00:00You boys don't want to go mess around the old house.
00:03Those things are dangerous, you'll likely get hurt.
00:06Hey, hello and welcome to Watch Mojo Español.
00:09I am G, and today you will know the best horror movies that have been released independently and with very little budget.
00:18This is my home.
00:19You look a little blurry there, let me zoom out on you.
00:21Okay.
00:23Good morning.
00:24Got it.
00:25Okay, I got you.
00:26Number 20, You're Next.
00:28Thanks for the help by the way.
00:30Hey, you seem to have a handle on it.
01:00I'm sorry things got so out of control, but how were we supposed to know that you were really good at killing people?
01:30People's eyes are gonna pop out of their damn skulls when they see this.
02:00That was some stellar negotiating.
02:20You really do have a knack for business.
02:22Number 18, Wreck.
02:52Number 17, Our Girl Walks Home Alone at Night.
03:21What if there was a storm coming?
03:23A very strong storm, behind those mountains.
03:26Would it make a difference?
03:28We don't know, but we believe that more horror movies should be inspired by the Spaghetti Wasters.
03:34It's a very unique mix of genres, as exemplified by this Persian feature film.
03:39The story takes place in the quiet Iranian city of Bad City, and it's about a vampire who stalks its inhabitants.
03:46It's the definition of indie.
03:48It was made with very little money, and it was financed entirely through an Indiegogo campaign.
03:54But the budget is not synonymous with quality.
03:57The film received a universal acclamation after its Sundance premiere,
04:01and most critics praised its atmosphere, soundtrack, and interpretations.
04:06It's visually beautiful, fun to listen to, and deeply reflective.
04:11There's nothing we don't like.
04:15Number 16, Henry, Portrait of a Serial Killer.
04:25I'd like to kill somebody.
04:27Say that again.
04:29I'd like to kill somebody.
04:32That means you go for a ride, Otis.
04:34As we'll discover in this list, the most controversial horror movies are usually the ones with a low budget.
04:41Simply, a low budget has something that catches you, and this movie is an example.
04:46The name alone is enough to draw attention,
04:49and it's a free adaptation of the actions of a real killer named Henry Lee Lucas.
04:55The director, John McNaughton, hired his friends as actors, and used their cars and clothes as tools.
05:02The final product generated great controversy for its raw representation of violence.
05:07But it has also been acclaimed for its realism, and the excellent main interpretation of Michael Rooker.
05:13Did you really kill your mama?
05:16I guess I did.
05:18Number 15, Green Room.
05:20You can't keep us here, man. You gotta let us go.
05:23We're not keeping you. You're just staying.
05:25A punk band in trouble is offered a concert in a mediocre club in the middle of the forests of Oregon.
05:30However, they realize that it is full to the brim of fascists, which makes them considerably nervous.
05:38Things get even worse when they discover a corpse,
05:41and they are locked up, forced to fight to survive against the aggressive villains and their boss calculator.
05:48This thriller takes its first-rate cast for a violent ride,
05:52and infuses fear into the audience, as well as making them think what they would do in the same situation.
05:58We'll do it here. Stage it up the road.
06:02Number 14, Let the Right One In.
06:05I want to be free.
06:07I also want to be free.
06:09In 2004, the Swedish writer, Joyne Ivey de Linkist, published the book and adapted it to the big screen four years later.
06:17Dark but beautiful, it talks about a boy named Oscar who becomes friends with a mysterious girl from outside the city.
06:24This little girl, the calm and enigmatic Eli, turns out to be a vampire, and they develop a violent but undeniable bond.
06:32The film was made with a reduced budget and premiered at the Gothenburg Film Festival,
06:38where it was received with compliments from critics.
06:41Many praised it for its moving story and dark atmosphere, which mixes beauty and blood with grace.
06:48The compliments were on the rise during the festival season, and culminated with the nomination to the BAFTA for the best non-English speaking film.
06:57How old are you?
06:59Twelve.
07:01About.
07:02Number 13, Holocaust Cannibal.
07:05I've seen the rest of the material, you haven't.
07:08You haven't seen the stuff that even your editors didn't have the stomach to put together, and if you had, you wouldn't hesitate but to agree with me.
07:14There are controversial films, and then there is this feature film by Ruggero Deodato.
07:19The film was made with just $100,000, and yet it had an impeccable cultural impact.
07:26It contains two argumentative lines.
07:28One follows a group of filmmakers who meet cannibal tribes in the Amazon, and the other the anthropologist who tries to find them.
07:36When it premiered in Milan, the acclaimed director Sergio Leone told Deodato that he would have problems with everyone, and he was right.
07:45He was accused of murder, and many were convinced that graphic violence was real.
07:51It was absolved, and his film became an important cult object by the Shock Value.
07:57Innovative cinematographic techniques and social criticism.
08:05Number 12, Saw.
08:14In this disturbing horror film, two men wake up in a room with their legs chained to the wall.
08:20Only an audio tape tells them what to do.
08:22With the option to kill each other or cut their feet to escape, they quickly realize that the one who imprisoned them is Jigsaw,
08:30who captures the victims he considers guilty and forces them to solve bloody puzzles to escape.
08:36Full of blood, twists and surprises, Saw not only launched a successful franchise, but also popularized torture game movies.
08:45Game over!
08:49Number 11, Funny Games.
08:56This classic horror film by the Austrian filmmaker Michael Haneke, antagonizes and openly provokes the public.
09:02It doesn't look like anything we've seen before.
09:05The provocative film is about two young men named Peter and Paul who enter a house and torment the owners for fun.
09:13Made with a reduced budget and in a single location, it uses its history to subvert the experience of going to the movies and making the viewers accomplices of violence.
09:25When it was screened in Cannes, a third of the audience left the room, upset and disgusted by what they were seeing.
09:32By changing expectations and playing with the narrative structure, the film became a cult classic and is part of the The Criterion Collection.
09:44Number 10, The Babadook.
09:53And if the monsters you read about were real?
09:56While the widow Amelia tries to raise her little son Sam, he becomes almost uncontrollable after reading a book about the terrifying Babadook.
10:05There is even a horrible children's song that you know you will hear in the worst moments.
10:10Thanks to the mysterious powers of the book, the story comes to life and Amelia feels more and more terrified and exhausted, as she tries to control Sam and keep her house in order.
10:22With a surprisingly powerful message about grief, this indie horror hit drew fans and critics alike.
10:36Number 9, Paranormal Activity.
10:41Basically, it could be two things. It could be a ghost or it could be a demon.
10:46How to make a movie about a haunted house more scary? You have to make it look real.
10:52This innovative horror feature follows a couple who move to what they discover is a haunted house.
10:58From a few inexplicable objects that move at night, to screams and firecrackers, things don't take long to get worse for them.
11:07Possessions abound, strange sequences and chills have no end.
11:13The story allows viewers to capture everything that the characters do not see, and the feeling of helplessness made it an instant classic that no one will forget soon.
11:23That's how a franchise was born.
11:31Number 8, The Witch.
11:33What's that like to live deliciously?
12:03Human beings surround her while her family tries to purify her of evil.
12:08Novel director Robert Eggers managed to create an atmosphere of terror, describing historical events under a new light.
12:20Number 7, It Follows.
12:23Is there someone in there that made you want to leave?
12:25Like an ex-girlfriend or something?
12:27You said you saw a girl with yellow dress.
12:29Is that someone that you knew?
12:52Her teenage friends set rules and make plans to escape the terrifying being.
12:57With cinematic and musical nods to horror masters like John Carpenter, as well as some of the most chilling scenes of recent years, she became one of the fans' favorites.
13:10Is something wrong with me?
13:13Look, somebody broke the window. That really happened.
13:16But I saw a girl in the kitchen.
13:18Number 6, The Night of the Living Dead.
13:22They're coming to get you, Barbara.
13:24George A. Romero changed the panorama of horror with only $125,000 and a little liquid chocolate.
13:31It could be said that The Night of the Living Dead, one of the most influential horror movies of all time,
13:37worried viewers in 1968 and gave rise to the zombie subgenre that is still very alive today.
13:44Despite its enormously graphic violence for the time, the film has received praise for its social criticism, innovation and influence in pop culture.
13:53And to think that nobody believed in it.
13:56It was shot in an abandoned farm without running water, liquid chocolate was used for the blood and the extras had to eat donated things.
14:04But hey, the results speak for themselves.
14:07Are they slow moving, chief?
14:09Yeah, they're dead. They're all messed up.
14:12Number 5, Hereditary.
14:14My mom was old and she wasn't all together there at the end.
14:18And we were pretty much estranged before that, so it really wasn't a huge blow.
14:23Many good filmmakers start in horror, and Ari Aster is a recent example.
14:28He made several short films after graduating from the American Film Institute, but debuted in the feature film with Hereditary.
14:35And what a debut!
14:37It premiered in Sundance in January 2018 and ended up being announced as one of the best horror films of the decade.
14:44It amazed the public with its serious themes, brilliant cinematographic direction and the amazing leading interpretation of Toni Collette.
14:52A24 trusted the film, premiered it on a large scale and with a collection of 82 million dollars, it became the most successful in its history.
15:03It no longer holds that title, but the legacy is undeniable.
15:14Number 4, The Witch Project by Blur.
15:25This precursor to the horror of found films gave so much fear that even the screams of its protagonists were authentic.
15:32Film students who hunt a legendary witch in the woods are destined to get into trouble,
15:38but seeing it from their perspective was more than most viewers expected.
15:43The growing scares against the students during their journey put the public in the center and are increasingly difficult to explain,
15:51as it becomes evident that something terrible is happening.
15:56With the filming crew crawling through the woods at night to scare the stars of the film,
16:01their fear was generally authentic, since they had no idea what was happening.
16:14Number 3, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
16:18Franklin, let me see the flashlight. I'm gonna go look for him, you don't have to go.
16:21No, Sally, don't go. I don't think that's a good idea, Sally. I don't think you ought to go.
16:25The murders are definitely the most striking thing about this film.
16:29When a group of teenagers get on a truck to visit their old family home, they are not prepared for the bloody chaos that awaits them.
16:37They enter the apparently empty house of the neighbors and are eliminated one by one by Leatherface.
16:43With brutal impalements with hooks for meat, furniture made of human bones and, of course, death by chainsaw,
16:50this was one of the bloodiest deliveries of the cinema.
16:53The raw horror of the film is crazy in many ways, making sure that it comes out uncomfortable in one way or another.
17:01What do you want?
17:03Now, there's no need to do that. Nobody's gonna hurt you.
17:08Number 2, The Evil Dead.
17:11We're gonna get you, we're gonna get you, not another peep, kinda gonna see.
17:23Have you ever heard the trope of a lone teenager in the middle of the forest?
17:27After spending a few vacations in an old cabin, Ash and his friends accidentally unleash evil with a demonic book and spells.
17:35As they are attacked, transformed by the ruthless demons and surprised by the trees, it becomes apparently impossible to win or escape when even dismemberment does not work.
17:46Thanks to their low budget ingenuity and their endless amounts of blood, the film launched fame to Sam Raimi and Bruce Campbell,
17:55and their sequels did not take long to change the genre with their comic moments.
18:00Hey, we're not done yet, but we're almost there.

18:16I'm sure you'll like them.
18:18Now, let's go to the end.
18:21Number 1, Halloween.
18:23Death has come to your little town, Sheriff. You can either ignore it or you can help me to stop it.
18:29Nobody knows horror like John Carpenter.
18:32When he shot with a more limited budget, he directed this story about teenagers who are stalked and murdered by a masked lunatic the only night everyone wears masks.
18:44Laurie Stroud's friends fall like flies and she has to survive the terrifying Michael Myers.
18:50With creative murders and one of the most disturbing first-person sequences ever recorded in celluloid, it quickly became a reference for horror fans.
19:01And his love for the genre and the disturbing soundtrack of Carpenter himself did him no harm.
19:15As a matter of fact, it was.
19:18Do you think independent movies are better than conventional ones?
19:22You know, it's Halloween. I guess everyone's entitled to one good scare, huh?
