Family of Aboriginal woman shot dead by police in Geraldton speak ahead of coronial inquest

The review will investigate police constable Brent Wyndham’s shooting of the Yamatji woman and his supreme court acquittal in 2021.

00:00Almost five years ago, a gunshot rang out on this suburban street.
00:07It was late on a Tuesday afternoon, neighbours were chatting over the fence, when a woman
00:11holding a knife and a pair of scissors walked into view.
00:14A member of the public called triple zero, drawing the response of four police cars.
00:19Constable Brent Mitchell Wyndham was one of those officers, and 16 seconds after getting
00:23out of his vehicle, he fatally shot 29-year-old JC.
00:29The incident sparked protest marches in Geraldton and rallies in Perth.
00:34Constable Wyndham was charged with murder, believed to be the first on-duty police officer
00:39to face such a charge in WA in almost 100 years.
00:42He was acquitted by a Supreme Court jury of both murder and the lesser charge of manslaughter
00:47in 2021.
00:48He got a man for his wife and three children, and this kid got my mother.
00:52JC's foster mother remains unable to accept that verdict, saying,
00:56The murder trial of Brent Wyndham produced nothing but unanswered questions for her family,
01:01and her last hope for answers and accountability from the WA police force and the state government
01:06is in the hands of the state coroner.
01:08The inquest is set down for two weeks.
