00:00The rivalry between you and Jonas Vingegaard has already become legendary in the Tour.
00:11What does it mean for you personally that he has become ready to participate in this
00:16race after his terrible crash?
00:21I appreciate that rivalry because I respect him a lot and it's good to see him in the
00:28start.
00:29Jonas, you didn't pronounce the word victory in the previous answer, do you think it's
00:45possible to win the Tour de France two months after your big crash?
00:50To be honest, I don't know.
00:54It's been such a bad crash that everything from here is a bonus and of course, I have
01:01my hopes that it will happen and we will see.
01:06We are far away from being the favourites, we are competing against the big champions.
01:18Hopefully, we can be all at our best and to really show the cycling on the highest level.
01:32GC fights are three weeks, not only two days, so it's going to be a long journey but I think
01:42we are prepared for it.
01:44Jonas Vingegaard!
01:45You're here, the world's been waiting to see you back racing.
01:53What does it mean to you to be on the start of the Tour de France?
01:56Of course, very nice to be here at the start again.
01:59It's special for me, especially after everything that happened.
02:09To race, that means a lot, not only for me, but for the three of us.
02:293,600 metres of climbing, a brutal start to this Tour de France 2024.
02:39Here we go.
02:50It took around 15 kilometres for the breakaway to form as nine riders went up the road.
02:56Meanwhile, in his first race since that terrible crash in the Basque Country, Jonas Vingegaard
03:01was held up by an early mechanical, but the defending champion was soon back in the bunch
03:06as the breakaway embarked on the first climb.
03:09The standout names up front were Matej Mohoric and Jan Izaguirre, both stage winners last
03:14year.
03:15Valentin Marouas and Ryan Gibbons were also along for the ride, but the debutant Matteo
03:19Versi was soon dropped.
03:23And so too was Mark Cavendish, but from the main peloton.
03:27But this is not looking good for Mark Cavendish.
03:30The climbs and the heat taking their toll.
03:40The peloton soon decided to ease off the gas, allowing the breakaway to open up a five-minute
03:45gap.
03:46They were soon approaching the fourth of the day's seven climbs, with plenty of Italian
03:50fans out on the road.
03:52At this point, Cavendish, suffering with a stomach bug, was almost 15 minutes back, but
03:57the time cut would be somewhere around 45.
04:18Tadej Pogacar urging his team to up the tempo, and they started to do some serious damage
04:22at the front of the bunch.
04:25There were still five men going at the front, Marouas, Mohoric, Gibbons, Frank Vondenbrouck
04:30and Jonas Abrahamsen, who was closing on the polka-dot jersey.
04:44Big attack, and it is Roman Bardet who attacks.
04:50Bardet surging away and quickly joining up with his team-mate Vondenbrouck in a tactical
04:54masterstroke from DSM Femenich PostNL.
04:58They soon caught and dropped Marouas and Abrahamsen at the fronts, going clear with 40km to go.
05:04They would have to resist the chasing Ben Healy, and more importantly, the chasing peloton.
05:09After all, there was a yellow jersey on the line.
05:20Bardet chasing his dream, 35 seconds.
05:50Roman Bardet is putting everything on the line, everything to try and take yellow.
05:57Left-hand turn.
05:58They're going to get to 1km to go with 11 seconds.
06:02Red kite for the DSM pair.
06:04Can they hold on?
06:06Vondenbrouck now needs to sprint, sprint flat out, take his team leader, give him a yellow
06:11jersey, and what a ride by this youngster.
06:16Five hours, six minutes.
06:17They look around one more time.
06:20They're giving everything.
06:21Look at the pain on their faces.
06:22Everything is in there.
06:23A whole dream is about to be created, but look at the speed of the peloton.
06:27It's a little bit disorganized as Rucosa takes the front.
06:30They're nearly at the finish line.
06:31Are they going to make it?
06:34Can the breakaway go all the way to the finish and win stage one of the Tour de France?
06:41Vondenbrouck is the rider of the day, but is his team leader going to be the maillot
06:45jaune?
06:47We look around now, 250 metres to go.
06:50Romain Bardet looks at his team mate.
06:53Now they just need to sprint.
06:55The peloton are a matter of a few metres behind, but it's a Bardet blockbuster.
07:02Stage one, first ever yellow jersey for the Frenchman.
07:06The breakaway makes it.
07:17A fourth Tour de France stage win for Bardet, and one that will live long in the memory.
07:46For the first time in his long and illustrious career, he shrugs on the iconic yellow jersey.
07:58It was an MVP performance from VDB, who announced himself to the world today.
08:03He takes the green jersey, while Abrahamsen is our first king of the mountains, ahead
08:10of Madouas.
08:15Vondenbrouck is also the race's best young rider, while the third oldest man at the Tour,
08:19Cavendish, lives to fight another day.
