A serious heat wave is continuing for millions of Americans, alongside a threat for severe storms.
Transcript
00:00Our top story is the heat and the severe thunderstorm threat kind of coupled together from the Ohio Valley, especially the Great Lakes into the northeast.
00:07Here we have Plattsburgh, New York. This is on the west side of Lake Champlain, kind of maybe a sibling to the city of Burlington, Vermont, but on the New York side.
00:17Yeah, look at those thunderstorms. What they did very quickly, short amount of time here, can create sometimes those difficult travels on local roads.
00:25So that's one of the impacts that we've had out there with these thunderstorms rounding the bend of the heat.
00:30The good news is it knocked the numbers down, right, in Plattsburgh, Burlington, so many spots.
00:34And we will still have some potential for more wet weather into the upcoming days.
00:39Absolutely. These storms are still prowling through parts of the plains.
00:43We're concerned about a confirmed tornado up here in the northern parts of Nebraska still.
00:48This is a cell that we've been watching for quite a bit.
00:50And as we switch over to the high-res radar data out of North Platte, we were talking about how this is kind of morphing a little bit.
00:56But the latest reports here indicate that we still have a tornado that is being produced by this about seven or eight miles south of Long Pine, Nebraska.
01:06So this was at 547 central time, so just about, what, 16 minutes ago.
01:12Tornado confirmed on the ground by the fire chief and also reported as rain-wrapped.
01:18So this is not one of those, say, Wyoming tornadoes where often you can see the stand-alone funnel removed from the rain curtains and the hail.
01:27In this case, they're co-located.
01:29So this is a rain-wrapped tornado that continues to move to the east and northeast, moving more east than anything else here.
01:36And I'm going to loop this here so you can see the movement is maybe barely lifting a smidge north of due east, but it's primarily a west-to-east mover.
01:44And as we switch back over to the velocity scan here, you can see what we're up against with the outbound wind in red and the inbound wind in green.
01:52Strong inbound wind here.
01:54This warning, as it has been initially set, is set to run for 12 more minutes.
01:59But, again, if this rotation continues, we may get a new one off to the east.
02:04So the tornado is into Rock County, Nebraska right now.
02:07If it is indeed still on the ground, and it likely is, it's a confirmed tornado.
02:11Screaming inbound wind.
02:12There's the latest frame.
02:13So you can see very strong inbound and a hint of outbound wind.
02:17So the contrast here, the conflict in flow, 78-mile-per-hour inbound versus 15-mile-per-hour outbound.
02:23So still, it's about a 93-mile-per-hour gate-to-gate contrast.
02:27And the worst of this is south of Long Pine.
02:29The tornado was, again, reported 8 miles south of Long Pine, and now it's likely into Rock County.
02:35It has moved away from Brown and now into Rock County, Nebraska, as it is continuing to move east.
02:39Now, if you're in extreme eastern parts of Brown County, still take shelter there if you're up against the county line
02:45because we don't want you to get too comfortable with this dangerous tornado on the ground so close to you.
02:51There are also some severe thunderstorms that continue to move across areas now east of Scotts Bluff, Nebraska.
02:57These storms have been severe with some nasty wind and hail.
03:00We had a 4.5-inch diameter hailstorm reported in southeast Wyoming.
03:04Incredible stuff.
03:05And there it is, Yoder, Wyoming.
03:074.5-inch diameter hail.
03:09Some of the footage from Tony Laubach's camera lens there, as he's chasing in this area,
03:13shows what appears to be almost like snow out there.
03:16It's actually hail just as accumulated in such volumes.
03:19Also, a new flash flood warning just east of Cheyenne, including part of Interstate 80
03:23in an area maybe from 3 to about 12 miles west of the Nebraska line,
03:28just estimating based on the way things are looking on the radar there.
03:31And then farther east, you can see some slow-moving storms are still moving through parts of the New England states.
03:35But at this point, we're down to one severe thunderstorm warning,
03:38including parts of Rensselaer and Columbia counties here.
03:41It looks like it may now be out of Rensselaer County, just to the south, right up to the county line,
03:46and also western parts of Berkshire County in Massachusetts.
03:49So, again, slow-moving storms, damaging wind and hail embedded within those storms.
03:53And we're going to continue to watch out for the heat wave to hold through the day tomorrow in the northeast.
03:58And the northern fringe of this is where we have the ongoing thunderstorm threat tomorrow.
04:03Tomorrow, more of these storms will likely become severe in upstate New York near I-90,
04:08but to the south, record-tying highs likely in Pittsburgh and Morgantown there
04:13on the south side of that boundary between the cold and the warm.
