More than a half of holidaymakers factor in a ‘holiday eve’ stay away before jetting off abroad.
A poll, of 2,000 adults, found seven in 10 think staying somewhere the night before leads to a smoother, less stressful start to a trip, by minimising the chance of missing their selected mode of transport.
While 38 per cent admit to sleeping better knowing they’re somewhere close to where they need to be in the morning.
And 56 per cent of all respondents thought a comfortable night’s sleep was the main selling point of a ‘holiday eve’, alongside a relaxing dinner (49 per cent) and a few drinks (32 per cent).
The research was commissioned by Premier Inn, which has launched a guide [www.premierinn.com/holiday-eve] with expert Victoria Philpott, on how to enjoy the perfect ‘holiday eve’.
Victoria said: “Annual leave is so precious and we want to make the most of it - but it can be hard to switch off.
“It’s been fun helping create a guide to help those heading away on holiday to make life that little bit easier so there’s less of the stress.
“There’s lots of tips on how to help, including getting a kid’s hangable shoe organiser and packing it full of outfits so you can simply hang it up when you get to your destination and it’s ready to go.”
It also emerged only 41 per cent of the sleep had before heading on holiday was estimated to be ‘quality’ - with seven in 10 believing it affects their mood the following day.
Despite some of the strain, 32 per cent feel excited the night before a holiday, though 16 per cent feel on edge or nervous.
A third of those polled were heading off on holiday within the next two months, yet only 21 per cent of those who’d never factored in a ‘holiday eve’ before would consider it in future, despite the obvious benefits.
It also emerged respondents struggle to get into ‘holiday mode’ until day three of a trip - due to the lingering stress of the build-up.
Travel delays, having to set off early to get to the airport and a lack of quality sleep the night before dampen enthusiasm early on.
While 67 per cent aren’t satisfied until they’re fully set up and comfortable in their new surroundings.
However, 68 per cent don’t let any last-minute packing and airport stress ruin their mood, according to the OnePoll data.
Three in 10 (29 per cent) frequently endure the lingering stress and tiredness for a few days into a holiday.
Tamara, from Premier Inn, added: “We created our guide to encourage those who haven’t tried a ‘holiday eve’ before to give it a go.
“If it’s not something that’s usually considered, it really can make all the difference to fully relaxing into holiday mode that little bit sooner.
“And it’s a great way to start your holiday early.”

00:00Annual leave is so precious. We want to make the most of it, but it can be hard to switch
00:07off. Research has shown that it can take us until day three to truly relax. I'm here
00:12with Premier Inn to share my tips and tricks to take the stress out of holidays and put
00:16the excitement back in. We want you to enjoy your trip from day one.
00:29I'm really bad at packing. Do you have any advice?
00:32Yes, lots. If you're travelling with small children, get one of the hanging foldable
00:37shoe organisers and then you can lay it on the floor, you can fold up their clothes in
00:42outfits and stuff it in each pocket. Then when you get to your destination, you just
00:45need to hang it on the door and then you've got all their outfits ready to go. Another
00:49tip for travelling with the family would be to use packing cubes, but colour code them
00:54so each member of the family has a colour each. Then you can just hand them out in your
00:57destination and you can use one suitcase for everyone.
01:01I haven't travelled much before. How would you suggest that I keep more organised?
01:05I'd recommend that as soon as you've booked your holiday, you get a list started and then
01:09you can book your airport parking, you can book your travel insurance, you can book everything
01:13you need to do with going on holiday. And then on the actual day of your trip, I'd recommend
01:18wearing a bum bag. You can just wear it across your body so you've got easy access to your
01:22phone and your passport in the airport.
01:25I'm getting really stressed before going on holiday. Do you have any tips or advice
01:30on how to get into holiday more quickly?
01:33I'd recommend booking into an airport hotel the night before. That way you're there and
01:37you're ready, you can just enjoy the bar and the restaurant and then in the morning you
01:41can get up, have a breakfast and wander over. Some airlines let you check in your luggage
01:45the night before if you have a morning flight, saving you even more hassle in the morning.
01:49Really exciting getting ready for a holiday.
01:52I'm a total stress head.
01:54One of my main tips for packing is to pack lightly and to colour coordinate your outfits.
