00:00Stage one of Giro d'Italia women for 2024, a 15.7 kilometer individual time trial on

00:13mainly flat roads in and around Brescia in northern Italy.

00:18For me it's extremely important and especially because I'm wearing the tricolore so I really

00:24would like to honor it, to be the best version of myself during this race and to show it

00:31on the road.

00:32Elisa Longo Borghini, very much the fan favorite as the 153 riders representing 22 teams got

00:40set to battle over eight full days of racing, beginning with the shortest stage of the week

00:47and the inclement weather conditions predicted by the weather forecasters, meaning that many

00:52of the leading riders for the general classification hunt were at the very beginning of the start

00:58order, including Juliette Lavousse and world road race champion and national time trial

01:03champion of Belgium, Lotte Capecchi.

01:07Among the early starters off the ramp and included among them Elisa Longo Borghini,

01:13former podium finisher and crashed out of last year's Giro d'Italia women and gunning

01:20for an overall title success that would be career-defining for her, Juliette Lavousse

01:25setting the early pace at the 6.6 kilometer intermediate point, Grace Brown the time trial

01:33champion of Australia and for many the pre-stage favorite, Lotte Capecchi faster than Lavousse

01:40at the 6.6 kilometer point, just one climb along the way that coming within three and

01:46a half kilometers of the finish line, Elisa Longo Borghini blitzing the best time of Capecchi

01:53and the rest to that point in the proceedings, the mainly flat roads in the early point of

01:58the time trial leading to an average speed in the early moments of more than 48 kilometers

02:05an hour, Grace Brown arriving at the intermediate point, level on time to within a hundredth

02:12of a second of Elisa Longo Borghini, a sensational duel out on the roads of Lombardia ensuing

02:20between the two riders, Juliette Lavousse setting the early benchmark at the finish

02:26line 44 and a half kilometers an hour for the team DSM rider from France, onto the Castello

02:33climb of just 800 meters, the challenging and twisty roads that would bring the riders

02:39through to the conclusion in Brescia, Capecchi eclipsing the time of Lavousse to go top of

02:45the timesheets and ultimately it would be a top five finish for her, Elisa Longo Borghini

02:51though by some considerable margin the fastest to that point and it was a time that was going

02:58to take some beating. Brodie Chapman among the later runners for the little track squad

03:22failing to get on terms, Titat Nguyen the final rider into action, Elisa Longo Borghini

03:32taking stage success and with it the Maglia Rosa, the first of the week, an emotional

03:38moment for the Italian rider, Elisa Longo Borghini winning the time trial but a scant

03:47margin of just one second, Brodie Chapman in third, Longo Borghini leading by just that

03:54one second and also leading on points ahead of stage two. I'm so joyful at the moment

04:09and I don't know maybe it will be the only day I will get to wear this jersey but I will

04:16try to honour it and yeah I will just enjoy it and race my heart out with my teammates

04:24and yeah I'm just very emotional at the moment, I'm so proud.
