Analysis of new Mavs guard Quentin Grimes
The Mavs acquired guard Quentin Grimes from the Pistons in exchange for Tim Hardaway Jr. and three second-round picks. Mike's friend is a Knick podcaster who watched his entire career before he was traded to Detroit, so he gave Mike his analysis on what kind of player the Mavs are getting.

00:22We've had him on the show before, but I asked him about Grimes, Quentin Grimes, because
00:28he got to watch most of his career until he got traded to Detroit.
00:30And I said, can you give me a scouting report on Quentin Grimes?
00:34So I'm going to read a New York Knicks kind of, I don't even know if reporter is the right
00:39word, but a big time podcast.
00:41Yeah.
00:42Okay.
00:43As for Grimes, there were moments over the years where I thought we were looking at a
00:48slightly poor man's Klay Thompson.
00:52He is pretty close to elite when it comes to on ball defense against guards, but his
00:59height is an issue.
01:01When you slot him onto bigger wings, his shot started to elude him towards the end of his
01:08time in New York, but he's really, really good from distance can shoot off movement
01:14high and quick release elite from the corner.
01:19His biggest issue is that his ability to attack closeouts stagnated.
01:25He doesn't drive to score, seeks out pass too regularly and defenses know it's coming.
01:32There's just been a general malaise to his offensive game since the end of 2022, 23.
01:39As that all that said, if he gets his head right, I think the last year going sideways
01:47has really impacted him.
01:49He can be a big piece for you guys moving forward.

01:54So that's a scouting report from somebody that's seen, I mean, literally every game
01:59of his New York Knicks career.
02:01So I think that's, that's something to be optimistic about the upside of what he's done
02:07in his small career so far.

02:19So I think the Mavericks in a way we're looking at, you know, Hey, we got rid of Hardaway's
02:23contract, but I do think the Mavs might've got a player who can really help them next

02:30I'm assuming coming off the bench, I'm assuming, I don't know who's going to start Washington
02:35or Gafford.
02:36I'm sorry.
02:37Not what a Gafford or lively, and I don't really care.

02:41Maybe the players care, but I don't care as much just because you got to see how they
02:44use them, but I don't understand why the player, and then I'm assuming Washington will start.
02:48That leaves one spot open for starting, which I think right now, if you get Derrick Jones
02:52Jr back, they will, but I don't know, I mean, maybe you start Grimes and bring Jones off
02:57the bench.
02:58I don't know how that is going to be.
