00:23:10a century and a half old.

00:23:12It was discovered by an Austrian math and physics professor, Mach.

00:23:16He noticed you can easily distinguish between similar colors of slightly contrasting shades

00:23:22when they're close to each other.

00:23:24When you set them apart, the difference is barely noticeable.

00:23:28The professor thought it had something to do with the construction of the eyeball and

00:23:32the tissue the retina is made of.

00:23:34The band's effect was later named Mach bands in his honor.

00:23:39Years later, when they had better technology, scientists found the professor was basically

00:23:44right.

00:23:45The retina is similar to a cinema screen.

00:23:48It captures light that's projected through the pupil.

00:23:51Receptors are all over that screen.

00:23:54Some of them are more active under bright light and send a whole lot of signals to the

00:23:58brain.

00:23:59When two cells send similar signals, you might think it's the same shade.

00:24:20The transition between colors can look like a separate color.

00:24:24Some people can't see the difference between contrasting colors in the picture because

00:24:28of how their brains are built.

00:24:30The color rendering abilities, brightness, and contrast of your laptop or smartphone

00:24:35screen is another reason.

00:25:42That shadow was reflecting off the dress itself, complicating things even more.

00:25:50When your brain doesn't have enough information, it fills in the gaps by making its own assumptions.

00:25:55It mostly makes them based on what it's previously seen or known.

00:25:59That's why your brain could make one guess about lighting conditions and someone else's

00:26:06People who thought it was in a shadow believed the dress was white and gold.

00:26:11Same with those who thought it was in natural light.

00:26:14Shadows and blue sky overrepresent blue light and make things seem yellowish.

00:26:19Oh, and the retailer of the dress officially confirmed it was black and blue, and that

00:26:24it was sold out in the first 30 minutes of business the day after it had gone viral.

00:26:30A new debate over the color of retro sneakers happened a few years later for the same reason.

00:26:35Are they teal and gray?

00:26:37Or maybe pink and white?

00:26:39You can't be sure with weird camera quality, flash, and funky lighting.

00:26:44When you zoom in on the picture, you can notice the hand is unnaturally bluish.

00:26:49So depending on how sensitive your eyes are to light and how your brain fills the visual

00:26:54information gaps, the sneakers can look different to you.

00:26:58In reality, they turned out to be pink and white.

00:27:08The picture has been drained of any red.

00:27:10Your brain still makes you see it because of something known as color constancy.

00:27:15Your brain can sometimes ignore information from the color of the light.

00:27:20It knows what strawberries are, and it also knows they're supposed to be red, so it

00:27:25helps you see them as such.

00:27:27When an astronaut posted a picture of some sand dunes, the Internet thought they were

00:27:32pits, not hills.

00:27:34Only when they flipped the pic over, people could see dunes in the indefinite pattern.

00:27:39Turns out your brain thought the sun was in the 1 o'clock position.

00:27:43It means it's supposed to be casting shadows from the upper right.

00:27:47In reality, it was casting shadows from the upper left.

00:27:51So turning it upside down makes things more usual to your brain.

00:28:39a trapezoid.

00:28:41The walls and ceilings are tilted, and this makes your eyes see one person tower over

00:28:46another even when they move around.

00:28:49If you have a toy train track at home, you can see how the next illusion works in reality.

00:28:54You take two segments of the same size and put them next to each other.

00:28:59One of them looks obviously larger than the other one.

00:29:02That's because your brain compares the two sides of the pieces that are next to each

00:29:06other.

00:29:07It basically compares the right side of the track that's on the left to the left side

00:29:11of the track that's on the right.

00:29:13When you compare squares A and B in the checker shadow illusion, you can tell square A is

00:29:19much darker than square B. Your brain expects the cylinder to throw a shadow on the board.

00:29:25It compensates for the alternating colors it expected to find.

00:29:29If you still don't believe the squares are of the same color, you can compare them with

00:29:34a color selector in any photo editing program.

00:29:38In the Ebbinghaus illusion, the two circles in the middle of their circle sets are of

00:29:42the same size.

00:29:44Turns out the way you perceive the size of things is all about context.

00:29:49The circle surrounded by larger ones seems smaller, and the one in the company of smaller

00:29:54circles seems to be a giant.
