00:00Welcome to Mojo Plays, and today we are showcasing the best boss fight from every Zelda game.
00:15These bosses were picked based on pure fun factors, as well as providing a balanced challenge.
00:27Before we begin, we publish new content all week long, so be sure to subscribe and ring
00:31the bell to get notified about our latest videos.
00:35Gleok – The Legend of Zelda
00:37Naturally, given the technical limitations of the NES, most bosses in the original game
00:47are somewhat basic in design and gameplay.
00:50That makes Gleok a clear choice for the most fun and unique fight.
00:54Link first fights the two-headed dragon at the end of level 4, though a three-headed
00:57version appears as a mini-boss in level 6, and a four-headed version acts as the boss
01:02of level 8.
01:03In every fight, Link must chop off the heads in order to kill the beast.
01:07However, each severed head will then fly around, bombarding Link with fireballs.
01:12Gleok has enough moving parts to keep you on your toes, making each encounter a fun
01:16challenge.
01:18Dark Link – Zelda II – The Adventure of Link
01:26We know this fight can be easily cheesed by crouching in the corner and going for Dark
01:31Link's legs, but let's forget about that unintended winning strat for a moment.
01:36When fought the traditional way, this doppelganger provides the most interesting boss fight in
01:40the game by far.
01:42It takes the sword-fighting focus of other enemies, like Darknuts, and dials the challenge
01:46level up to 11.
01:48Dark Link is fast and ferocious, able to block even the most well-timed strikes with ease.
01:53Yes, it was a major challenge, but it's also now an iconic moment, surprising everyone
01:59when Dark Link leapt into the light.
02:05Helmessar King – The Legend of Zelda – A Link to the Past
02:14Link has fought his fair share of giant reptiles over the years, but the Helmessar King from
02:19A Link to the Past remains a fan favorite.
02:21You find him at the end of the Palace of Darkness, the first dungeon in the Dark World.
02:26It's a near-perfect mid-game battle, being just challenging enough to keep you cautious
02:32but not too stressful as to take away from the fun.
02:35Link must first get rid of its mask by using bombs or the magic hammer, then follow up
02:39by damaging the gem in its head with the sword or arrows.
02:42All the while, the Helmessar King stomps about, swinging its tail and shooting fireballs
02:47to keep you on the move.
02:52Death Eye – The Legend of Zelda – Link's Awakening
03:02Here we have another final boss, and one that leads to one of the best endings in the franchise.
03:07After Link makes it inside the Wind Fish's egg, he'll be greeted by the leader of the
03:11Deity's Nightmares.
03:12What makes Death Eye fun is its many forms.
03:15Some phases resemble recurring enemies, like the blob-like Zul and the annoying boss, Moldorm.
03:21However, it also copies Agahnim and Ganon from A Link to the Past.
03:25This naturally means that the method for defeating each form is different.
03:29Not only does the variety make it fun, but it's also an interesting way to scale up
03:33to the final form.
03:37Ganon – The Legend of Zelda – Ocarina of Time
03:48Ocarina of Time is full of fantastic bosses.
03:52A special shout out goes to Twinrova, whose use of the mirror shield makes for an exciting
03:57elemental confrontation.
03:58However, it's tough to measure up to the iconicism that is Ganon.
04:03After beating his Gerudo form, the Big Bad's final trick sees him transform into a demonic,
04:08boar-like behemoth.
04:10Nintendo absolutely nailed the atmosphere, with Link trapped by a flaming ring as a storm
04:15rages in the distance.
04:17It has just the right level of peril, too.
04:20As Ganon swings his gigantic blades, Link must try to get around to his tail, the weak
04:25spot.
04:26From both a mechanical and artistic standpoint, Ganon closes out Ocarina of Time incredibly
04:32strongly.
04:40Got – The Legend of Zelda – Majora's Mask
04:49From a pure fun position, Got, or Goat, or whatever, from Majora's Mask brings joy
04:54in spades.
04:55Fought at the end of the game's second dungeon, Snowhead Temple, the boss makes terrific use
05:01of Link's Goron form.
05:03After thawing him out, he'll begin stampeding around his circular arena, prompting you to
05:08roll on after him.
05:09What was already a ridiculously enjoyable form of traversal is elevated here.
05:15Going over jumps sends Goron Link upward like a spinning wheel of death, while dodging Got's
05:20progressively more destructive attacks lends the fight a nice layer of suspense.
05:25Barreling through this fight is fun every time, so it's a good thing you have to do
05:29it a few times to unlock everything.
05:36Onyx – The Legend of Zelda – Oracle of Seasons
05:45The final boss in Oracle of Seasons, unless you're playing a linked game of course,
05:50General Onyx certainly doesn't go easy on you.
05:52And that's okay.
05:53First, his armored form will be tricky to get through, requiring spin attacks to deal
05:58damage.
05:59He'll also use the Oracle Den as a shield, which electrocutes Link if he uses anything
06:04other than the Rod of Seasons to move her out of the way.
06:07After that, Onyx turns into a dragon, whose paws Link must jump on top of to strike at
06:12the gem in his head.
06:13But with him swiping at Link with sharp claws and spewing fireballs everywhere, that's
06:18a little easier said than done.
06:23Ramrock – The Legend of Zelda – Oracle of Ages
06:30Nintendo has recycled the big head with detached hands boss design across several franchises.
06:36However, Ramrock from Oracle of Ages stands out thanks to the unique method of fighting
06:41him.
06:42During the first phase, Link must deflect Ramrock's hands back at him to deal damage.
06:46But after this, the hands change.
06:48The second phase gives him crusher-like mitts, and Link must trick him into grabbing a bomb.
06:53The third phase sees him fire projectiles while defending with shields, and Link must
06:57ricochet a seed into his back.
06:59Finally, Link must dodge ball and chain attacks for the fourth phase, pulling them back with
07:04the power glove to send them flying back at the boss's face.
07:08The level of variety is surprising, and also a ton of fun.
07:12Vaati – The Legend of Zelda – Four Swords
07:17There aren't many noteworthy bosses in Four Swords, since it's a smaller, multiplayer-centric
07:22add-on for A Link to the Past on Game Boy Advance.
07:25As to be expected, Vaati, the final boss, is the most interesting of the bunch.
07:30The first phase is quite easy.
07:32Players must throw bombs in the cyclone Vaati flies with to damage him, lest they be sucked
07:37up and thrown off the stage.
07:39The second phase is much more memorable, though, since Vaati uses attacks based on previous
07:44bosses in the game.
07:45With the arena holding different items, it's fun swapping out weapons and adapting to what
07:50the villain throws at you.
07:55Ganondorf – The Legend of Zelda – The Wind Waker
08:01A boss doesn't always need a clever gimmick or item to stand out from the rest.
08:06In the case of Wind Waker, the level of enjoyment comes from Ganondorf providing one hell of
08:11a sword duel.
08:12Players must deal with Ganondorf's onslaught as he dives, dashes, and delivers deadly blows,
08:18all while Zelda attempts to shoot him in the back with a light arrow.
08:21But Ganondorf's a smart one.
08:23He'll adapt by first knocking Zelda out, forcing you to rely on all your dueling knowledge,
08:28and eventually dodge your parries as well as her later arrows.
08:32It's a fantastic fight for a climax, also enhanced by the arena's atmosphere as Hyrule
08:37continues to flood around you.
08:42Ganon – The Legend of Zelda – Four Swords Adventures
08:50From one Ganon fight to another, this multiplayer adventure closes out on a fight with a version
08:54of the big bad that dwarfs even four lengths in size.
08:58He'll spend the first section of the fight leaping around the arena to crush you, and
09:02his lightning can send you into the dark world, forcing you to fight Stalfos minions.
09:07Halfway through, he'll start hurling his trident, which leaves a trail of fire behind
09:11and can hurt quite a bit.
09:14You'll also then need to defend Zelda as she charges up a spell to finally put an end
09:19to him.
09:20This design for the villain's beast form is a personal favorite, and the fight itself
09:24is fittingly climactic.
09:31Vaati – The Legend of Zelda – The Minish Cap
09:39The Minish Cap did a lot to establish Vaati as a stronger villain than his previous appearances,
09:45and we mean that in more ways than one.
09:47Not only did he get some much needed personality and backstory, but facing him during the climax
09:52was an exceptional high point.
09:54The first phase had Link dodging projectiles and weakening Vaati's defenses before he
09:58could deal any damage.
10:00Phase two saw the villain turn monstrous, with even stronger defenses and a lot of arena
10:05hazards.
10:06And phase three used Link's Minish form almost like a puzzle within the fight.
10:10Beating Vaati requires much of Link's weapons and abilities, bringing a lot of variety.
10:24Stallord – The Legend of Zelda – Twilight Princess
10:33Surprise, surprise, it's the undisputed king of Twilight Princess boss fights.
10:38Stallord of the Arbiter's Grounds became a fan favorite almost instantly, and he's
10:42still considered by many fans to be one of the franchise's greatest.
10:46The giant skeletal dragon is a fine design, but it's how the battle makes use of the
10:51dungeon's item, the spinner, that really sets it apart.
10:55Players must first ride along the edge of Stallord's arena, bouncing off to crush
10:59part of the boss's spine while his minions defend.
11:02The second phase is even more fun as Link bounces between the wall and pillar, avoiding
11:07fireballs and spike traps in order to crash into Stallord's head.
11:11Riding the spinner never gets old, and the only downside is that this fight doesn't
11:16last longer.
11:24Eox – The Legend of Zelda – Phantom Hourglass Muto's Temple is, without a doubt, the best
11:36dungeon in Phantom Hourglass, and it thankfully ends on the highest of notes.
11:41Eox is a towering stone golem whose body extends to both screens of the DS.
11:47It's another fight that uses the dungeon item, here the hammer, wonderfully.
11:51Link uses it to spring himself into the air, then hit one of several weak spots on the
11:56boss's body.
11:57After the stone layer is gone, destroying the wooden frame underneath leads into the
12:01second phase.
12:02Link must spring himself onto the boss's remaining head in order to damage his weak
12:06spot.
12:07Eox lets you tap into your destructive side, with every hammer blow providing a satisfying
12:13wallop.
12:19Kragma – The Legend of Zelda – Spirit Tracks The fight against Kragma is a bit similar
12:30to Eox, with just enough changes to differentiate it.
12:34Fought at the end of the Fire Temple, also one of the best in its game, you'll use
12:38the bow instead of a hammer to shoot weak spots on Kragma's body, and instead of catapulting
12:43yourself into the air, you ride a railcar upwards, with the main weak spot on his head
12:48revealing itself after you've done enough damage to the others.
12:51All the while, Kragma tries to throw Link back towards the ground and rain fiery debris
12:56on him.
12:57The railcar system makes sniping those weak spots thrilling, and the bow's simple but
13:01intuitive controls make it less of a gimmicky pain than trying to use weapons in certain
13:05other fights.
13:12Kalak Tos – The Legend of Zelda – Skyward Sword Another appearance that should come
13:23as no surprise, Kalak Tos from Skyward Sword has long been accepted as the game's best
13:28boss.
13:29And who are we to argue?
13:30Fought at the end of the Ancient Cistern, the Golden Automaton begins with only its
13:34first half visible.
13:36Link must dodge its attacks, using the dungeon's whip to remove arms and strike at the weak
13:41spot in its chest.
13:42It's pretty fun, but the second phase blows it out of the water.
13:46Kalak Tos gets fed up being stuck, and emerges from the ground to hunt Link down.
13:52By dodging its truly gigantic blades, Link can remove its appendages, but this time use
13:57its own weapon against it.
13:59Everything from the boss's design, to the satisfying crunch of sword meeting metal,
14:04makes this encounter memorable.
14:13Stalblind – The Legend of Zelda – A Link Between Worlds The boss of the Thieves hideout
14:25comes in three phases, and they are all distinctly fun.
14:29As Stalblind plays defensively, Link must use his wall merge mechanic to hide on the
14:34boss's shield.
14:35This leads to a humorous interaction, and lets Link pop out to strike Stalblind unawares.
14:40However, he then learns from his mistake, and ditches the shield.
14:44The second phase requires Link to strike at the right moments, avoiding Stalblind's
14:48massive sword.
14:49During the third, the boss's head will fly around the room shooting while his body continues
14:53pressing the attack.
14:55Each phase keeps things fresh, and is a perfect Link.
15:03Style Champion – The Legend of Zelda – Triforce Heroes The final giant skeleton we'll talk
15:13about today, Style Champion is fought at the end of the Desert Temple, and is surprisingly
15:18more agile than others like him.
15:20He can throw one of his ribs like a boomerang, has a mace for a hand, and can produce shock
15:25waves that grow larger the more damage he takes.
15:28The trio of Links must first stun him by hitting him in the back, then break apart the skeleton
15:33before using the magic hammer on his heart.
15:35After destroying his body, Style Champion's head will still fly around, keeping up the
15:40attack.
15:41Communicating with other players made Style Champion a hectic but enjoyable battle.
15:45While the game is less fun with the multiplayer no longer available, he's still the best
15:50fight in Triforce Heroes.
16:02Monk Maz Koshia – The Legend of Zelda – Breath of the Wild While Monk Maz Koshia is a DLC
16:15boss rather than one found in the base game, he's so much better than the others that
16:20we have to include him.
16:21He comes in four impressive phases, with each one bringing variety, challenge, and a whole
16:27heaping of fun.
16:28He can teleport, uses different elemental arrows, makes copies of himself, grows to
16:33the size of a building, and a whole lot more.
16:35It's one of the most dynamic fights across the whole series, and depending on how upgraded
16:40you are from the base game, can actually be a bit tough.
16:43That's not to mention his awesome music and the total surprise we felt when this wrinkly
16:48bag of bones challenged us.
16:58Ganondorf – The Legend of Zelda – Tears of the Kingdom
17:11Our genuine condolences to Kul'gera, who is legitimately too fun not to mention.
17:17But there's simply no topping this.
17:19Ganondorf's fight in Tears of the Kingdom just may be the best his Gerudo form has ever
17:24given us.
17:25He'll swap between the Phantom Ganon weapons for the first phase, all of which deal bloom
17:30damage, and can even perfect dodge your attacks.
17:33Phase two has an incredible intro, with Ganondorf transforming and extending his health bar
17:39to an almost comedic length.
17:40It's also climactic in that the sages join to fight against Ganondorf's phantoms, and
17:45that his attacks can deal major damage.
17:48Finally, his dragon form is the easiest, but still provides a tremendous sense of awe and
17:54accomplishment as Zelda's light dragon form joins the fray.
17:58Everything about this fight is just the type of final confrontation that Tears of the Kingdom
18:03needed.
18:10Did we leave off your favorite boss?
