In a new interview with MY LADY JANE's cast Anna Chancellor and Emily Bader, TNM entertainment reporter Jennimai Nguyen digs into what it means to rewrite history with a show like theirs. Plus, Anna reveals what she wished she learned in school!

Inspired by the best-selling book, My Lady Jane is a radical retelling of English royal history, in which King Henry VIII’s son Edward does not die of tuberculosis, Lady Jane Grey is not beheaded, and neither is her scoundrel of a husband Guildford. At the center of this swashbuckling new series is the brilliant and headstrong Jane, who is shocked to be crowned queen and finds herself the target of nefarious villains coming for the crown (and her head)... My Lady Jane is an epic tale of true love and high adventure. It premieres June 27 on Prime Video.

00:00oh my god middle school let's just let's just scrap it and you know maybe we just don't even
00:05redo it we just we just may i present lady jane gray history remembers jane as the ultimate
00:16damsel in distress known for her death rather than her life fuck that congratulations on the
00:24show it's been like such a joy to watch i love watching it's been so fun um something that's
00:29really refreshing to me about the show is that there's always so much chatter about historical
00:34accuracy in these like period pieces and your show basically just takes historical fact and
00:41then throws it out the window i'd love to hear from you emily what it was like to kind of play
00:46in that space of based in history but also disregarding the actual events of history
00:51we had so much freedom which was so nice because you you know anna said it earlier today it's like
00:56we're sort of setting lady jane gray free a little bit giving her the chance to have this
01:01full wonderful amazing life um and yeah i i think you know they made it very clear in the beginning
01:08that this is a fantasy in more than one way there's really some strong fantastical elements
01:15that sort of gave us the opportunity just to tell history but with this this really fun freedom and
01:24you know the way that we wanted to tell it we took the bits that we wanted and the bits we
01:27didn't that didn't work we said no it's important to keep the the some bits of history it's important
01:32to keep so that the stakes are still very high so in a tudor court what's essential is the structure
01:38the status the hierarchy and how you work your way like a chessboard how you stay alive that
01:44has to be like very prevalent and very real else there's no drama and also the reality of what it
01:50means to be a young woman in that time which is at the heart of this you know why we're telling
01:53this story because back then you know options were none and life was not valued as a woman
02:01so that needed to be you know explained explained unbelievable and then we just kind of gave it a
02:08modern sensibility and a twist of that made it you know i think a lot of people will be able to see
02:13bits of themselves now in this sort of fantastical time period yeah absolutely that fantasy element
02:20though really just like brings it to life in such a fun way the first time someone turned
02:24into an animal i was like oh my god well that's yeah because then you know that anything can happen
02:29exactly yes so then you think you know the story you think you know what world you're in and then
02:33you're like why where are they going to go with this and it's funny because it's not really they're
02:38keeping it quite it's not really in a trailer and know that any of that bit so unless people are
02:43fans of the book i think they'll actually be like shocked which i think is going to be very fun yeah
02:49yeah totally so fun um and something that's so fun about watching you two on screen is your
02:53dynamic i mean you two being at such different points of your career anna being really established
02:59emily being a little bit newer what was it like to be on set together did you guys really find it
03:04um a new experience were you able to learn anything from each other being at such different
03:08points in your career while on the same show oh yeah i mean this is very new for me you know i'm
03:15i'm still at the beginning of learning about all this and being you know the lead in a show like
03:21this it could it could possibly be so overwhelming that you're not able to you know bring your full
03:26self but getting to work with anna who is someone who i have always looked up to loved i'm so
03:33inspired by and see her just bring a game every single day it makes you like show up and you know
03:41she was so wonderful enough to teach me every day you know if i was if i had thoughts on something i
03:47couldn't work it out i would ask you and you would help me sort of figure it out well what do you
03:50think about this and i really like well we can you can do that or you can try that or so i have i
03:56have experience obviously especially costume drama and theater and but but then emily emily bought
04:03this of this wonderful freshness and is willing to learn and just so much fun i think it's so
04:10fun to have people at different stages of their lives and that we could meet in the middle and
04:14teach each other it wasn't like one person knew more than the other necessary we could just help
04:19each other we we loved each other when we met i know yeah we really did and then i had to leave
04:24and it was horrible i had to come back and be like bye everybody have fun it was like you were ripped
04:29out of our family when you went yeah a little bit because everyone still lives there and i'm
04:34across the universe totally and one last question if you were able to rewrite one aspect of your
04:40own history what would that be oh my god middle school let's just let's just scrap it um and you
04:47know maybe we just don't even redo it we just we just get some white out on that yeah i would like
04:54i wish they taught us about astronomy at school i'd love to learn about the moon i looked it up
04:59the other day i realized i know nothing about the moon and the stars and you know you're so right
05:05i think literally they taught us in a week and i'm so i'm going to go back and try and educate
05:09myself to an astronomy degree yeah degree maybe not maybe a little looking up for astronomy for
05:15dummies i might do that oh i'm sure there's a lot of it the moon will help you feel more
05:19in touch with yourself i think
