00:00Among other things, Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestine
00:10that affects about 200,000 people in Italy, with a peak among young people between 20 and
00:1430 years of age and a case in four with diagnosis before the age of 20.
00:18The need to follow a specific diet and to give up various foods can make it very difficult
00:23and a cumbersome gesture like sharing meals with family, friends and colleagues.
00:27Considering that in 95% of cases, to avoid acute phases of the disease, it is necessary to make
00:32further food sacrifices, it is easy to understand how this can lead to a sense of frustration
00:37and isolation, and with the spread of this autoimmune disease, which continues to increase,
00:42it is essential to shed light on the needs of those who live with this pathology.
00:48This is the aim of the awareness campaign CrohnViviamo, promoted by Nestlé Health Science,
00:54in collaboration with the Amici Onlus Association, designed to better understand the impact of
01:00Crohn's disease on various aspects of everyday life, both physically and psychologically,
01:06with a focus on the central aspect of nutrition.
01:09Unfortunately, as Mara Pellizzari, President of Amici Onlus, explains, people with Crohn's
01:15disease hardly receive correct information based on scientific research.
01:20Usually, the definition of a food plan occurs on its own, in the sense that it is
01:27done by trial and error, identifying those foods that can provide a document,
01:33or, unfortunately, it also happens that patients collect information from sources that are not
01:41based on scientific evidence.
01:44In a survey conducted by Amici on the quality of food, it was found that only 69% of patients
01:56had an adequate alphabetization.
01:59This, of course, does not help.
02:02For this reason, it is necessary to promote food literacy campaigns, so that all gastroenterology
02:09centers can have nutrition professionals, so that patients can obtain all the necessary
02:19information to build a healthy diet plan.
02:23Obviously, a conscious patient is also a competent patient and, consequently, a fulfilling one.
02:34A good and healthy diet is, in fact, an important part of therapy.
02:42And this has an even greater value in babies.
02:46This is how FAC, Crohn's disease diet, was born, which collects in a pamphlet available
02:52in digital format on the website of Nestlé Health Science, the answers to the most frequent
02:57questions.
02:58Ademecum, taken care of the dietitian-nutritionist Camilla Fiorindi of the University Hospital
03:04of Carreggio di Firenze, with the sponsorship of Amici Olus, is designed to accompany people
03:09on a path studied to improve the management of the disease through food, and it is aimed
03:15at everyone, both those who have just received the diagnosis and those who are in remission,
03:19as well as family members and carnivores.
03:21Certainly, the choice of what to eat can become a real challenge for people affected
03:28by Crohn's disease, because often mature convictions or fears about food that lead
03:36to a monotonous diet, while limiting both the quality of life and the autonomy of the
03:42person.
03:43Nutrition can also support medical treatment and be considered a parallel therapy.
03:50The exclusion diet for Crohn's disease is very important, but in practice, what should
03:56people with Crohn's disease eat a little more specifically?
04:00At the moment when the disease occurs in the active phase and therefore we have intestinal
04:07symptoms such as diarrhea, abdominal inflammation or complications such as intestinal stenosis,
04:15in particular, the supply of fiber should be limited, because it could worsen the symptoms
04:20present.
04:21There are also foods or components that should still be limited, regardless of the disease
04:27activity, because it has been shown to alter the composition of the intestinal flora and
04:34bacteria.
04:35These foods, in particular, should not be consumed in large quantities, because they
04:42are the ones with the highest content of saturated fats.
04:48In the Vatemecum, there are also 10 tips that Dr. Fiorindi gives to those with Crohn's
04:54disease, but also to their relatives and caregivers.
04:57To support post-doctors and dietitians, Nestlé Health Science has created a platform on the
05:03Crohn's disease exclusion diet, Modulife Expert, which allows the doctor to update himself
05:09constantly and make an app available to the patient.
05:12Modulife, downloadable for free from the main platforms, which simplifies the management
05:17of the diet.
05:18The campaign with Om Viviamo, in the course of 2024, promotes, in addition to the spread of
05:23Vatemecum to the care of Dr. Fiorindi, the organization of a series of meetings between
05:27doctors and patients, together with Omlus friends, with the aim of raising awareness of the
05:32importance of a commission that focuses on the needs of those who live with inflammatory
05:37and chronic intestinal diseases, primarily with Crohn's disease.
05:41Emphasizing, at the same time, the effectiveness of the diet of exclusion, dietitian therapy
05:45consolidated and proven effective, based on the exclusion of pro-inflammatory foods and
05:50the integration in the diet of a specific food for special medical purposes produced by
05:55Nestlé, to manage the disease in everyday life and induce the remission in acute phases
06:00both among children and adults.
