:49particularly cooperative I would only hope you'd be truthful that is my
00:30:54business can you think of anybody who might have had a motive to kill him
00:30:58there are a lot of people damaged by Nelson
00:31:01Omnicom is not the cozy little club they'd have you believe I guess you'd
00:31:08like to know if I have a mother now that you mentioned it yes yes I've been
00:31:13fighting with Nelson for the last few months over property settlement has to
00:31:17do with our divorce now that he's dead I get it all so I suppose you'd call
00:31:23that a motive well yet it qualifies of course the only problem with that is I
00:31:28wasn't there that evening oh where were you home alone reading a good mystery
00:31:37what's that my bill I get paid by the hour dr. Maxwell it comes to about $50
00:31:47a question
00:32:08I did some checking with the Corporation's Commission and confirmed
00:32:13that all three companies had in fact been set up by Raymond what about the
00:32:17offshore there's no evidence of that yet but when the three companies didn't make
00:32:23it into the stockholders report 60 days ago I figured it was worth going after
00:32:29what are you doing I'm trying to separate that bad ground noise from the
00:32:34boys need to take it to a lab this is a lab oh right sorry okay okay I think I
00:32:43got something it's Collins
00:32:48you'll find that still well they've distorted the voice so that means it
00:32:52most likely comes from a landline where's the call
00:33:00dr. Patterson isn't just the best ornithologist at this University he is
00:33:04one of the best in the world what do you mean one of the best certainly the one
00:33:09with the best hearing what do you make of it doctor very odd well there are not
00:33:14only a lot of birds on here but not ones you'd normally find together parrots
00:33:19lovebirds canaries those are typical but you've got what sounds like a
00:33:23Patagonian canoe or and I think I hear an African ringneck pet stores well
00:33:30possibly but there's only maybe a dozen or so that would have that very
00:33:34selection of birds what about an aviary maybe there's one in Santa Monica it's
00:33:42a star Winslow thank you very much no problem you've been a big help dr.
00:33:47Patterson's you know if you need anything else just whistle
00:34:03just in mating season
00:34:18okay
00:34:28all right just make sure you keep me in frame I only want to do one take you got
00:34:34it okay let's go Omnicom isn't just the seventh largest
00:34:38corporation in California and it's not that we make sure that our customers
00:34:42across the United States get the best possible value for our wide variety of
00:34:47products from household goods to energy to insurance to the very television
00:34:53you're watching now no Omnicom is about people I tell all my executives we don't
00:35:00own these offices we're just occupying them on behalf of our customers whether
00:35:05it's that farmer in Iowa or that plumber in New Jersey this company is here for
00:35:10them and their families that's right most of all we care about people and we
00:35:16get mail from a lot of you out there and we read every letter
00:35:24who put this here this is from the SEC cut the camera cut the camera give me
00:35:31the tape give me the tape come on hey all right just leave get out of here
00:35:38hello you and what are you doing here sir Jonathan Maxwell mr. large what's
00:35:48this about a grant or something do I have an appointment with you no no I'm
00:35:52a professor of criminology I've been retained as part of the Cheryl Collins
00:35:55defense team well I have to admit I have a hard time believing she did it I'm the
00:36:08one who hired her who knew she was a reporter for God's sake now Raymond's
00:36:12death has brought the vultures out spreading lies and rumors about this
00:36:15company well I'm glad to hear that I mean that they're they are lies you know
00:36:21I bought some shares in the company just a few is all I can afford but Omnicom
00:36:25seemed like the wave of the future well we still are and we'll write out this
00:36:30story there's absolutely no proof of any wrongdoing just just vicious
00:36:36insinuations well if your chief financial officer didn't be hard for
00:36:39anybody to find any evidence I mean if there is any probably isn't any well if
00:36:44Cheryl Collins didn't kill Raymond and I sincerely hope she didn't I wish you the
00:36:48best of luck of course if I get any thoughts I'll give you a call I
00:36:53appreciate your cooperation listen there's a rumor that mr. Raymond and
00:36:57your wife are having an affair no that's a lie who told you this I have these
00:37:04pictures taken a couple of weeks ago with mr. Raymond and your wife you have
00:37:08to admit they're a little compromising
00:37:15where did you get this well actually they were taken by accident when miss
00:37:19Collins was tipped that there was something odd going on at Omnicom she
00:37:24hired a photographer he was just following mr. Raymond there when he took
00:37:27these candid photos you know that's not bad for telephoto lens at low-light
00:37:32what do you use get out get out or I'll have
00:38:02you know this doesn't make a lot of sense why would your tipster make a call
00:38:05from here can't hear the birds
00:38:14excuse me have you ever seen any of these people him or this woman or her
00:38:25no okay yeah
00:38:36how about you recognize anyone
00:38:55you
00:39:25mr. Burke mr. Burke this is Jonathan Maxwell I'm working on the on the
00:39:39Cheryl Collins defense
00:39:44won't take much time it's better than having to answer a subpoena sure you're
00:39:50alone what you sure
00:39:58what are you people you stay out of this don't worry why do you have to make
00:40:06everything so difficult come on I'm good for it Vic I used to think that which is
00:40:11why we loaned you the hundred thousand working on a couple of things
00:40:14liquidating some assets just need a little time which is exactly what you've
00:40:19got a little time until noon tomorrow don't worry I ain't gonna worry I want
00:40:26you to worry keep your eye on your wallet
00:40:37you all right not exactly thanks for asking you know I'm sorry to come with
00:40:44such a yeah bad time but I really need to talk to you I've got nothing to say
00:40:49just that I don't believe Cheryl was up to it and I know I didn't with Raymond's
00:40:53death the company is under investigation as you can see I've got some problems
00:40:58had a much brighter future if he was alive do you have any idea who might
00:41:03have done it I really don't know if I had a clue I'd tell you you certainly
00:41:09haven't done me any favors
00:41:16well I didn't have a lot of progress of my three interviews the ex-wife and the
00:41:21CEO have personalities that could include homicidal tendencies but Burke
00:41:26not the type besides he was too terrified to do much of anything you're
00:41:35in for a treat we didn't have much luck on the pet storefront either we've
00:41:39visited every single one that sells them yep we took the tape back to
00:41:43Professor Patterson played him what we recorded he said they didn't match you
00:41:47know maybe we're in former out of the bird's-nose later why would he do that
00:41:51maybe to cover up the background or maybe to add a background where there
00:41:55wasn't any been doing a little experimenting while you were out a
00:42:01friend of mine over the Department of Building Safety emailed me some plans
00:42:06that Raymond had approved for some remodeling on his house some of it
00:42:10included enlarging the basement but here's the ground floor here now when
00:42:19the phone rang you were in the study then you heard footsteps you left the
00:42:22house and then Raymond came out of the bedroom and went to the cabinet where
00:42:27the phone was ringing and the bomb went off what's it supposed to tell us I
00:42:32timed Cheryl's walk to the car it was a good 30 seconds before she actually got
00:42:38in the car and started the engine you didn't hear the phone ringing outside
00:42:41did you know it shouldn't have taken Raymond more than five maybe ten seconds
00:42:48to get from the bedroom to the cabinet where that bomb was so what happened
00:42:54during the missing 20 to 25 seconds I don't know we'll keep working on this
00:43:01Oh here's the audio tape again now this is without the bird sounds they were
00:43:07pretty easy to take out evidently let them in later there's no ambient sound
00:43:11at all exactly but there's a slight reverberation around the voice and that
00:43:17that's not distortion either what's burning I'm not going I bet it's okay
00:43:34it's all right it's normal he's just kicking it up a notch
00:43:38Chinese Chinese I'll call
00:43:56so under the circumstances and I think in the spirit of fairness you should fine for the
00:44:05defendant thank you miss Lodge I think this is a good time to call for a noon
00:44:11recess bailiff all rise this court stands in recess for one hour it was
00:44:21pretty slick Thank You professor Maxwell you were expecting me my husband
00:44:25described you perfectly warned me that you might loom up unexpectedly well then
00:44:30you know I'm here I have a pretty good idea any more of those so-called
00:44:34incriminating photos oh well got some here and yeah I wasn't gonna show them
00:44:41to you but I didn't want to embarrass you no I don't easily embarrass good
00:44:46here they are well if you're hoping to cause troubles between my husband and I
00:44:52you're sadly mistaken Raymond was going through a difficult patch in his
00:44:57separation and I was merely consoling him oh oh I see
00:45:03Raymond and I go all the way back to college together when I explained what
00:45:06happened to my husband he understood immediately well I'm sure that's a
00:45:09relief for you I mean given Raymond's reputation with the ladies if he had
00:45:14dropped you and you thought that Cheryl was the new young thing I'm not the
00:45:21impulsive type professor oh I could see that you were like a surgeon there with
00:45:25that cross-examination I'll take that as a compliment incidentally do you have
00:45:29any idea who it was contacted Cheryl Collins into tipping her to investigate
00:45:34Omnicom I wish I did this company isn't in trouble and all it's done is to stir
00:45:39up a lot of unfavorable publicity now if you'll excuse me I have to go don't you
00:45:45have to be somewhere you are somewhere yes do you know if anybody here
00:45:50validates I think not
00:45:56I'll tell you what level your car is on
00:46:08so this is where I was standing when they took the photo of me waiting for
00:46:12the drop how long were you waiting about 15 minutes and then
00:46:20envelope with the documents no idea who sent him right no I said a guy in a
00:46:24beat-up car gave him ten bucks excuse me Brian here oh hi Diane sure yeah I'll
00:46:35just meet you there yeah I remember where your dad's
00:46:38beach club is that's the one with all the sand right ah yeah see you there
00:46:44telling me what tie to wear why do you suppose he sent a photo messing with my
00:46:51head mostly letting me know I'm being watched and making sure you come alone
00:46:56from the angle of the photo probably taken from up there I'm thinking third
00:47:01floor
00:47:15good morning and thank you all for coming to the fourth annual Omnicom
00:47:22shareholders best ball tournament before we tee off I'd like to say just a few
00:47:31words as you know the tragic events surrounding the death of our colleague
00:47:36Nelson Raymond have generated a lot of rumors innuendo and speculation max if
00:47:43that's true then why did financial press send in an undercover reporter
00:47:46well Patsy as you should know sometimes reporters will do anything fabricate
00:47:51anything go to any length just to concoct a story max after you were
00:47:55defeated in the congressional primary two years ago then you signed on as the
00:47:59main lobbyist for Omnicom isn't that true well that's no secret on the night
00:48:03of the murder did you actually hear what Nelson Raymond and Cheryl Collins were
00:48:07arguing about no I was outside with everyone else but I could see through
00:48:11the window that there was a heated argument going on by the way do I know
00:48:16you I don't ever remember seeing you at any of the stockholder meetings I
00:48:19wouldn't think so I'm a professor of criminology I'm working on the Cheryl
00:48:23Collins defense I have a five shares of this is hardly the time and place
00:48:30getting back to the business at hand I urge you all to wait for the next
00:48:35quarterly report throughout in just a few weeks to decide for yourselves the
00:48:40health of Omnicom thank you all for coming good luck and I'll look see you
00:48:46out on the lakes
00:48:48you son of a gun died
00:49:08you really a PI sure am cool okay you would do the old detective shows uh sure
00:49:27I guess yeah cuz I sure am I always thought I'd make a great private dick
00:49:32huh well you know maybe you can help me out this is about a piece of vital
00:49:36evidence a photo that would have been taken about four weeks ago from this
00:49:40office window really this office yeah could you a check and see who was here
00:49:46in the 23rd of last month yeah I sure can
00:49:51here we go 23rd was a Tuesday it looks like the same groups meet here every
00:49:56weekday evening every weekday except Wednesdays like today the office is
00:50:01closed you don't say you uh you recognize any of these people no but I
00:50:10don't usually hang around in the evenings well thanks for your time I'll
00:50:15let you know if we need you in court really that would be great what should I
00:50:20wear ah this looks good this is nice yeah what about a tie no no ties really
00:50:26because I got a great time my wife just gave me it's Paisley I I think you'd
00:50:33like it
00:50:49you're parked on the green oh sorry
00:50:57yeah I'm really sorry just a couple of things I wanted to ask could you just
00:51:03tell me did you get things patched up with Raymond before he before he died
00:51:07Nelson and I never had any problems personal or otherwise well you know
00:51:11there are several people who said they saw you having a heated argument the two
00:51:15of you in the boardroom late at night just the two of you and then a young man
00:51:19from the mailroom said he saw you take a swing at Raymond is that true well if
00:51:23you must know I was beginning to worry about his secretive way of doing
00:51:27business and whether or not it was going to affect the rest of us but it's in any
00:51:30kind of jeopardy or not words were exchanged truth be known
00:51:34Nelson I never really cared very much for each other styles he always thought
00:51:38that I was just another crooked politician I always thought he was just
00:51:41a thief in a expensive suit which one of you was right your phone
00:51:57I can't talk right now yes yes I'll be there listen do you miss being in
00:52:05Congress no no I don't but I am missing the opportunity to prepare for this golf
00:52:10tournament so if you'll just excuse me I'm sorry to bother you cleared up a
00:52:14couple of things for me thank you that's just fine that's mine
00:52:19oh sure is oh I'll get it you're right that is yours how do you like that had
00:52:29it in my hand all the time
00:52:40this is dr. Louise Raymond I can't take your call right now
00:53:10did you find out anything yeah not enough I don't think anybody took your
00:53:16photo from that office yeah but the office was closed the next day so
00:53:21someone might have snuck in and taken the front of this building they just
00:53:25wouldn't have had you in a shot you they put in later someone's going through an
00:53:30awful lot of trouble to cover their tracks where else did you go that day I
00:53:34went straight from my house to my publisher's office why well for one
00:53:38thing what you're wearing would have been the same I mean even if the photos
00:53:41were changed let's go back to your place I want to check something
00:53:47Oh
00:54:17Oh
00:54:47Oh
00:55:17Oh
00:55:47Oh
00:56:17Oh
00:56:47Oh
00:57:17Oh
00:57:47Oh
00:58:17Oh
00:58:19Oh
00:58:21Oh
00:58:45well I'm sorry to drag y'all down here but under the circumstances we have to
00:58:50keep a low profile what circumstances exactly the SEC is looking into our
00:58:55records and they're gonna see that Raymond was cooking the books with
00:58:58Nelson's unfortunate death we have the opportunity to just circle the wagons
00:59:01and protect ourselves I mean lay all the blame on poor dead Nelson I know it
00:59:06sounds cold-blooded Louise but nothing we can do can bring Nelson back and we
00:59:10all stand to profit I've spoken to a couple of sympathetic investment houses
00:59:15and they'll help us weather the storm nobody wants to see another in run which
00:59:20can't happen because Nelson's records were destroyed in the fire and there
00:59:25aren't any other copies are there Louise I happen to know there aren't I'm happy
00:59:31to hear we're all going to profit I assume that does include the Merry
00:59:36Widow absolutely could you be more specific we're
00:59:41prepared to buy your inherited shares at the market price before this tragedy
00:59:45as a show of good faith on the part of the company and as compensation for
00:59:51your suffering well that sounds very compassionate so where is mr. Charles
00:59:58Burke isn't he a member of your team he knew about this meeting I talked to him
01:00:03doesn't that seem a little bit suspicious
01:00:21well if we're all agreed I'd say this meeting could adjourn I'd like a cashier's
01:00:28check delivered to me today you'll get it oh and by the way in case you're
01:00:37wondering I'm not having a memorial service I'm sure he would have wanted
01:00:42that way
01:00:45hang around her long enough and you'll catch cold this is better work out sooner
01:00:51she gets that check the better it's our insurance policy I just don't want to be
01:00:56the next executive to end up in prison don't worry Max we're all in this
01:01:01together we're family Oh Max get some rest
01:01:08don't worry
01:01:17what if Cheryl didn't kill Nelson so what if she did then one of us did so
01:01:23what well if one of us gets caught say by your professor he or she could bring
01:01:30our whole stack of cards down maybe we should let the jury sort it all out
01:01:35personally if I had to bet I'd put my money on Louise and like the rest of us
01:01:40she's not just protecting herself after all she's coming out way ahead maybe she
01:01:46did do you care no I don't
01:01:55I'll see you later
01:02:16Oh
01:02:47how in the world did you get in here it wasn't easy
01:03:04I came up this way close the door my car and then I got a phone call so I had to
01:03:15look for my phone of course it was a wrong number so you were standing about
01:03:19here yeah the photographer had to be close you know that photo could have
01:03:28been taken from up there your reception seems to be out of lunch go somewhere
01:03:46I'm getting away for a while need a little time to myself hmm well at least
01:03:51you know you can afford any vacation you want now that's supposed to mean well I
01:03:55mean you're coming into some money we have that cashier's check already huh I
01:04:00think you'd better go you know what might interest you to know that your
01:04:04co-conspirators at Omnicom think you might be the one who killed your
01:04:08husband leave or I'll call security you know I wouldn't be leaving town just yet
01:04:15the police might want to talk to you
01:04:25yeah yeah that professor was here again he knows a lot more than he should well
01:04:33we'd better do something
01:04:56let's go what are we doing I've seen that car twice before it was cruising us
01:05:06and we were downtown
01:05:25you are good at this right you haven't lost one yet one would
01:05:55why is this Joker going into a junkyard
01:06:16the purloined letter where they had a beat-up car with all the others
01:06:25wait here
01:07:25so much for that not necessarily
01:07:55mr. Burke mr. Burke is Jonathan Maxwell mr. Burke
01:08:23hey man in black what I think we have to get into Berkshire why what's going
01:08:41on what do you say big
01:08:58Burke Burke mr. Burke the weasel ain't in here
01:09:09mr. Burke hey Burke
01:09:17Burke come on out
01:09:28okay here's Cheryl in front of her house
01:09:57now we'll lift her out of that photo and clone her over here you know whoever did
01:10:05this sophisticated technically not that sophisticated what do you mean look here
01:10:11can you zoom in on that newspaper yeah there that headline I'm missing
01:10:17something well this is Wednesday's newspaper with Tuesday's election results
01:10:22darn it Mike you good he's bound to trip up sooner or later he almost did with
01:10:30that stolen car yeah maybe we just turned the heat up enough to force his
01:10:34hand the big question is what is this mysterious whistleblower have to do with
01:10:38the Louise Raymond you know I'm gonna do a little checking around on the
01:10:42internet see what I can find out this could take me a while kid come on I'll
01:10:47take you home see you later have fun
01:10:59hey Samantha baby curiosity killed the catch you know
01:11:17Oh
01:11:47so much for changing the rocks they weren't after you didn't get your
01:12:02records the first time around and they were just protecting themselves oh they
01:12:06took my entire computer system for all the good it'll do them
01:12:14nothing else is thorough well they didn't get anything because I
01:12:18don't have anything
01:12:22this isn't going well is it believe it or not we are making progress and we are
01:12:29far from beaten thanks Mike used to being on the outside
01:12:34looking in just a lot easier
01:12:40you know I don't think you should stay here tonight any suggestions like your
01:12:44place actually that is a suggestion I mean I have a spare bedroom fold-up
01:12:53what are we looking at here thanks this is the electrical plot for the
01:13:10remodel Raymond did at his house look how many electrical outlets he's got in
01:13:14there must have used it for a workshop or something the fire department said
01:13:18the basement was empty yeah why remodel your basement and then empty it out just
01:13:24before the explosion are you suggesting that Louise Raymond knows how to make a
01:13:28bomb I'm suggesting she might have had help
01:13:32Cheryl I want you to find out everything you can about Louise Raymond when we
01:13:36need it right away look Mike check with your friend at the
01:13:39phone company Jimmy yeah find out how many calls she made to her husband when
01:13:44and how often and also check on your hunch about the donator rec to meet me
01:13:51back here as soon as you can right
01:14:03oh oh dr. Raymond going on a holiday today yes and she's asked me not to take
01:14:09any appointments until she returns hmm what cruise lines you taking she
01:14:14wouldn't take a ship her husband had a boat and he couldn't even get her to go
01:14:19out on it oh really where's the boat docked I have
01:14:23no idea
01:14:32I got a fairly complete bio on Louise Raymond she went to medical school
01:14:39specialized in psychiatry married Raymond about 12 years ago anything
01:14:43more recent at all a lot of charity work most recent is the Veterans
01:14:48Administration when she started a couple months ago that makes sense
01:14:53listen Raymond had a boat you have any idea where to dock as a matter of fact I
01:14:58do oh good I gotta get there before it's too late what's the matter have you seen
01:15:03my doggies come on I'll take you
01:15:09oh
01:15:27okay
01:15:30what I put my cell phone oh it's among the missing better call Mike and tell
01:15:36him where we are I can handle that
01:15:54he's not answering better keep trying
01:16:06Oh
01:16:16what are you doing here oh I would have been here sooner but I had to piece
01:16:20together your seasickness medicine with your husband's yacht took me a while and
01:16:27then when I found out of course that you work at a VA hospice everything just fell
01:16:32together both of you on the boat
01:16:38get on the boat I got it get your hands down okay
01:16:50you know it wasn't a bad plan you're working at the VA had access to a corpse
01:16:55somebody with no family nobody would ever inquire about him but there was a
01:17:0020-second discrepancy between the time it took you to come from the bedroom
01:17:05alone and answer the phone but that was the time it took you to to place the
01:17:10body that's a narrow window of opportunity but smart people like you
01:17:15wouldn't leave anything to chance I bet you rehearse it until you had it down
01:17:18including the phone call and the time to get outside to a safe place and set off
01:17:23the explosion
01:17:31you know what was the really nice touch when you identified the body I mean
01:17:37nobody would question whether he was dead or not especially when the grieving
